RECOMMENDATIONS:
MB 229.31, Chrysler MS-11106
Compared with 229.1/229.3/229.5: lower sulphur, phosphorous and ash-

forming content, better compatibility with DPF

Compared with 229.1/229.3: more environmentally friendly, increased potential

fuel savings

229.52 backwards compatible with 229.51, backwards compatible with

229.31: in each case the requirements are more stringent compared with older

specifications 229.1/229.3/229.5

229.52/229.51./229.31 are therefore not backwards compatible with

229.5/229.3/229.1

229.52: currently has the most stringent requirements

The engines are installed in vehicles including the current ML and GL models, as

well as in R, S and G class vehicles.

Background information: 1111144-700 1 x 1000 L IBC
Specifically for diesel engines with a DPF, there is a danger that fuel may get into the engine
oil when the DPF is automatically regenerated within the vehicle. As a result of the differing
boiling points of biodiesel (approx. 101C) and conventional diesel (approx. 55C), the risk SPECIFICATIONS
that fuel will gradually accumulate in the oil is greater because fuel residues within the oil are API SN, ACEA C3
not able to fully evaporate during the course of short journeys as the necessary temperatures
are not reached for long enough for this to take place.
APPROVALS:
According to EU stipulations (Biofuels Directive), the proportion of biofuels should be gradually
increased and the use of mineral (conventional) fuels should be reduced. These stipulations MB-229.52,
are in place in order to protect the environment and to reduce the greenhouse gases emitted MB- 229.51
into the atmosphere. Similar directives to increase the quota of biofuels also exist in many
other countries, such as the USA, China and Brazil. RECOMMENDATIONS:
MB 229.31, Chrysler MS-11106
) Additional information on the Daimler Fuel Economy Tests:
Daimler carries out various tests relating to fuel economy. These tests include a 24 hour
test with a 2L Mercedes-Benz M111 E20 petrol engine in order to establish the potential
fuel savings resulting from an oil compared with the RL 252 reference oil. In order to avoid
analysis errors, the oil is changed during the test run in order to maintain identical conditions.
In addition to this test, which adheres to CEC-L-54-96 methods, Daimler also carries out
similar tests with other engines. The engines used are test engines from the OM 651,
OM 642 series, which are run with the RL002 reference oil as a point of comparison. The
result is always given as % fuel savings. The results should be within the 1%-2.2% range.

The required fuel saving for the MB 229.52 approval is achieved by the oil as a result of
supplementing it with special innovative additives, which were not yet in use for specification
229.51. RAVENOL VMS SAE 5W-30 therefore also contains an additional molybdenum
friction modifier (molybdenum booster) and organic friction modifiers (OFMs) in addition to
an exceptionally good quality VI enhancer with high shear stability. Friction within the engine
is therefore also reduced to an even greater degree at high temperatures, meaning that
fuel consumption is reduced.
