Manual Overview
This manual provides basic and detailed information to support you in using the
Caterpillar Electronic Engine Systems Application.
Conventions
This section provides descriptions of the conventions used throughout this
manual.
Special Messages

Troubleshooting
Information intended to help you to address or anticipate potential issues are pre-
sented in the following manner:
Specialized Text
The following specially formatted text is used to help you to differentiate certain
elements discussed within this manual:
Getting Started
Thank you for choosing the Caterpillar Electronic Engine Systems Application Users
Manual. This application provides a full range of Engine diagnostics for systems controlled
by the following Caterpillar Electronic Control Units (ECUs):
3116 C-10
3126 C-12
3176 C-15
3406 C-16
C-9 C-18
This chapter provides instructions on loading the application and navigating through its
menu hierarchy.
NOTE:
i This application is supported by both the Pro-Link GRAPHIQ and the Pro-Link
Plus. This manual uses Pro-Link to refer to both products.
Establishing Communication
After connecting Pro-Link to the vehicle and powering up, Pro-Link attempts
to establish communication with the ECU. If successful, the readout window
presents an ECU Identification screen.
To establish communication:
1 Attach Pro-Link to the vehicle and power up.
If Pro-Link finds and recognizes the ECU, the screen shows the ECU iden-
tification information. For example:
C A T 3 1 7 6 E LE C T R O N I C S
FUNCTIONS - OCT91
3 E 6 3 9 7 - 00 / 1 1 / 1 . 1 1

NOTE:
i The above options are listed in the order in which they are presented on
the Pro-Link screen.
NOTE:
i A live connection with the vehicle is required in order to use the applica-
tions features. Be sure that you have established a connection, as
instructed under Establishing Communication, on page 8.
Making Selections
In order to use the features provided with this application, you will need to select
from various menus presented on the Pro-Link screen. Making selections typi-
cally involves using the arrow keys navigate to a desired option, then pressing the
key.
The following convention is used throughout this manual in order to provide ab-
breviated instructions on making on-screen selections.
Use the Active Diag Code option to view existing Diagnostic codes that are currently
active.
1 From the menu selection screen, select Engine. The screen displays the
Display Menu.

2 Press to select Active Diag Codes. The screen displays active codes.
NOTE:
i Refer to Appendix C, "Caterpillar Fault Code Descriptions", for listings of
all supported fault codes.
Line 4 shows up and down arrows if there is more than one code; scroll
through the codes with the and keys.
Use the Logged Fault Codes option to review the history of the fault code for data
trends that may help you diagnose the issue. You can also use this option to clear
logged fault codes from the ECU.
NOTE:
i Some codes require a password to clear and some cannot be cleared.
To review and/or clear Logged Fault Codes:

tic clock. An asterisk (*) appears to the right of the clock time if the code is
currently active.
Line 4shows Enter to clear if the code can be cleared from the ECU
memory.
5 Select Yes.
The screen may prompt for a password in order to clear the code; otherwise,
it simply clears the code.
When the code is cleared, the screen displays the next available code.
NOTE:
i Logged Event Codes may active or inactive.
Use the Logged Event Code option to review event code history for data trends that
may help you diagnose an issue. You can also use this option to clear logged
event codes from the ECU.

eters grouped together), refer to the users manual for the Pro-Link
product you are using.
NOTE:

DATA LIST
Customer parameters may be changed as many times as the fleet manager sees
fit, based on change of drivers or of conditions that a CAB may be facing.
Parameters that require Factory Passwords cannot be programmed with this tool
except under special conditions. The special conditions are determined by the
ECM. If the ECM determines that a parameter, Engine Serial Number, FLS (Full
Load Setting), or the FTS (Full Torque Setting), should be programmed for proper
engine performance, then the parameters will appear first when entering the
Customer Specified Parameter function. The parameters can only be programmed
once and, therefore, must be programmed correctly the first time. When entering
the function, the parameters continue to appear first until they are programmed.
NOTE:
i Refer to Appendix B, "Programmable Parameters", for a complete listing of
all supported programmable parameters, for all ECU types.

Data List Descriptions
This section provides a listing of the operating data readouts, listed in numerical
order and using SAE Parameter Identification (PID) numbers.
NOTE:
i No engine system uses all of these operating parameters. In any case,
your Pro-Link will readout only those that apply to the system you are
testing.
NOTE:
i Refer to the system manufacturers shop manual for detailed diagnostic
and repair procedures as well as applicable specifications.
NOTE:
i Many of the PIDs are listed with operating ranges. The limits of the ranges
were determined by the way computers work rather than actual operation
of the system in question. In many cases, the operating system will no be
capable of reaching the extremes of the operating range listed.
