markers, physical examples of teacher and student artwork.
II. VOCABULARY:
Fine tip, Broad side, Horizontal lines, Vertical lines, Perpendicular lines,
Rectangle, Primary colors, Color scheme, Simplistic Style, Non-
representational Art
Teacher will introduce the key vocabulary while building on students prior
knowledge of the Elements of Art and Principles of Design.

III. BUILDING BACKGROUND
1. Students will review the principles of design and the elements of art with the
teacher. (these are always boldly posted in the classroom in more than one
place.)
2. Teacher will use a slideshow of artist Piet Mondrian and incorporate the key
vocabulary into the class discussion.
3. Teacher will use the key vocabulary while building on prior knowledge of the
principles of design.
IV. PRESENTATION
1. Teacher will show slideshow and facilitate a class discussion.
2. Introduce Piet Mondrians art work along with furniture designs and
household items that are inspired by his art.
3. Introduce the vocabulary of non-representational vs. abstract. (Show
physical examples of each.)
4. Discuss how the artist creates his simplistic, non-representational designs
with limited use of line and color.
