PHYSICS 74 LEC VECTORS

1. While following a treasure map, you start at an old oak tree. You first walk 825 m directly south, then tum and
walk 1.25 km at 30o west of north, and finally walk 1.00 km at 40o north of east, where you find the treasure: a
biography of Isaac Newton! (a) To return to the old oak tree, in what direction should you head and how far will
you walk? Use components to solve this problem. (b) To see whether your calculation in part (a) is reasonable,
check it with a graphical solution drawn roughly to scale.
2. You are given vectors A = 5i - 6.5j and B = -3.5i + 7.0j. A third vector C lies in the xy-plane. Vector C is
perpendicular to vector A, and the scalar product of C with B is 15.0. From this information, find the components
of vector C.
3. Given the following vectors: A = 4i -5j + 2k , B = 3j k and C = -2i + 6j. Find
a. 3C 2A
b. A x C
c. A B C
d. A (B xC)
