he traditional, New Mexico-style look in home
building is fairly timeless with the heavy wood
beams, wood ceilings and wood trim.

But theres a definite move to incorporate more mod-
ern accents and touches through the clever use of metal,
said Mark Knutson, who owns the Tijeras-based Kason
Group with his wife Sara Cummings. You can combine
it, said Knutson, who is trained both architecturally and
artistically. You take steel with rammed earth and youre
talking poetry, and put a patina on that and it can be really
phenomenal. I like the minimalist look and the industri-
alist look, as well. You can also go with the idiosyncratic
look. And with the patinas, you can complement the rustic
look. The Kason Group specializes in creating metal work
for both residential and commercial projects, as well as
commissioned art sculptures for private gardens or public
spaces. Were pushing the edge of the confluence, the
bringing together of the look of steel within the context
of contemporary or mid-style, Knutson said. They have
a certain look that they want and we get them there. It is
changing the way architecture is going about things.
Using that metal innovatively -- particularly when it
comes to art -- to speak volumes is the crux of the busi-
ness. A good piece should be accessible on all levels,
Knutson said. You get to styleogue with a piece. You look
at a piece and you ask it a question and it answers and it
throws back a question. Its called a hermeneutics dialogue.

ly, some of it is high-end, but theres also market that also
fits most pocketbooks as well as styles, he said. As a com-

softness of stucco or rammed earth with the hardness of

We had to do four different radiuses and
so we had to have it rolled out of state to
a pre-calculated radius. The railings that
were on there, we got them out of Texas.
Most of our work is all collaboration. We
have our director of design work in collab-
oration with architects and have worked
with them on the motif and how to do the
weaving. Another thing is that we actually
did mockups and they took a look at it and
went from there. It was a project that was
well worth the effort, delivering func-
tionality while creating a standalone and
unmatched piece of art. Our goal was to
build a grand staircase built entirely out of
structural steel to appear as free-floating
and seamless as possible, the companys
website said.

ture is no easy task and takes a pain-
staking exactness that requires constant
monitoring. A lot of that work, its a lot
of attention to detail, Knutson said. You
just have to be finely aware of every move
because it can go wrong on you quickly. In
the end we wanted to have something that
was as seamless as possible. It just flows.

lost. The couple moved here in 1995 from
the Midwest after their schooling and at
first it was something of struggle. New
Mexico can be a pretty hard place to make

an architect three years prior. I just loved it
here. The big push for art in architecture is
in Chicago, New York and Los Angeles, but
we just decided we wanted to focus on the
quality of life. Theyre fantastic place to be,
but its not here.
Finding a balance between price and
quality was the difficult part, but they
always put quality of work first. Our
clients want quality, he said. Pricing is
important, but the focus is on quality, but
when you first open up shop, the focus also
has to be on budgetary. At first, we lost our
pants. We didnt want to do production or
just schlock work and just push it out of the
shop. So most of the time, youre working
for, well not for money. But keeping the
eyes looking forward and having a good
team helped. If you keep your focus on
where you want it to be youll get there,
Knutson said. It just took awhile.
