Getting Started

uEstablishing Communication, page 8

uNavigating the Application, page 11

Thank you for choosing the Caterpillar Electronic Engine Systems Application Users
Manual. This application provides a full range of Engine diagnostics for systems controlled
by the following Caterpillar Electronic Control Units (ECUs):

3116 C-10
3126 C-12
3176 C-15
3406 C-16
C-9 C-18

This chapter provides instructions on loading the application and navigating through its
menu hierarchy.

NOTE:
i This application is supported by both the Pro-Link GRAPHIQ and the Pro-Link

Plus. This manual uses Pro-Link to refer to both products.

Chapter 2 Getting Started

Establishing Communication
After connecting Pro-Link to the vehicle and powering up, Pro-Link attempts
to establish communication with the ECU. If successful, the readout window
presents an ECU Identification screen.

To establish communication:
1 Attach Pro-Link to the vehicle and power up.

2 The Pro-Link readout window presents the Application Welcome screen,

while it attempts to establish communication with the ECU. This screen
displays for a few seconds.

If Pro-Link displays:

NO DATA RECEIVED, the ECU was not detected.

You may have a loose connection: power-down, check all
cables and connections and power-up again.
The ECU may not be powered-up: be sure the ignition key
turned to the ON position.
The connector may be faulty or may require a different
adapter: try a different connector, and if necessary, con-
firm your adapter selection with the vehicles repair speci-
fication.

NO APPLICATION DATA, an ECU was detected, but it was not

supported by the application.

NO ENGINE DATA, a supported ECU was detected, but com-

munication failed after ECU detection. Power-down and up
again. If you still receive this message, you may have a faulty
ECU.

Programming Customer Specified Parameters

Programming Customer Specified Parameters

Customer Specified Parameters are used to let the fleet manager determine the
fleet guidelines. Some of these parameters will affect the performance of the
vehicle as it relates to Shift Points, Power, RPM and other parameters. The pa-
rameters cannot be accessed by a driver or anyone who does not have a
password (see Changing Customer Passwords, on page 35).

Customer parameters may be changed as many times as the fleet manager sees
fit, based on change of drivers or of conditions that a CAB may be facing.

Parameters that require Factory Passwords cannot be programmed with this tool
except under special conditions. The special conditions are determined by the
ECM. If the ECM determines that a parameter, Engine Serial Number, FLS (Full
Load Setting), or the FTS (Full Torque Setting), should be programmed for proper
engine performance, then the parameters will appear first when entering the
Customer Specified Parameter function. The parameters can only be programmed
once and, therefore, must be programmed correctly the first time. When entering
the function, the parameters continue to appear first until they are programmed.

NOTE:
i Refer to Appendix B, "Programmable Parameters", for a complete listing of
all supported programmable parameters, for all ECU types.

To program a customer specified parameter:

1 From the menu selection screen, select Engine.

2 From the Display Menu, select Cust Spec Params.

Finding the Engine Rating

Finding the Engine Rating

The ECUs Personality Module defines the horsepower family (such as 325 hp)
and may contain several ratings within that family. The rating number defines
which rating is used (such as 325 hp @ 1900 rpm or 325 hp @ 2100 rpm) within
the family.

Use the Engine Rating Spec feature to view the engine rating specifications, includ-
ing software type and the currently programmed rating number.

To locate the Engine Rating:

1 From the menu selection screen, select Engine.

2 From the Display Menu, select Engine Rating Spec.

Troubleshooting
The Troubleshooting feature allows you to override the normal settings of certain
systems for diagnostic purposes. The settings remain in effect after exiting the
Troubleshooting options, so you can use other diagnostic options.

NOTE:
i To return all settings to normal, turn the ECU off and back on again.
The Troubleshooting menu provides the following options:

Cooling Fan (pg. 62)

Powertrain Data Link (pg. 63)

Idle Shutdown timer (pg. 64)

Cooling Fan
The Cooling Fan option allows you to power the Cooling Fan ON and OFF, as
needed, to diagnose malfunction.

NOTE:
i The cooling fan remains on as long as the override is ON, or until the ECU
power is cycled.

To activate the cooling fan option:

1 From the menu selection screen, select Engine.

2 From the DISPLAY MENU, select Troubleshooting.

PID Fault Code Description

The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) and the American Trucking Associa-
tion (ATA) have developed a standardized list of Parameter Identification (PID)
descriptions. In each case, the PID is identified by a number and a SAE PID de-
scription. There is also a corresponding Pro-Link PID description, which is the
way the PID appears in the Pro-Link readout window.

This section provides a listing of the operating data readouts, listed in numerical
order and using SAE Parameter Identification (PID) numbers.

NOTE:
i No engine system uses all of these operating parameters. In any case,

your Pro-Link will readout only those that apply to the system you are
testing.

NOTE:
i Refer to the system manufacturers shop manual for detailed diagnostic
and repair procedures as well as applicable specifications.

NOTE:
i Many of the PIDs are listed with operating ranges. The limits of the ranges
were determined by the way computers work rather than actual operation
of the system in question. In many cases, the operating system will no be
capable of reaching the extremes of the operating range listed.
