DESIGN OF LACING:

Step 1: Assume single or double lacing:

a. Assume angle of inclination of lacing. It should be kept between 40 to 70. (cl. 7.6.4, IS 800:
2007, page no. 50)
b. Find unsupported length of lacing bar a1.

Step 2: Check for slenderness ratio. (cl. 7.6.4.1, IS 800: 2007, page. no.50)
1
Slenderness ratio = < 50

Step 3: Find transverse shear in lacing.
a. Transverse shear to be resisted Vt= 2.5% of the axial force.
b. Compressive force in lacing bars

=

Where, N = 2 for single lacing
= 4 for double lacing
Step 4: Design the lacing flat.

Sizing of lacing flat:

a. Find the effective length of lacing (Le). (cl. 7.6.6.3, IS 800: 2007, page. no.50)
Bolted connection: Single lacing Le = L,
Double lacing Le = 0.7 L. Where L = S cosec
Welded connection: Single and double lacing Le = 0.7 distance between inner ends of welds.

b. Find thickness of lacing flat (cl. 7.6.3, IS 800: 2007, page. no.50)
Minimum thickness of lacing flat = (1/40) Le (For single lacing)
= (1/60) Le (For double lacing)

c. Find width of lacing (cl. 7.6.2, IS 800: 2007, page. no.50)

b =3d (d= diameter of bolt)

d. Assume size of flat section based on length and thickness found in step 4 a, b, c.

Check for compressive Strength:

a. Find minimum radius of gyration of lacing bar.

d. Nos. of Bolts = Force / Design Strength of Bolt

Step 4: Design tie plate. (cl. 7.7.2.3, IS 800: 2007, page. no.51)
a. Effective depth = spacing + 2 Cyy (C.G.) > 2bf
b. Overall depth required = effective depth + 2 30
c. Thickness of tie plate Le = 1/50 (Spacing + 2g) , where g = gauge distance.
