Lesson Planning

Waynesburg University

Writing the lesson plan:

Translating thoughts into a plan of action
_____________________________________________
Pennsylvania Academic Standard(s) addressed during this lesson:
(Provide Standard number and statement)

8.4.6. GRADE 6
A. Identify and explain how individuals
and groups made significant political
and cultural contributions to world
history.
B. Identify and explain important
documents, material artifacts and
historic sites in world history.
C. Identify and explain how continuity
and change has affected belief systems,
commerce and industry, innovations,
settlement patterns, social
organizations, transportation and
women’s roles in world history.
D. Explain how conflict and cooperation
among social groups and organizations
affected world history.
Lesson Objective(s)
(Stated in observable and measurable terms)

SWBAT preview significant figures in the ancient world by selecting one from a given list and researching 15-20 facts about that
individual.

Assessment Plan
(What will be done to determine if lesson objectives have been met?)

The assessment plan is for students to create a presentation of their research using the Prezi online program.
Materials:
Textbook, notebook/binder, pencil, mobile computer lab with internet connection, note-taking sheets

Inclusion Techniques for Students with Special Needs:

Modified directions and task goals. Inclusion aid and reading specialist will be present in classroom as well. Some students will
be pulled by special education teacher for small-group instruction.

Enrichment Techniques:

Assignment modified with more challenging goals. Quest (gifted support) teacher will provide addition readings for extra
information, with select students possibly being pulled out for more advanced study in the library using higher level sources.

Lesson Differentiation (What modifications/accommodations will be made to ensure that ALL students have access to and are able
to participate in the lesson): Those items listed in the above two categories will be practiced, as well as student choice based on
interest within the given unit of study.
Lesson Presentation
Introduction/Motivational Activities/Anticipatory Set:
Watch a YouTube video clip giving a bio about Sidney Crosby. Students will watch and record facts about Sidney Crosby.
Students will share lists with a partner, then share with the class. We will discuss good biographical facts versus ones that we
should not record.

Detailed Teaching Sequence:

(Provide sufficient detail that would enable a substitute to effectively present this lesson. Bulleted statements are preferred)
1. Focus Activity: If someone were to do research on you, what information would definitely be found? Record 5-6 ideas
about what someone would find out about you if they had to research.
2. After discussion of focus topic, complete the Anticipatory Set.
3. Students will receive a list of ancient figures from our upcoming study of The Ancient World. Students will be asked to
select one individual to learn more about, and they will only be able to use the Biographical Dictionary in the textbook to
help them in their selection.
4. Once they have selected their historical figure, students will receive a project overview page and a rubric. All directions
and expectations will be reviewed.
5. Introduce the Prezi program. Using the mobile computer lab, students will get to “play” with Prezi through guided and
independent practice in order to learn how the program works.
6. Students will then create a Prezi Presentation about their historical figure using researched notes and facts. Students
will primarily use their textbook as the source of information, mainly because this is simply a preview of the important
figures of history. They will record their notes, in a logical and orderly fashion on the note sheet, and then transfer those
ideas into the Prezi program. Students are to create a title slide, and then have at least 4-6 accompanying slides with no
more than 8.

Guided Practice/Independent Practice/Assessment Activities

The assessment activity is the completion of the Prezi Presentation, and how well students have completed the work based on the
rubric.

Closure:
We will view the Prezi’s created by the students, and then allow for student interaction between the Prezi’s. Students in the
audience will be able to ask questions of the presenter about the information, as audience students will be provided with a
questioning sheet.
