About IIT Ropar
Indian Institute of Technology Ropar is one of the eight new IITs set up by the Ministry of
Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India in the year 2008, to expand
the reach and enhance the quality of technical education in the country. This institute is
committed to providing state-of-the-art technical education in a variety of fields and also for
facilitating transmission of knowledge in keeping with latest developments in pedagogy.
These two areas of focus enable students to gain exposure to recent trends in their chosen
domains of study and gain practical experience through a wide variety of activities the
institute facilitates in its own campus and arranges for in collaboration with industry and
other institutes. At present, the institute offers Bachelor of Technology (B. Tech.) program in
Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering.
This program is spread over a period of eight semesters and the institute admits forty
students in each branch, selected through IIT Joint Entrance Examination conducted every
year. In addition, the institute offers doctoral program in several disciplines.

1
School of Mechanical, Materials & Energy Engineering (SMMEE)

Established with the inception of IIT Ropar in 2008, the Department of Mechanical Engineering was re-organized
as the School of Mechanical, Materials and Energy Engineering (SMMEE) in 2010 to encourage interdisciplinary
research. The school currently offers UG and Ph. D. programs in Mechanical Engineering. The school has a
dedicated faculty in all the major areas of mechanical engineering such as design and analysis, fluids and
thermal engineering, materials, and manufacturing. In addition to the conventional core courses, the school
offers state-of-the-art courses and research opportunities in areas such as product design and realization,
sustainability for engineers, continuum mechanics, medical devices and equipments, biomechanics, control
engineering, noise and vibration, finite element analysis, energy science and technology, robotics and
mechatronics, micro-manufacturing, and tribology. Various laboratories have been set up with modern facilities
for strengthening teaching and research.

Undergraduate and Ph.D. Programs

The School of Mechanical, Materials & Energy Engineering currently offers Bachelors of Technology (B.Tech.) in
Mechanical Engineering and Doctorate of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Mechanical Engineering. Its current intake is
about 40 students in B.Tech. program every year. In addition, several Ph.D. students are admitted every year. The
first undergraduate batch of students completed their degrees in 2012.

The School focuses on teaching and research in all the core research areas of mechanical engineering,
specifically design, manufacturing, materials, and thermal sciences. Apart from the courses that are traditionally
taught as a part of mechanical engineering, as included in the GATE syllabus, the School also encourages
students to credit advanced level courses such as, finite elements, biomechanics, tribology, micro-
