Saving the True Seals
Problem Statement
The problem is the Hawaiin Monk seals population is declining due to
competition with commercial fishing operations and dwindling food stocks that
are causing the seal to become close to endangerment and possible extinction if
we as a community continue to fish and causing conditions that affect the seals.
Purpose/Objective
Finding ways to meet halfway that is a neutral breaking point for both the
fisherman and the seals. Making an effort from our end we would like to see the
same coming from the community as we are doing everything to help as an
organization to bring peace and life to the world.
Alternative Solutions: Solution 1
Having more explosion to education for the fishermen and the locals in the community
and teaching and showing what is truly happening to the seals and how they are being
put in danger over the past years.
Pros-
People can come to terms with the dangers they are causing to the Hawaiin
Monk Seals
They can become educated of the harms and leave having better judgment and a
better attitude for the safety of the seals.
They can be educated and help spread the word about the dangers that are
being brought upon the seals and can help turn over the problem and make a
solution.
Cons-
They will ignore the facts and not be interested in what the educators
have to say
The fishermen wont listen and will continue to fish and continue
endangering the animals
They will have become aggravated with being educated
Solution 2:
Making a law that everyone(fishermen) have to have possession of a permit to
hunt/fish.
Pros-
Can possibly make the numbers of the seals increase instead of decreasing in the
population rates
Making the animal community stronger in the number department and not
making the seals become endangered/ not making the seals closer to extinction
but stray from that
Cons-
The fishermen wont listen and continue to fish illegally
Will make the locals/ community want to fish more and cause more harm
than good
Continue to do what they were doing before and cause the numbers to
decrease more rapidly than before
Recommended Solutions
Controlling the situation and controlling the seals, navy men, and the locals.
Finding a medium for whats best for both sides, finding somewhere where we
can meet halfway.
Action Steps
Setting meetings to agree on certain terms
Reducing fishing to certain day can be a possibly and a neutral spot
Making classes that will educate the community before a hunt/fishing and the
Dos and Donts when out in the field
Putting together volunteer groups to spread the word
Possibly moving the fishing grounds to another destination that doesnt have
other marine animals that can be put into danger.
