AIRCRAFT TYPE: A318, A319, A320, A321, A300-600, A310, A330, A340, A340-500/600.
The aim of this SIL is to avoid possible AOG situations resulting from the non-availability of
appropriate oxygen containers and/or generators when operation under MMEL condition is not
acceptable.
This SIL provides interchangeability information for the passenger chemical oxygen systems
supplied by vendors B/E Aerospace (former Puritan Bennett) and Drger Aerospace.
Changes in subject SIL are highlighted by a vertical revision bar in the left hand margin
of the respective page.
2. BACKGROUND:
The first issue of this SIL provided the technical interchangeability of B/E Aerospace (Puritan
Bennett) passenger oxygen generators PN 117019-0X (13 minutes), PN 117028-0X (15 minutes)
and PN 117042-0X (15 minutes) within B/E Aerospace containers.
These generators are fitted on A318, A319, A320, A321, A300-600, A310, A330, A340 and A340-
500/600 aircraft.
Revision 2 of this SIL provided (at revision 02 the SIL was entirely reworked):
Additional details about chemical oxygen containers.
An explanation of the part number logic for both vendors.
Interchangeability of new part numbers issued since revision 1 (including the
interchangeability of new part numbers present on A340-500/600 aircraft as well as
A330/A340 with Enhanced Cabin).
Interchangeability of Drger Aerospace chemical oxygen containers.
Note: A mention SEE SIL 35-007 is found at the level of the oxygen containers in each applicable IPC
35-21.
If necessary, the approval for replacement of the oxygen generator (described in paragraph 3.1 and
3.2) as well as container interchangeability (described in paragraph 3.5, 3.6, 3.7 and 3.8) is to be
negotiated independently by the operators with their local Airworthiness Authorities. This should be
done in advance, in order to avoid any additional delay in case of AOG.
The generator replacements presented in this SIL must be limited to AOG cases, since the part
number of the complete oxygen container would have to be changed for permanent
installation/modification. Therefore it is required that the aircraft recover its initial configuration as
soon as the parts are available and not later than within 500 FH.
3. DESCRIPTION:
Two vendors - B/E Aerospace (former Puritan Bennett) and Drger Aerospace - supply Airbus
aircraft with passenger oxygen systems.
The cabin emergency chemical oxygen system consists of self-contained oxygen container
assemblies.
Each container assembly is composed of:
- Solid-state chemical oxygen generator(s).
- Continuous flow type oxygen masks with face piece, reservoir bag, flexible tubing and lanyard
connected to the generator (pulling the mask lanyard will pull the release pin and will activate
the oxygen generator).
- An electrical door latching mechanism that opens the container door when supplied with electrical
power. The door can be opened manually thanks to the cabin release tool in case of malfunction.
- A door stop for maintenance/test purpose that allows testing of the door latch mechanism without
deploying the masks.
* Some Type I, II, V and VI containers are equipped with a PULL Flag attached to the masks. Purpose of the
PULL Flag is to extend the reach envelope of the masks in order to enable users to get access to the emergency
oxygen masks whatever their - standing or seating - position.
The company that was formerly called Puritan-Bennett Aero Systems Co. is now a part of B/E
Aerospace.
In all cases a PN marked B/E Aerospace and the same PN marked "Puritan-Bennett Aero Systems
Co." are fully interchangeable.

DRAGER AEROSPACE:
Drger Aerospace have been supplying Airbus aircraft with passenger oxygen systems since the early
1990s.
Figure 2
Note: Only some oxygen generators from vendor B/E Aerospace can be interchanged in AOG situation as
per detail found below.
PN 117019-02, -03, -04 (13 minutes generators) can be replaced by PN 117028-02, -03, -04 or
117042-02, 03, 04 (15 minutes generators).
This replacement can be done without any operational consequences, and does not require any
mechanical adaptation.
(The quantity of heat produced by the 13 and 15 minutes generators is similar).
15 minutes generators PN 117028-02, -03, -04 and 117042-02, -03, -04 can be replaced by
respectively 13 minutes generators PN 117019-02, -03, -04.
Technically, this replacement requires a minor installation adaptation: This is described in paragraph
3.2.
CAUTION: The installation of 13 minutes generators in place of 15 minutes, implies that the aircraft
is operated in accordance with the possibilities of the equipment installed (i.e. 13 minutes
performance.
This is valid in any case if at least one generator or container 13 minutes is installed at any location
within the aircraft.
MANDATORY: The 15 minutes descent profile indicated in the FCOM must be replaced by a 13
minutes descent profile as shown in examples of figures 3, 4 and 5 (see pages 7 and 8).
For confirmation of correct profile to be used please contact AIRBUS.
The Figure 6 (on next page) shows an opened oxygen container with its original generator still fitted.
In order to avoid any accidental installation of a different generator type to the one initially fitted,
each generator type is attached with a clamp equipped with a particular safety feature.
This safety feature consists in an index plate, attached to the clamp by spot welding (See Figure 7 on
next page).
This safety feature forbids in addition that a 2-mask generator can be accidentally confused with a 3-
mask generator and so on.
PROCEDURE: In order to allow the installation of 13 minutes generators in the 15 minutes type
mounting clamp the generator has to be rotated slightly, so that the index lug goes beside the index
plate, rather than engaging the plate. Then the lug does not engage the holes, and either generator can
be installed in either container type (See Figure 7).
CAUTION: To avoid any accidental installation of incorrect oxygen generators this deviation must be
done on purpose, properly traced and limited to AOG cases for a limited duration (maximum 500FH).

Today when the 15 years lifetime limit of the oxygen generators PN 117019-0X (13 minutes - early
model) or PN 117028-0X (15 minutes - early model) is reached, the different spare part vendors
propose to use the latest models PN 117042-0X (15 minutes) as a replacement.
Although B/E Aerospace have confirmed several times to AIRBUS that these early model
generators are still procurable their lead-time is higher than for latest design generators (PN
117042-0x).
In order to allow customers to permanently replace the early models oxygen generators PN
117019-0X (13 minutes) or PN 117028-0X (15 minutes) by the latest models PN 117042-0X (15
minutes), B/E Aerospace have issued two Vendor Service Bulletins which have been approved by
Airbus.
Such installation of a new generator PN 117042-0X in a container equipped initially with either PN
117019-0X or PN 117028-0X is traced by addition of a letter C at the end of the container Part
Number.
To perform the modification the Vendor Service Bulletins 117019-35-2 Rev. 02 and 117028-35-1
Rev. 01 have been issued on 09-Jan-06 in order to describe the container modification:
VSB 117019-35-2 Rev. 02 introduces PN 117042-0X (15 min.) as replacement of PN
117019-0X (13 min.).
VSB 117028-35-1 Rev. 01 introduces PN 117042-0X (15 min.) as replacement of PN
117028-0X (15 min.).
For application of any of these VSB please refer to the Airbus SIL 35-012.
If an increased performance is needed we remind that the normal procedure is to order a dedicated
Airbus Service Bulletin to the Airbus UPGRADE SERVICES (Mailto:upgrade.services@airbus.com).
This will allow the operational documents (FCOM) to be updated and A/C to be certified for 15 minutes
operation .
The oldest oxygen generators PN 117010-0X (13.5 minutes) installed on first A300 aircraft are not
interchangeable with other generator models PN 117016-0X, 117019-XX, 117028-XX, 117042-XX
for the following reasons:
Interfaces of these generators are different from one to another, in particular the fixation in the
container.
The generator PN 117016-0X series are not qualified for fixation in a container with a single clamp.
The flow characteristics are different (different descent profile).
The oxygen generators PN 117016-0X (15 minutes) and PN 117019-XX, 117028-XX, 117042-
XX (13 & 15 minutes) are not interchangeable due to the same reasons as explained in above
paragraph 3.4.1.
The oxygen generators PN 117019-3X (14 minutes) and PN 117019-XX, 117028-XX, 117042-XX
(13 & 15 minutes) are not interchangeable for the following reasons:
The 22 minutes generators PN 117019-2X, PN 117028-2X & PN 117042-2X are not interchangeable
with other generator models PN 117016-0X, 117019-XX, 117028-0X, 117042-0X series mainly due
to dimensions that are not compatible.
NONE of the oxygen generators manufactured by Drger Aerospace (15 minutes and 22 minutes) are
interchangeable for the following reasons:

CONTAINER SERIES code.
This code incorporates several variables.
S, G, W, E series are applicable to this convention.
Series S denotes a unit containing a generator providing 15 minutes supply of oxygen and a
grey profile colour. Series S uses a muscle wire latch, which has been made obsolete and
was replaced by a solenoid latch (becomes series G).
Series G denotes a 15 minutes generator and a grey profile colour. This series uses a
solenoid latch and replaces series S.
Series W denotes a 15 minutes generator and a white profile colour.
Series E denotes a 22 minutes generator and a grey profile colour.
For more detail on the retrofit from series S to series G please refer to:

Other series of B/E Aerospace oxygen containers exist with different Part Number structure.
For full detail on any container specification we recommend to refer to the associated CMM.
3.6.1 DOOR COLOUR
The door colour (last two digits XX of the part number) does not have any effect on the container
performance or technical interchangeability.
Consequently the decision to fit a container with a different colour is only let to the operator
decision.
Fixation profiles may have different colours that may be more or less visible to the persons present
in the cabin.
However mixing of brown, grey and white profiles has no impact on the container performance or
interchangeability.
Again the decision to fit a container with a different profile colour is let to the operator decision.
Tables 1a) to 1d) detail the interchangeability for all B/E Aerospace (formerly Puritan Bennett)
container part numbers between themselves.
MANDATORY: The emergency descent profile indicated in the FCOM of the affected aircraft
must be replaced by a new descent profile adapted to the new performance.
For confirmation of correct profile to be used please contact AIRBUS.
ALSO the crew must be clearly informed of this temporary change.
Any of the above interchangeability (with or without condition) applies to AOG situations only.
Therefore it is required for the aircraft to recover its original configuration at the earliest
opportunity and within 500FH at the latest.

In addition installation of a container with INCREASED number of masks is also possible (installation of less masks is not acceptable).
CAUTION: Two way interchangeability is permitted between containers with the same duration of O2 supply. Replacing a container by one with a longer duration of O2 supply is also permitted.
Replacing a container by one with a shorter duration of O2 supply is only acceptable if conditions detailed in section 3.7.4 are met.

Tables 3a) to 3d) detail the container interchangeability between vendors Drger Aerospace
and B/E Aerospace.
Interchangeability is possible unconditionally only if all following criteria are fulfilled (except for
A330/A340 aircraft as per above NOTE):
Container type is identical.
Door opening orientation is identical.
Lanyard length and tube length are identical.
Number of masks is identical or is HIGHER.
(for example PN AE5L43-XX may be replaced by PN 14C22L23XXX0003 but not by
12C22L23XXX0003).
Oxygen supply duration is identical or is HIGHER.
Drger Aerospace part numbers (if used) must end with design evolution code 0003
or 0004 or 0005 or 0006.
MANDATORY: The emergency descent profile indicated in the FCOM of the affected aircraft
must be replaced by a new descent profile adapted to the new performance.
ALSO the crew must be clearly informed of this temporary change.
Any of the above interchangeability (with or without condition) applies to AOG situations only.
Therefore it is required for the aircraft to recover its original configuration at the earliest
opportunity and within 500FH at the latest.
All part numbers listed down the same column are interchangeable, taking into account O2 supply duration. By column we mean a single vertical line of text.
In addition installation of a container with INCREASED number of masks is also possible (installation of less masks is not acceptable).
CAUTION:- Full two way interchangeability is permitted between containers with the same duration of O2 supply.(As indicated by the arrows) Replacing a container by one with a longer duration of O2
supply is also permitted. Replacing a container by one with a shorter duration of O2 supply is only acceptable if conditions detailed in section 3.8.1 are met.
