Waveguide Connection
Caution
When not connected to the external waveguide
system or a terminated load, waveguide flanges
should be covered with a protective cap or tape
that does not leave glue residue when removed.
Xicom recommends the use of Kapton tape, 3M
Brand, #92, Xicom P/N 602-0001-001. Remove
tape or cap prior to final installation. Failure to
comply could result in contamination to the internal
waveguide system or TWT and equipment
damage.
Vorsicht

Unpacking and Installation
Note
The waveguide that is connected to the HPAs
should have a good match of 1.5:1 or better for
optimal performance. Waveguide connected to tri-
band HPAs (C, X, Ku) and dual-band HPAs (C,
Ku) in particular need to have this match. These
HPAs do not contain isolators due to their
bandwidths. Also, the in-band harmonics of
excessive power reflected into the HPA can cause
damage to the TWT. It is recommended that a
transition is made to rectangular waveguide and an
isolator used to assure a good match to the HPA
and to absorb reflected powers at the harmonic
frequencies. The typical output VSWR of isolators
when included in the HPA is 1.3:1.
Note
If the connecting waveguide is to be pressurized at
greater than 5 PSI, a waveguide window must be
installed at the output flange of the amplifier. Use a
conductive type gasket to preclude radiation
leakage.

Operation
Overview
The Xicom Digital M&C system, which is incorporated into all XTRT rack mount
amplifiers with touch-screen, provides a common interface for the entire line of
Microwave Tubes. The M&C can be accessed from the front panel or via a serial
interface. This Chapter discusses the user interface and the menu system for the touch-
screen interface.
HPACNTRL
HPACNTRL is a Windows Operating System-based program that allows remote control of
the XTRT rack mount amplifier. It allows control over a standard serial port as well as
Ethernet. HPACNTRL is available from Xicom Technology part number 809-0032-001 and
can be downloaded from the Xicom FTP site by calling customer service @ 408-213-
3109.
The communication protocols for the remote control serial interfaces are described in
the Chapter titled Amplifier Communication and Protocol.
The front panel of the 3RU amplifier is shown in Figure 1 describing the location of the
various control functions.

LCD Adjust
Touch-screen knob
The adjust knob is used for adjusting attenuation, power, etc. as well as scrolling through
various menu items. All other controls and indications are accessed via the touch-screen
interface on the LCD display. The RF sample is a coupled interface of the actual RF being
transmitted. The coupling factors for this interface can be found in the set-up menu described in
the following section. Upon initial turn-on, a flash screen will be displayed momentarily as
shown in Figure 2. This screen time will vary from approximately 2 seconds to 8 seconds
depending on whether an Ethernet connection is found.

The following illustrations explain the status and use of the Main Menu Bar.
Starting I Firmware revision 1.11 a software timer was implemented in addition to the
hardware (h/w) filament time delay. This is an additional safety mechanism to assure
the filament has reached its proper operating temperature. The software timer will
count down in minutes and seconds after the hardware timer has elapsed.
If there is a power failure, high voltage will be OFF for a period of time proportional to
the prime power off-time. At the end of the recovery period, if high voltage is ON when
the prime power interruption occurs, the high voltage is automatically restored.

Operation
High voltage can be selected ON during filament time delay; this is termed Pending
High Voltage ON. In this mode, high voltage will be applied automatically at the end of
the filament time delay period. The amplifier will beep twice when the high voltage is
applied to the TWT.
Standby Mode
In this mode, there are no faults and the TWT is ready for high voltage to be applied.

Operation
Note: When the High Voltage ON switch is turned ON, high voltage will be applied to the TWT any time
the FTD cycle is completed and there are no faults present. Interruptions of prime power for any reason
will force the power supply into the FTD mode.
When High Voltage is ON (applied to the TWT), RF input signals are amplified. If high
voltage is selected (pending high voltage), before the FTD cycle is complete, high voltage
will remain OFF until the FTD cycle is complete, but will turn ON automatically
thereafter.

RF Inhibit Mode
In most cases, Xicom XTRT series amplifiers have an internal pre-amplifier. RF is inhibited by
disabling this pre-amp. In cases where there is no pre-amp, the high voltage will be disabled for
RF inhibit. RF can be inhibited from a number of sources, internal and external to the amplifier.
RF Enable (converse to inhibit) is indicated by a green color of the RF button. RF inhibit via
software control will be indicated by amber color of this button. When RF is inhibited from
another source, this button will be gray in color. More details of the RF inhibit source are
available on the Amplifier Tab described in the next section of this Chapter. Sources of RF inhibit
are as follows:

Operation
Constant Power Mode
Constant Power Mode is an Amplifier function designed to maintain a constant RF output power
(at the RF output flange) adjusting the internal attenuator for changes in input drive and
Amplifier overall gain. Assuming the attenuator has enough dynamic range and the TWT is not
at maximum power, the RF output power will be continuously monitored and adjusted for any
changes. This function can be adjusted in a variety of states:
1. Configuring while in the High Voltage OFF state Target RF power at value is
adjusted as shown in Figure 19. Constant Power Mode can then be enabled.
When High Voltage is enabled, RF is in the enabled state and a proper RF signal
is applied the attenuator will adjust to achieve and maintain the RF output
power selected.
2. Configuring with High Voltage ON and RF drive applied Typically Constant
Power Mode will be initiated while in Transmit mode. In this mode the desired
RF output power has been achieved and the Constant power mode is used to
lock in the desired output power. When the desired output has been
achieved simply touch the Constant Power mode select and the mode will be
enabled. Should the desired output power need to be changed touch the
button as shown above and use the knob to change the desired target.
CAUTION - Maximum Constant power setting should not exceed amplifier rated power out
minus 0.5 db. Due to variations in output power across the frequency band it is possible to
cause overdrive mode if the constant power is set too close to saturation.
The amplifier will not allow constant power settings this close to saturated power out.

Operation
Note: Constant Power Suspended One of the following alarms may be displayed should the
amplifier not be able to achieve the desired RF power out.
1. Raise drive power This indication will be present if the attenuator has
reached 0 dB and the desired output power has not been achieved.
2. Reduce drive power This indication will be present if the attenuator has
reached its maximum value and the desired output power has not been
achieved.
3. Drive power drop-out This indication will be present if there is a sudden
reduction in drive power greater than 7 dB
Attenuator Adjust
Adjusting the attenuator while in FTD or Standby mode is typically used to reduce the
gain of the amplifier before initial Turn On. See initial turn on sequence discussed later
in this Chapter. The RF output power can adjusted with the attenuator button; however,
the Main Menu Bar is typically used to adjust the power when the amplifier is operating.

Operation
Fault Mode
The XTRT series amplifiers continuously monitor faults and alarms. The red boxes in the
lower left hand corner indicate the faults that are currently present.
Faults on Xicom XTRT series amplifiers can be separated into these categories:
Note: Power supply faults are generated by the high voltage power supply and cannot be over-ridden.
These faults are specifically designed to protect the TWT from damage.
Lowline Fault When the power supply detects a low input line voltage. This is usually
the case of a broken power factor correction circuit; however, the input AC line voltage
should be checked to verify proper voltage to the amplifier. This is a self-clearing fault
such that momentary brown-outs will not latch the amplifier in a non-operational mode.
Helix Current Fault (latched) When the power supply detects excessive helix current
on the TWT, it turns off the high voltage and then tries to turn it back on. If the fault
persists for three OFF/ON cycles, the fault circuit latches and the high voltage power
supply stops automatically recycling.

to the U.S. Export Administration Regulations (EAR). Transfer of data herein by any means to a Foreign Person,
whether in the U.S. or abroad, may require an export license from the U.S. Department of Commerce.
Operation
High Voltage Overvoltage When the high voltage is being applied to the TWT an
overshoot of significant duration has occurred.
High Voltage Under-voltage When the high voltage is being applied to the TWT the
proper voltage is not achieved.
TWT Over-temperature During operation the TWT achieves a temperature unsafe for
continued operation. The over-temperature fault will turn off high voltage which will
consequentially allow the TWT to cool. When the TWT has cooled to a safe operating
temperature the high voltage will be restored.
Heater Fault - Some Xicom amplifiers have a separate heater (filament) power supply.
This separate PCB has an addition output termed heater fault. This is an indication the
heater current is too low and could be several factors including broken power supply,
loose connection to the TWT or an actual open filament in the TWT itself.
Note: An over-temperature fault should be cause for immediate maintenance action as it may indicate
fan failure or blocked air passage(s).
RF related faults are generated in the RF chain. These faults are designed to protect the TWT and the
rest of the RF chain from damage.
VSWR Fault Occurs when the amplifier senses excessive reflected RF. Check
waveguide tightness and input VSWR of the RF load on the amplifier.
W/G Arc Fault When an internal detector senses an arc in the waveguide. This fault
will inhibit the RF then turn off the high voltage to the TWT. In most cases this fault will
require service as waveguide arcs will usually tend to deposit carbon traces on the
internal surfaces of the waveguide.
WARNING - Resetting these faults excessively could cause damage to the TWT.
Up-converter Fault This fault occurs when an integrated up-converter loses lock
signal. This is usually an indication of a loss of the reference oscillator signal. Some
Xicom XTRT series amplifiers have integrated 10 MHz oscillators while others are
configured to use an external source. If an external oscillator is required check integrity
of the signal at the input of the amplifier.
This fault is only present in amplifiers with integrated up-converters.
Interlock faults are generated by a contact closure (or lack thereof) in internal or external circuitry.
External Interlock Fault Indicates the external interlock pins 11-13 connection on the
auxiliary interface connector on the rear panel is open.

Operation
Software selectable faults are generated by setting a fault or alarm level in the set-up menu as
described in the section of this Chapter entitled SETUP.
Maximum Power Alarm/Fault Indicates the RF power out has exceeded the threshold
of the level selected.
Minimum Power Alarm/Fault Indicates the RF power out has fallen below the
threshold of the level selected.
Maximum Reverse Power Alarm/Fault - Indicates the reflected RF power has exceeded
the threshold of the level selected.

Operation
DHCP vs Static IP Xicom will factory-set any single thread amplifiers for DHCP
enabling connection to a customers network and allowing the router to assign an
available address. Amplifiers configured for M&C operation will typically require IP
addresses. In Xicom redundant systems, the amplifiers must communicate with each
other. In some cases this is facilitated using a Xicom supplied Ethernet hub.
Note: When configuring the amplifiers for system operation, it is important to leave the
Ethernet configured for fixed IP unless connecting to a DHCP server.
IP address, Net-mask, and Gateway This is used for selecting the IP address
for use with the amplifier. Touch button and enter address with numeric
keypad. When using DHCP the net-mask and gateway are automatically
assigned and dont require operator input.

For system operation each amplifier has connection and controls for two waveguide
switches and an Ethernet port that supports multiple connections. The system
configurations generally include connections to the waveguide switches and a
connection to an Ethernet hub. Conceptually the amplifiers are connected as required
to the switches and then connected to the Hub in order to exchange status and controls.

Operation
INITIAL SETUP
There are several important requirements for setting up XTRT series amplifiers for
system configuration.
1. The system type i.e. one for one redundant, VPC etc. must be selected properly
in the set-up menu of the amplifier.
2. The position select jumper plug must be installed on the proper W/G switch
connector (more about this in the Chapter titled Operation, System XTRT and
XTST series Amplifiers).
3. The Ethernet connection between the amplifiers must be present and functional
(more about this in the Chapter titled Operation, System XTRT and XTST series
Amplifiers).
Special Note: The redundant systems do not rely on this communication for
redundant operation. The Summary Faults are routed between the two amplifiers via
the waveguide switch cable and the redundancy function takes place regardless of
the Ethernet interface.

Auto Heater Standby
The purpose of the heater standby is to extend the life of the tube when the high voltage is off.
The temperature of the cathode is the primary determinate of the tube life. The emission of
electrons from the surface of a cathode has a cooling effect on the cathode surface. Therefore,
when high voltage is off the cathode surface temperature increases shortening the life of the
tube. This is a special concern when the amplifier is in standby mode for extended periods of
time, that is, when it is the standby unit.

Operation
Heater Standby reduces the heater voltage when the high voltage is off. The temperature of the
cathode is reduced to a temperature slightly below the normal operating temperature. When
high voltage is turned on, it overrides the heater standby command and returns the heater
voltage to its normal setting. When the high voltage is turned off again the heater voltage is
reduced.
When the amplifier has been online and then placed in the heater standby mode, there is no
time delay when the high voltage is turned on.

Test Summary Fault
Touching this button will create a momentary summary fault condition in which the form C
relay contacts on the auxiliary interface connector on the rear panel of the amplifier will change
position. This is generally used to test redundant operations in both Xicom system and other
customer designed configurations.
Note: This does not impede in any way the RF output of the amplifier; however, in redundant
configurations (when in automatic mode) the waveguide switch will flip causing a momentary
interruption in transmission.

Operation
Operating Configurations
There are two operating configurations: LOCAL and REMOTE. In LOCAL, all operations
are controlled from the TWTA Front Panel. The controls and indicators were shown and
summarized at the beginning of this Chapter. In REMOTE, the front panel high voltage
and setup functions are inhibited.
Note: Familiarity with the XTRT touch menu system is required for LOCAL operation. Familiarity with the
Xicom command set is required for REMOTE operation.
Operating Modes
The operating modes of the TWTA are described in the following sections. These are the
amplifier operating modes:
If there is a power failure, high voltage will be OFF for a period of time proportional to
the prime power off-time. At the end of the recovery period, if high voltage is ON when
the prime power interruption occurs, the high voltage is automatically restored.
High voltage can be selected ON during filament time delay this is termed Pending High
Voltage ON in this mode; high voltage will be applied automatically at the end of the
filament time delay period. The amplifier will beep twice when the high voltage is
applied to the TWT.

to the U.S. Export Administration Regulations (EAR). Transfer of data herein by any means to a Foreign Person,
whether in the U.S. or abroad, may require an export license from the U.S. Department of Commerce.
Operation
Standby
In this mode, there are no faults and the TWT is ready for high voltage to be applied.
Heater Standby
The purpose of the heater standby is to extend the life of the tube when the high
voltage is off.
The temperature of the cathode is the primary determinate of the tube life. The
emission of electrons from the surface of a cathode has a cooling effect on the cathode
surface. Therefore, when high voltage is off the cathode surface temperature increases
shortening the life of the tube. This is a special concern when the amplifier is in standby
mode for extended periods of time, that is, when it is the standby unit.
Heater Standby reduces the heater voltage when the high voltage is off. The
temperature of the cathode is reduced to a temperature slightly below the normal
operating temperature. When high voltage is turned on, it overrides the heater standby
command and returns the heater voltage to its normal setting. When the high voltage is
turned off again the heater voltage is reduced.
When the amplifier has been online and then placed in the heater standby mode, there
is no time delay when the high voltage is turned on.
Note: XTRT series amplifiers always leave the factory with the heater standby mode enabled. In
order to override this factory setting the remote command must be used. See Protocol XTRT Rack
TWTA with LCD Chapter 5 for details.

to the U.S. Export Administration Regulations (EAR). Transfer of data herein by any means to a Foreign Person,

Operation
High Voltage ON
When High Voltage ON is selected, an internal circuit is latched on. This enables High
Voltage ON.
Note: When the High Voltage ON switch is turned on, high voltage will be applied to the TWT any time
the FTD cycle is completed and there are no faults present. Interruptions of prime power for any reason
will force the power supply into the FTD mode.
Note: When high voltage is on (applied to the TWT), RF input signals are amplified. If high voltage is
selected (pending high voltage) before the FTD cycle is complete, high voltage will remain OFF until the
FTD cycle is complete, but will turn on automatically thereafter
RF Inhibit
In most cases, Xicom XTRT series amplifiers have an internal pre-amplifier (pre-amp). RF
is inhibited by disabling this pre-amp. In cases where there is no pre-amp, the high
voltage will be disabled for RF inhibit. RF can be inhibited from a number of sources
internal and external to the amplifier. RF Enable (converse to inhibit) is indicated by a
green color of the RF button on the Main Menu Bar described earlier in this Chapter. RF
inhibit via software control is indicated by amber color of this button. When RF is
inhibited from another source, the button will be gray in color. More details on the RF
inhibit source are available on the Amplifier Tab described earlier in this Chapter.
Sources of the RF inhibit are listed below.

Operation
Fault
Faults on Xicom XTRT series amplifiers can be separated into the following categories:
High Voltage Overvoltage When the high voltage is being applied to the TWT an
overshoot of significant duration has occurred.
High Voltage Undervoltage When the high voltage is being applied to the TWT the
proper voltage is not achieved.
TWT Over-temperature During operation the TWT achieves a temperature unsafe for
continued operation. The over-temperature fault will turn off high voltage which will
consequentially allow the TWT to cool. When the TWT has cooled to a safe operating
temperature the high voltage will be restored.
Heater Fault Some Xicom amplifiers have a separate heater (filament) power supply.
This separate PCB has an addition output termed heater fault. This is an indication the
heater current is too low and could be several factors including broken power supply,
loose connection to the TWT or an actual open filament in the TWT itself.
Note: An over-temperature fault should be cause for immediate maintenance action as it is a possible
indication of a fan failure or blocked air passage(s).

to the U.S. Export Administration Regulations (EAR). Transfer of data herein by any means to a Foreign Person,
whether in the U.S. or abroad, may require an export license from the U.S. Department of Commerce.
Operation
Note: RF related faults are generated in the RF chain. These faults are designed to protect the TWT and
the rest of the RF chain from damage.
VSWR Fault When the amplifier senses a mismatch on the RF output in excess of a 2:1
VSWR, check waveguide tightness and input VSWR of the RF load on the amplifier.
W/G Arc Fault When an internal detector senses an arc in the waveguide. This fault
will inhibit the RF, and then turn off the high voltage to the TWT. In most cases this fault
will require service as waveguide arcs will usually tend to deposit carbon traces on the
internal surfaces of the waveguide.
WARNING- Resetting these faults excessively could cause damage to the TWT.
Overdrive Fault When the amplifier senses a RF overdrive condition. This fault is only
present in amplifiers with peak power TWTs.
Upconverter Fault This fault occurs when an integrated up-converter has lost lock
signal. This is usually an indication of a loss of the reference oscillator signal. Some
Xicom XTRT series amplifiers have integrated 10 MHz oscillators while others are
configured to use an external source. If an external oscillator is required, check integrity
of the signal at the input of the amplifier. This fault is only present in amplifiers with
integrated up-converters.
Interlock faults are generated by a contact closure (or lack thereof) in internal or external circuitry.
External Interlock Fault Indicates the external interlock pins 11-13 connection on the
auxiliary interface connector on the rear panel is open.
See Amplifier Tab (page 17) for information about clearing alarms and faults.

Operation
CAUTION - Operators and Service Personnel must observe the instructions in the following paragraphs.
Failure to comply may cause permanent damage to the amplifier and void the warranty.
Pre-power Check
1. Prime power is within the specified limits of the amplifier.
2. The RF output is terminated with a load capable of dissipating rated RF output
power and the load has a maximum VSWR of 1.3:1.
3. The RF drive signal is within the frequency range of the amplifier and +5dBm or
less with the amplifier set for minimum gain (attenuation at max approx. 30 dB).
CAUTION - Operate the amplifier within the power limit specification. Exceeding the input power will
cause a Helix Current Fault. Failure to comply may permanently damage the TWT.
Turn-on Sequence
Set the AC Power switch to ON.
1. Within two minutes after setting AC power ON, touch the HV button and make sure
the high voltage has been selected OFF.
2. In the Amplifier Tab described earlier in this Chapter, select the attenuator tab
and, using the adjust knob, adjust the attenuation to maximum.
3. Connect an RF monitor to the output load assembly.
4. Connect an RF test generator or the operational RF drive source to the RF Input on
the Rear Panel.
5. With the attenuation set to the maximum level, set the RF drive source for a
maximum output of +5 dBm.
6. Wait until Filament Time Delay cycle is complete (approximately three minutes). The
Standby mode should be enabled, turn the RF drive OFF.
7. Touch the HV key on the Main Menu Tab and turn on the HV as described in the
previous section of this Chapter.
8. Turn on the RF drive signal. Slowly increase the RF drive to the TWT by touching the
Green HV on indicator on the Main Menu Tab and rotating the adjust knob clock
wise. Monitor the RF output power.
9. Touch the HV button on the Main Menu Tab and follow the high voltage turn-off
sequence.

If you send a message using the printable protocol, devices will respond
using the printable protocol. If you send a message using non-printable
protocol, devices will repsond using the non-printable protocol. There are
no DIP switches to set, and there is no software to configure. Xicom
devices always respond in kind:
Printable and non-printable protocols differ only in the characters
used for start, stop, and check bytes. Refer to Start Byte, End
Byte, & Check Byte.
The "printable" protocol uses printable start and stop characters;
check bytes are generated using a method that produces printable
ASCII characters.
The non-printable protocol uses non-printable start and stop
bytes; its check byte algorithm can yield non-printable characters.

Overview
The function of the BUC (Block Upconverter) is to convert the
baseband input from a modem at an IF (intermediate frequency) to
the system transmit frequency. The BUC accepts an intermediate
frequency, mixes it with a highly stable LO (local oscillator) and
passes it through a series of circuits that filter and amplify the signal
to produce an output in the desired transmission band. The LO
frequency is derived from the reference frequency that is provided
by the baseband system. The regference frequency is typically 10
or 50 MHz and is critical the the overall system stability and phase
noise. A typical phase noise requirement for a reference source is
shown in Figure 1. The phase noise of the modem input signal at
the IF frequency also affects the system performance and needs to
be 5 to 10 dB below IESS (Intelsat earth Station Standards) phase
noise profile for optimum performance.
Figure 1, Typical Block Diagram of a High Power Amplifier with Block Upconverter.
Note
If the modem being used does not have the IF
multiplexed with the reference, a dixplexer is available
from Xicom (Part Number: 545-0021-001) to combine
the two signals.
Note
Xicom offers SSPA/HPA Block Upconverter options
with an internal 10 MHz reference. For these models,
the Diplexer and 10 MHz crystal are mounted inside
the SSPA/HPA enclosure. The only required input is at
the Intermediate Frequency (IF).

In the event that the frequency drifts outside the acceptable range,
the unit must be either re-aligned by a Xicom certified maintenance
center or alternatively the modem L Band output must be adjusted
to correct the output frequency. Adjusting the L Band modem
frequency is the simplest method and is recommended. The drift
compensation scheme is summarized in Figure 4.

Ext Ref Present - This feature is available only if the HPA includes
an internal Phase Locked Oscillator (PLO), that is intended to
improve the phase noise, and/or shift the frequency of an optional
customer supplied reference (see Figure 5). This fault line senses
the presence of the required reference frequency at approximately
the proper power level. HPA function is disabled if the reference
frequency is not detected when this feature is enabled. This feature
can be disabled (turned off) if desired. If this feature is disabled,
and the external reference is not supplied, the internal PLO will
free-run and generate the necessary reference frequency for HPA
operation. See the factory default setting below.
