El Nio Storm Slams La Jolla, SD
Early January brings rain, hail, and wind; flooding and damage across county

Staff Writer
Having been in a serious
drought, California had been
expecting this El Nio. Howev-
er, after the latest El Nio storm
hit San Diego in the first week of
January, it is clear that San Diego
was not ready for a storm of this
magnitude.
According to FOX News, this
El Nio is expected to be one
of the top three strongest since
1950, and is supposed to peak
during the months of January,
February, and March. Bill Patzert,
climatologist for NASAs Jet Pro-
pulsion Laboratory in La Caa-
da Flintridge, says Californians
should expect mudslides, heavy
rainfall, one storm after another
like a conveyor belt.
Heavy thunder, lightning, and
rainfall swept through San Diego
County Wednesday, January 6th,
prompting various weather warn-
ings all over the county. Flash
flood warnings took place in Ch-

As we begin 2016, changes are abound here at LJHS and in the
SDUSD. A 4.0/4.25 Honor Roll has been proposed; math teacher Mrs.
Zink will return after a 1-year absence, and free periods have been
scrapped by the District.
The Hi-Tide will keep readers informed as these stories develop.
No Free Periods
for Class of 17
District ends assigned time
home periods for seniors
In an effort to increase funding,
the San Diego Unified School Dis-
trict will be requiring all students
to take a full schedule (six peri-
ods) next year.
Seniors, who can currently take
up to two assigned time home
periods, will no longer be able to
escape to home (read: Rigober-
tos) each day.
The SDUSD receives more
government funding when stu-
dents are involved in curriculum
content throughout the entire in-
structional day.
Independent study programs
are expected to remain intact.
Also unaffected are senior-only
classes that do not meet every day.
Free periods - specifically in
the morning or the last period -
have long been a staple of the 12th
grade experience at LJHS.
Electives such as auto shop, art,
journalism, and photography are
expected to be in increased de-
mand among seniors with suffi-
cient credits who need to fill their
schedules.
No additional details have been
provided by the district, but coun-
selors at LJHS have already begun
preparations for this new reality.

Perhaps the most surprising
thing that came out of this partic-
ular storm was the tornado warn-
ing that was sent out to the western
and central sections of the county
as wind gusts of 30 to 40 mph hit
Mrs. Zink to
Return to LJHS
Teacher to be back on
campus after one year
After being relieved of her teach-
ing position in 2014, Mrs. Zink
is expected to return to the LJHS
campus at the beginning of the sec-
ond semester.
Sources tell the Hi-Tide that Mrs.
Zink was exonerated of accusations
involving an incident in 2014, and
has reached an agreement whereby
she will be returning to the school.
Mrs. Zink has been absent from
LJHS - with the exception of brief
visits - for over a year.
Many teachers welcome back
Mrs. Zink after concern was ex-
pressed regarding her continued
absence despite the fact that she
had reportedly been cleared.
Some parents, on the other hand,
had collected petitions against the
math teacher at an event in Octo-
ber 2014, as reported by the Hi-
Tide at the time.
Although it is unclear what po-
sition Mrs. Zink will have at LJHS,
or what will happen to the substi-
tute(s) teaching her classes, sources
say her return has been finalized.
Further details have not been re-
leased.
This marks the longest non-med-
ical, maternal, or military absence
of a staff member since 2013.

4.25 GPA minimums
An honor roll system for La
Jolla High School has been pro-
posed by student representa-
tives.
Pending administrative ap-
proval, the GPAs will be 4.0 for
Honor Roll recognition and 4.25
for Principals Honor Roll rec-
ognition. Freshmen would be
recognized for any GPA above
3.5.
LJHS does not currently have
an honor roll program, however,
Muirlands Middle School does.
Nationwide high school honor
roll programs typically include
students with GPAs above 3.5.
LJHS student representatives,
however, said that they want
to make the recognition more
meaningful by narrowing the re-
quirements to 4.0/4.25.
Many parents are concerned
about how the proposed GPAs
will function with LJHS diverse
student body, especially consid-
ering that the Principals Honor
Roll would exclude students who
do not take AP courses.
Concerns were also voiced
that lower-scoring students
college applications would be
hindered without the honor roll
qualification. However, the im-
pact of honor roll recognition on
college applications is said to be
minimal.
The proposal will be need to
be approved by Student Council
and by administration.

La Jolla was specifically affected
by flooding, which caused a sink-
hole at the south end of La Jolla
Shores by the Beach and Tennis

but during the El Nio storms it
became a mass of water and bro-
ken concrete.
This was caused by erosion of
the sand beneath as surging wa-
ter coming in from the flooding
of the town met surging water
coming from sea. San Diego City
Stormwater and Transportation
Spokesperson Bill Harris predicts
that various areas in San Diego
will face a similar fate as El Nio
continues.
At present, this El Nio is cur-
rently tied with the amount of
rainfall that occurred in the 1997-
1998 El Nio season.
Building remodeled, restored to better serve village

Back in June of 2015, the La Jol-
la YMCA Firehouse began a five-
month remodel that hoped to
transform its dysfunctional floor
plan into a spacious and modern
present-day agora of sorts.
With the renovations having
been completed in November, the
building now stands as a remind-
er of the rich history the structure
has garnered since its construc-
tion in 1937.
The budget for the project was
first estimated to be around $1.7
million. Main problems that the

the building was midway through

special glimpse into the future

No Justice for the Defenseless
A young, African-American boy killed for playing with a toy gun

Due to the corrupt system,
I have a dead child. I felt as if
breath has been taken out of
my body once again, were the
words spoken by Samaria Rice,
mother of Tamir Rice. Twelve
year-old African American
Tamir Rice was playing with a
fake gun at Cudell Recreation
Center in Cleveland, Ohio,
when Officer Timothy Loeh-
mann was quick to jump to
conclusions assuming the gun
was real and shot him dead on
November 22, 2014.
This was a child playing with
a toy, yet people still have the
audacity to justify his death,
arguing the officer may have
thought he was in serious
danger. Many apparently be-
lieve it reasonable to compare
a trained police officer to a
twelve year-old child. The re-
peating pattern of cop violence
on black victims is getting way
out of hand.
Liberty and Justice for All
was a concept we didnt quite
follow through with in this
situation. Instead, neither the
officer who killed Tamir nor
the officer who was with him
will face any criminal charges.
Prosecutor Tim McGinty ar-
gues that although Tamir Rice
was either handing the toy
over to the officers or showing
them it wasnt a real gun, the
officers perceived it differently
and acted quickly.
A statement released from
Tamirs family states, "Prosecu-
tor McGinty deliberately sabo-

for my son, and acting instead

As if this would make Tamirs
death better, the officers claimed
that they believed he was an
adult. Ohio is an open carry
state, so what law was Tamir
breaking had his toy gun been
a real gun? Why isnt the NRA
defending Tamirs right to play
with a toy gun in an open-car-
ry state? Somehow, fully-grown
white men with real guns (in
Oregon) are labeled as patriots
while a black child with a toy is
seen as being dangerous.
While there is lack of justice
for Tamir Rice, 150 white mili-
tiamen recently took over a Fed-
eral Building in Oregon, threat-
ening violence if removed, and
not one shot has been fired at
them. And yet a black child is
shot dead without hesitation
while playing with a toy gun.
Racism still runs deeply in our
police force and justice must
be served. Riots are rightfully
breaking out as we all wish we
could live in a country where
Tamir Rice could have turned
thirteen.
Is a board with two wheels worth all
the hype?

This past holiday season
we have seen an explosive
popularity in an interesting
and fun new toy: the hov-
erboard. It is not, however,
a board suspended by air,
but rather more similar to a
Segway without handlebars.
My friend told me she usually
called swag-ways.
Since their release, the
boards have become one of
the most popular purchases.
Along with the cool tricks and
easy transportation, howev-
er, comes injury. There have
been countless videos of peo-
ple falling and more broken
wrists than ever. Riders have
used their hoverboards to
their limits, and people have
condemned hoverboards as
both stupid and dangerous.
To an extent, I agree with
them. Why cant you just use
a scooter, skateboard or bike?
Or, how about your own two
feet for that matter? When in
crowded settings, maneuver-
ing around on the boards can

get difficult for both the rider
and its bystanders. It also cre-
ates a problem for people who
dont have good balance, or in
conditions where balance can
be easily thrown off, i.e. wind,
crowds, rugged terrain. Speak-
ing of the weather, hover-
boards are useless in the rain,
and could corrode easily, caus-
ing damage. So what do you do
when caught in the rain? Due
to safety concerns, they have
even become illegal in malls
and schools in New York.
What most people ignore
about hoverboards, however,
is their easy transportation and
convenience for people who
have knee problems and/or is-
sues covering longer distances
on foot, like arthritis or joint
pain. If used in the right place
and at the right time, hover-
boards could become a useful
tool for those who need as-
sistance walking. Its obvious,
however, that hoverboards
have specific limitations on
who they could help, exclud-
ing those with poor balance,
inability to stand, and obesity.

to Europes
Woes?

2015 brought a massive wave
of immigrants from the Mid-
dle East to Europe. Some were
fleeing conflict, others just
wanted a better life for their
family. Whatever the reason,
the massive wave of immigra-
tion has brought many chal-
lenges to the nations that these
immigrants are fleeing to.
The massive surge of people
has also brought an increase in
crime, especially against wom-
en. Recently, police in Sweden
have been accused of covering
up rapes by immigrant males
at festivals. Police in Cologne
have also been accused of do-
ing the same with a series of
rapes on New Years Eve.
Due in part to this recent
wave of crimes, some Euro-
pean leaders have begun con-
sidering deportation of recent
immigrants as a possible solu-
tion.
Add to this problem are two
important concerns: the first
is that there is now a gender
imbalance in many European
regions. 58% of recent refugees
are men, 17% women, with
the remaining 25% children.
There is now an estimated 123
boys per 100 girls in Sweden.
The second concern is that
some of the immigrants come
from cultures where mistreat-
ment of women is common-
place. There has been a notice-
able increase in crime, mostly
violent and property crime, but
also in women being raped,
with the influx of the recent
immigrants. To make matters
worse, young immigrant males
are also being pressured into
gangs. In fact, gender imbal-
ance may have been a factor in
the increase in rapes.
Many of these recent immi-
grants are in Europe illegal-
ly, which begs the question:
should illegal immigrants be
deported? With the increase
in crime as well as other issues
posed by their presence, de-
portation might not be a bad
idea.
The problem with deporta-
tion, however, is the fact that
illegal immigrants may not be
willing to leave. There is also
the logistical problem of mov-
ing them to other countries.
Illegal immigrants, however,
must be deported until Euro-
peans nations have the proper
facilities to deal with the mas-
sive waves of people. With this,
these countries will be safer
and better able to deal with any
issues arising from both locals
and legal immigrants.

Did North Korea get a
Hydrogen Bomb?

North Korea reported that
it set off a hydrogen bomb on
Wednesday, January 6th. This
is a claim that, if true, could
be deeply unsettling. Many
experts around the world,
though, arent quite ready to
believe them. As the detona-
tion was said to have taken
place underground, the Unit-
ed States, South Korea,
and Japan monitored
their seismic instruments
around the area where the
bomb supposedly went off.
They all agree that the data
doesnt match the claim of
confirmed H-bomb deto-
nations. Where confirmed
detonations measured 6.8
on the seismic scale, this
one came in at 4.7, closer
to the 4.8 detected when
North Korea tested an
atomic bomb several years
ago. So, if North Korea didnt
detonate an H-bomb, what did
they detonate? Experts in the
United States and South Korea
think that North Korea set off
an atomic bomb, which they
are confirmed to possess.

than 516 attacks were report-
ed in Cologne, Germany, of
which 40% were sexual as-
saults. These attacks sparked
outrage across Germany at
both the police response and
recent influx of immigrants,
with right-wing groups staging

sponded with tear gas and wa-
ter cannons. The recent influx

Merkel has still not changed
her stance on welcoming any
refugees who obey German
laws and integrate into Ger-
man society.
These attacks were not the
only ones in Europe, as attacks
in Sweden were also reported.
Police from Kalmar described
two of the men they arrested as
refugees.
In Salzburg,Austria two men
were arrested for sexual assault
on both New Years Eve and
Day. In Zurich, Switzerland 6
women reported that they were
robbed from one side,(while)
being groped from the other
side. While in Helsinki,Fin-
land police there stated that
they were investigating crim-
inal offenses related on New
Years Eve centered around a
gathering of asylum-seekers.

is anyone sure exactly what
implications such a certain-
ty could have. But we can be
sure that our governments
will continue to monitor any
possibility of it, and be ready
to act in the event of any new
developments.
Spanish Princess on Trial
in Landmark Case

Currently, there is a trial go-
ing on in Spain that is the first
of its kind. Princess Cristina is
being charged with tax fraud.
It is a landmark case because
it is the first trial of a
royal in modern Spanish
history. She is accused of
participating in the al-
leged illegal activities of
her husband, Inaki Ur-
dangarin, also accused of
tax fraud, in addition to
embezzling public funds,
money laundering, influ-
ence peddling, and more.
The princess could serve
eight years, and her hus-
band, up to 19.5. Urdan-
garin was the president
of a supposed non-profit
organization called Noos,
which promised to set
up sports games in the
Balerean islands by way of
an agreement with the lo-
cal governments there. How-
ever, they apparently grossly
overcharged them, receiving
$6.5 million in public money.

Iran Reconstructs
Nuclear Reactors

After much controversy, Iran
has finally removed the core
of its Arak heavy-water nu-
clear reactor and filled it with
cement. In Irans long nuclear
negotiations with several other
nations last year, the country
has agreed to reconstruct the
heavy-water reactor so it would
be unable of yielding material
for a nuclear weapon. This de-
cision helps Iran grow closer to
relief from economic sanctions
negotiated in exchange for
changes to its nuclear industry.
The United States, the Unit-
ed Kingdom, China, France,
Russia, Iran, and Germany ne-
gotiated and created the Joint
Comprehensive Plan of Action
where all other six nations have
agreed to participate in the re-
design and construction of a
modernized reactor at Arak.
Although Iran denied that
they intended to develop any
nuclear weapons, and instead
were using the Arak nuclear
reactor to produce isotopes
for cancer and other medical
treatments, they still managed
to agree to the request of all six
nations in order to maintain
peace. The spokesperson for
Irans atomic energy agency,
Behrouz Kamalvandi, tells Iran
themselves from the couple,
with King Felipe VI stripping
his sister of any royal title. This
move is to maintain royal dig-
nity and public support. Felipe
took the crown in 2014 after
his father, Juan Carlos abdicat-
ed. Felipe is already far more
popular than his father, who
lost favor with many after it
was revealed that he broke his
hip in an expensive tax-pay-
er funded elephant-hunting
trip in Africa. After just over a

Its that time of the year again when the Girl Scouts invade the halls of our schools, have
taken over the parking lots of our local grocery stores, and invite themselves to the front steps By Austin Iverson

is basically two graham crackers with a soft, smooth, peanut butter in
the middle. The cookie part is sweet, while the creamy center is salty.
Do-si-Dos are extremely similar to Nutter Butter cookies. In fact, if
youre going to have a peanut butter sandwich cookie, youre better
off buying Nutter Butter cookies. Theyre probably cheaper.

What It Means to Go Vegan

What exactly does it mean to
go vegan? According to Vegan
Starter Kit, an online forum for
all things veganism, becoming
vegan is beginning a way of
living that seeks to exclude, as
far as possible and practica-
ble, all forms of exploitation
of, and cruelty to, animals for
food, clothing and any other
purpose.
Basically, if youre vegan, you
dont harm animals in any sort
of way. Not for food, not for
clothes, not for anything. It
seems like that would be a no
brainer, not to hurt animals.
However, while the not wear-
ing of actual animal skin or
parts is pretty common around

that include dairy or meat is
quite ordinary.

and even milk in cereal, most
people dont realize just how

Quentin Tarantino is an
American film writer and di-
rector famous for his movies
full of hyperbolic violence and
exceptionally written, lengthy
dialogue scenes. His films in-
clude Pulp Fiction, Reser-
voir Dogs, and most recently
The Hateful Eight, Tarantino
is considered one of todays
best filmmakers.
Born in Tennessee and raised
in California, his early passion
for movies landed him a job
at a movie store. It was there
that he wrote scripts for True
Romance and Natural Born
Killers.
In 1992, he released Res-
ervoir Dogs, a crime drama
about a botched diamond heist
revealed to be a police set up,
but told in a very creative way.
The film opens with the eight
mobsters eating breakfast at
a diner and then skips to the
rendezvous point, an empty
warehouse where they wait for
the others.
As each of the eight men ar-
rive, they put their stories to-
gether and more details of the
plot are revealed, without ever
directly showing the heist. His
unconventional and disjointed
narrative storytelling gained
Tarantino a cult following.
In 1994 he released Pulp Fic-
tion, another crime film about
the intersecting lives of mob-

to veganism because people be-
lieve that by cutting out certain
food groups, such as meat and

Today, movies in theaters are
digital files projected onto the
screen, but with The Hateful
Eight, Tarantino wanted to pay
homage to the cinema road-
shows of the early to mid twen-
tieth century, when a night at
the movies was a big event for
people to get dressed up in their
fanciest sequin dresses and tux-
edos and hit the town.
Movies released on Ultra Pa-
navision 70mm film include
classics such as Ben-Hur,
Gone With the Wind, and
Lawrence of Arabia. The ini-
tial release of The Hateful
dairy, you are subjecting your
body to a dangerous lack of
nutrients.
However, there are plenty
of vegan foods, that serve as
perfectly fine supplements for
the more common protein
and calcium staples which
everyone else is accustomed
to. Take a hamburger for ex-
ample, more specifically the
meat.
Eating meat is one of the
easiest ways to give our bod-
ies the protein we need. But if
youre a vegan, meat is not an
option. So in order to get that
necessary protein, vegans will
go for the lesser-known pro-
tein heroes, such as beans,
grains, nuts, seeds and in fact,
nearly all vegetables.
This concept of switching
out the more staple foods of
a food group, for the lesser
known ones, can be applied
to any other lack of nutrient
argument thrown at vegans.
All in all, becoming vegan
is not easy. Giving up foods
that we normally eat without
thinking is almost an impos-
sible task for some.
However, if you are serious
about protecting the animals,
and maybe even bettering
your own health, going vegan
is an excellent choice.
Eight on Christmas was a
roadshow experience in lim-
ited theaters due to lack of
70mm projectors. I had the
pleasure of seeing The Hate-
ful Eight in 70mm.
You get a program, the over-
ture plays before the movie,
and the 3 hour and 7 minute
movie is broken into halves by
an intermission, something
not seen in modern movies.
The colors and movement
looked amazing with the
grain and flickering of the
film, and the format of 70mm
lends itself wonderfully to the
wide shots of the Telluride,
Colorado landscape.
Quentin Tarantinos pas-
sion for the silver screen
comes through with every
subsequent project he cre-
ates. His writing and direct-
ing chops, gripping dialogue,
and intense, gruesome action
scenes cement him as one of
the greatest filmmakers of
our time, if not all time.
His movies are fun to watch
because they come from his
love for the medium, which
he uses to pay tribute to the
filmmakers that inspired
him. Reservoir Dogs, Pulp
Fiction, Kill Bill, Inglori-
ous Basterds, and Django
Unchained are all on Net-
flix, and The Hateful Eight
is viewable on 70mm film at
ArcLight La Jolla and AMC
Mission Valley 20, and digi-
tally anywhere else.

As gender becomes less of
a defining factor for fash-
ion trends, more and more
companies have been adding
unisex clothing lines to their
stores. This breakthrough in
gender stereotyping exempli-
fies the progressive mindset
of this generation. Here are a
few unisex brands that have
caught the eye of the media
during the past year.
The new brand, Not Equal, is
a gender neutral fashion brand
that has been getting a lot of
buzz because of the famous
designer Fabio Costa. Fabio
was featured in the show Proj-
ect Runway season 10 2014-
2015 and Project Runway
All-Stars season 4. As stated
on Not Equals website, their
ambition is to push bound-
aries while offering rational
fashion.
One brand that seems to be
slightly ahead of its time is
called Muttonhead. This com-
pany is centered in Toronto,
Canada and was started in
2009. This line is special be-
cause besides being gender
neutral, it is also age neutral.
Recently they made a chil-
drens line of their best selling
adult clothes.
TILLYandWILLIAM de-
signed by Jessica Lapidos and
Tom Barranca has both for-
mal and casual gender neutral
wear. Most of the clothes are
nude and black to add to the
minimalistic aesthetic. The
websites states that TILLY-
andWILLIAM is more than
just a brand, it is a belief in a
new era of design.
Even the well known brand
American Apparel has started
coming out with more unisex
basics, proving that even the
most well-known brands con-
tinue to evolve. As traditional
social roles continue to be ex-
panded and broken, fashion
also continues to be revolu-
tionized.
Jaden Smith has become a
new model for Louis Vuittons
womenswear. He appeared on
the designer of Louis Vuitton,
Nicolas Ghesquires, Insta-
gram wearing a dress from his
new line.
In this picture, Jaden is not
made to look like a woman
in any other way besides the
dress itself proving that a man
does not need to be in transi-
tion in order to wear typical
womens clothing, an idea that
breaks all gender roles and so-
cial patterns.
Mr. Ghesquire was quoted
saying, wearing a skirt comes
as naturally to [Jayden Smith]
as it would to a women who,
long ago, granted herself per-
mission to wear a mans trench
or tuxedo.
Overall, these up-and-com-
ing brands along with ads sim-
ilar to Louis Vuittons, have
made breakthroughs not only
in the fashion industry but
also in the way that people
perceive gender.
Along with taking up small
model projects, Jaden Smith
has started a project of his
own. He is currently in the
process of launching his own
unisex clothing brand named
MSFT. In an interview with
CR Fashion Book, the designer
explains that his clothes rep-
resent a creative work force
dedicated to supporting and
waking up the population of
planet earth, through attain-
ing knowledge and personal
growth.
He also adds in that his graph-
ics are inspired by a chemistry
class. His new collection of
hats, hoodies, and tee-shirts
are very simple, since he is in-
corporating mostly black and
white colors.
Along with simple colors,
Jaden also incorporates geo-
metric shapes and designs,
along with words that rep-
resent the MSFTS ethos. I
want my T-shirts to look like a
mixture of Basquiats and Ein-
steins personal notebooks, he
says.
As time progresses, it be-
comes more clear that gender
should not be used as a lim-
iting factor. Questioning the
reasoning behind traditional
mindsets has not only proved
to be a ground for innova-
tion, but has also allowed for
a deeper understanding of the
human condition in relation
to society.

USC Season End in a Nutshell KINGDOM TO

As the season came to a
close, the USC football team
took the field at Southwest-
ern College- their practice
location for the 2015 Holiday
Bowl, one final practice before
the seniors and those choosing
to enter the NFL draft played
their last game as Trojans.
It was evident that the play-
ers were eager to play for their
new Head Coach, Clay Hel-
ton, as they worked hard and
played enthusiastically, despite
knowing that it would be the
last time the same group would
be together for practice. Junior
Sua Cravens, who recently an-
nounced his decision to forgo
his senior year and enter the
NFL draft, stated, Hes a guy
that we love, we have a team
thatll play for a coach, thatll
die for a coach. Sua suggest-
ed that if Helton had been
the coach the entire season,
the team wouldve been more
motivated, wouldve played
harder, and might have even
been in a different position in
the Holiday Bowl, saying, If
Helton was at the head for the
whole season, things would be
different, wed have the chance
to make the Rose Bowl, or the
playoff. Sua seemed confident
heading into his last game as a
Trojan.
The team appeared strong,
despite the recent events sur-
rounding left tackle Chad
Wheeler, who was sent to the
hospital for a psychiatric eval-
uation following an incident
with the police in mid-Decem-
ber. Coach Helton addressed
the issue, saying As you see,
Chad is not out here, just
based on a lack of preparation
hes not going to be a part of
this bowl game with us. We
look forward to getting him
back in January, and having a
great spring. It was obviously
still a very private matter, as
Helton declined to expand,
and all players refrained from
speaking about the issue.
The Trojans had twen-
ty-four seniors playing in the
game, including Quarterback
Cody Kessler, who was recent-
ly selected to play in the 2016
Senior Bowl. He stated, The
cool thing is, we have all these
younger guys who all want to
win for the seniors, but at the
same time, its just another
game, win for yourself, win
for the guy next to you I
want to win for everybody.
Kesslers had four coaches in
his five years at USC. He had
high hopes of finishing his ca-
reer as a Trojan on a high note,
but ultimately the team fell to
Wisconsin.
Despite all the hard work in
practice, the Trojans still man-
aged to find time for fun during
their stay in San Diego, as the
team literally danced their way
through practice, attended a
concert in North Park, toured
a Navy Ship, and explored the
zoo. Coach Helton seemed
most excited about the zoo,
We get to go to the zoo now,
which is great, I cant wait to
be a part of that with the kids.
Were going straight to the li-
ons, and its going to be a fun
afternoon for us.
As the Trojans headed to-
wards their buses, prepared
for their last game, the morale
was high, the game plan was
set, and they had only had two
things on their mind: winning,
and finding out what was for
lunch.

Buried deep in the doping
crisis of the athletic world, the
UK wants to reset world re-
cords for the Olympic games
in order to give athletes a clean
slate and provide opportunity
for those who have not used
drugs to take the titles they de-
serve.
The sports governing body
has made proposals to extend
bans on drug cheats and to cre-
ate a public list of athletes who
have been drug tested. British
Athletics (UKA) chairman,
Ed Warner, noted according
to BBC News that radical re-
form is presently needed.
Russia has been barred from
international competition and
possibly even the incoming
Olympic Games for supposed
state-sponsored doping.
Records have been found of
money dispensed in order to
clear unwanted drug tests and
reports of laboratory samples
gone missing.
Many other suspicious deal-
ings have been uncovered and
are not making the future of
Russias athletes look very

Barry Bonds, Alex Rodri-
guez, Lance Armstrong, and
now Peyton Manning?
The Qatar-based broadcast-
ing company, Al Jazeera, re-
ported in late December that
NFL quarterback Peyton Man-
ning, of the Denver Broncos,
had previously used human
growth hormone (HGH).
In 2011, Manning under-
went two neck surgeries, and
allegedly used HGH during
his recovery, or are the surger-
ies just a convenient excuse?
Charles Sly, a former em-
ployee of an Indianapolis an-
ti-aging clinic, claimed that
the clinic supplied Manning
and other prominent athletes
with performance-enhancing
drugs.
Reportedly, the hormones
were shipped with Ashley
Mannings name on them the
football stars wife, so his name
would never be connected.
Sly has since recanted ev-
erything, saying it was all a
lie. However, Manning is still
insistently denying the claims,
calling them complete gar-
bage.
Human growth hormone is
naturally produced by the hu-
man body, but extra injected
doses increase muscle mass. It
is also noted for its ability to
speed healing after an injury,
and burn fat.
Some have pointed out that
Ashley Manning may have
used HGH for fertility rea-
sons (the couple had twins in
2011), or that Manning used it
to recover from surgery.
Nonetheless, endocrinol-
ogist Dr. Alan Rogol told Al
Jazeera that neither plausible
reason is a currently approved
argument that would lead to
the prescription of HGH.
In October 2014, the NFL
began testing for the presence
of HGH in players bodies.
There have since been no pos-
itive results.

Shaving for Speed or Suave?
Athletes Across the Nation Participate in the Act of Shaving Their Extremities in an At-
tempt to Improve Performance or, in Some Cases, Simply for a Mental Boost.

There are multiple opinions
and preferences when it comes
to whether or not an athlete
should shave body hair. Some
find it quite effective while
others feel that it has no real
benefit. Yet is there any defi-
nite answer to this question
that many athletes seem to be
curious about? Based upon
the lack of scientific evidence
and studies that have been
conducted to show whether or
not it works, it really depends
on the perspective and experi-
ence of the individual.
Top triathlete and cyclist
Vern Lovic believes that shav-
ing, although not scientifically
proven, is very effective. His
reasons for his own practice of
shaving, as well as other ath-
letes he is acquainted with, is
for improving performance,
the ease of treating injuries,
and just for the look. Lovic,
who has been shaving his
body for over twenty years,
describes the ritual as adding
a substantial performance
advantage according to Blue
Ridge Outdoors. It is not as

much about becoming more
aerodynamic, but more on pro-
viding an essential mental boost
for top performance. Smooth
and sleek from a fresh shave,
Lovic has more of an ability to
feel the water he is pushing out
of the way; after each stroke he
feels more and more invincible,
cutting through the water like
a knife.
Aside from a mental boost,
many people describe their
hairless body as being rid of an
exterior rug that once allowed
heat to be trapped inside, but
could now be released. This
provides an extra comfort as
body temperature rises during
exercise. Another comfort, that
many cyclists prefer, is to have
hairless legs and arms resulting
in greater ease and sanitation
when attending to cuts and oth-
er injuries. For those who have
not tried this method, many
athletes encourage it, especially
because if you don't like your
experience, your hair will al-
ways grow back.
For those that don't promote
shaving, their opinion is based
more on the necessity of such a
practice. Dr. Garret Rock, who
advises over 80 of the worlds

top professional triathletes,
cyclists, and runners, com-
ments on shaving as having
the potential for adding a
strong mental boost, yet is
not a necessary practice for
top performance. Despite
Rocks own shaving habits, he
states, the only population
that may have a somewhat
valid argument would be very
hairy long-distance, non-wet-
suit wearing swimmers with
excellent swim technique.
That limits the numbers, a
lot according to Blue Ridge
Outdoors.
On top of this, for those
that believe shaving prevents
infection, it is actually just as
likely to get an infection with
or without hair. And no, ath-
letes should not be afraid of
getting a hair follicle infec-
tion from recovery massages.
In Dr Rocks opinion he ad-
dresses athletes saying, skip
the unfounded important
reasons to shave and tell the
truth you do it because ev-
eryone else does it and it ac-
centuates those hard earned
calf muscles.
Ultimately, there is no right
or wrong, hair grows back.

Seasoned Surfer, Garrett Mc-
Namara, Injured on 50-foot Wave

Although the rain may seem
off-and-on, the effects of the El
Nio are still taking place. Off
the coast of California some
of the biggest waves recorded
have been produced and have
been taking place during the
Mavericks surf competition,
where some of the best surfers
ride some of the biggest waves.
Garrett McNamara, one of the
biggest surf legends, wiped out
on a wave that reached 15 me-
ters (49 feet) at the Mavericks
competition.
McNamara, at 45 years old,
had the record for the biggest
wave ever surfed on, a 30 me-
ter wave off the coast of Portu-
gal. He recently wiped out on
a nearly 50 foot El Nio-fueled
wave at Half Moon Bay.
While surfing on his own af-
ter the competition was post-
poned by the storm, he was
thrown off his board smacked
into the water multiple times
before being completely
sucked in by the monster wave.
About halfway down the
wave McNamara bounced
right off the surface multiple
times. As a safety precaution,
McNamara had partially in-
flated his vest which is what
caused him to bounce off of
the water instead of just falling
straight through.
After the wave landed on
McNamara, he swam into the
breaking zone where Banner, a
jet skier, swam to get him back
to the shore and onto an am-
bulance.
McNamara found himself
with a dislocated and broken
shoulder from the impact. As
soon as he reached the hospi-
tal, he was taken into surgery
for his arm and shoulder.
After the accident, Mc-
Namara said, Surfing is my
life. It's my passion. It's what
I love to do. And, I will never
stop surfing, already wanting
to get into the waves again.
Later on Facebook, Mc-
Namara posted a photo from
the hospital captioned, Doc-
tors expect a 110% recovery.
However there is an expected
2-to-3 week recovery period.
El Nio is expected to remain
somewhat weak throughout
the rest of winter, although the
oceanic patterns have been un-
usually strong and some areas
have been flooded. There has
yet to be any major damage.

UCSD Sophomore Jordyn
McNutt earned an All- Amer-
ica Honorable Mention for her
season as a midfielder for the
Tritons womens soccer team.
The Division II Conference
Commissioners Association
honored McNutt, four other
midfielders, and fourteen play-
ers overall. McNutt was one of
only five players from the West
Coast region to be selected.
McNutt holds the 2014 and
2015 record for assists in the
California Collegiate Athletic
Association (CCAA) this year
reaching a career high of 10 as-
sists.
McNutt began playing soc-
cer at age six, and made the
Varsity team at University City
High School her freshman
year. At UC, McNutt made
the All Western League Team
First Team twice, and the Sec-
ond Team once as a junior, was
named the Centurion Athlete
of the Year as a senior, made
the U-T San Diego All-Aca-
demic Team her junior and se-
nior years, played Varsity field
hockey and ran Varsity track
and field.
Her accomplishments on
and off the field allowed her
to commit to UCSD the fall of
her senior year.
McNutts skills have allowed
her to excel at UCSD, as she
started in all 22 games the Tri-
tons played in the 2015 season.
McNutt made four goals this
season and ten assists, placing
her third on the point chart of
the team.
The Tritons soccer team
played in another CCAA
Tournament this season, ul-
timately earning the CCAA
banner with a 3-2 win over Cal
State Stanislaus, marking their
ninth CCAA banner thus far.
After the games, McNutt
spoke with the UCSD Athletic
Department and said, Weve
been working so hard all sea-
son to win this game, [so] it just
feels so good to have all this
hard work pay off. McNutts
efforts certainly paid off this
season, as she earned the All-
America Honorable Mention
and was named D2 CCA All-
West Region First Team. Both
honors were her first national
and regional recognition.
McNutt plans on playing
throughout college, is cur-
rently studying to receive her
teaching credential, and plans
to pursue a career as an ele-
mentary school teacher after
UCSD. As for now, McNutts
success on the field is her main
focus.

Actor meets with notorious Mexican fugitive

Last Friday, January 8th,
Mexican forces managed to
finally capture wanted fugitive
Joaquin El Chapo Guzman,
58, after he escaped from a
high security prison last July.
News shocked the world the
next day when an article was
published in The Rolling Stone
about a secret interview actor
Sean Penn, 55, had done with
El Chapo while he was on the
run.
El Chapo escaped from pris-
on for the second time in his
life last July by fitting through
a hole in the shower that led
to an underground tunnel.
Reportedly, this was a well-
planned scheme. There was a
motorcycle waiting for him on
the rails in the tunnel that led
to a small plane that took him
to safety.
Mexican officials have been
trying to find him ever since,
and were apparently un-
aware of the secret interview
Penn conducted in the mid-
dle of October last year, three
months after El Chapos es-
cape.
In Penns article, he talks
about the measures El Chapo
took to keep his location pri-
vate, flying Penn in on a plane
with a device that jammed ra-
dar and prohibited them from
having their cell phones. Ac-
cording to CNN, Penn does
not disclose the exact location
of their meeting, but he does
say that it took place in the
Mexican forest.
In the interview, El Cha-
po seems to talk freely and
proudly about his drug-deal-
ing business, claiming that he
supplies more heroin, meth-
amphetamine, cocaine and
marijuana than anybody else
in the world. He bragged to
Penn, I have a fleet of sub-
marines, airplanes, trucks and
boats. Perhaps there had been
a bit of surprise about how he
had been living for the past
three months as a fugitive, as
he apparently sipped tequila
in a casual patterned silk shirt
and pressed black jeans.

how cleaned up the drug lord
actually looked, calling him
remarkably well-groomed.
El Chapo was questioned
about various other subjects,
one of which including US
presidential candidate Donald
Trump, to whom El Chapo re-
ferred to as mi amigo.
El Chapo was finally recap-
tured January 8th in a police
shootout that killed six of his
people. The Mexican navy in-
vaded a home in Los Mochis,
where he was protected by a
range of residents.
According to CNN, El Chapo
escaped from the police via a
secret passage in the home that
descended into a tunnel that

It took 90 minutes for Mex-
ican Marines to then find the
secret passage and apprehend
El Chapo.
According to Mexican of-
ficials, one of the factors that
lead to El Chapos capture were
his calls to movie producers
concerning a potential biopic.
He had been seeking help in
Mexican actress Kate del Cas-
tillo, who planned the inter-
view with Penn, to plan a mov-
ie about his life. According to
CNN, US law enforcement of-
ficials stated that the tracking
of cell phones and electronic
exchanges among people close
to Guzman was critical in his
recapture.
Last summer, the US gov-
ernment requested El Chapos
extradition to the prisons of
the US. The request is being
considered by federal officials
and could take up to a year, but
El Chapos attorney is fighting
the extradition.

Woman Raped in NYC Park
18-year-old attacked and raped by teenagers in Brooklyn

On Thursday January 12th,
a woman was raped in a
neighborhood park in Brook-
lyn, New York. The eighteen
year-old was beat and raped
by a group of five teenagers,
while her father attempted to
call the police.
After stopping in a corner
store for drinks, the group
consisting of a 14 year-old,
two 15 year-olds and two 17
year-old boys entered Osborn
Playground where they spot-
ted the pair, who were sup-
posedly drinking beers in the
park together.
The father later claimed that
one of them put a gun in my
face, telling me to run, and all
of them had their way with
her, however, the daughter
later claimed that she did not
notice any of the men wield-
ing a gun, and no gun has yet
to be recovered.
After fleeing the scene, the
father ran into a few nearby
shops, screaming about what
was happening and asking
to use a phone, since he did

Armed ranchers storm federal building to make demands

On the night of Satur-
day, January 1st, a group of
armed men stormed a feder-
ally owned building, part of
a wildlife reserve, in southern
Oregon. The men have been
holed up in the building, de-
manding that the government
give them what they want. The
story is complicated, with sev-
eral important people, con-
flicting goals, a large timeline,
and confusing motives.
Lets start with the motives
of the group, which basical-
ly wants two things. The first
is for the federal government
to relinquish the land that the
wildlife reserve lies on. The
second is to give easier sen-
tences to two ranchers that the
government is currently pros-
ecuting.
Calling their ownership of
the land, unconstitutional,
they want the federal govern-
ment to give the reserve back
to ranchers of the area. To
understand their motives for
their backing of the two cer-
tain ranchers being prosecut-
ed, we must first understand
who is leading the group in-
side the building.
His name is Ammon Bun-
dy, the son of a Nevada cattle
rancher, Cliven Bundy. Cliven
Bundy recently made news
for a standoff with the feds in
not have a cellphone. Numer-
ous shopkeepers asked him to
leave their stores after refusing,
claiming they did understand
what he was speaking about,
and that he was stumbling; ob-
viously drunk and incoherent.
The woman, whose name
has yet to be released, suffered
cuts to her arms, face and legs,
and was subsequently taken to
a hospital after struggling with
police forces. One source says
she was combative, and bit an
officer trying to put her into
the ambulance.
While it will take seven to ten
days to analyze tests for rape,
her wounds were consistent
with a sexual attack. Accord-
ing to officials, she had been
separated from her father for
most of her life, raised by an
adoptive family out West,
and had recently been in con-
tact with her father. Neighbors
claim that he was a well-known
drunk, and irresponsible with

David Bowie, the iconic sym-
bol of everything outlandish,
the profoundly talented mu-
sician who had the ability to
marry every aspect of fashion
with music, died on Sunday,
January 10 after battling can-
cer for 18 months. To say his
existence influenced many is
quite the understatement; his
legacy and legendary imprint
on this world will live on for-
ever.
Growing up in my house-
hold, David Bowie was a con-
stant. Among a lot of other
music that we listened to, Id
say Bowie was played the most.
Whether he was Ziggy Star-
dust or the Thin White Duke,
my dad seemed to always have
one of Bowies albums playing
in the background. I always
enjoyed listening to his music
and so did my brother and sis-
ter. But, I remember the first
time I actually saw him per-
form and saw what he actually
looked like in his movie Ziggy
Stardust and the Spiders from
Mars. To actually see him was
such a shock; he was a weirdo
with crazy makeup, bright or-
ange hair, the tallest platform
shoes, and the tightest and
brightest clothing. But, a weir-
do that was the absolute epito-

The Revenant New Year, New Television

A Visceral Tale of Survival

One of the most talked about
movies in the box office right
now is The Revenant. Direct-
ed by highly regarded direc-
tor Alejandro G. Irritu, and
starring Leonardo DiCaprio,
this film, based on a true story,
is about a man, nearly mauled
to death by a bear, on the hunt
for the man who murdered his
son. It takes place in the very
early 1800s in a hellishly cold
section of America. The pro-
tagonist, named Hugh Glass, is
portrayed by DiCaprio.
DiCaprio is known for his
many roles in blockbuster
movies, including Titanic, Ro-
meo and Juliet, The Aviator,
The Departed, Inception, and
The Wolf of Wall Street. For
his role in The Revenant, he
went through hell. He grew
out his beard, which, accord-
ing to rumor, became infest-
ed with fleas, studied several
Native American languages,
immersed himself in freezing
water every day, and ate raw
buffalo liver. It is often brought
up that, despite being the role
in a number of critically ac-
claimed movies, he has never
won an Oscar. Maybe The Rev-
enant will be enough to change
the Academys minds.
DiCaprio wasnt the only
one who had to endure less-
than-ideal preparation and
conditions. The production of
the movie was characterized
by crew members quitting, ab-
solute non-cooperation of the
weather, going grossly over
budget, and more. Director
Alejandro G. Irritu takes full
responsibility for many of the
crazy happenings on set.
Irritu is known for being
committed to having the ab-
solute utmost level of realism
in his movies. He believes that
people can tell the difference,
citing an example of an ava-
lanche happening in the movie.
He believes that the difference
between a real shot being filmed
versus CGI is like the difference
between organic and GM food.
In an interview Irritu had
with The Guardian he stated
that, We have lost the taste for
the real. Many of his movies
are about the human experi-
ence, for example his 2004 film,
Amores Perros, which shed
light on the brutal underground
dogfighting scene of Mexico
City.
The Union Tribune declared
that The Revenant is a movie
that isnt watched, but rather
survived. If the past works of
DiCaprio and Irritu are any
indication, then this will surely
be one worth seeing.

tral Library in downtown San
Diego opened a new gallery
exhibition on December 19,
2015 and will be running un-
til February 28, 2016.
The exhibit, titled Signif-
icant Others is a collabora-
tion by eight San Diego artists

2016 will not be yet another
