CLEAR Whole Person Care Model

CLEAR stands for Connect, Listen, Explore, Acknowledge and Respond. In order to encourage
compassionate encounters exemplified by the teaching and healing ministry of Jesus Christ, Loma Linda
University Health (LLUH) has developed the CLEAR Whole Person Care model to guide conversations that
engage the whole person. The CLEAR Whole Person Care model is based on the acronym CLEAR and has
five components, not all of which will be used in every interaction. Each component of the model can be
used in its simplest form or can be expanded and deepened in ways suggested by the italicized phrase
beneath it. I think more meaningful conversations and relationships are possible if this model will be
applied to the health professions.

One of the challenges in talking to a patient is how well will you approach a patient who is
conversationally hard to talk with. When I first heard of this, I thought it was another mainstreamed
approach to a person with a whole person care. However, when Dr. Javien had elaborated and expounded
on these principles, it was none like the other models that are existing already. This model is unique!
Unique, in a sense that when you approach a person or patient, you dont just ask what the patients
complaint but rather you also put an art in asking questions and showing compassion during a
conversation.

I was inspired by the words of Albert Schweitzer, which is in our handouts, stated that, It is our
duty to remember at all times and anew that medicine is not only a science, but also the art of letting our
own individuality interact with the individuality of the patient. In this statement, it clearly showed how
much influence a persons approach to a patient can make a difference in helping our patients heal. This
is one of the best models Ive ever encountered in my life and I think this approach will not just help us
elicit important things from the patient but also to show compassion through this kind of conversation.

In my reflection, this topic and this kind of model made me realize that its not all about clinical
skills that can make someone a good physician but also having good conversational skills. I like this model
because it doesnt only make an influence to others decisions but also make an inner influence to
ourselves. It made me see who I really am and made me change what I need to change that will help me
in my journey on becoming a 5-STAR Plus One Physician Missionary. And because of this model, I will
always remember how to be a good Samaritan-like person.
