Analysis of bridge (cover page)

Selection of problem parameters and member sizes

Group number : 7

Therefore length of the bridge = 20 + (7/12) = 20.58 m

Therefore according to the given information sheet M4 beams should be used.

Width of a M4 beam is 970mm

Minimum distance between two M4 beam is 30mm
Therefore center to center distance between to M4 beam is 1000mm
Assume slab thickness to the transvers section is 160mm

Idealized section

Grillage is place in middle of the two M4 beams.

Here idealized section was design instead of the two M4 beam. When we design the idealized
section we include the transverse slab also into this idealized section.
Because of that transvers section also include to the idealized section we do not need to design
the transverse 2m wide slab separately. It already included into idealized section
But for resist lateral movement and to apply the knife edge load we have to introduce transverse
beam. These beams are not having any impact on the analysis. It has been use only for resist
lateral movement and to keep the grillage############.

Longitudinal beams are simply supported. So we used to pin and roller supported.
We ignore the outer half part when idealizing the grillage.

Load Patterns

For all the load cases we have applied a unit load and then we multiplied in relevant value in the scalar factor.

Load Calculation

HA loading

HA udl = 30kN/m/lane from table 13 of BS 5400 part 2

= 30/3 kn/m

= 10kN/m

Knife edge load

KEL = 120kN from clause 6.22 of BS 5400

=120/3 kN

=120/3 kN

= 40 kN/m

Load due to pedestrians

Imposed load = 5kN/m2

Imposed load as a udl = 5x1 kN/m

= 5 kN/m
