Textbook:
Transportation Engineering, 4th Edition, Paul W. Wright and Norman J. Ashford,
Wiley, 1998

Prerequisite:
CE222/L

Course Objectives:
This course will provide students with an understanding of the history and operation of
several principal modes of transportation. The principal modes include highways, air,
inland waterways, railroads, and coast shipping and ocean transportation. The student
should be able to understand and apply various design principles to carry out basic aspects of
transportation engineering design.

Students should also be able to understand the fundamental concepts behind the design of
transportation modes such as operational and vehicular characteristics, traffic control,
transportation planning and human factors.

Evaluation:
15% Homework, 35% Midterm, 45% Final Exam, 5%Participation

There will be two exams, a mid-term and a final. The mid-term exam will cover the first half of
the course. The final exam will be comprehensive but focus on the second half of the course. Both
exams will be open book, open notes. Make up of exams will be at the discretion of the instructor
and will be allowed only under the most extraordinary circumstances (e.g. hospitalization).

About 7 homework assignments are also required during the quarter. Homework and solutions
will be posted on the blackboard. Each homework is worth 10 points toward the total
homework grade. Late homework will have the following penalties: up to 1 class late: 4
points; up to 1 week late: no credit. Note: Any assignment submitted after lecture begins
on the date it is due will be considered late.

You are expected to meet every class meeting on time and prepared. Attendance will be taken.
Should you find it necessary to miss a class for any reason, you are expected to notify your
instructor as early as the absence is knownpreferably before the absence.

University and Department Policies

Copying another students work without giving credits, including copying homework, copying
lab reports and copying computer programs, is considered plagiarism. There is also a zero
tolerance policy on cheating during exams. Both plagiarism and cheating will be
prosecuted as a violation of the Cal Poly Pomona Student Code of Conduct. This code is
published at http://dsa.csupomona.edu/judicialaffairs/. The Civil Engineering Department has
also adopted a new policy regarding classroom examinations. This new policy covers tests,
quizzes, mid-terms, finals, and any other written exam in civil engineering courses. The
Policy can be found at:
http://www.csupomona.edu/~ce/Current/Classroom%20Examination%20Policy.pdf
It is the students responsibility to be familiar with these policies.

The University provides numerous support services to aid students such as writing tutoring, and
career counseling. The following web site lists places to assist you in the classroom.
http://www.csupomona.edu/~academic/support/

Cell phones are not allowed in classroom during exams. You may bring cell phones to non-exam
class meetings so long as they are silenced and not used during class.

If you require special accommodations or have concerns or questions about being able to
meet the requirements of this course, I am available to meet with you personally.
