Nature of Counseling

1. Counseling involves two people in interaction. It includes direct communication

of talking and listening as well as the nonverbal features by which meaning is
transmitted from one person to another. The interaction is highly confidential
since the counselee discuss about themselves, and needs privacy or should
not be observed by others.
2. The mode of interaction is usually limited to the verbal realm. The counselor
and the counselee talk with one another. This is where the counselee will have
a chance to talk about themselves and open their experiences. They describe
how they respond to the events in their life. On the other hand, the counselor
listens and responds in which she/he encourage the counselee to provoke
further responses.
3. The interaction is relatively prolonged since alteration of behaviour takes time.
It lasts because counseling is not like the other usual conversation with friend
that only gives temporary relief. Counselling has its goal to change the
counselees behaviour that needs time.
4. The purpose of the relationship is change in the behaviour of the counselee.
The counselor is aiming at provision assistance that will eventually lead to a
change behaviour or attitude (for good) thats why counselling is inseparable
from guidance.

Purposes of Counseling

The main purpose of counseling is to assist the individual in self-direction and self-
realization. It is also a process of assisting the individual to solve his own problem
(Dunsmoor and Miller, 1955), the purposes of counseling are:

1. To give the student information on matters important to his adjustment and

growth
2. To get information about the student which will be help to him in solving his
problems
 3. To establish a feeling of mutual understanding between pupil and a teacher
4. To help the pupil work out a plan for solving his difficulties
5. To help the pupil know himself better, his interests, abilities, aptitudes and
available opportunities
6. To encourage special talents and develop right attitude
7. To inspire successful endeavour toward the attainment or realization of
objectives
8. To assist the pupil in planning for his educational and vocational choices
