CONGRESS OF SOUTH AFRICAN TRADE UNIONS

Cosatu Press statement

05 October 2017

Cosatu meeting with Rugby bosses ends in deadlock in parliament

Protest that will disrupt rugby game on Saturday to go ahead, as it tries to show the world
how unfair South African rugby is.

Cosatu today met with Minister of Sport, DSTV Supper Sport and SARU to discuss the all
black game being live on TV. The demand from Cosatu for all people to see the game live was
not supported by SARU and DSTV. The minister however encouraged all parties to go back to
their principles to get revised mandates, so progress may be possible in securing the game for
all South Africans.

Cosatu rejected the response from SARU and DSTV that they could not show the match to all
South Africans. What was clear was that DSTV and SARU had done a cosy deal that made a
few people very rich and excluded the majority of people. Government should never have
allowed SARU and DSTV to do the kind of deal that excludes the majority of South Africans.
It is unacceptable that only 20% of SA people can watch the game live on DSTV.

The fact that the government is supporting SA Rugby with R30 billion for the world cup bid
and they give nothing to the SA public in return is unacceptable. The meeting between the
parties will reconvene at 12h30 pm on Friday and a press conference will be held at Parliament
at 14 00 hours in the media centre.

Cosatu protest at the game for live rugby for all South Africans will go ahead on Saturday if no
agreement is reached, as the greed of SARU and DSTV is more influential on government than
the interest of all oaths African
