5. Peter is instructed to investigate the relative abundance of stomata on the upper and lower
epidermis of a leaf of Coleus (a terrestrial dicotyledonous plant) without using a microscope. He
suggested comparing the rates of water loss from the two surfaces of the leaf.

6. A native plant, dodder, having no leaves or roots, coils around other plants and obtains essential

(b) The following photomicrograph is a cross section made at the point of contact between the
two plants.

10. In the history of discovery of the circulatory system, there were many erroneous views from
various scholars.

(i) Which of these two blood vessels is an artery? Give an evidence to support your
answer. (2 marks)

(ii) In 2nd century AD, the Greek physician Galen believed that the heart did not pump
blood around, and the blood moved by the pulsation of the arteries themselves.
Based on the present biological knowledge, account for the pulsation of arteries.

(b) William Harvey (1578 1657), an English physician, was the first known to describe
completely and in detail the circulatory system. At the time of Harveys publication, Galen
had been an influential medical authority for several centuries. Galen believed that blood
passed between the ventricles by means of invisible pores in the septum. According to
Galens views, the venous system was quite separate from the arterial system, except when
they came in contact through the unseen pores. Arabic scholar Ibn al-Nafis had disputed
aspects of Galens views. He stated that blood moved from the heart to the lungs, where it
mixed with air, and then back to the heart, from which it spread to the rest of the body.

(i) Ibn al-Nafis provided a model that implies a form of pulmonary circulation. Based on
the present biological knowledge, outline the pathway of the pulmonary circulation,
including the chambers of the heart involved. (3 marks)

(ii) Harvey had theorized the existence of capillaries; however, he was never capable of
understanding how blood passed from the arterioles into the venules. Harveys
discoveries inevitably came into conflict with Galen's teachings and his publication
incited considerable controversy within the medical community. Some doctors
affirmed they would rather go wrong with Galen than proclaim the truth with Harvey.
