Jenny Donahue is a 37 year old ICU nurse employed with the University of Kansas
Medical Center Health System, which has facilities located throughout the Kansas City,
Missouri metropolitan area. Jenny and her 13 year old son currently reside in a mixed-
use condominium style home placed above an occupied Law Office located in Olathe,
Kansas. In her spare time, Jenny enjoys saving momentous events and occasions about
her and her sons lives by creating scrapbooks. Jenny is also an avid runner, often
participating in local competitive running events for which she generally receives a
medal.
Jenny describes her design preference as Art Nouveau and would like the design
to include elements expressive of her Hispanic heritage and culture. Reds, oranges and
yellows are her preferred color scheme, and she would like to keep the overall design
bright and energetic. Jenny has requested a custom designed built-in storage piece
that includes a display case to be included in her home office to store and display her
running medals, as well as ample space to work on crafts and store crafting supplies.

The design for the Donahue family will focus on creating an inviting
and relaxed atmosphere throughout the home while invoking
feelings of the familys Hispanic heritage and personal interests. An
analogous color scheme will help express their ethnic background
and create a sense of rhythm by applying variations of reds,
oranges and yellows hues to different surfaces and materials.
Modern furniture featuring long, sinuous organic lines combined
with neutral-colored accents will reflect the familys preference for
the Art Nouveau style, and a custom designed display case will
showcase their hobbies and achievements. The use of smooth
textured fabrics throughout the home will help create an overall
sense of welcoming comfort, unity and variety.
Concept Statement
To create the color palette for the design, I created swatches from the four
most basic and predominant colors from the painting. I adjusted each color
differently in Photoshop by adjusting the properties to create six new
colors. Saturation and color balance were the primary tools I utilized to start
Color Palette each color, then I adjusted the vibrancy to mute the intensity of the colors.

Like meeting someone for the first time after hearing about them through
conversations, using the schematic plans helped put an idea into action, similar to
putting a name with a face. The schematic plans allowed the elements to be placed
and viewed in a proportional scale, so factors such as spatial relationships and traffic
considerations could be reviewed and revised.
Justification
I think the most important thing I have learned in this course is the ability to accept
criticism. I understand the critiques we received were to help improve our skills and
develop critical thought processes in regards to Interior Design, but I applied it to a
virtual scenario in which the critiques were the clients feedback regarding the design
concept. Art in any form is subjective, but because it is so personal, it is difficult to
receive criticism to something one has created. However, criticism and feedback are
necessary in order for the clients ideas to develop into the design they desire.
Another (difficult) lesson I learned in this course is you may not always like the design
preference of the client, but you are designing for the CLIENT (not yourself). I am not
particularly fond of the Art Nouveau style, so I struggled a bit with developing the
design concept for the client I was assigned. But I learned to keep an open mind and
focus on the clients ideas and requirements, and not my own personal preferences.
Finally, I learned there are A LOT of furniture and finish selections available to Interior
Designers, no matter what the design style, and it takes quite a bit of preparation and
research to find just the right elements.
