Synonyms:
kya the Supreme Lord; vsudevya unto the son of Vasudeva; devak-nandanya
unto the son of Devak; ca and; nanda-gopa Nanda and the cowherd men;
kumrya unto their son; govindya unto the Personality of Godhead, who enlivens the
cows and the senses; nama respectful obeisances; nama obeisances.

Translation:
Let me therefore offer my respectful obeisances unto the Lord, who has become the
son of Vasudeva, the pleasure of Devak, the boy of Nanda and the other cowherd
men of Vndvana, and the enlivener of the cows and the senses.

Week 1 verse 2

nama pakaja-nbhya
nama pakaja-mline
nama pakaja-netrya
namas te pakajghraye

Synonyms:
nama all respectful obeisances; pakaja-nbhya unto the Lord who has a
specific depression resembling a lotus flower in the center of His abdomen; nama
obeisances; pakaja-mline one who is always decorated with a garland of
lotus flowers; nama obeisances; pakaja-netrya one whose glance is as
cooling as a lotus flower; nama te respectful obeisances unto You;
pakaja-aghraye unto You, the soles of whose feet are engraved with lotus
flowers (and who are therefore said to possess lotus feet).
Translation:
My respectful obeisances are unto You, O Lord, whose abdomen is marked with a
depression like a lotus flower, who are always decorated with garlands of lotus
flowers, whose glance is as cool as the lotus and whose feet are engraved with
lotuses.

Bhagvad Gita. 18.66

sarva-dharmn parityajya
mm eka araa vraja
aha tv sarva-ppebhyo
mokayiymi m uca

Synonyms:
sarva-dharmn all varieties of religion; parityajya abandoning; mm unto
Me; ekam only; araam for surrender; vraja go; aham I; tvm you;
sarva all; ppebhya from sinful reactions; mokayiymi will deliver; m
do not; uca worry.

Translation:
Abandon all varieties of religion and just surrender unto Me. I shall deliver you from
all sinful reactions. Do not fear.

Bhagvad Gita 4.7

yad yad hi dharmasya

Synonyms:
yad yad whenever and wherever; hi certainly; dharmasya of religion;
glni discrepancies; bhavati become manifested; bhrata O descendant of
Bharata; abhyutthnam predominance; adharmasya of irreligion; tad at
that time; tmnam self; sjmi manifest; aham I.

Translation:
Whenever and wherever there is a decline in religious practice, O descendant of
Bharata, and a predominant rise of irreligion at that time I descend Myself.

Week 2 Verse 2
Bhagvad Gita - 4.8

paritrya sdhn
vinya ca duktm
dharma-sasthpanrthya
sambhavmi yuge yuge

Synonyms:
paritrya for the deliverance; sdhnm of the devotees; vinya for the
annihilation; ca and; duktm of the miscreants; dharma principles of
religion; sasthpana-arthya to reestablish; sambhavmi I do appear; yuge
millennium; yuge after millennium.

Translation:
To deliver the pious and to annihilate the miscreants, as well as to reestablish the
principles of religion, I Myself appear, millennium after millennium.
Week 2 Verse 3
Srimad Bhagvatam - 11.5.32

ka-vara tvika
sgopgstra-pradam
yajai sakrtana-pryair
yajanti hi su-medhasa

Synonyms:
ka-varam repeating the syllables k-a; tvi with a luster; akam not
black (golden); sa-aga along with associates; upa-aga servitors; astra
weapons; pradam confidential companions; yajai by sacrifice;
sakrtana-pryai consisting chiefly of congregational chanting; yajanti they
worship; hi certainly; su-medhasa intelligent persons.

Translation:
In the Age of Kali, intelligent persons perform congregational chanting to worship the
incarnation of Godhead who constantly sings the names of Ka. Although His
complexion is not blackish, He is Ka Himself. He is accompanied by His
associates, servants, weapons and confidential companions.

Week 2 Verse 4
Caitanya Caritamrita di Lila 17.22

kali-kle nma-rpe ka-avatra


nma haite haya sarva-jagat-nistra

Synonyms:
kali-kle in this Age of Kali; nma-rpe in the form of the holy name; ka
Lord Ka; avatra incarnation; nma holy name; haite from; haya
becomes; sarva all; jagat of the world; nistra deliverance.

Translation:
In this Age of Kali, the holy name of the Lord, the Hare Ka mah-mantra, is the
incarnation of Lord Ka. Simply by chanting the holy name, one associates with the
Lord directly. Anyone who does this is certainly delivered.
Week 3 - Offering to Lord Krishna
Week 3 Verse 1
Bhagvad Gita - 9.34

man-man bhava mad-bhakto


mad-yj m namaskuru
mm evaiyasi yuktvaivam
tmna mat-paryaa

Synonyms:
mat-man always thinking of Me; bhava become; mat My; bhakta
devotee; mat My; yj worshiper; mm unto Me; namas-kuru offer
obeisances; mm unto Me; eva completely; eyasi you will come; yuktv
being absorbed; evam thus; tmnam your soul; mat-paryaa devoted to
Me.

Translation:
Engage your mind always in thinking of Me, become My devotee, offer obeisances to
Me and worship Me. Being completely absorbed in Me, surely you will come to Me.

Bhagvad Gita - 9.27

yat karoi yad ansi


yaj juhoi dadsi yat
yat tapasyasi kaunteya
tat kuruva mad-arpaam

Synonyms:
yat whatever; karoi you do; yat whatever; ansi you eat; yat
whatever; juhoi you offer; dadsi you give away; yat whatever; yat
whatever; tapasyasi austerities you perform; kaunteya O son of Kunt; tat
that; kuruva do; mat unto Me; arpaam as an offering.

Translation:
Whatever you do, whatever you eat, whatever you offer or give away, and whatever
austerities you perform do that, O son of Kunt, as an offering to Me.
Week 3 Verse 3
Bhagvad Gita - 9.26

patra pupa phala toya


yo me bhakty prayacchati
tad aha bhakty-upahtam
anmi prayattmana

Synonyms:
patram a leaf; pupam a ower; phalam a fruit; toyam water; ya
whoever; me unto Me; bhakty with devotion; prayacchati offers; tat that;
aham I; bhakti-upahtam offered in devotion; anmi accept;
prayata-tmana from one in pure consciousness.

Translation:
If one offers Me with love and devotion a leaf, a ower, a fruit or water, I will accept
it.

Week 4 Verse 1
Srimad Bhagvatam - 3.25.21

titikava kruik
suhda sarva-dehinm
ajta-atrava nt
sdhava sdhu-bha

Synonyms:
titikava tolerant; kruik merciful; suhda friendly; sarva-dehinm to
all living entities; ajta-atrava inimical to none; nt peaceful; sdhava
abiding by scriptures; sdhu-bha adorned with sublime characteristics.

Translation:
The symptoms of a sdhu are that he is tolerant, merciful and friendly to all living
entities. He has no enemies, he is peaceful, he abides by the scriptures, and all his
characteristics are sublime.

Week 4 Verse 2
Bhagvad Gita - 2.14

mtr-spars tu kaunteya
toa-sukha-dukha-d
gampyino nitys
ts titikasva bhrata
Synonyms:
mtr-spar sensory perception; tu only; kaunteya O son of Kunt; ta
winter; ua summer; sukha happiness; dukha and pain; d giving;
gama appearing; apyina disappearing; anity nonpermanent; tn all
of them; titikasva just try to tolerate; bhrata O descendant of the Bharata
dynasty.

Translation:
O son of Kunt, the nonpermanent appearance of happiness and distress, and their
disappearance in due course, are like the appearance and disappearance of winter
and summer seasons. They arise from sense perception, O scion of Bharata, and
one must learn to tolerate them without being disturbed.

amanina manadena
kirtaniyah sada harihi

One should chant the holy name of the Lord in a humble state of mind, thinking
oneself lower than the straw in the street; one should be more tolerant than a tree,
devoid of all sense of false prestige, and should be ready to offer all respect to
others. In such a state of mind one can chant the holy name of the Lord constantly.
Week 5 - Sravanam - Hearing

Week 5 Verse 1

r-prahrda uvca
ravaa krtana vio
smaraa pda-sevanam
arcana vandana dsya
sakhyam tma-nivedanam
Synonyms:
r-prahrda uvca Prahlda Mahrja said; ravaam hearing; krtanam
chanting; vio of Lord Viu (not anyone else); smaraam remembering;
pda-sevanam serving the feet; arcanam offering worship (with oaopacra,
the sixteen kinds of paraphernalia); vandanam offering prayers; dsyam
becoming the servant; sakhyam becoming the best friend; tma-nivedanam
surrendering everything, whatever one has;

Translation (Verse 23 & 24):


Prahlda Mahrja said: Hearing and chanting about the transcendental holy name,
form, qualities, paraphernalia and pastimes of Lord Viu, remembering them,
serving the lotus feet of the Lord, offering the Lord respectful worship with sixteen
types of paraphernalia, offering prayers to the Lord, becoming His servant,
considering the Lord ones best friend, and surrendering everything unto Him (in
other words, serving Him with the body, mind and words) these nine processes
are accepted as pure devotional service. One who has dedicated his life to the
service of Ka through these nine methods should be understood to be the most
learned person, for he has acquired complete knowledge.
Week 5 Verse 2
Bhagvad Gita - 7.1

r-bhagavn uvca
mayy sakta-man prtha
yoga yujan mad-raya
asaaya samagra m
yath jsyasi tac chu

Synonyms:
r-bhagavn uvca the Supreme Lord said; mayi to Me; sakta-man
mind attached; prtha O son of Pth; yogam self-realization; yujan
practicing; mat-raya in consciousness of Me (Ka consciousness);
asaayam without doubt; samagram completely; mm Me; yath how;
jsyasi you can know; tat that; u try to hear.

Translation:
The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: Now hear, O son of Pth, how by
practicing yoga in full consciousness of Me, with mind attached to Me, you can know
Me in full, free from doubt.

Week 5 Verse 3
CC Madhya 19.155

th vistrita ha phale prema-phala


ih ml sece nitya ravadi jala

Synonyms:
th there in the spiritual world (in the Goloka Vndvana planet); vistrita
expanded; ha becoming; phale produces; prema-phala the fruit known as
love of Godhead; ih in the material world, where the devotee is still present;
ml exactly like a gardener; sece sprinkles; nitya regularly, without fail;
ravaa-di jala the water of ravaa, krtana and so on.

Translation:
The creeper greatly expands in the Goloka Vndvana planet, and there it produces
the fruit of love for Ka. Although remaining in the material world, the gardener
regularly sprinkles the creeper with the water of hearing and chanting.
Week 5 Bonus verse
Srimad Bhagvatam 10.14.8

tat te nukamp su-samkamo


bhujna evtma-kta vipkam
hd-vg-vapurbhir vidadhan namas te
jveta yo mukti-pade sa dya-bhk

Synonyms:
tat therefore; te Your; anukampm compassion; su-samkama
earnestly hoping for; bhujna enduring; eva certainly; tma-ktam done by
himself; vipkam the fruitive results; ht with his heart; vk words; vapurbhi
and body; vidadhan offering; nama obeisances; te unto You; jveta
lives; ya anyone who; mukti-pade to the position of liberation; sa he;
dya-bhk the rightful heir.

Translation:
My dear Lord, one who earnestly waits for You to bestow Your causeless mercy
upon him, all the while patiently suffering the reactions of his past misdeeds and
offering You respectful obeisances with his heart, words and body, is surely eligible
for liberation, for it has become his rightful claim.
Week 6 Significance of Sravanam - Hearing

Week 6 Verse 1
Srimad Bhagvatam 1.2.17

vat sva-kath ka
puya-ravaa-krtana
hdy anta stho hy abhadri
vidhunoti suht satm
Synonyms:
vatm those who have developed the urge to hear the message of; sva-kath
His own words; ka the Personality of Godhead; puya virtues; ravaa
hearing; krtana chanting; hdi anta stha within ones heart; hi
certainly; abhadri desire to enjoy matter; vidhunoti cleanses; suht
benefactor; satm of the truthful.
Translation:
r Ka, the Personality of Godhead, who is the Paramtm [Supersoul] in
everyones heart and the benefactor of the truthful devotee, cleanses desire for
material enjoyment from the heart of the devotee who has developed the urge to
hear His messages, which are in themselves virtuous when properly heard and
chanted.

Week 6 Verse 2
Srimad Bhagvatam 1.2.18

naa-pryev abhadreu
nitya bhgavata-sevay
bhagavaty uttama-loke
bhaktir bhavati naihik
Synonyms:
naa destroyed; pryeu almost to nil; abhadreu all that is inauspicious;
nityam regularly; bhgavata rmad-Bhgavatam, or the pure devotee; sevay
by serving; bhagavati unto the Personality of Godhead; uttama
transcendental; loke prayers; bhakti loving service; bhavati comes into
being; naihik irrevocable.

Translation:
By regular attendance in classes on the Bhgavatam and by rendering of service to
the pure devotee, all that is troublesome to the heart is almost completely destroyed,
and loving service unto the Personality of Godhead, who is praised with
transcendental songs, is established as an irrevocable fact.
Week 6 Verse 3
CC Madhya 22.107

nitya-siddha ka-prema sdhya kabhu naya


ravadi-uddha-citte karaye udaya

Synonyms:
nitya-siddha eternally established; ka-prema love of Ka; sdhya to be
gained; kabhu at any time; naya not; ravaa-di by hearing, etc; uddha
purified; citte in the heart; karaye udaya awakens.

Translation:
Pure love for Ka is eternally established in the hearts of the living entities. It is not
something to be gained from another source. When the heart is purified by hearing
and chanting, this love naturally awakens.

Week 6 Bonus Verse


Bhagvad Gita 13.26

anye tv evam ajnanta


rutvnyebhya upsate
te pi ctitaranty eva
mtyu ruti-parya

Synonyms:
anye others; tu but; evam thus; ajnanta without spiritual knowledge;
rutv by hearing; anyebhya from others; upsate begin to worship; te
they; api also; ca and; atitaranti transcend; eva certainly; mtyum the
path of death; ruti-parya inclined to the process of hearing.
Translation:
Again there are those who, although not conversant in spiritual knowledge, begin to
worship the Supreme Person upon hearing about Him from others. Because of their
tendency to hear from authorities, they also transcend the path of birth and death.
Week 7 - What is Pure Bhakti (Devotional service)?
Week 7 Verse 1
Srimad Bhagvatam 1.2.6

sa vai pus paro dharmo


yato bhaktir adhokaje
ahaituky apratihat
yaytm suprasdati

Synonyms:
sa that; vai certainly; pusm for mankind; para sublime; dharma
occupation; yata by which; bhakti devotional service; adhokaje unto the
Transcendence; ahaituk causeless; apratihat unbroken; yay by which;
tm the self; suprasdati completely satisfied.

Translation:
The supreme occupation [dharma] for all humanity is that by which men can attain to
loving devotional service unto the transcendent Lord. Such devotional service must
be unmotivated and uninterrupted to completely satisfy the self.

Week 7 Verse 2
Sri Siksastakam - Verse 4

na dhanam na janam na sundarm


kavitm v jagad-a kmaye
mama janmani janmanvare
bhavatd bhaktir ahaituk tvayi

TRANSLATION
O almighty Lord, I have no desire to accumulate wealth, nor do I desire beautiful
women nor do I want any number of followers. I only want Your causeless devotional
service, birth after birth
Week 7 Verse 3
Srimad Bhagvatam - 2.3.10

akma sarva-kmo v
moka-kma udra-dh
tvrea bhakti-yogena
yajeta purua param

Synonyms:
akma one who has transcended all material desires; sarva-kma one who
has the sum total of material desires; v either; moka-kma one who desires
liberation; udra-dh with broader intelligence; tvrea with great force;
bhakti-yogena by devotional service to the Lord; yajeta should worship;
puruam the Lord; param the supreme whole.

Translation:
A person who has broader intelligence, whether he be full of all material desire,
without any material desire, or desiring liberation, must by all means worship the
supreme whole, the Personality of Godhead.

Week 9 - Verse 1
Bhagvad Gita - 16.21

tri-vidha narakasyeda
dvra nanam tmana
kma krodhas tath lobhas
tasmd etat traya tyajet

Synonyms:
tri-vidham of three kinds; narakasya of hell; idam this; dvram gate;
nanam destructive; tmana of the self; kma lust; krodha anger;
tath as well as; lobha greed; tasmt therefore; etat these; trayam
three; tyajet one must give up.

Translation:
There are three gates leading to this hell lust, anger and greed. Every sane man
should give these up, for they lead to the degradation of the soul.

Bhagvad Gita - 2.62

dhyyato viayn pusa


sagas tepajyate
sagt sajyate kma
kmt krodho bhijyate

Synonyms:
dhyyata while contemplating; viayn sense objects; pusa of a person;
saga attachment; teu in the sense objects; upajyate develops; sagt
from attachment; sajyate develops; kma desire; kmt from desire;
krodha anger; abhijyate becomes manifest.

Translation:
While contemplating the objects of the senses, a person develops attachment for
them, and from such attachment lust develops, and from lust anger arises.
Week 9 - Verse 3
Bhagvad Gita - 2.63

krodhd bhavati sammoha


sammoht smti-vibhrama
smti-bhrad buddhi-no
buddhi-nt praayati

Synonyms:
krodht from anger; bhavati takes place; sammoha perfect illusion;
sammoht from illusion; smti of memory; vibhrama bewilderment;
smti-bhrat after bewilderment of memory; buddhi-na loss of
intelligence; buddhi-nt and from loss of intelligence; praayati one falls
down.

Translation:
From anger, complete delusion arises, and from delusion bewilderment of memory.
When memory is bewildered, intelligence is lost, and when intelligence is lost one
falls down again into the material pool.

Week 9 - Verse 4
Nectar of Instruction

Synonyms:
vca of speech; vegam urge; manasa of the mind; krodha of anger;
vegam urge; jihv of the tongue; vegam urge; udara-upastha of the belly
and genitals; vegam urge; etn these; vegn urges; ya whoever;
viaheta can tolerate; dhra sober; sarvm all; api certainly; imm
this; pthivm world; sa that personality; iyt can make disciples.

Translation:
A sober person who can tolerate the urge to speak, the minds demands, the actions
of anger and the urges of the tongue, belly and genitals is qualied to make disciples
all over the world.
Week 10 - Eternal Nature of Soul
Verse 1 Bhagvad Gita 2.13

dehino smin yath dehe


kaumra yauvana jar
tath dehntara-prptir
dhras tatra na muhyati

Synonyms:
dehina of the embodied; asmin in this; yath as; dehe in the body;
kaumram boyhood; yauvanam youth; jar old age; tath similarly;
deha-antara of transference of the body; prpti achievement; dhra the
sober; tatra thereupon; na never; muhyati is deluded.

Translation:
As the embodied soul continuously passes, in this body, from boyhood to youth to
old age, the soul similarly passes into another body at death. A sober person is not
bewildered by such a change.

Verse 2 Bhagvad Gita 2.20

na jyate mriyate v kadcin


nya bhtv bhavit v na bhya
ajo nitya vato ya puro
na hanyate hanyamne arre

Synonyms:
na never; jyate takes birth; mriyate dies; v either; kadcit at any
time (past, present or future); na never; ayam this; bhtv having come into
being; bhavit will come to be; v or; na not; bhya or is again coming
to be; aja unborn; nitya eternal; vata permanent; ayam this;
pura the oldest; na never; hanyate is killed; hanyamne being killed;
arre the body.

Translation:
For the soul there is neither birth nor death at any time. He has not come into being,
does not come into being, and will not come into being. He is unborn, eternal,
ever-existing and primeval. He is not slain when the body is slain.
Verse 3 Bhagvad Gita 2.23

naina chindanti astri


naina dahati pvaka
na caina kledayanty po
na oayati mruta

Synonyms:
na never; enam this soul; chindanti can cut to pieces; astri weapons;
na never; enam this soul; dahati burns; pvaka re; na never; ca
also; enam this soul; kledayanti moistens; pa water; na never; oayati
dries; mruta wind.

Translation:
The soul can never be cut to pieces by any weapon, nor burned by re, nor
moistened by water, nor withered by the wind.

Bonus Verse 4
Bhagvad Gita 2.27

jtasya hi dhruvo mtyur


dhruva janma mtasya ca
tasmd aparihrye rthe
na tva ocitum arhasi

Synonyms:
jtasya of one who has taken his birth; hi certainly; dhruva a fact; mtyu
death; dhruvam it is also a fact; janma birth; mtasya of the dead; ca also;
tasmt therefore; aparihrye of that which is unavoidable; arthe in the
matter; na do not; tvam you; ocitum to lament; arhasi deserve.

Translation:
One who has taken his birth is sure to die, and after death one is sure to take birth
again. Therefore, in the unavoidable discharge of your duty, you should not lament.

Synonyms:
aham I; sarvasya of all; prabhava the source of generation; matta from
Me; sarvam everything; pravartate emanates; iti thus; matv knowing;
bhajante become devoted; mm unto Me; budh the learned;
bhva-samanvit with great attention.

Translation:
I am the source of all spiritual and material worlds. Everything emanates from Me.
The wise who perfectly know this engage in My devotional service and worship Me
with all their hearts.

Translation:
I am seated in everyones heart, and from Me come remembrance, knowledge and
forgetfulness. By all the Vedas, I am to be known. Indeed, I am the compiler of
Vednta, and I am the knower of the Vedas.

Bhagvad Gita - 5.29

bhoktra yaja-tapas
sarva-loka-mahevaram
suhda sarva-bhtn

Synonyms:
bhoktram the beneciary; yaja of sacrices; tapasm and penances and
austerities; sarva-loka of all planets and the demigods thereof; mah-varam
the Supreme Lord; su-hdam the benefactor; sarva of all; bhtnm the
living entities; jtv thus knowing; mm Me (Lord Ka); ntim relief from
material pangs; cchati one achieves.

Translation:
A person in full consciousness of Me, knowing Me to be the ultimate beneciary of all
sacrices and austerities, the Supreme Lord of all planets and demigods, and the
benefactor and well-wisher of all living entities, attains peace from the pangs of
material miseries.
Week 11 Verse 4
Brahma Samhita - 5.1
vara parama ka
sac-cid-nanda-vigraha
andir dir govinda
sarva-kraa-kraam

Translation - Krsna who is known as Govinda is the Supreme Godhead. He has an


eternal blissful spiritual body. He is the origin of all. He has no other origin and He is
the prime cause of all causes.

Srimad Bhagvatam - 1.3.28

Translation:
All of the above-mentioned incarnations are either plenary portions or portions of the
plenary portions of the Lord, but Lord r Ka is the original Personality of
Godhead. All of them appear on planets whenever there is a disturbance created by
the atheists. The Lord incarnates to protect the theists.

Translation:
Lord Ka alone is the supreme controller, and all others are His servants. They

Translation:
O most munificent incarnation! You are Ka Himself appearing as r Ka
Caitanya Mahprabhu. You have assumed the golden color of rmat Rdhr,
and You are widely distributing pure love of Ka. We offer our respectful
obeisances unto You.

vara-svabhva bhaktera n laya apardha


alpa-sev bahu mne tma-paryanta prasda
Synonyms:
vara-svabhva the characteristic of the Supreme Personality of Godhead;
bhaktera of the pure devotee; nlaya does not take; apardha any offense;
alpa-sev very small service; bahu mne the Lord accepts as very great;
tma-paryanta giving Himself; prasda mercy.

Translation:
Characteristically, the Supreme Personality of Godhead does not take seriously an
offense committed by a pure devotee. The Lord accepts whatever small service a
devotee renders as being such a great service that He is prepared to give even
Himself, what to speak of other benedictions.

Bhagvad Gita 2.40

nehbhikrama-no sti
pratyavyo na vidyate
sv-alpam apy asya dharmasya
tryate mahato bhayt

Synonyms:
na there is not; iha in this yoga; abhikrama in endeavoring; na loss;

Translation:
In this endeavor there is no loss or diminution, and a little advancement on this path
can protect one from the most dangerous type of fear.

Synonyms:
api even; cet if; su-durcra one committing the most abominable actions;

be considered; samyak completely; vyavasita situated in determination; hi

Translation:
Even if one commits the most abominable action, if he is engaged in devotional
service he is to be considered saintly because he is properly situated in his
determination.

very happy; kartum to execute; avyayam everlasting.

Translation:
This knowledge is the king of education, the most secret of all secrets. It is the purest
knowledge, and because it gives direct perception of the self by realization, it is the
perfection of religion. It is everlasting, and it is joyfully performed.

Text 2 - Bhagvad Gita - 18.54


brahma-bhta prasanntm
na ocati na kkati
sama sarveu bhteu
mad-bhakti labhate parm

Synonyms:

Translation:
One who is thus transcendentally situated at once realizes the Supreme Brahman and
becomes fully joyful. He never laments or desires to have anything. He is equally disposed
toward every living entity. In that state he attains pure devotional service unto Me.
Text 3 - Srimad Bhagavtam 1.2.20
eva prasanna-manaso
bhagavad-bhakti-yogata
bhagavat-tattva-vijna
mukta-sagasya jyate

Synonyms:
evam thus; prasanna enlivened; m anasa of the mind; bhagavat-bhakti the
devotional service of the Lord; yogata by contact of; bhagavat regarding the
Personality of Godhead; tattva knowledge; vijnam scientific; mukta liberated;
sagasya of the association; jyate becomes effective.

Translation:
Thus established in the mode of unalloyed goodness, the man whose mind has been
enlivened by contact with devotional service to the Lord gains positive scientific knowledge
of the Personality of Godhead in the stage of liberation from all material association.

Week 15 - The Final Examination
Text 1 - Bhagvad Gita - 8.6
ya ya vpi smaran bhva
tyajaty ante kalevaram
ta tam evaiti kaunteya
sad tad-bhva-bhvita
Synonyms:
yam yam whatever; v api at all; smaran remembering; bhvam nature; t yajati
gives up; ante at the end; kalevaram this body; tam tam similar; eva certainly; eti
gets; kaunteya O son of Kunt; sad always; tat that; bhva state of being;
bhvita remembering.
Translation:
Whatever state of being one remembers when he quits his body, O son of Kunt, that state
he will attain without fail.
Purport (partial) - Of course, ones thoughts during the course of ones life accumulate to
inuence ones thoughts at the moment of death, so this life creates ones next life. If in
ones present life one lives in the mode of goodness and always thinks of Ka, it is possible
for one to remember Ka at the end of ones life.

Text 2 - Bhagvad Gita - 8.5


anta-kle ca mm eva
smaran muktv kalevaram
ya prayti sa mad-bhva
yti nsty atra saaya
Synonyms:
anta-kle at the end of life; ca also; mm Me; eva certainly; smaran
remembering; muktv quitting; kalevaram the body; ya he who; prayti goes;

Translation:
And whoever, at the end of his life, quits his body remembering Me alone at once attains My
nature. Of this there is no doubt.

"If My devotee is unable to remember Me at the time of death because of disturbances felt within
the body at that time, then I shall remember My devotee and take him back to My supreme

intoxicants); jna by the knowledge of the philosophy of the monist Myvds*; karma
by fruitive activities; di by artificially practicing detachment, by the mechanical practice
of yoga, by studying the Skhya philosophy, and so on; anvtam not covered;
nuklyena favorable; k a-anulanam cultivation of service in relationship to Ka;
bhakti uttam first-class devotional service.
Translation:

When first-class devotional service develops, one must be devoid of


all material desires, knowledge obtained by monistic philosophy, and
fruitive action. The devotee must constantly serve Ka favorably, as
Ka desires.

Purport:
This verse is also found in rla Rpa Gosvms Bhakti-rasmta-sindhu (1.1.11).

vyavasytmik buddhir

vyavasya-tmik resolute in Ka consciousness; buddhi intelligence; ek only
one; iha in this world; kuru-nandana O beloved child of the Kurus; bahu- kh
having various branches; hi indeed; anant unlimited; ca also; buddhaya
intelligence; avyavasyinm of those who are not in Ka consciousness.
Translation:
Those who are on this path are resolute in purpose, and their aim is
one. O beloved child of the Kurus, the intelligence of those who are
irresolute is many-branched.

raddh-abde vivsa kahe sudha nicaya


ke bhakti kaile sarva-karma kta haya
Synonyms:
raddh-abde by the word raddh; vivsa faith; kahe is said; sudha firm;
nicaya certain; ke unto Lord Ka; bhakti devotional service; kaile by
executing; sarva-karma all activities; kta completed; haya are.
Translation:
raddh is confident, firm faith that by rendering transcendental
loving service to Ka one automatically performs all subsidiary
activities. Such faith is favorable to the discharge of devotional
service.

Bhagvad Gita - 4.34

tad viddhi praiptena


paripranena sevay
upadekyanti te jna
jninas tattva-darina

Synonyms:
tat that knowledge of different sacrices; viddhi try to
understand; p raiptena by approaching a spiritual master;
paripranena by submissive inquiries; sevay by the rendering of
service; upadekyanti they will initiate; te you; jnam into
knowledge; jnina the self-realized; tattva of the truth;
darina seers.
Translation:

Just try to learn the truth by approaching a spiritual master. Inquire


from him submissively and render service unto him. The self-realized
souls can impart knowledge unto you because they have seen the
truth.
Association

sdhu-saga, sdhu-saga sarva-stre kaya

lava-mtra sdhu-sage sarva-siddhi haya

Synonyms:

sdhu-saga sdhu-saga association with pure devotees;


sarva-stre all the revealed scriptures; kaya say; lava-mtra
even for a moment; sdhu-s age by association with a devotee;
sarva-siddhi all success; haya there is.

Translation:

The verdict of all revealed scriptures is that by even a moments


association with a pure devotee, one can attain all success.

CC Madhya 22.83
ka-bhakti-janma-mla haya sdhu-saga

ka-prema janme, teho puna mukhya aga

Synonyms:

ka-bhakti of devotional service to Ka; janma-mla the root


cause; haya is; sdhu-saga association with advanced devotees;
ka-prema love of Ka; janme awakens; t eho that same
association with devotees; puna again; mukhya aga the chief
principle.

Translation:

The root cause of devotional service to Lord Ka is association with


advanced devotees. Even when ones dormant love for Ka awakens,
association with devotees is still most essential.
SB 11.2.29
durlabho mnuo deho

dehin kaa-bhagura

tatrpi durlabha manye

vaikuha-priya-daranam

Synonyms:

durlabha difficult to achieve; mnua human; deha body;


dehinm for embodied beings; kaa-bhagura prone to be
destroyed at any moment; tatra in that human body; api even;
durlabham more difficult to achieve; manye I consider;
vaikuhapriya of those who are dear to the Supreme Lord,
Vaikuha; daranam the vision.

Translation:

For the conditioned souls, the human body is most difficult to achieve,
and it can be lost at any moment. But I think that even those who have
achieved human life rarely gain the association of pure devotees, who
are dear to the Lord of Vaikuha.
SB 3.25.25
sat prasagn mama vrya-savido

bhavanti ht-kara-rasyan kath

taj-joad v apavarga-vartmani

raddh ratir bhaktir anukramiyati

Synonyms:

satm of pure devotees; prasagt through the association;


mama My; vrya wonderful activities; s avida by discussion
of; bhavanti become; ht to the heart; kara to the ear;
rasa-a yan pleasing; kath the stories; tat of that; joat

Translation:

In the association of pure devotees, discussion of the pastimes and


activities of the Supreme Personality of Godhead is very pleasing and
satisfying to the ear and the heart. By cultivating such knowledge one
gradually becomes advanced on the path of liberation, and thereafter
he is freed, and his attraction becomes fixed. Then real devotion and
devotional service begin.
SB 2.8.4
vata raddhay nitya

gata ca sva-ceitam

klena ntidrghea

bhagavn viate hdi

Synonyms:

vata of those who hear; raddhay in earnestness; nityam


regularly, always; g ata taking the matter; ca also;
sva-ceitam seriously by ones own endeavor; klena duration;
na not; ati-drghea very prolonged time; bhagavn the
Personality of Godhead r Ka; viate becomes manifest; hdi
within ones heart.

Translation:

Persons who hear rmad-Bhgavatam regularly and are always


taking the matter very seriously will have the Personality of Godhead
r Ka manifested in their hearts within a short time.

sva-mtu svinna-gtry

visrasta-kabara-sraja

dv parirama ka

kpayst sva-bandhane

Synonyms:

sva-mtu of His own mother (Kas mother, Yaoddev);


svinna-gtry when Ka saw His mother perspiring all over
because of unnecessary labor; visrasta were falling down; kabara
from her hair; s raja of whom the flowers; dv by seeing the
condition of His mother; pariramam He could understand that she
was now overworked and feeling fatigued; ka the Supreme
Personality of Godhead; k pay by His causeless mercy upon His
devotee and mother; st agreed; sva-bandhane in binding Him.

Translation:

Because of mother Yaods hard labor, her whole body became


covered with perspiration, and the flowers and comb were falling
from her hair. When child Ka saw His mother thus fatigued, He
became merciful to her and agreed to be bound.
Bg 6.26
yato yato nicalati

mana cacalam asthiram

tatas tato niyamyaitad

tmany eva vaa nayet

Synonyms:

yata yata wherever; nicalati becomes verily agitated; mana


the mind; cacalam ickering; asthiram unsteady; t ata tata
from there; niyamya regulating; etat this; tmani in the
Self; eva certainly; vaam control; nayet must bring under.

Translation:

From wherever the mind wanders due to its ickering and unsteady
nature, one must certainly withdraw it and bring it back under the
control of the Self.

mac-citta sarva-durgi

mat-prasdt tariyasi

atha cet tvam ahakrn

na royasi vinakyasi
Synonyms:

mat of Me; citta being in consciousness; sarva all; durgi


impediments; mat-prasdt by My mercy; tariyasi you will
overcome; atha but; cet if; tvam you; ahakrt by false
ego; na royasi do not hear; vinakyasi you will be lost.

Translation:

If you become conscious of Me, you will pass over all the obstacles of
conditioned life by My grace. If, however, you do not work in such
consciousness but act through false ego, not hearing Me, you will be
lost.

Unto those great souls who have implicit faith in both the
Lord and the spiritual master, all the imports of Vedic

No one can understand K a as He is by the blunt material

nigama the Vedic literatures; kalpa-taro the desire tree; galitam fully matured;
phalam fruit; uka rla ukadeva Gosvm, the original speaker of
rmad-Bhgavatam; mukht from the lips of; amta nectar; drava semisolid and
soft and therefore easily swallowable; sayutam perfect in all respects; pibata do
relish it; bhgavatam the book dealing in the science of the eternal relation with the Lord;
rasam juice (that which is relishable); layam until liberation, or even in a liberated
condition; m uhu always; aho O; rasik those who are full in the knowledge of
mellows; bhuvi on the earth; bhvuk expert and thoughtful.

Translation:
O expert and thoughtful men, relish rmad-Bhgavatam, the mature fruit of the desire tree
of Vedic literatures. It emanated from the lips of r ukadeva Gosvm. Therefore this fruit
has become even more tasteful, although its nectarean juice was already relishable for all,
including liberated souls.

Text 2 - Gita Mahatmaya


sarvopaniado gvo
dogdh gopla-nandana
prtho vatsa su-dhr bhokt
dugdha gtmta mahat

This Gtopaniad, Bhagavad-gt, the essence of all the Upaniads, is just like a cow, and
Lord Ka, who is famous as a cowherd boy, is milking this cow. Arjuna is just like a calf,
and learned scholars and pure devotees are to drink the nectarean milk of Bhagavad-gt.
