10th annual Lake Robin-
son Day of Celebration
this Sunday from 1-6 p.m.
This event gives people
an opportunity to come
together and celebrate the
Lake Robinson communi-
ty, which has a rich histo-
ry and is one of the major
growth points for the City
of Greer, said Tom Faulk-
ner, president of Friends
of Lake Robinson.
We want to celebrate
this unique community
as one that is sustainable,
loves the environment, be-
lieves in green principles,
and is economically di-
verse, he said.
Each year, the Greer
Commission of Public
Works (CPW) partners with
the Friends of Lake Robin-
son to spotlight the area,
which offers 27 miles of
shoreline.
Some of the exhibi-
tors have been with the
event for many years and
others weve added this
year, said Alison Rauch,
public information officer
for the CPW. Some of the
new exhibitors include the
Watershed Ecology Center,
Wildlife Geeks and Home
Depot.
Visitors will have op-
portunities to learn more
about the lake communi-
ty and enjoy a photo and
art exhibit at the J. Verne
Smith Park.

dergoes extensive infra-
structure repair, the Greer
Commission of Public
Works is making progress
on a number of projects.
Greer CPW is upgrading
and replacing some the
oldest water and sewer
lines in its system, getting
ahead of the citys eventu-
al downtown streetscape
project.
The work will hopefully,
minimize, to the extent
practicable, the possibil-
ity for any future repair
needs within the down-
town streets, according

ts not that Im terribly paranoid about
bugs. Would I friend them on social
media? Probably not.
Now, spiders, particularly walking un-
knowingly through a web which results
in me performing something akin to a St
Vitus dance, are a bit different. I know
what black widows and fiddlebacks look
like, but the ones I usually see around
the barn that give me the willies are
those giant black ones, waiting to feast
on the crickets at nightfall, as well as the
golden orb or writing spiders, spinning
their elaborate webs.
Ive yet to see Some Pigspelled out,
but oddly, I did just see #TaxReform.
All of this pales in comparison with
something I saw that was more horri-
fying than the Christmas decorations
already on display at Dollar General: a
massive scorpion. Im not talking about
those obsequious little brown ones that
seem to call mountainous and woodsy
places home, Im talking about one that
came out of our rose bed that I could
have easily fitted with a harness and
taken to obedience class at Pet Smart.
This scorpion reminded me of the ones
that you shudderingly see out West: at

Trick
or treat?
Q: Will there still be trick or
treating on Trade Street this

A: The downtown road
construction is impacting more
than just your daily commute.
Its also causing the Greer
Station Association to rethink
some annual events.
For the past several years,
downtown merchants have
opened their doors to trick
or treaters as part of a Trick
or Treat on Trade event. That
event, however, will be merged
with Halloween Hoopla due to
the ongoing water and sewer
line work in the area.
Halloween Hoopla will
continue as planned
at Greer City Park on
Oct. 29, coordinated by
The Church at Greer
Station.
With utility work beginning
relative to the streetscape rede-
velopment project downtown,
we are taking the opportunity
to take a step back to deter-
mine the most effective ways
to promote the community and
to drive sales to our downtown
businesses, Reno Deaton,
Executive Director of Greer
Development Corporation, told
the Greer Citizen recently.
Halloween Hoopla will con-
tinue as planned at Greer City
Park on Oct. 29, coordinated by
The Church at Greer Station.
The road work is expected to
last several more weeks, and
it is part of an infrastructure
project that will result in a new
downtown streetscape.
It is being done in conjunc-
tion with the Greer Community
Master plan, which maps out
local projects to be completed
in the next 10 years.

After four days of shaking out my
shoes each morning and inspecting
every inch of bed linen before going to
sleep at night, I managed to comfort
myself with the fact that Big Luther was
simply a one-off, a freak of nature that
perhaps had feasted on some Miracle
Gro.
And then like an idiot, I had to upload

Most Americans are repulsed by racism. Un-
fortunately, their feelings of repulsion are often
exploited for political gain.
Especially now, in a time of hyper-racializa-
tion, the rush to frame all issues in racial terms
often seems done to create political capital or
avenge a political setback. Claims of racism
have become a weapon to attack even benign
sentiments, including a persons preference for
a particular political candidate or party.
Recent online rantings by a Clemson Univer-
sity professor generated a backlash on and off
campus. His behavior offers a good example of
the senseless race-based hysteria taking place
nationally.
All trump (sic) supporters, nay, all Republi-
cans, are racist scum, read an August Facebook
post by the professor. All republicans? Yes.
Your complacency made this happen. Pick a
side: denounce your affiliation, or admit youre
a racist.
Another of his posts went to an even further
extreme by appearing to advocate violence: I
admire anyone who stands up against white su-
premacy, Violent or non-violent.
Generalizing roughly half the American pop-
ulation as racist simply because of their presi-
dential preference exhibits woefully unsophis-
ticated reasoning, especially for someone of a
university professors stature.
On his website, the professor who instructs
a course in something called human centered
computing says his research focuses on on-
line decisions such as Which app should I in-
stall? and Should I post this on Facebook or
not? His own poor decision-making is not only
ironic, but it raises questions about his value as
an instructor.
After an outcry from members of the Clem-
son community, the university issued a state-
ment condemning expressions condoning
or advocating violence or hatred. Was its re-
sponse adequate?
College campuses have long leaned toward
the liberal end of the spectrum, and thats be-

opinion; its supported by research and survey
results, including a recent UCLA survey of uni-

his wife of eight years,

A lifelong resident of
Greer, Smiley passed away
in 2008 after a battle with
prostate cancer.

Tapp remembers going

growing up, and he is
looking to replicate that

Gearline E. Geri daughter, Betsy M. Por-
Groves, 86, Greer, SC, for-
merly of St. Augustine,
died September 26, 2017
at Spartanburg Regional
Hospice Home. She was
born in St. Augustine and
resided here until 1994
when she moved to Greer,
SC. She was a former tour
guide at Potters Wax Mu-
seum for many years. She
was a member of New Cov-
enant church in Greer, SC.
Geri was a beloved mother
and was blessed to live to
be able to see five genera-
tions of family.
Funeral services were
held 2 p.m. Tuesday at the
chapel of St. Johns Family
Funeral Home. Interment
followed in Evergreen
Cemetery.
A visitation beginning at
1 p.m. preceded the ser-
vices.
She is survived by a
daughter, Melanie Call
and son in law Jeffery
Call, Greer, SC; son, Mi-
chael Dale Groves, Greer;
6 grandchildren and many

many great-great grand-
children.
She was preceded in
death by two children,
Robert VanLieu Sr., and

for one-time projects or
in-house incentives.
What Im going to pro-
pose as we move forward
to a final budget to pres-
ent to you for consider-
ation will be that we begin
to look at that number
that comes from the City
of Greer and essential-
ly bifurcate those dol-
lars that come as a result
of business activity and
those dollars that come
as a result of construc-
tion activity, Deaton said.
That business activity
number should be a pret-
ty reliable number for us
year over year, and those
are dollars that we would
use principally for our
recurring operational ex-
penses, he continued.

ber of First Presbyterian
by all that knew him. He
Surviving are one
parents, Harry Avery Park-
ter of Greer; one brother,
S.A. Boyd of Chester; five
grandchildren, W. Boyd
McKinney, Jr., Ansley
Porter Wright (Mike), M.
Celeste McKinney Bracey
(Mose), Keith Allen Por-
ter, Jr. (Katie) and Caro-
lyn E.F. McKinney and five
great-grandchildren.
She was also prede-
ceased by one son, War-
ren Boyd McKinney; one
brother, James Boyd and
one sister, Martha Boyd.
Funeral services will be
held at 11 a.m. Saturday,
October 7, 2017 at First
Presbyterian Church of
Greer, conducted by Rev.
Dr. Brandi Casto-Waters
and Dr. Steve Vance. Buri-
al will follow in the Moun-
tain View Cemetery.

ment will host the 13th
Annual Greer Cops for
Tots Golf Tournament on
Oct. 12 at the Greer Coun-
try Club, raising funds to
purchase Christmas gifts
for underprivileged chil-
dren.

able to provide presents
to another 300 children

Police, officers went to an
address on Forrester St.
in Greer in reference to
an assault. There, a com-
plainant said that Flores
had punched her, smacked
her and poked her with a
multi-purpose tool. She
said the subject also at-
tempted to light her hair
on fire and later put her
in a chokehold, restrict-
ing her airway. He then
took her cell phone and
destroyed it. Police took
photos of the injuries,
blood and weapon used.
Warrants were obtained

Wade Hampton regard-
ing a fraud complaint.
There, the pharmacist said
Teague had come in at 10
am requesting two pre-
scriptions be filled for the
drugs Xanax and Soma.

turned to pick up the med-
ication, claiming that he
was getting it for a friend.
He was declined, however,
because the pharmacist
knew the friend that
Teague said he was pick-
ing up the drugs for had
been incarcerated. When
Teague was denied, he lat-
er called the pharmacist,
claiming to be the friend
and later showed back up
at the drug store with a
handwritten note he said
was from the friend that
gave him permission to
pick up the drugs.

Knowing that todays
homes burn faster than
ever, the National Fire
Protection Association
(NFPA) announced Every
Second Counts: Plan Two
Ways Out as the official
theme for this years Fire
Prevention Week cam-
paign, October 8-14, 2017.
Experts say you may have
as little as two minutes (or
even less) to safely escape
a typical home fire from
the time the smoke alarm
sounds.
Modern home furnish-
ings, along with the fact
that newer homes tend to
be built with more open
spaces and unprotect-
ed lightweight construc-
tion, all contribute to an
increased rate at which
home fires burn, said Lor-
raine Carli, vice president
of Outreach and Advocacy
at NFPA. These factors
make home escape plan-
ning and practice critical.

survey recently conducted
by NFPA shows that Amer-

The Warriors strug-
gles continued in Week 6,
as the Riverside offense
could not keep up with
Mauldin in a 44-26 home
loss.
The Mavericks stormed
out to a 14-0 lead, capi-
talizing on an early Riv-
erside turnover. That lead
wouldnt last however, as
the Warriors pulled the
score to within one, 14-
13, following a touchdown
pass from Andrew Brown
to Ryan Perron.
Mauldin scored again,
but Max Louris took the
following kickoff to the
house 79 yards to make
the score 21-20.
The Warriors could not
keep up the pace, drop-
ping to 1-5 on the season
and 0-1 in the region.
Riverside will hit the
road for its next two
games against Hillcrest
and Laurens. The Warriors
will return home on Oct.
20 for a matchup with

Byrnes added a blemish
to its record Friday night,
as the Rebels dropped
their region opening game
to Spartanburg, 21-14, at
home.
The Rebels are now 5-1
on the year with a trip
to Boiling Springs on the
schedule this week.
Spartanburg got off to
a strong start in Duncan,
pounding in two first half
touchdowns. The Rebels
responded in the second
quarter, however, as Rah-
jai Harris scored from six-
yards out to cap a drive of
more than 80 yards.
The Spartanburg de-
fense held strong in the
second half, keeping By-
rnes out of the end zone
in the third quarter.
Brock Carroll pulled the
Rebels within striking dis-
tance in the fourth quarter
with a touchdown run of
his own, but the defense
could not stop the Spar-
tanburg running game, as
the Vikings held on for a
gutsy road win.
The Rebels will spend
the next three weeks on
the road with trips to Na-
tion Ford and Gaffney also
in October.

Abner Creek Baptist
Church held its fifth an-
nual golf tournament to
raise money for missions
in September.
The Doug Bortone Me-
morial Golf Tournament
for Missionsnamed
after its founder, who
passed away this year
raised around $3,900 for
missions. The tournament
was initially started as
a way to raise funds for
missionaries in Toronto,
but it has grown over the
years to include funding
for mission trips to other
areas as well.
This year, there were 13
teams and over 50 play-
ers. The team from Belue
Greer and Eastside are coming off blowouts to face off in a region clash Friday at Dooley
Field. The Eagles are unbeaten heading into the matchup.

It was just a blur Fri-
day night when Greer
swamped Travelers Rest
Highs Homecoming cele-
bration with an avalanche
of points in a 70-3 victory.
Not only did Greer hit
the 70 point mark for just
the fifth time ever, the
Yellow Jackets did it in re-
cord time. The entire sec-
ond half was played in 24
minutes flat, in contrast
to the 75 minutes that the
first half consumed. Offi-
cials invoked the mercy
rule of allowing the clock
to run during the second
half. And run it did, not
even stopping for time
outs or flipping the field
between quarters.
The result is that Greer
had the ball for only four
plays from scrimmage in
the second half.
We only ran 25 plays,
which was by far the few-
est number we have ever

intensified by the Yellow
Jackets opening air raid
when quarterback Trey
Houston fired six straight
passes in a 61-yard drive
that put the winning
points on the board.
Young said the only strat-
egy to the flying start was
trying to get Trey more
comfortable throwing the
ball.
Houston became so
comfortable that he went
on to deliver four more
touchdown passes
Greer receivers who were

roaming freely in the Trav-
elers Rest secondary.
Travelers Rest decid-
ed to kick off to start the
game, and things quick-
ly went downhill for the
Devildogs. Greer complet-
ed five of six passes, the
last a 21-yarder to Quay
White for touchdown less
than two minutes into the
game. Edwin Sales kicked
the first of his ten straight
extra points.
The Devildogs surprised
the visitors by mounting a
threat of their own when
quarterback Wilson Hen-
dricks broke free for 31
yards on Travelers Rests
first possession. Hen-
dricks was injured on the
play, however, and did
not return to the game.
His back-up, wide receiver
Esias Tucker, completed
a 27-yard pass to Derrick
Fields to advance the Dev-
ildogs at the Greer nine
yard line. But the Yellow
Jackets held with the aid
of a couple of penalties.
Travelers Rest was forced
to attempt a field goal
that Edwin Ochoa booted
through the uprights from
the 16 yard line.
Greer answered with
an 80-yard scoring drive
featuring Dre Williams.
The junior running back
ripped off runs of 45 and
18 yards and then walked
into the end zone from
yard out.
The Yellow Jackets de-
fense quickly set up anoth-
er score when Najawuan
Smith sacked Tucker,
causing a fumble that Mc-
Zavion Holley recovered
at the Devildogs 29 yard
line. Houston delivered a
29-yard touchdown pass
to Braxton Collins on the
next play to give Greer a
21-3 lead at the end of the
first quarter.
Collins made some re-

when they are in the 3-4.
They have some other very
good kids including Bran-
don McLoyd, a junior line-
backer and Brandon Bris-

a new linebacker in Israel

good cornerbacks in Deon-
dre Thompson and Devin
Noel. Their safeties are
Deion Blackmon and Quez
Brown, both seniors.
Eastside is playing with
a lot of confidence right
now, and I imagine their
people will turn out in big
numbers for this game.
Theres no question this
is our biggest game yet,
so it should as heck of a
battle in really be a good
atmosphere Friday night,
Coach Young concluded.

and only allowing three.

Houston promptly went to
the air with a touchdown

Halloween may be the
next holiday on the calen-
dar, but Kyle Busch stole
Christmas morning from
Chase Elliott late on Sun-
day afternoon at Dover In-
ternational Speedway.
Running Elliott down
from more than four sec-
onds back in the last 40
laps of the Apache Warrior
400 at the Monster Mile,
Busch powered his No. 18
Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota
around the outside of El-
liotts No. 24 Hendrick Mo-
torsports Chevrolet and
cleared him off Turn 4 as
the cars approached the
white flag.
A lap later, Busch had
his second straight victo-
ry in the Monster Energy
NASCAR Cup Series Play-
off, leaving a disheartened
Elliott still in search of his
first victory in the series
and agonizing over what
he might have done differ-
ently.
Though Elliott was in-
consolable, there were
plenty of positives in his
performance. The Hen-
drick cars showed real
speed for the first time
since the Playoff began
two weeks earlier at Chi-
cagoland, and Elliott
moved on comfortably to
the Round of 12.
Not as fortunate were
Ryan Newman, Austin Dil-
lon, Kasey Kahne and Kurt
Busch, who were elimi-
nated from the Playoffs,
as Ricky Stenhouse Jr.,
claimed the 12th and final
spot in the next round by
two points over Newman,
thanks to a risky-but-ser-
endipitous pit call by crew
chief Brian Pattie.
But it was Busch who
stole the show and stole
the race, running the top
line as he sliced into El-
liotts advantage and diced
his way through traffic
more adroitly than his less
experienced rival.
Man, I saw that carrot
out there, and I wanted to
go and get it, said Busch,
who won for the fourth
time at Dover and the
42nd time in his career.
I got within five lengths
and I stalled out and I was
like, Oh, man, I think that
was it, you know? But I
got back to the top and
got enough momentum
back rolling. Chase was
kind of plugged up with
the lapped cars in front of
him, so I think the lapped
cars actually helped us
with that one.
But, overall, just great
day for us. Great job by
the team being able to
get in Victory Lane here
in Dover. Its been a long

third, tried to console his
teammate, but Elliott felt
he let his team and orga-
nization down when he
failed to beat Busch to the
finish line.
I thought if I had a
clean track, I could have
run as fast as he did, but
I didnt, and I should have
done something differ-
ent, said Elliott, still de-
spondent when he arrived
at the media center for
his post-race interview.
So thats just on me, and
he did a better job than I

ave you ever had such
an incredible story
to tell that figuring
out where to start seems
nearly impossible?
Thats how I feel about
10 days after the birth of
my first child, Penelope
Claire.
I guess I could begin by
telling you how we felt
nine months ago when we
learned baby Penny was
on the way.
It was very welcome
and joyous news, be-
cause wed been hoping
to hear it for well over a
year. My wife and I have
been married for more
than five years and weve
been together since high
school. We always as-
sumed that when the time
came to have children, we
would be able to. There
were certainly times in
the last two years that we
doubted that. Quite a few,
to say the least.
But the Lord, in his
timing, did see fit to bless
us with a child, and last
Saturday my wife labored
to bring her into this
world.
The day was filled with
nervous moments, pain
and lots of tears. After a
long pregnancy and years
of anticipation, my wife
endured 16 hours of labor
to deliver a healthy baby
girl.
For those of you who
havent experienced this
but one day will, I have
news for you: Its not like
what you see on TV.
Ive always been told
that during delivery,
there is a border that the
father can choose to stay
north or south of. Sure, I
planned to watch some of
the delivery, but not near-

More than 100 locals
gathered at Rosies Hot-
dogs at the corner of Main
Street and Pennsylvania
Avenue to celebrate the
restaurants 25th anniver-
sary on Saturday.
As part of the celebra-
tion, local mills compet-
ed to see who could bring
the most canned food for
Greer Community Minis-
tries, accumulating more
than 900 cans.
It went really well. I
think everybody had a
good time, said Michelle
Bradshaw, the daughter of
Owner Rosie Anderson.
Anderson recently
stopped working but still
drops by the business to
catch up with long-time
customers.
She still comes up, and
the people enjoy talking
with her, Bradshaw said.
They miss her being here
too.
Anderson said the peo-
ple are her favorite part of
the business, and custom-
ers continue to ask Brad-
shaw about her mom.
Shes okay, Bradshaw come Monday, Wednesday

Monday. She was up here
Saturday.

did. There was no border,
and once you begin to
witness something like
that, you cant focus on
anything else.
I remember being
awestruck by what I was
seeing. Every now and
then I would mumble
some words of encourage-
ment to my wife, who was
doing the most difficult
thing of her life, but I was
completely distracted by
the spectacular abilities of
the human body.
Also, I was getting
light-headed. Very woozy.
Yep, I was about to pass
out.
When the final push
came and Penny was
being held by the doctor,
I had a flurry of con-
cerns.
Oh no, the baby is
blue. She isnt breathing.
Why isnt she crying yet?
OK, theres the cry. She
must be good. But what
is wrong with her head?
Her head is misshapen. Is
somebody going to help
her? Why is nobody help-
ing my babys head?
I didnt voice any of
these concerns. Rather, I
just looked on helplessly
as the doctors did their
work, trying not to pass
out. Passing out was a
very real concern at this
point.
When the doctor finally
handed Penny to my wife,
she began crying and

ries, Bradshaw said. We
have a set of people that
participated in Freedom
and Friday. On Fridays, its

They just sit back there
and tell stories about way
back when. We love those.

no response. One more

The moment we met
our daughter will forever
be one of the most special
moments in my life, but
it was just the start of the
journey.
The first couple of
nights, we realized very
quickly that we were out
of the frying pan and into
the fire.
Ive never felt more
useless than I did during
the hours and hours my
daughter cried with no re-
lief. We kept doing all the
things they tell you to do,
but she would still cry. My
wife and I looked at one
another at a losssever-
al times. How could we
possibly be parents if we
couldnt find the simple
reason for our daughters
tears?
Those first few nights
were difficult. Penny
struggled to get enough
food. She was constant-
ly gagging and choking.
There was no relief to be
had. No sleep to be had.
When it was time to
discharge us, the nurse
was giving us some final
instructions (something

that its going to take the
best efforts from two
people.

home with his wife, played
by Rooney Mara. After
his unexpected death, we
witness his ghosts emo-

The Survivalist (NR) --
In an oppressively bereft,
post-apocalypse future, a

alone in the forest, farm-

O
n his last three
albums, Southern
rocker Jason Isbell
has established himself as
the best lyricist in Amer-
ica. What a lot of people
dont know is just how
talented he is as a singer
and guitarist. Friday night
inside Charlottes legend-
ary Ovens Auditorium, all
of Isbells skills were on
full display.
The opening act was
Frank Turner, a live wire
British singer/guitarist
with a special gift for en-
gaging the crowd. A dis-
ciple of Springsteen, the
35-year-old Turner played
a frenetic set that ended
with the sellout crowd of
2,400 on their feet. My in-
troduction to the London
native came seven years
ago when he opened for
Social Distortion in Ashe-
ville. It was interesting to
see Friday that Turner is
still employing a lot of the
same methods to get the
crowd involved. His per-
sistent interaction with
fans can be a bit much at
times, but the Charlotte
crowd ate it up. One of
the nights highlights was
when he pulled a random
man out of the crowd to
play the harmonica solos
on two of his best songs,
I Still Believe and Pho-
tosynthesis.

hand-built and wheel-
thrown forms, and adds
mixed media and found
objectsall of which adds
to the narrative. Much of
her work incorporates ele-
ments of dreams and the
mysteries of nature.
Cullen is a well known
potter living and work-
ing in Campobello. He is
a retired filmmaker, who
started throwing pots in
1976. He is a self-taught
potter who has attend-
ed numerous workshops
and seminars. Currently,
he teaches at Spartanburg
Art Museum Art School.
Zacharias is a retired art
professor at Converse Col-
lege in Spartanburg. Most
of the ceramic pieces that
I produce are vessels with
sculptural aspects, he
said. I especially enjoy
making lidded vessels.
With lids in place, these
vessels are about the out-
side forms, proportions,
and how these forms com-
bine and come together.

ally wolf, as the classic
rash of systemic lupus er-
ythematosis was thought
to resemble a wolf bite)
is a complicated group of
related diseases, includ-
ing SLE (the full-blown
syndrome, which can af-
fect many organ systems,
although itself highly
variable), discoid lupus er-
ythematosis (a skin condi-
tion that can exist by itself
or as part of SLE) and sub-
acute cutaneous lupus er-
ythematosis, which I think
you are referring to.
SCLE is a skin condition
that starts as small, red,
scaly raised bumps, which
coalesce or form ring-like
patterns on the trunk,
shoulders, forearms and
neck, but usually not the
face. About a third of the
time, SCLE is related to a
medication. Many medica-
tions are associated with
development of SCLE, in-
cluding blood pressure
medications, some statins,
omeprazole and other an-
ti-ulcer and GERD medica-
tions. About half the time,
SCLE occurs in combina-
tion with systemic lupus.
Treatment of SCLE in-
volves careful avoidance
of direct sunlight, includ-
ing the use of sunscreen
and sun-protective cloth-

bles, low saturated fat, low
processed and high whole-
grain products, and high
omega-3 fatty acids such
as fatty fish and walnuts,
may improve symptoms
of lupus, and is a gener-
ally healthy diet for most
people.

Sertoma Club marks 50 years
The Sertoma Club of Greer celebrated its 50-year
anniversary on Sept. 19 at Greer City Hall. Charter
members Billy McCullough and Jim Benson (above l to
r) were awarded for their service, and Marty Satterfield
(center right) was recognized as the Sertoman of the Year.
Sertoma District Governor Ingrid Erwin served as the
guest speaker at the event, and officers for the 2017-
2018 year were installed. Sertoma is the oldest club in
the United States and provides assistance and education
for the hearing impaired. Those interested in finding out

puts Awakening
Storm in writing

Local author Jonathan
Lowe recently re-pub-
lished his work, Awaken-
ing Storm, in written for-
mat.
Originally published as
an audiobook in 2003-
2004, Awakening Storm
involves a TV preacher
and a psychologist who is
treating a young man for
nightmares.
He wants to stay
awake, Lowe said of the
young man. Every time he
closes his eyes its like the
Twilight Zone.
My favorite scene is
probably in a coffee shop
where the kid works, as
he witnesses a fellow em-
ployee try to impress a girl
with his knowledge of the
magical bean, he contin-
ued. One of his pickup
lines is, bean there, done
that.
In the story, the young
man Michael Rivers fights
nightmares by drinking
coffee to stay awake while
Rivers psychologist Ve-
ronica McCord fights for
custody of her son, who
is being taken to visit the
same preacher who ter-
rorized Rivers in his child-
hood, according to www.

The idea started as a
play produced on stage at
Bob Jones University and
Maranatha Baptist Bible
College, Lowe said. Due
to the response, I decided
to expand the story and
write a novel version.
Lowe became interested
in writing after he worked
for the Postal Service, sort-
ing mail.
In the USPS, I got the
chance to listen to audio-
books, Lowe said. I be-
gan to review them, too.
Now, Lowe is a judge
