Finishing Well

Nehemiah 6

In the 2008 Olympics at Beijing, US Olympian Hurdler Lolo Jones was favored to win the
100 meter hurdles. In the final competition she was pulling away from the pack when she
clipped the second to last hurdle causing her to stumble and break stride. That stumble
dropped her back from 1 place to a 7 -place finish. After the race she was seen pounding
st th

the ground in tears mouthing the words, why, why, why? In the end her strong start didnt
count for anything, the 8 hurdles she cleared didnt count for anything, her pulling away from
the other runners didnt count for anything. To earn Olympic metal its not how you start but
how you finish that counts.

Thats pretty true in life too - how we finish is more important than how we start. There are
approximately 100 detailed biographies of men and women in the Bible, and roughly two-
thirds of them dont end well. Paul was able to say, I finished the race but a lot of people
who start the race well, dont finish the race well. No matter what our age is, whether were
closer to the starting line than the finish line, or were about to break the tape, it should be
our aim to finish well.

But as well see in Nehemiah 6 this morning, finishing well doesnt just have to refer to the
end of our lives it can refer to being faithful to complete a task God that God has given us
to do. No matter what your age is, God has given you work to do for His glory in this season
of your life. And you want to finish it well, and then the Lord will call you on to a different
season and task, and you want to finish that well.

Title: Finishing Well

Neh. 6:1-4 (pray)

If you havent been with us, Nehemiah was the cupbearer to the King of Persia when God
called him to travel 800 miles to Jerusalem to help his people rebuild the walls and restore
the safety and dignity of a devastated city. In chapter 4 we saw that the surrounding
nations, led by three shady characters named Sanballat, Tobiah, and Geshem, were furious
that the wall was being rebuilt because that meant that they wouldnt be able to kick
Jerusalem around anymore and take economic advantage of her and here in Chapter 6 as
the wall nears completion we find these guys are even more determined to stop Nehemiah.

But when they hear that the wall is almost finished and that there was no breach left in it,
they realize that attacking the city by stealth isnt an option anymore. The city isnt going to
be a pushover anymore, partially because the walls are almost completely rebuilt, but also
because Nehemiah has restored the spirit and confidence to a fractured and disheartened
people. So Sanballat and his friends switch strategies and rather than attack the city, they
decide to attack Nehemiahs character with the hope of getting him to compromise in such a
way that would damage his reputation and sabotage the work.

Few things can be more dangerous to a believers character and testimony than
compromise. Im not talking about the kind of compromises we all need to make on non-
essential issues. Im not talking about meeting people halfway when there is a difference of
opinion or preference on issues that dont bump against Gods word. If we never make
concessions with others, were probably proud and stubborn. Thats not the kind of
compromise Im talking about. Compromise can also mean to make a shameful concession
and it can mean to weaken and damage, and all that is what I mean by compromise:
choices and decisions that weaken and damage our character and reputation through
shameful concessions that God warns us not to make. As we unpack this chapter I want to
point out four characteristics of compromise that are played out between Sanballat and
Nehemiah.

I.Compromise is often just a small step in a bad direction

Notice how Sanballat and his allies have changed their tone towards Nehemiah. In chapter
4 they are ridiculing and threatening to kill the Jews, but now they come with a friendly
invitation: lets meet at the Starbucks in Ono and talk over our differences. It would have
been a tempting offer. First of all, they were the prominent leaders of the nations
surrounding Jerusalem. Might not hurt to try to build a bridge to these guys and maybe build
some personal credibility as well.

On top of that, Ono was only about 28 miles away Nehemiah could be there and back
again in a few days. Not a big deal, whats a few more days lost on the building project?

And thats how compromise often comes to us: just a small step in a bad direction. With
compromise, youre not going the whole distance; youre just taking a small step towards it.
And thats precisely the danger of compromise: it doesnt seem like such a big deal cause
its such a small step. But the enemy of our souls knows that all he has to do to change our
destination is to change our direction.

That danger can be amplified when we feel strong in a particular area. Nehemiah was in a
stronger position now than he was a few weeks earlier. Then they could laugh at his
aspirations, not those plans are almost nearly complete. He is a success, the city is strong,
his leadership has been validated by the results. That sense of strength could have made
Nehemiah relax his guard.

Sometimes the areas where we are most vulnerable are the areas where we are least
vulnerable if we grow overconfident in our strength and stop humbly depending on the
Lord for our strength. Paul warns us in 1 Cor. 10:12: So, if you think you are standing firm
(thats our sense of strength in an area), be careful that you dont fall!

I have a friend who many years ago left his wife for a woman that he worked with. And
heres the shocker: he and his wife AND the other woman were all Christians! How did he
get to the point that he abandoned his wife and children and moved in with this woman? It
started with a small step: they started taking lunch together and talking about spiritual things
together. Nothing sinful about eating lunch, nothing sinful about talking about spiritual
things. And the spiritual component of their relationship made them feel a false sense of
strength against temptation. But deep inside, they began to realize that they were taking a
small step in a bad direction.

This story has a happy ending. The Lord touched his heart after about a year and he deeply
repented and returned to his wife who deeply forgave him and God restored their marriage.
Thank God for His redemptive mercy that can take the mess we make of our lives and
redeem it for something good. But there was so much heartache and loss and damage over
that year and beyond. Many a person who has withstood a full-on frontal assault has fallen
by increments through compromise.

Dont take the first step

Nehemiah was wise enough to see through their disguised friendliness and know that they
meant to hurt him, not talk with him. If we could see that sin never has our good in mind,
always our harm. Satan never has our good at heart, only our harm, wed know that that
first small step is not a small step at all, its a huge step in the wrong direction.

So how do we resist the call of compromise? The same way Nehemiah did. He refused to
even take the first step toward them. Four times they asked him to meet that can get
wearying. Temptation to compromise is often relentless. The enemy of our souls is
persistent if nothing else. But Nehemiah gives no ground. He doesnt try to rephrase the
answer, or appease their request. He just tells them he cant come, hes busy working on a
great work.

How do we resist compromise? By not taking the first small step. By keeping our eyes on
Jesus, our faith in God, and our hands busy with the work He has called us to do. I think
thats a part of what it means to walk in the light to be where God calls us to be when God
calls us to be there doing what Gods called us to do. And when we sin (which is to take a
step in the wrong direction) we come back to the light through confession of that sin and
repentance, receiving Gods forgiveness and cleansing and were put back on the right path
and in the right place. When you are convicted of an area where you have been
compromising, or youre being tempted to compromise, bring it to the light, confess it to the
God, and receive forgiveness through Jesus blood, and grace to stand firm in the face of
future compromise.

II. Fear of what people think of us can be a powerful pressure to compromise (vv.
5-9)

When Sanballat and co saw that Nehemiah wouldnt meet with them, they sent an open
letter (which meant that anyone who wanted to could read it) to Nehemiah accusing him of
setting himself up as king, and staging some prophets to confirm it. Its an accusation that
would be very damaging to his relationship to the king of Persia who supported him on this
trip, who would view this as a direct betrayal of his trust and confidence in Nehemiah. Its
the same accusation that stopped the work 12 years earlier under Ezra, and its an
accusation that could cost Nehemiah both the work and his life. And all he has to do to fix it,
his enemies say is, come and let us take counsel together. (vs. 7) Just meet with us
Nehemiah and Im sure we can straighten all this out.

If Nehemiah had been the kind of man who feared what people thought of him, he probably
would have stopped everything to shut this slander up. The goal of this letter is stated in
verse 9: they all wanted to frighten us, thinking, Their hands will drop from the work, and it
will not be done.

Fear of what people think about us can be a powerful motivation towards compromise. It
can pressure us to morph our opinions into the shape of the crowd were hanging with so
that we become a type of human chameleon, shifting our convictions to match whatever
group were near. Fear of what people think of us can tempt us to push aside the voice of
our conscious when the boss asks us to do something we dont think is right. It can press
our mouths shut when an opportunity to tell someone about Jesus comes up. In this way,
the work of the gospel can be stopped by the fear of what people think of us.

How did Nehemiah deal with these accusations and the natural fear that others might think
they are true? Once again, he just stands his ground. He answers their slander with the
truth: no such things as you say have been done, for you are inventing them out of your
own mind. He doesnt run around trying to defend himself, he doesnt leave everything to
take counsel with them (which simply would have been them killing him), he doesnt see it
as his responsibility to silence every bad thing that could be said or thought about him. He
simply calls their bluff and keeps working. And I think its fair to say that to some degree he
did deal with fear, but instead of taking counsel with his enemies to resolve things, he takes
counsel with God. They wanted to frighten him, but he prays But now, O God, strengthen
my hands.

There is no better refuge from the fear of what people think of us than the fear of God. The
fear of the Lord doesnt paralyze us, it sets us free. Its not a snare, its a key to unlock the
cage of the fear of man. There will come a day when we will all see that there is no opinion
in all the universe that really matters except Gods opinion. The Lord wants to help us see
and believe that here and now, and give us a boldness that frees us from the fear of what
people think about us. Stand firm in the face of compromise.
III. Spiritual compromise is often just self interest in religious garb

Finally we come to this odd section. Read vv. 10-14.

Nehemiah goes to visit a prophet named Shemaiah who gives a terrifying vision of people
coming to kill Nehemiah by night. He offers to go with him (maybe he says his life is in
danger too) and they can shut themselves in the temple. But its a fraud. Shemaiah was
paid to give this false prophesy to scare Nehemiah into compromising his character and
Gods word in a way that would surely damage his reputation. Nehemiah answers
Shemaiah on two levels:
Should a man such as I run away? Im not the kind of guy who runs away from danger.
And what man such as I could go into the temple and live? I am not a priest and God should
and would smite me dead if I went into that section of the temple, even to save my own life.
I am not worthy of doing that. Nehemiah stands firm. He cant be swayed, and the secret is
that he feared God. So often after dealing with men, he goes to God. Prayer is a constant in
this book, sometimes just quick prayers but it reveals that Nehemiah lived his life aware of
Gods sovereignty above all things.

One of the most serious compromises is spiritual compromise: using God for our own
selfish interests. And again, it can come in many forms: believing something is true, not
because weve been convinced by scripture but because we want it to be true. It can come
in the form of following a religious leader without question because we dont want to risk
their disapproval. There is always a temptation to put ourselves at the center of our faith
instead of keeping God in the center. Discipleship is a lifelong process of taking ourselves
off the throne and putting God on the throne of our lives! When God is on the throne, we
wont allow anyone to intimidate us into spiritual compromise.

The wall is finished (vv. 15-19)

Through all of this, Nehemiah stands firm and keeps working and the wall was finished in an
amazing 52 days. Every scoffer is silenced and his enemies are silenced. Tobiah keeps
persisting, but Nehemiah is steadfast. Every plan to compromise his character fails and the
task God called him to months ago is completed. His work isnt done next God will call
him to rebuild the community of God but this task, the task of rebuilding the wall is
finished. Nehemiah completed this assignment and he finished well.

Conclusion

God calls us to finish well not just at the end of our lives, but to finish well the assignment
He has given us right now. But the reality is, we have all failed at points. We have all clipped
hurdles and stumbled. We can all think of ways we have compromised and fallen. God calls
us to live an uncompromising life and finish well. But if we do fall, when we fall, what hope
do we have? What hope can pick us up so that we can run the race again?

I began this message with a story of hurdler Lolo Jones. Let me close with a story about a
runner named John Landy. Landy was an Australian Olympic runner in the 50s. One of the
races he will be best remembered for happened at the Australian National Championships
in the 1500 meter race. A man named Ron Clarke was leading the pack. Clarke was the
1500 meter world champion at the time and it looked like he had this race, when another
runner clipped Clarkes heel causing him to fall. Landy had to leap over him to not run over
him. But incredibly, in an unforgettable display of sportsmanship, Landy stopped and
doubled back, helping Clarke back to his feet and back into the race.

Landy then went on to run the race, and in whats considered one of the greatest moments
in Australian sports history, he made up the deficit and won the race.

In the race we are running, there is only one Champion. We have all stumbled and fallen
none is righteous, no not one and we were disqualified from the race and cut off from God
by our sin. Jesus entered the human race, and ran it perfectly without stumbling he never
sinned in thought, word, or deed. But Jesus not only finished the race perfectly, he stooped
to pick up fallen sinners and help us back into the race. On the cross Jesus said, It is
finished! Not it is well begun, or I got it started, you take it from here. He finished well, and
because he finished well, we have the hope of finishing well too, because our sins are
forgiven, we have been picked up to run again, and by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the
author and finisher of our faith we can and by His grace, will - finish well too.

Lets pray.

Text: Exo 3:1-8

Exo 3:1 Now Moses kept the flock of Jethro his father in law, the
priest of Midian: and he led the flock to the backside of the desert, and
came to the mountain of God, even to Horeb.
Exo 3:2 And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him in a flame of
fire out of the midst of a bush: and he looked, and, behold, the bush
burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed.
Exo 3:3 And Moses said, I will now turn aside, and see this great
sight, why the bush is not burnt.
Exo 3:4 And when the LORD saw that he turned aside to see, God
called unto him out of the midst of the bush, and said, Moses, Moses.
And he said, Here am I.
Exo 3:5 And he said, Draw not nigh hither: put off thy shoes from off
thy feet, for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground.
Exo 3:6 Moreover he said, I am the God of thy father, the God of
Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. And Moses hid his
face; for he was afraid to look upon God.

Mat 20:2 He agreed to pay them the regular wage, a silver coin a day,
and sent them to work in his vineyard. (gnb)
KJV - Mat 20:3 He went out again to the marketplace at nine o'clock
and saw some men standing there doing nothing,
Mat 20:5 Again he went out about the sixth and ninth hour (twelve

Mat 20:6 And about the eleventh hour (five o'clock) he went out, and
found others standing idle, and saith unto them, Why stand ye here
all the day idle?
Mat 20:7 They say unto him, Because no man hath hired us. He saith
unto them, Go ye also into the vineyard; and whatsoever is right, that
shall ye receive.

those who were hired last and ending with those who were hired
first.'

hour) were paid a silver coin each.

be paid, they thought they would get more; but they too were given a

DIVINE VICTORY!
Prayer points at Hearken Unto me Oh Lord, RCCG Victory Chapel,
Magodo, Lagos on 22nd October, 2014.

MAIN TEXT:
2Ch 20:15 And he said, Hearken ye, all Judah, and ye inhabitants of
Jerusalem, and thou king Jehoshaphat, Thus saith the LORD unto you,
Be not afraid nor dismayed by reason of this great multitude; for the
battle is not yours, but God's.
GNB - 2Ch 20:15 Jahaziel said, "Your Majesty and all you people of
Judah and Jerusalem, the LORD says that you must not be
discouraged or be afraid to face this large army. The battle depends
on God, not on you.

Divine Victory happens when God fights for you! Divine victory happens when
the victory depends on God and not man. Divine victory has marks and
characteristics that make the whole world know clearly that it was God who
fought for you and gave the victory. We will use these characteristics to move
the hand of God in prayers.

Father in the name of Jesus..

CHARACTERISTICS OF DIVINE VICTORY WHEN GOD GIVE IS ABOUT

TO GIVE YOU VICTORY :-

A. YOU WILL NOT NEED TO DENY GOD

Dan 6:10 When Daniel learned that the order had been signed, he went home.
In an upstairs room of his house there were windows that faced toward
Jerusalem. There, just as he had always done, he knelt down at the open
windows and prayed to God three times a day.
Dan 6:11 When Daniel's enemies observed him praying to God,

1. Thank you Jesus because I will never need to deny you to get victory.
2. In every area of my life that I have denied you and my Christian heritage
for a morsel of Porridge Forgive me Lord!
3. I repent of all compromises that I have done in the fear of tomorrow
4. I received boldness to fight! I receive boldness to pursue!
5. Release on me a fresh grace to pray and wait on you until it becomes a
habit.
6. Every evil monitoring spirit that is waiting to destroy me before my
breakthrough I bind them and cast them out of my life and vicinity!

B. EVERYTHING WILL OBEY YOU (INCLUDING PLANTS, ANIMALS,

WEATHER ETC.)

Dan 6:20 When he got there, he called out anxiously, "Daniel, servant of the
living God! Was the God you serve so loyally able to save you from the lions?"
Dan 6:21 Daniel answered, "May Your Majesty live forever!
Dan 6:22 God sent his angel to shut the mouths of the lions so that they would
not hurt me. He did this because he knew that I was innocent and because I
have not wronged you, Your Majesty."
Dan 6:23 The king was overjoyed and gave orders for Daniel to be pulled up
out of the pit. So they pulled him up and saw that he had not been hurt at all,
for he trusted God.

7. Daddy, let the world know this year that I am serving a living God.
8. Lord Jesus, release the evidence of knowing you into my family, business
and plans.
9. They are waiting, I am waiting Lord, manifest your power irreversibly in
my life.
10. I ask in the name of Jesus that the ministry of angels and the full power
of the hosts of Heavens be released to fight for me.
11. Every lion of this world spiritual, financial, emotional set to devour me
shut their mouth!
12. It was a long night in the den of the lion for Daniel. It ended in the
morning. I decree that every long night that I have passed through will come
to an end this morning.
13. You fight for the innocent, fight for against all forms of injustice.
14. The lions obeyed. I ask today that the laws of business, competition,
progress will answer to me and favor me!
15. Daniel came out unhurt - In this battle that I am facing now, I will come
out unhurt in the name of Jesus name.
16. I decree in the name of Jesus - I will not go before my time!

C. YOUR ENEMIES WILL BE TRAPPED AND THEY WILL BE CONSUMED

INSTEAD OF YOU
Dan 6:24 Then the king gave orders to arrest all those who had
accused Daniel, and he had them thrown, together with their wives
and children, into the pit filled with lions. Before they even reached
the bottom of the pit, the lions pounced on them and broke all their
bones.

17. Let the law of replacement work for me! Every form of attack in whatever
realm back to sender!
During my trials, let me not breakdown.
18. When the list of victims are being collated between now and the end of
the year, I decree that for me and all that you have given me, our names will
not be on the list.
19. In the name of Jesus, I will laugh last!

D. YOU WILL BE PROMOTED AND YOUR STATUS WILL CHANGE

Dan 6:26 I command that throughout my empire everyone should

fear and respect Daniel's God. "He is a living God, and he will rule
forever. His kingdom will never be destroyed, and his power will never
come to an end.
Dan 6:27 He saves and rescues; he performs wonders and miracles
in heaven and on earth. He saved Daniel from being killed by the
lions."
Dan 6:28 Daniel prospered during the reign of Darius and the reign
of Cyrus the Persian.

20. Lord, because of what you have done and because of what you will do in
my life Men will know that you are real!
21. Make me a testimony. Make my home a testimony. Make my lineage a
testimony.
22. Living God who rules forever rule upon my life now and forever!
23. King Darius saw it and declared that you save and rescues Save me!
Rescue me now!

1Co 2:9 But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither
have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath
prepared for them that love him.

24. After this victory, I will be promoted beyond imagination!

25. You perform wonders and miracles, Lord in the matter of ( input whatever
you are in need of now) perform wonders and miracles!
FOR IN JESUS NAME WE HAVE PRAYED.

NO MORE DELAY, NO
MORE WAITING!
Prayer Points Posted on the 1st September, 2014

Joh 5:1 After this there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up
to Jerusalem.
Joh 5:2 Now there is a pool at the Sheep Gate at Jerusalem, which is
called in Hebrew Bethesda, having five porches.
Joh 5:3 In these lay a great multitude of those who were sick, of
blind, lame, withered, waiting for the moving of the water.
Joh 5:4 For an angel went down at a certain time into the pool and
troubled the water. Then whoever first stepped in after the troubling
of the water was made whole of whatever disease he had.
Joh 5:5 And a certain man was there, who had an infirmity thirty-
eight years.
Joh 5:6 When Jesus saw him lying, and knowing that he had spent
much time, He said to him, Do you desire to be made whole?
Joh 5:7 The infirm man answered Him, Sir, when the water is
troubled, I have no one to put me into the pool. But while I am coming,
another steps down before me.
Joh 5:8 Jesus says to him, Rise, take up your bed and walk.
Joh 5:9 And immediately the man was made whole and took up his
bed and walked. And it was a sabbath on that day.
Joh 5:10 Therefore the Jews said to him who had been healed, It is
the sabbath. It is not lawful for you to take up the bed.
Joh 5:11 He answered them, He who made me whole said to me, Take
up your bed and walk.
Joh 5:12 Then they asked him, Who is the man who said to you, Take
up your bed and walk?
Joh 5:13 And he did not know Him who had cured him, for Jesus had
moved away, a crowd being in the place.
Joh 5:14 Afterward Jesus found him in the temple and said to him,
Behold, you are made whole. Sin no more lest a worse thing come to
you.
Joh 5:15 The man departed and told the Jews that it was Jesus who
had made him whole.

Luk 5:1 One day Jesus was standing on the shore of Lake Gennesaret
while the people pushed their way up to him to listen to the word of
God.
Luk 5:2 He saw two boats pulled up on the beach; the fishermen had
left them and were washing the nets.
Luk 5:3 Jesus got into one of the boats---it belonged to Simon---and
asked him to push off a little from the shore. Jesus sat in the boat and
taught the crowd.
Luk 5:4 When he finished speaking, he said to Simon, "Push the boat
out further to the deep water, and you and your partners let down
your nets for a catch."
Luk 5:5 "Master," Simon answered, "we worked hard all night long
and caught nothing. But if you say so, I will let down the nets."
Luk 5:6 They let them down and caught such a large number of fish
that the nets were about to break.
Luk 5:7 So they motioned to their partners in the other boat to come
and help them. They came and filled both boats so full of fish that the
boats were about to sink.

SPEEDY INTERVENTION!
Prayer Points Posted on the 17th March, 2014

Text: Acts 12:1-15 (GNB)

Act 12:1 About this time King Herod began to persecute some
members of the church.
Act 12:2 He had James, the brother of John, put to death by the
sword.
Act 12:3 When he saw that this pleased the Jews, he went ahead and
had Peter arrested. (This happened during the time of the Festival of
Unleavened Bread.)
Act 12:4 After his arrest Peter was put in jail, where he was handed
over to be guarded by four groups of four soldiers each. Herod planned
to put him on trial in public after Passover.
Act 12:5 So Peter was kept in jail, but the people of the church were
praying earnestly to God for him.
Act 12:6 The night before Herod was going to bring him out to the
people, Peter was sleeping between two guards. He was tied with two
chains, and there were guards on duty at the prison gate.
Act 12:7 Suddenly an angel of the Lord stood there, and a light shone
in the cell. The angel shook Peter by the shoulder, woke him up, and
said, "Hurry! Get up!" At once the chains fell off Peter's hands.
Act 12:8 Then the angel said, "Tighten your belt and put on your
sandals." Peter did so, and the angel said, "Put your cloak around you
and come with me."
Act 12:9 Peter followed him out of the prison, not knowing, however,
if what the angel was doing was real; he thought he was seeing a
vision.
Act 12:10 They passed by the first guard station and then the second,
and came at last to the iron gate that opens into the city. The gate
opened for them by itself, and they went out. They walked down a
street, and suddenly the angel left Peter.
Act 12:11 Then Peter realized what had happened to him, and said,
"Now I know that it is really true! The Lord sent his angel to rescue
me from Herod's power and from everything the Jewish people
expected to happen."
Act 12:12 Aware of his situation, he went to the home of Mary, the
mother of John Mark, where many people had gathered and were
praying.
Act 12:13 Peter knocked at the outside door, and a servant named
Rhoda came to answer it.
Act 12:14 She recognized Peter's voice and was so happy that she ran
back in without opening the door, and announced that Peter was
standing outside.
Act 12:15 "You are crazy!" they told her. But she insisted that it was
true. So they answered, "It is his angel."

commanded ravens to bring you food there."

13. Lord, open the door of my supply again!

14. In the name of Jesus, I command my doors to be opened again.
15. Every Dam that has been blocking my brook supply and its flow, let the
hand of heaven break such dam now.
16. Again, Let there be a flow! Peace flow! Power - flow! Ideas flow! Phone
calls to solve my problems flow! Emails to lead me flow! In the name of
Jesus let there be a fresh flow.
17. From the unlikely source, command me help!
18. Lord, I am thirsty give me enough water this eleventh hour!
19. Every raven in whatever shape or form that has been commanded to
meet my needs let the law of divine connection execute the command.

1Ki 17:5 Elijah obeyed the LORD's command, and went and stayed by
Cherith Brook.
1Ki 17:6 He drank water from the brook, and ravens brought him
bread and meat every morning and every evening.

20. Elijah stayed by the brook of cherith - I terminate every force that
prematurely pursue a man from where his blessings are based.
21. Every suffering that has been inflicted on me and my family this year by
chasing us away from our divinely appointed sources this eleventh hour -
reverse it Lord!
22. All he needed was available where he was, Isaac sowed in famine in the
land where he was and he multiplied, I have suffered enough Let the
anointing of the 11th hour intervention solve my problem where I am.
23. The Ravens brought his food Lord, feed me for the rest of my life.

1Ki 17:7 After a while the brook dried up because of the lack of rain.
1Ki 17:8 Then the LORD said to Elijah,

24. Deliver me from the spirit of denial, everything I need to acknowledge and
face and fight but I have been living in denial, show me.
25. Every past glory that I am still holding to that is causing stagnancy I let
go!
26. Any achievement that is stale that should be buried for me to move
forward, I bury it now!
27. I have been waiting for the next level instruction after the last brook dried
up, let mercy release it.
28. I will not be a king of the past! I will be prince for the future in the name
of Jesus.

1Ki 17:9 "Now go to the town of Zarephath, near Sidon, and stay
there. I have commanded a widow who lives there to feed you."

29. Whether from the East, West, North or South - That promised land that
will sort me out, before the end of this year Lead me there!
30. As the Lord lives, from now, I will not beg for bread! In the name of Jesus

FOR IN JESUS NAME WE HAVE PRAYED. AMEN

DYNAMICS OF DIVINE
BREAKTHROUGH!
Prayer Points Posted on the 15th October , 2013

When God want to intervene in the life of a man, he starts with a

Word!

Dan 10:11 And he said unto me, O Daniel, a man greatly beloved,
understand the words that I speak unto thee, and stand upright: for
unto thee am I now sent. And when he had spoken this word unto me,
I stood trembling.
Dan 10:12 Then said he unto me, Fear not, Daniel: for from the first
day that thou didst set thine heart to understand, and to chasten
thyself before thy God, thy words were heard, and I am come for thy
words.
Dan 10:13 But the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me one
and twenty days: but, lo, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to
help me; and I remained there with the kings of Persia.

1. Thank you, Lord because I have hope!

2. I am grateful Daddy because you will step in and my delay will be over.
3. Heavenly Father, send me a word that will change the course of my destiny.

Dan 10:14 Now I am come to make thee understand what shall befall
thy people in the latter days: for yet the vision is for many days.

4. Give me a word that is pregnant pregnant with my destiny and pregnant

with my future.
5. As the Lord lives, my future will not be aborted.
6. Now I have come Lord arrive now in my situation. Lord now!
7. Give me words that will continually bring me breakthroughs for the rest of
my life.

The people of samaria knew the cause of the delay of their

breakthrough but there was little they could do! In their case they
started with the word and the mechanism started.

2Ki 7:1 Then Elisha said, Hear ye the word of the LORD; Thus saith
the LORD, Tomorrow about this time shall a measure of fine flour be
sold for a shekel, and two measures of barley for a shekel, in the gate
of Samaria

Bishop Oyedepo said if it is too big for your mouth, it most likely will
be too big for your destiny.

8. Father in the Name of Jesus, beyond what I see in the negative, I prophesy,
my struggling will end.
9. I decree the end of scarcity of things that gives men joy in my life love,
money, peace, health according to the word of the Lord come in
abundance.

HIS WAYS ARE NOT YOUR WAYS

2Ki 7:3 And there were four leprous men at the entering in of the
gate: and they said one to another, Why sit we here until we die?

10. Lord, surprise me! Before this year ends Lord surprise me.
11. Let my breakthrough this year override my negative status.
12. Lord, use my story to confound the world!
13. Send me help from outside the city where the key to my breakthrough
reside locate and activate it.
14. Now I may be treated as an outcast send me breakthroughs that will
change my status.
15. Let me be the contact that will be bring change to my generation.

BREAKTHROUGHS START WITH CONVERSATIONS AND QUESTIONS

16. Help me Lord to ask questions that will bring my breakthrough.

17. Let me not keep seating when I should be acting? Every force that is
striving to keep me down be terminated in Jesus Name.
18. Ruffle my weather Lord that I may make changes.

BREAKTHROUGHS MAY DEMAND RISK TAKING

2Ki 7:4 If we say, We will enter into the city, then the famine is in the
city, and we shall die there: and if we sit still here, we die also. Now
therefore come, and let us fall unto the host of the Syrians: if they
save us alive, we shall live; and if they kill us, we shall but die.

19. Daddy, change my spiritual eye lenses to see beyond the risk and make
the move towards my breakthrough
20. In midst of hard options, let your favor do that which is best for me.

WHEN IT IS TIME FOR BREAKTHROUGH, THERE IS NO PLACE FOR

DELAY

2Ki 7:5 And they rose up in the twilight, to go unto the camp of the
Syrians: and when they were come to the uttermost part of the camp
of Syria, behold, there was no man there.

21. Lord before my breakthrough, let me not breakdown.

22. My father, during my breakthrough, let me not slack!
23. After my breakthrough cycle, give me the grace to be vigilant and let my
breakthrough be permanent!
WHEN GOD DOES IT, HE DOES IT IN A WAY NO MAN CAN TAKE HIS
GLORY

2Ki 7:6 For the Lord had made the host of the Syrians to hear a noise
of chariots, and a noise of horses, even the noise of a great host: and
they said one to another, Lo, the king of Israel hath hired against us
the kings of the Hittites, and the kings of the Egyptians, to come upon
us.
2Ki 7:7 Wherefore they arose and fled in the twilight, and left their
tents, and their horses, and their asses, even the camp as it was, and
fled for their life.

24. Lord, make it happen for me too!

25. When the list of great men and men with uncommon breakthroughs are
compiled this year, let my name not be excluded.
26. Every stronghold that has caused a siege against me and my destiny,
Lord, Harrass them and cause them to flee.
27. In the name of Jesus, I command you spirit of failure to let go of me!

ABUNDANT BREAKTHROUGH HAS GOT NOTHING TO DO WITH YOU

CURRENT LACK

2Ki 7:8 And when these lepers came to the uttermost part of the
camp, they went into one tent, and did eat and drink, and carried
thence silver, and gold, and raiment, and went and hid it; and came
again, and entered into another tent, and carried thence also, and
went and hid it.

28. Finally, I will break through!

29. Finally, I will breakthrough big time.
30. Everything I have not seen nor touch in a long time I will see it and
touch it again.
31. As the Lord lives, there will be enough and left over in Jesus name.

ORIGINAL BREAKTHROUGH IS BIGGER THAN YOU!

2Ki 7:9 Then they said one to another, We do not well: this day is a
day of good tidings, and we hold our peace: if we tarry till the morning
light, some mischief will come upon us: now therefore come, that we
may go and tell the king's household.

32. Lord, I extend my faith send me not common breakthroughs. Send me

breakthrough big enough to bless my generation!
33. Give me breakthrough that I can proudly share publicly!

DIVINE BREAKTHROUGH BRING PROPHECHIES TO PASS

2Ki 7:16 And the people went out, and spoiled the tents of the
Syrians. So a measure of fine flour was sold for a shekel, and two
measures of barley for a shekel, according to the word of the LORD.

33. Daddy, as you have spoken, Let the word come to pass!

IF YOU ARE NOT CAREFUL YOU CAN SEE IT AND NOT PARTICIPATE

2Ki 7:17 And the king appointed the lord on whose hand he leaned to
have the charge of the gate: and the people trode upon him in the
gate, and he died, as the man of God had said, who spake when the
king came down to him.

34. I will not only see it, I will partake in Jesus Name!
35. I pray that every enemy of progress around me do not die but be alive to
witness what you will do. After that, if they refuse to repent they can go!

36. Thank you Lord because my breakthrough is here.

FOR WE HAVE PRAYED IN JESUS NAME.

"I will be remembered and...." Remember me Oh lord Prayer meeting 20th

September,2013

When God remembers, He operates in certain ways.

A. He gives you a new thing

He gives you what you have not seen, or touched or experienced before.

1 Sam 1:19-20 And they rose up in the morning early, and worshiped
before Jehovah, and returned, and came to their house to Ramah. And
Elkanah knew Hannah his wife, and Jehovah remembered
her. Wherefore it came to pass, when the time was come about after
Hannah had conceived, that she bare a son, and called his name
Samuel, saying, Because I have asked him of the LORD.

This has different dimensions.

Sight
1. Remember me Lord, whatever or wherever or whoever New place or thing
(country, town, opportunity etc) I need to see that my joy may be full, let me
see it this year.

Touch
2. Remember me Lord, whatever or wherever or whoever New place or thing
to touch (baby, employment letter, new car keys, my own wedding bridal
gown etc) here are my hands, take them and let them touch them.

Knowledge
3. Remember me Lord, whatever or wherever or whoever New place or thing
I need to know (revelation, training, secret etc), open the well of wisdoms
unto me.

Speech and Song

4. By the anointing that brings remembrance, before this year runs out, I will
sing a new song.
4b. Lord do something that will change my language for good!

Garment
Luk 15:22 But the father said to his servants, Bring forth the best robe, and
put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet:
5. By the reason of the anointing that brings remembrance, before this year
runs out, I will wear a new garment.

6. Lord, turn my season around that I can carry your authority and execute
your counsel.
7. Remember me that my phones will ring again with good news, remember
me again that I may have somewhere productive to go!
B. He uses remembrance to kickstart change. He makes up for lost
time. He reverses time.

Exo_2:24 And God heard their groaning, and God remembered his
covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob. 25 And God
looked upon the children of Israel, and God had respect unto them.

8. Lord remember me and hear my cries.

9. Lord remember me and free me from all internal and external opposition.
10. Lord your compassion never fails, let me walk in your compassion and sort
me out.

Gen_21:17 And God heard the voice of the lad; and the angel of God
called to Hagar out of heaven, and said unto her, What aileth thee,
Hagar? fear not; for God hath heard the voice of the lad where he is.
Gen 21:18 Arise, lift up the lad, and hold him in thine hand; for I will
make him a great nation.
Gen 21:19 And God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water;
and she went, and filled the bottle with water, and gave the lad drink.

11. Remember me and release the forces of heaven to help me!

12. My father I am tired of walking helter skelter. Hear my voice where I am!
Lord! here and right now, give me rest.
13. Remember me that I may arise!
14. All that I have and all that I am, I give back to you, let your mercy start
a new process on my behalf.
15. Remember me that I may see where my solution is.
16. As the Lord liveth, every good thing that gives me Joy will not die in my
hand.

C. He uses mercy in abundance

You may not deserve it. You may not earn it. No one in your background or
family history has ever received such grace but when you are remembered,
you experience mercy.

Ps 106:45 And he remembered for them his covenant, and repented

according to the multitude of his mercies.

17. I may not deserve help because of my past, show me mercy, let mercy
bring me help!
18. I dont want a token, I want to experience a shower of your mercy.
Neh 13: 22 And I commanded the Levites that they should cleanse
themselves, and that they should come and keep the gates, to sanctify
the sabbath day. Remember me, O my God, concerning this also, and
spare me according to the greatness of thy mercy.

19. My father, remember me, spare me and show me mercy.

20. Lord let the standard of your remembrance be a function of your mercy.
21. Let the greatness of your mercy make me great.

Luke 23:42 And he said to Jesus, Lord, remember me when You come
into Your kingdom.

43 And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, Today shalt thou be with
me in paradise.

22. Remember me Lord that judgement will not prevail over my destiny
23. Whatever the judgement is, "today" Lord reverse it.

Gen 8:1 And God remembered Noah, and every living thing, and all
the cattle that was with him in the ark: and God made a wind to pass
over the earth, and the waters asswaged;

24. Remember me that the flood of evil recurrent events will cease.
25. Let the power of your remembrance blow the wind of change into my life.
26. Remember me such that every living thing dependent on me will not
suffer.
27. Remember me divine helper in your mercy so I may be lifted.

D. He gives one more chance

Samson is a very good example of remembrance

He never writes off his covenant
28. Lord don't write me off. Lord remember your covenant.

1 Samuel 16:20 and shouted, "Samson, the Philistines are attacking!"

Samson woke up and thought, "I'll break loose and escape, just as I
always do." He did not realize that the LORD had stopped helping him.

29. Lord wherever I messed up. Let mercy prevail and restore me.
30. Help me again o lord. Remember me and help me again.
31. You left Samson and he became useless. Lord visit me again. I need your
presence. Lord I need it now.
1 Samuel 16:28 Samson prayed, "Please remember me, LORD God.
The Philistines poked out my eyes, but make me strong one last time,
so I can take revenge for at least one of my eyes!"

32. Lord, remove my shame - forever and permanently.

33. Remember me and Restore my eyesight.
34. Vengeance is yours, fight for me.
35. When this chance comes, let me not waste it again.

Despite the human assessment of how his story ended, He completed his
mandate.

1 Samuel 16:30 And Samson said, Let me die with the Philistines. And
he bowed himself with all his might; and the house fell upon the lords,
and upon all the people that were therein. So the dead which he slew
at his death were more than they which he slew in his life.

Remember, his life mandate was to deliver from the philistines

36.Lord, remember me that I may finish well!

37. Lord, remember me so that I will do more at my end than at my beginning!

DIVINE COMPLETION
Posted on the 4th August , 2013

TEXT: PHIL 1: 6, John 11:34-44

KJV -Php 1:6 Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath
begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:
GNB - Php 1:6 And so I am sure that God, who began this good work
in you, will carry it on until it is finished on the Day of Christ Jesus.

1. Lord, that you because whatever you start you will complete.
2. I am grateful because you are never tired of me and my issues.
3. My Father, all the glory for the completion of the great things you have
done in my life belong to you.
4. I reiterate that my confidence in you will not die.
5. Only you know what is best for me, Lord! Implement it with uncommon
accuracy.
6. Please keep performing your wonders in my life, ministry and home.
7. Whatever you have started with us will not be aborted in Jesus Name.
8. Daddy whatever you are causing to grow will not die in Jesus Name.
9. Give me the grace to fulfil your intents and purposes for my life in Jesus
Name.

Joh 11:34 And said, Where have ye laid him? They said unto him,
Lord, come and see.

10. Jesus initiated change once He asked that question. Initiate a change
through an accurate question in my life
11. Let the laws of life go into kinetic motion once that question is asked.
12. Lord any question I need to answer for my destiny not to be pre-maturely
terminated make me face it and answer it.
13. Like Blind Bartimeaus answered your question and light came into His life
for good. Send light into my life so that I may progress!
14. They said, Come and see. This is my life! This is my home! Aye mi re!
ile mi re! Owo mi re! Ori mi re! ese mi re! This is my pain! Even though the
process has started, this is still my constraint! come and see!
15. Anything in my past that will not allow me to enjoy the fruits of this labor
that you are blessing uproot it!

Joh 11:39 Jesus said, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of
him that was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time he stinketh: for
he hath been dead four days.
Joh 16:24 Until now you have not asked for anything in my name; ask
and you will receive, so that your happiness may be complete

16. Father, remove every stumbling block to the fullness of my joy this year!
17. Despite the smell that is still permeating my life, home, business that is
still making me an outcast, Lord roll away the stone that Heaven might access
the cause of the rot!
18. Lord! I ask for rest so that my joy will be full.
19. As the Lord lives, irrespective of what I see my joy will be full

Joh 11:40 Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou
wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God?

20. I believe Lord! I believe, Show me your complete glory.

21. Lord, when you finish with me, for your glory, show my enemies that there
is a God that helps men.

Joh 11:41 Then they took away the stone from the place where the
dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank
thee that thou hast heard me.

22. Despite the smell, men arose to obey you. Despite the repulsion and my
current state, for my sake and for the completion of my testimony, let men
arise and help me.
23. The competition to bless me, the competition to help me to the very end,
let men fall over themselves to supersede themselves to help me.

Joh 11:42 And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of
the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou
hast sent me.

24. Before this year ends, complete something that will make men know that
I am on your side and you are on my side.

David said this in 2 ways

1Sa 17:37 David said moreover, The LORD that delivered me out of
the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me
out of the hand of this Philistine.

25. Lord! Lord! Lord! Deliver me completely from everything that has always
aborted my dream halfway.

1Sa 17:46 This day will the LORD deliver thee into mine hand; and I
will smite thee, and take thine head from thee; and I will give the
carcases of the host of the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the
air, and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth may know
that there is a God in Israel.

26. That I may have peace on every side, deliver every opposition into my
hand and in the name of Jesus I smite and bind every principality that will not
allow me to complete this raise.
27. Show the world that there is a living God in my life.

BONUS PRAYER POINT

Joh 11:43 And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice,
Lazarus, come forth.
1Co 1:28 He chose what the world looks down on and despises and
thinks is nothing, in order to destroy what the world thinks is
important.

Shout like you have never done before!

28. Jesus make me end well and free from shame and in your name I
decree, Let
My healing come forth!
Runaway Husband - call his name e.g Peter come forth!
Health come forth!
Business - come forth!
Admissions come forth!

Joh 11:44 And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot
with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus
saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.

29. Announce it demonstrate it and declare In the name of Jesus, I am

free! Completely! I am free! I am! I am!

TEXT : GENESIS 37: 18-28

Gen 37:18 They saw him in the distance, and before he reached them,
they plotted against him and decided to kill him.
Gen 37:19 They said to one another, "Here comes that dreamer.
Gen 37:20 Come on now, let's kill him and throw his body into one of
the dry wells. We can say that a wild animal killed him. Then we will
see what becomes of his dreams."
Gen 37:21 Reuben heard them and tried to save Joseph. "Let's not
kill him," he said.
Gen 37:22 "Just throw him into this well in the wilderness, but don't
hurt him." He said this, planning to save him from them and send him
back to his father.
Gen 37:23 When Joseph came up to his brothers, they ripped off his
long robe with full sleeves.
Gen 37:24 Then they took him and threw him into the well, which was
dry.
Gen 37:25 While they were eating, they suddenly saw a group of
Ishmaelites traveling from Gilead to Egypt. Their camels were loaded
with spices and resins.
Gen 37:26 Judah said to his brothers, "What will we gain by killing
our brother and covering up the murder?
Gen 37:27 Let's sell him to these Ishmaelites. Then we won't have to
hurt him; after all, he is our brother, our own flesh and blood." His
brothers agreed,
Gen 37:28 and when some Midianite traders came by, the brothers
pulled Joseph out of the well and sold him for twenty pieces of silver
to the Ishmaelites, who took him to Egypt.

Elisha, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the LORD will take away
thy master from thy head to day? And he answered, Yea, I know it;
hold ye your peace.
2Ki 2:6 And Elijah said unto him, Tarry, I pray thee, here; for the
LORD hath sent me to Jordan. And he said, As the LORD liveth, and as
thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. And they two went on.
2Ki 2:7 And fifty men of the sons of the prophets went, and stood to
view afar off: and they two stood by Jordan.
2Ki 2:8 And Elijah took his mantle, and wrapped it together, and
smote the waters, and they were divided hither and thither, so that
they two went over on dry ground.
2Ki 2:9 And it came to pass, when they were gone over, that Elijah
said unto Elisha, Ask what I shall do for thee, before I be taken away
from thee. And Elisha said, I pray thee, let a double portion of thy
spirit be upon me.

thou see me when I am taken from thee, it shall be so unto thee; but
if not, it shall not be so.
2Ki 2:11 And it came to pass, as they still went on, and talked, that,
behold, there appeared a chariot of fire, and horses of fire, and parted
them both asunder; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven.

chariot of Israel, and the horsemen thereof. And he saw him no more:
and he took hold of his own clothes, and rent them in two pieces.

went back, and stood by the bank of Jordan;
2Ki 2:14 And he took the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and

Introduction
Elisha was an ordinary farmer. A commoner. God must have seen
something in him to nominate him to be a replacement for a very
successful Elijah.
However, in order to fulfil this purpose, there are some obstacles he
had to confront and deal with directly or indirectly, knowingly or
subtly!

TEXT : I Kings 19: 16-21, 2:1-25

1Ki 19:16 And Jehu the son of Nimshi shalt thou anoint to be king
over Israel: and Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abelmeholah shalt thou
anoint to be prophet in thy room.
1Ki 19:19 So he departed thence, and found Elisha the son of
Shaphat, who was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen before him, and
he with the twelfth: and Elijah passed by him, and cast his mantle
upon him.
1Ki 19:20 And he left the oxen, and ran after Elijah, and said, Let me,
I pray thee, kiss my father and my mother, and then I will follow thee.
And he said unto him, Go back again: for what have I done to thee?
1Ki 19:21 And he returned back from him, and took a yoke of oxen,
and slew them, and boiled their flesh with the instruments of the
oxen, and gave unto the people, and they did eat. Then he arose, and
went after Elijah, and ministered unto him.

to Bethel.

Finishing Well
2 Timothy 4:7 ESV / 110 helpful votes

I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.

Acts 20:24 ESV / 54 helpful votes

But I do not account my life of any value nor as precious to myself, if only I may finish my
course and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of
God.

1 Corinthians 9:24-27 ESV / 44 helpful votes

Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? So run that
you may obtain it. Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a
perishable wreath, but we an imperishable. So I do not run aimlessly; I do not box as one beating
the air. But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself
should be disqualified.

Hebrews 12:1 ESV / 41 helpful votes

Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every
weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before
us,

Philippians 3:14 ESV / 40 helpful votes

I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

Colossians 1:10-14 ESV / 27 helpful votes

So as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him, bearing fruit in every good
work and increasing in the knowledge of God. May you be strengthened with all power,
according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy, giving thanks to the
Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light. He has delivered
us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom
we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
Luke 14:28-30 ESV / 18 helpful votes

For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he
has enough to complete it? Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all
who see it begin to mock him, saying, This man began to build and was not able to finish.

Philippians 1:6 ESV / 17 helpful votes

And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the

Watch yourselves, so that you may not lose what we have worked for, but may win a full reward.

Hebrews 10:35 ESV / 9 helpful votes

Therefore do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward.

Philippians 3:12-16 ESV / 9 helpful votes

Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own,
because Christ Jesus has made me his own. Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my
own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I
press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. Let those of us
who are mature think this way, and if in anything you think otherwise, God will reveal that also
to you. Only let us hold true to what we have attained.

Luke 14:25-35 ESV / 9 helpful votes

Now great crowds accompanied him, and he turned and said to them, If anyone comes to me
and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes,
and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple. Whoever does not bear his own cross and come
after me cannot be my disciple. For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit
down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it? Otherwise, when he has laid a
foundation and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, ...

For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in
order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers.

Matthew 28:18-20 ESV / 7 helpful votes

And Jesus came and said to them, All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.
Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of
the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And
behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.

Matthew 25:14-30 ESV / 7 helpful votes

For it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted to them his
property. To one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one, to each according to his
ability. Then he went away. He who had received the five talents went at once and traded with
them, and he made five talents more. So also he who had the two talents made two talents more.
But he who had received the one talent went and dug in the ground and hid his master's money.

Ecclesiastes 7:8 ESV / 5 helpful votes

Better is the end of a thing than its beginning, and the patient in spirit is better than the proud in
spirit.

Luke 21:5-38 ESV / 4 helpful votes

And while some were speaking of the temple, how it was adorned with noble stones and
offerings, he said, As for these things that you see, the days will come when there will not be
left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down. And they asked him, Teacher,
when will these things be, and what will be the sign when these things are about to take place?
And he said, See that you are not led astray. For many will come in my name, saying, I am he!
and, The time is at hand! Do not go after them. And when you hear of wars and tumults, do not
be terrified, for these things must first take place, but the end will not be at once. ...

Luke 14:31-33 ESV / 4 helpful votes

Or what king, going out to encounter another king in war, will not sit down first and deliberate
whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand?
And if not, while the other is yet a great way off, he sends a delegation and asks for terms of
peace. So therefore, any one of you who does not renounce all that he has cannot be my disciple.

has gone to Galatia, Titus to Dalmatia.

Ephesians 4:31-32 ESV / 3 helpful votes

has come; glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you, since you have given him authority
over all flesh, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him. And this is eternal life, that
they know you the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. I glorified you on earth,
having accomplished the work that you gave me to do. And now, Father, glorify me in your own
presence with the glory that I had with you before the world existed. ...

One of the Pharisees asked him to eat with him, and he went into the Pharisee's house and took
his place at the table. And behold, a woman of the city, who was a sinner, when she learned that
he was reclining at table in the Pharisee's house, brought an alabaster flask of ointment, and
standing behind him at his feet, weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears and wiped them
with the hair of her head and kissed his feet and anointed them with the ointment. Now when the
Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, If this man were a prophet, he would
have known who and what sort of woman this is who is touching him, for she is a sinner. And
Jesus answering said to him, Simon, I have something to say to you. And he answered, Say it,
Teacher. ...

We had a pilot in our church years ago who flew 747s to Europe from Los
Angeles. And when you get into one of those planes, theres a computer. You punch in
the longitude and latitude of the takeoff, and you punch in the longitude and latitude of
the landing strip, and the plane flies to that. Well, one day, they were up in the air, and
they realized that they were headed for London in their minds, but their airplane was
headed for Brazil. And he, when he realized what was going on, he realized they were
on a deadline for Sao Paolo or Rio, Brazil. And it all happened because of one
mispunch on the computer. And, the difference was massive at the end, though very
small at the beginning.

Its really what you do at the beginning. Its how you set the course at the
beginning. Now, let me just talk to you about some of the things that are important with
regard to this. I want to take you to a scripture in 1 Peter chapter 1. First Peter chapter
1. This verse establishes for us something of this thought that I just planted in your
mind about setting direction. Verse 13. First Peter 1:13. Therefore, gird your minds for
action, keep sober in spirit, fix your hope completely on the grace to be brought to you
at the revelation of Jesus Christ. What does the saying, lets start at the back and go
back to the front, fix your hope completely on the grace to be brought to you at the
revelation of Jesus Christ, start by fixing your direction on meeting Christ. Thats your
goal. You want to be able to meet Christ at the revelation of Christ, unashamed, bold,
hearing well-done, good, and faithful servant. Okay? Thats your long-range
objective. Thats where you want to land your ship. From where you are now, to the
time when the Lord Jesus Christ is revealed to you, and when He rewards His own.

How do you get there? How do you guarantee that that goal will be met? Well, the
beginning of the verse says, gird your mind. This is a pretty simple idea. In ancient
days, they wore tunics and tunics kind of were like a dress, a very loose-fitting
garment. And if you were engaging in any kind of action, any kind of running, any kind
of combat, any kind of labor, anything that required focus and attention, and getting
everything out of your way, you put on a sash, you put on a belt, and you pulled it tight
so that your dress wasnt flying in the breeze. You certainly didnt want to go into war
like that. Thats why in Ephesians 6 when it talks about the armor of the Christian, it
starts with the belt of truth.

Its truthfulness actually, commitment. What ties all the loose ends of your life together
is a commitment that this is a serious endeavor, a serious engagement, a serious task,
and I cant have things flying loose. Pull in all the loose ends of your life. Thats what
Peter says. Prepare your mind to eliminate all entanglements, like Hebrews 12, isnt
it? Laying aside whatever entangles you, the sin that easily entangles you to run the
race that is set before you. Your mind is not just your intellect but all your faculties. Its
a matter of pulling in all the loose ends in all your faculties. Be alert in the mental,
spiritual dimensions of your life.

The language here in the original is to call for a decisive act. Stop letting your thoughts,
your purposes, your decisions hang loose. I hate that phrase. Thats the opposite of
what Peter is talking about, and its a popular phrase. It comes from surfing. Hang
loose. Thats the opposite of what Peter would want you to do. Pull everything up as
tight as you can possibly get it. You dont go through life as a Christian in a leisure
fashion if you intend to hit the goal that youve established, and that is to be pleasing to
the Lord when you see Him face to face.

He adds this in verse 13. Keep sober. Hes not talking about, as opposed to being
drunk, although there are times when that can refer to alcohol. Hes talking about clarity
of mind. Sobermindedness, seriousness. A spiritual steadfastness, self-control,
balanced priorities. A disciplined mind, if you will, that is not intoxicated by the
allurements of the world.

In chapter 5 verse 8 he says the same thing again. Be sober. Be on the

alert. Why? Because your adversary, the devil, prowls about like a roaring lion,
seeking someone to devour. Moral decisiveness. Mental alertness. You cant go
through life recklessly overexposing yourself to the sins of this society and the world
around you. This is spiritual self-discipline. I am profoundly concerned about how
much the culture has encroached upon the church. The evil part of the culture, the
baser elements of the culture have encroached upon the church so significantly that
now, there are many preachers who think its clever to express themselves even in a
pulpit in the baser elements of culture, to become highly familiar with the worst of the
culture, the baser forms of entertainment. To know all the bad television, foul music,
and bad movies, and all their storylines is somehow a way to culturally connect.

No, thats a way to assure yourself that you will not maintain spiritual self-
discipline. You cant overexpose yourself to what is toxic without having it have an
effect on you. Its one thing to have the people in the pew do it and the preacher to
correct them. Its something else for the preacher to identify with that as if theres some
legitimacy to it. You cant identify with outworkings of corruption and then try to speak
against the worldview that is behind it. Spiritual self-discipline is critical. Pulling in the
loose ends of your life, making sure that you think on what is good and holy and just
and true. Philippians 4:8.

So let me give you some practical ways that, through the years, I have thought about
how to do this, okay? And this goes back in my life a long, long time. Number one. If I
want to pull in the loose ends of my life, first of all, I have to remember this: remember
who owns me. Remember who owns me. Who owns me. Acts 20:28 says that God
has purchased the church with His own blood. First Corinthians 6:19 and 20 says
youre not your own; youre bought with a price. Therefore, glorify God in your spirit and
in your body which are Gods. First Peter 1, right where we are, look at verse 14. As
obedient children, do not be conformed to the former lusts which were yours in your
ignorance. Theres the same point I was just making. Stay away from the corruption
you have been saved from. Dont make it, now that youre a Christian, some form of
entertainment or identification with the culture. But rather, like the Holy One who called
you, be holy yourselves also in all your behavior because it is written: You shall be
holy, for I am holy. If you address as Father the One who impartially judges according
to each mans work, conduct yourselves in fear during the time of your stay on earth;
knowing that you were not redeemed or purchased with perishable things like silver or
gold from your futile way of life inherited from your forefathers, but with precious blood,
as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ.

Remember who owns you. You have been bought. You have been purchased. You
have been purchased by the sacrifice of Jesus Christ with precious blood, precious
because Christ is precious. Christ is precious because Christ is perfect, pleasing to the
Father because He is God.

A few months ago, we talked about this idea of being a slave to Christ. Thats the same
essential concept. We have been bought. We are now owned. We are not our
own. We cannot serve two masters, but only one, two masters for a slave would be an
impossibility. We are called to obey everything the Master tells us to do. We are
subject to an alien will. When we dont specifically what He wants us to do, we seek
ways in which we can please Him. He alone has the right to render discipline upon us
and to evaluate us as to reward. We have no protection but what our Master provides
to us, and no provision but what He gives to us. We are slaves. We have been
bought. But, this is a premium kind of slavery because our Master makes us sons, and
joint heirs, and blesses us with all spiritual blessings and heavenlies in Christ Jesus,
and will one day allow us to share everything that is His in the glories of heaven. But
He owns us. My life is not my own. I have been ransomed, and He bought me out of
the slave market. He bought me out of condemnation. He paid the penalty for my sin. I
was under a curse, Galatians 3. He took the curse upon Himself in my place, that I
might be delivered from that curse.

I love that hymn that we were singing because it does express the essence of the
gospel, the last one that we sang, that it is, when it is all said and done, about God and
heaven. I love that last line. Everything else, let it go. Everything else, I would
abandon. Salvation is about God and heaven. You receive God and you receive
heaven. He purchased us for that. So, for me, it really all began long, long ago when I
was your age, and I was a college student, and I came to grips with the fact that my life
was not my own. Its still not my own; it never will be my own. I have been
purchased. I am a slave to Christ, a willing slave.

Secondly, and this is another important focus, I think, for us. If you want to keep
soberminded, if you want to pull in the loose ends of your life and maintain spiritual self-
discipline, you remember who owns you, and secondly, you look back to the covenant
of salvation. You look back to the covenant of salvation. This is a missing element in
preaching today. Its a missing element in evangelism today. Clearly, a missing
element. But when you became a believer, you basically made a vow. You made a
commitment. If you were genuinely saved, you said, I turn from my sin and I submit to
Your lordship, Christ. I accept your sacrifice on my behalf. I acknowledge that I am a
slave, and You are my Master. I give You my life. The entry act of salvation is an act
of obedience because the gospel is a command. Repent. Repent. Believe. God has
commanded all men everywhere to repent. Its a command. You obeyed the
command. Salvation was the initial act of obedience. It is the first true act of obedience
in your life. Prior to that, theres none good, none righteous. Were all
disobedient. Romans 3.

The first act of obedience was obeying the call to believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and to
repent of your sin. And at that point, you were vowing obedience and submission. How
easy it is to forget that original covenant.

Go back to the beginning of 1 Peter 1 for a moment. And Peter, an apostle of Jesus
Christ, is writing to believers residing as aliens scattered around those various
places. Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia. And then, he describes them
this way. Who are chosen, they are the elect, as are all believers. They are elect
according to the foreknowledge of God, the Father, the predetermined identification of
the Father. Then, notice this, by the sanctifying work of the Spirit. You are chosen by
Gods foreknowledge and election. It is the Spirit who sanctifies you. And then this, its
a purpose clause: In order that you may obey Jesus Christ. Its why you were
saved. To obey Jesus Christ.
Thats why, in the Great Commission, our Lord says to His disciples and to all of us, Go
baptize and teach them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you. The
Christian life is not selective in the sense that you pick out the things that youd like to
obey and ignore the ones you dont want to obey. When you came to Christ, you came
at a level of desperation that says, I want God, and I want heaven, and I want
deliverance from hell, and I submit myself to You, deny myself, take up my cross, follow
You. You are my Kurios, my Lord. I am Your slave, your doulos. I submit to You.

If salvation is anything at all, from the standpoint of the sinner, it is a commitment to

obey Jesus Christ. And then Peter says a very interesting thing here in verse 2. And
be sprinkled with His blood. What is that? We are elect, according to the
foreknowledge of God. We are set apart. This is the sanctifying work of the Spirit that
begins in salvation, by the power of the Spirit, in order that we may live a life of
obedience to Jesus Christ. And then he adds, and be sprinkled with His blood.

What is he talking about? Well, hes writing to Jews who would know exactly what he
was talking about. Go back to Exodus 24. Exodus 24. And this is one of the most
interesting occasions I think in the Pentateuch. Moses has the law, and in verse 1, he is
told to Come up to the Lord, you and Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu, and 70 of the elders of
Israel, and worship at a distance. Moses alone, however, shall come near to the Lord,
but they shall not come near, nor shall the people come up with him. Then Moses
came and recounted to the people all the words of the Lord and all the
ordinances. That is, Moses gave the people the law that God had given him.

And notice the response in verse 3: and all the people answered with one voice and
said, All the words which the Lord has spoken we will do! Well, thats a noble
commitment, isnt it? Thats a vow. Its to be expected. God has declared His
commands in the law given to Moses. Moses reiterates those commands to the people,
and they do the only thing that you can possibly do if you desire a relationship with God
and blessing from God. They make a commitment to obey. It is a vow. It is a vow.

So, verse 4, Moses wrote down all the words of the Lord. Then he arose early in the
morning and built an altar at the foot of the mountain with 12 pillars for the 12 tribes of
Israel. And he sent young men of the sons of Israel, and they offered burnt offerings
and sacrificed young bulls as peace offerings to the Lord. And now, follow this: Moses
took half of the blood and put it in basins, and the other half of the blood he sprinkled on
the altar. Then he took the book of the covenant, the law of God, and read it. He had
already recited it to them. Then he had written it down, and now he reads what he has
written down in the hearing of the people; and they said, and heres the second time,
all that the Lord has spoken we will do, and we will be obedient!

This is precisely, legitimately, and honestly what a true conversion is like. You say, Im
done with my sin, I submit to you, O Lord, I will obey. Forgive my sin. Grant me
salvation. I submit to You as my sovereign Lord. Thats, on the surface at least, what
the people were saying. We vow to be obedient.

Then, verse 8. So Moses took the blood and sprinkled it, or sloshed it, on the people,
and said, Behold the blood of the covenant, which the Lord has made with you in
accordance with all those words.

In ancient times when covenants were made, animals were killed and blood was
shed. To seal covenants, the blood was placed upon the people who made the
covenant or the vow. In this case, this blood is collected from these animals that are
slaughtered. And we dont know how many of them were slaughtered, but many, many
of them, for this is a large, large congregation. The blood was put in large, flat
containers, and then sloshed across the heads of the people to symbolize their
commitment to obedience.

Unfortunately, tragically, they didnt keep their promises. Sad. They did not keep their
promises. That whole generation died in the wilderness, as we know.

Now, you can go back to Peter. Peter is saying, borrowing from that, that when you
were saved, chosen by the foreknowledge of God, set apart in salvation by the work of
the Spirit, you were set apart to obey Jesus Christ, and you symbolically were sloshed
with His blood as a symbol of a vow that you made. The primary purpose of sprinkling
the blood was to consecrate the parties. The blood on the altar relates to God, the
blood on the people relates to them. They are dedicating themselves to
obedience. And when we as believers are saved by the sanctifying work of the Spirit,
we are brought into a covenant relationship of obedience to God thats been sealed in
blood. Its as if His blood has been splattered on us. Peters point is that the death of
Christ actually satisfies God, of course, and brings men into a covenant of obedience.

Look down to verse 22. Peter says, You have in obedience to the truth purified your
souls. Hes referring to salvation. Salvation is that moment in your life when you said:
I will obey. I submit. I commit to a life of obedience to Christ. Splatter me with His
blood. What are the keys to discipline day in and day out, commitment that can bring
you to the final end? First, remember who owns you; and secondly, keep the covenant
you made, the covenant of obedience you made at your salvation. The Lord will never
go back on His covenant, but how often we go back on ours. Thirdly, recognize all sin
as a severe violation of God. Recognize all sin as a severe violation of God.

Verse 14. As obedient children, dont be conformed to the former lusts which were
yours in your ignorance, but like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also
in all your behavior; because it is written, this comes from Leviticus, You shall be holy,
for I am holy. If you say you belong to Me, if you say you are Mine, if you say I am your
Father, I am your God, if you say that you desire to honor Me and to worship Me, and to
praise Me, and adore Me, and lift Me up, then you must pursue holiness. Be holy
yourselves, also in all your behavior as the Holy One Himself is holy.

Any failure at that point is a severe violation of a standard of holiness that God has set
in His own perfection. We cant be exactly like the Lord, obviously. We cant be as
perfect as God is perfect. But it can be our goal, as Paul puts it in his letter to the
Corinthians, Cleanse yourselves from all filthiness of the flesh, perfecting holiness in
the fear of God.

You had to see it this way. We dont sin against a creed. We dont sin against an
institution. We dont sin against an expectation. We dont sin against a rule. We sin
against God. Psalm 51, David looking at the horror of his own sin with Bathsheba and
the murder of her husband Uriah says, Against thee, thee only, have I sinned. So, you
see every sin as a severe violation of God, understanding that when you sin, people
may never know. No one will perhaps know that you have violated the law, that youve
broken the law, but you have sinned against God. And if that sin continues and goes
unconfessed, you will experience what David experiences when he says, My life juices
have dried up, and lived in the agony of a guilty conscious until he came to a place of
confession.

Now, theres nothing really mystical about all this. Theres nothing difficult about it. It
just takes some very foundational commitments in our lives to end up where we want to
end up. To remember who owns you, youre not your own. To understand that
everything you do goes back to a covenant you made. You said, Lord, save me, and
Ill follow You. He keeps His side. Do you?

Remember the covenant you made at salvation and understand that every sin is a
personal violation of Gods own holiness, which you bear. The language of the apostle
Paul in 1 Corinthians 6 is pretty stunning. He says this. If youre a believer, and Christ
is in you, and you join yourself to a prostitute, you join Christ to that prostitute. Thats a
staggering thought. If Christ lives in you, you dont go anywhere without Him. And this
is an unfathomable affront to your Savior, to be dragged into sin.

One final thought for you, and Ill let you go, on the maybe practical side. Cultivate
spiritually strengthening habits. Cultivate spiritually strengthening habits. Daily time in
the Word, daily time to meditate on the Word, time in prayer, time in worship. This is
the time to systematically build your convictions. Come to conclusions. Youre in a
perfect place to do that. You can get help in class, you can get help personally from
folks, you can bounce off each other. This is the time to build the convictions that are
going to be the pillars of your life. Decide what you believe. Decide what you genuinely
believe, because when you really believe it, it becomes a conviction and people operate
off their convictions.

If youre content to resolve nothing, youre in big trouble. If youre content to resolve
some things, and not all things, you could be in trouble. Build a firm foundation of
convictions about what is true and what is a right understanding of Scripture, and what
honors God, and let them become the foundations of your life. Time in the Word, time
in meditation, time in prayer, time in worship, time to build your convictions, read
whatever you need to read, ask the questions, discuss, so that your convictions become
strong.
And then, even on a personal level, I found that when I was a kid, I struggled a little bit
with the self-discipline. My parents didnt know anything about ADHD or whatever that
is, or whatever they call it. But I was the most inattentive, distracted kid ever. I know
that my teachers thought I was hopeless. And had there been medication, they
wouldve prescribed it for me very early on, because I had a severe deficit in attention,
Ill put it that way. And, as my life began to unfold in my teenage years, my dad began
to take it upon himself to endeavor to put some discipline in my life. And little by little, I
began to try to put some things into my life that would harness me a little bit. Simple
things like, if I have a task, if I have a series of tasks to do, always do the hard one
first. Always do the hardest one first. I still do that. I have to prepare a Sunday
morning sermon, a Sunday evening sermon. I have to decide which is the more difficult
one. Thats the one I do first. If I have conflicts to resolve somewhere, I have three
different things I need to deal with. Whatever the more difficult one is, is the one I do
first. Make a schedule, either in your mind, or on paper, or somewhere, and learn to
stick to the schedule. Thats going to make a huge difference in how effective and
impactful your life is in the future.

Clean your environment. Its a good place to test your ability to pull loose things
together. Wean yourself of always having to be entertained. Wean yourself of always
having to be entertained. Another way of saying that is: dont go to the movie. Read a
good book. Accept correction and embrace it. Finish what you start. Volunteer when
somebody needs a volunteer, and fit it in. Say no when you can say yes, just to prove
to yourself you can say no. I mean, you know, when they throw that massive banana
split or whatever it is in front of you, you could eat it. But once in a while, just say, No,
just to prove youre still in control of banana splits, at least. Its just good to maintain
some control in your life. There are a lot of little things you can do like that. Learn to
make difficult choices on principle, not emotion, or external pressure.

These are some things you can think about a little bit as you kind of process this. But
the main things, of course, we talked about, are those spiritual things that are
foundational to making sure that someday in the future, youre going to look back and
say, you know, when I was very young, once upon a time, and its hard for you to
comprehend this, I was very young once upon a time. I set some things in motion, and
by the grace of God, Im ready to stand before the Lord now at that time of His
revelation and know that I can be unashamed because Ive arrived at the destination
that I established at the beginning, by His grace, and through the means of His grace
applied in my life. Lets pray together.

Father, were just grateful that You can make anything out of us. Were really in awe of
the fact that we can be useful to You in that eternal enterprise of redemption which is
unfolding in the world. And Lord, we do want to be useful. We want to enjoy the fullest
eternal blessing that comes for obedience. We want the richest that heaven has to give
to us. We dont want to lose any reward that we have wrought. Lord, protect these
young people, I pray, and keep them on the right course in the right direction to the right
destination: the revelation of Jesus Christ, to arrive there with joy, without being
ashamed, with eagerness to receive what You have for the faithful servant. May they
make the decisions here and now that set that in motion and just patiently and faithfully,
day by day, so live that when its all over, they can look back with joy and gratitude, that
You have used the means of grace that Youve given to us to bring us to fullness and
fulfillment in serving and honoring You. Pray for every person here, to that end, that
their life would be a glory and an honor to You to the very finish, though it may be many
years from now. Be honored in all of us, we pray. Thats our desire. You are
worthy. In Christs name, Amen.

BIBLICAL PRINCIPLES AND LIFE APPLICATION III

- FINISHING STRONG

uke 12: 35-40 (Amplified) "And be like men (women) who are waiting for their master to return home
from the marriage feast, so that when he returns from the wedding and comes and knocks, they may
open to him immediately. Blessed (happy, fortunate) are those servants whom the master finds awake
and alert and watching when he comes. Truly I say to you, he will gird himself and have them recline at
table and will come and serve them.

If he comes in the second (before midnight) or the third watch (after midnight), and finds them so, blessed are
those servants.

But of this be assured: if the householder had known at what time the burglar was coming, he would have been
awake and alert and watching and would not have permitted his house to be dug through and broken into.

You must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour and a moment when you do not anticipate it"

Jesus had been teaching his disciples on various subjects and in the particular teaching above, He was emphasizing
to them about not taking their earthly journey for granted. He told them to watch carefully, lest a burglar creep in to
steal their blessings.

Principle: There are life journeys! Watch for burglars! And finish strong.
When a child is born in the Yoruba culture, that child is welcomed into the world with a ceremony, and ingredients
like salt (signifying sweetness in life), kola-nut (signifying long life), Palm oil (signifying a calm life) among other
stuff are put in the child's tongue, at the end of the ceremony the child is welcomed into the journey of life.

Life's journey

The journey includes

Navigating the dynamics of existing environment (Family or Country)

Education (primary to post-secondary)
Marriage and raising own family
Religion

A child born in Ibadan, Nigeria into a polygamous home advertisement

would definitely see life's journey differently from
another child born in Omaha, NE, USA. Growing up in
Nigeria, we were told that a child eating too much meat
is a recipe for stealing (did you hear that too?), in
America kids are taking to a buffet restaurant every
Sunday for "Steak". A child born in southern Sudan, who
is now a teenager or young adult has never known peace
or prosperity, compare that young person to a another
young man of the same age born in London, England
who has only read about wars in books. A child born into
wealth in Seattle, Washington will see life differently
from a child born in the slum of Port-au-Prince, Haiti.

Education also presents another journey of life. Without

education or the ability to read and write, one's life's
journey is hindered. Education was the way women were
made subservient, it was also the way slaves were kept
from knowing their rights. With a certain level of education (at least a bachelor's degree), one is assured of above
poverty level lifestyle. Professional degrees (physicians, attorneys, pharmacist, architect etc) put an individual in a
position in life to be self-employed.

Marriage is a journey that most people in the world would embark on, The choice of a life partner (wife or husband)
is the most important decision any human can make (second to salvation), because according to the Bible God does
not want divorce, so making the right choice the first time is very critical. Marriage is a very bumpy ride especially
when the Bible promises you that already (1 Corinthians 7: 28). Then you add children rearing into the mix, and the
various planning you have to do.

As a young man, I hear my maternal grandma sing this song in Yoruba very often "Igbagbo iya ko gba omo la o, bo
lo oyami" (the faith of a mother does not save a child, so if you are not going with me child, excuse me I'll be
walking my own faith journey). Many of us had strong spiritual background while many did not, however, those
who grew up in church and those who did not will have to make their own decision regarding faith and who they
will serve.

The life's journeys I have described (briefly) above have many things in common.

They determine the individual's purpose of the journey and the choices made often affect the individual to
at least his/her fourth generations. An educated man would usually preach that to his children. A woman of
faith would teach her faith (and pray) to her children and grandchildren. The family we are born in, the
experiences we grew up with and society to a very large extent (other than genetics) determines how we
view life. A girl who saw Dad physically abuse mom, would either see it as normal or be very defensive in
marriage.
Each of the races (or journeys), although they are separate, they are also inter-woven, each come with ups
and down at some point in the journey. A good marriage would have it's time of testing, life itself come
with valleys and mountain top experiences. I remember many students asked to withdraw from Ife
University; some went to another school and some had their education cut short, I also know many that
spent what seem like an eternity at the university.

Although, I was born in church, I had that period in my life that I hated church and did not go for a while and at
God's appointed time, I started searching on my own and I came back to my heritage (this time for me, not for
mom).

Burglars or Obstacles

There are many obstacles or what Jesus called burglars that would hinder many of us from not finishing the races set
before us and for many people not finish strong would be their problem after a great start.

Some obstacles are, Self, the Enemy (Satan), and the world system.

Self

The bible refer to this many times as "flesh", in my opinion the flesh is more of an obstacle than Satan. When we
feed our flesh more than the spirit then we exhibit fleshy attributes like, sexual immorality (adultery, fornication),
anger and fits of rage, un-forgiveness, envy or jealousy, selfish ambition, hatred, revenge and many more fleshy
attributes. These attributes keeps us away from God.

Flesh makes you want the car or LCD screen that your neighbor has without being able to afford it or to be content
with what you've got, self is what makes you look at another woman and think "her husband must be enjoying her"
when your own wife is beside you. Self is what make you say, I can't respect my husband because he is not living up
to "my" standard. Self is what makes you blame every one else for your problems rather than look inward, accept
responsibility and ask God to help you change.

Flesh makes you see what you should not, or hear what you should not, or go were you should not, or better still
grab what does not belong to you.

The Enemy (Satan)

I have written on this extensively, please feel free to read "the truth about the devil" in the truth series. According to
the Bible, the enemy does not have authority over a believer, except when we give him a legal right to come in, such
legal right includes, unresolved anger, un-forgiveness, adultery, lying, dabbling in occultist or spirits issues.

The enemy is always ready to attack, but is held back when we remain under the shadow of the Almighty, his next
trick is now to lure us out from under the protection of the Almighty. He gradually works on our mind, sometimes
calling bad stuff good (for example, even Christians today don't see anything wrong in co-habiting before marriage),
luring us with temporary solutions in our valley experiences (for example, settling for a good ungodly man rather
than waiting on God's time to be equally yoked).

The world system

The existing world system is headed by Satan himself (Jesus called him the prince of this world). In this world
system, there is no absolute truth; truth is defined by what you think it is. You can define your own marriage as
between two men or two women as long as it works for you. In this world system, self comes first, it's always about
you and this run contrary to what the Bible teaches that we should put our selves last (relationship with God first -
not to be confused with works, others second - wife and children and then yourself, in-fact many times you come
after a whole bunch of people).

This world system gratifies materialism and re-defines wealth to mean financial substance only (even the church is
caught up in this definition). It encourages any thing that tickles your fancy.

Finishing Strong

We have talked about the various journeys that we face in life and the various obstacles or burglars that would make
the journey bumpy, now we will discuss how to finish our journey's well.

It is very important to note that the obstacles serve many purposes in your journey. First, from the enemy's
standpoint it is to make sure you don't finish or finish well and secondly, from God's perspective with each obstacle
you become stronger in faith, emotionally etc (Romans 8: 28). As a prison clergy for 16 years, I have found out that
it takes prison for some people to know God. While studying for my book "the law of undulation" (not yet
published) I discovered that over and over again in the scripture, people who learned the hard way lasted as kings or
endured their race than those who had things handed down to them (explains why over 50% of lottery winners file
bankruptcy or why rich kids blow their inheritance).

To finish each of our life journey strong we need to

1. Have a guideline for life itself - In his instruction to Timothy, Apostle Paul said the following "If you point these
things out to the brothers, you will be a good minister of Christ Jesus, brought up in the truths of the faith and of the
good teaching that you have followed. Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives tales; rather train
yourself to be godly. For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise
for both the present life and the life to come"

As a Christian, I honestly believe this is where a lot of those who are in the faith go on a different track in the
journey. In a recent survey, barna.org said 68% of professed born-again don't believe the bible is infallible (meaning
it may not be right, so they do their own stuff when it feels right). If you don't follow the owner's manual (Every
archeological finding to date has corresponded with what was written in the Bible thousands of years ago - see
materials on Christian apologetics) for your life it's a matter of time before you break down of follow something
else.

It is important to have a set of guidelines as we navigate life's journey, and in my own case, my parents handed me
the Bible. I rediscovered it myself and I'm handing it over to my sons as the owner's manual for life's journey. They
might not always understand it like me, but we also have the Holy Spirit to guide us into all truth.

2. Recognize that obstacles along the way might not necessarily be a bad thing and also how you react during crises
would determine your perspective of life (when down don't stay down get up and keep going). There are Christian
denominations (especially in Africa) that have built their doctrine on imprecatory prayers, when clearly Jesus taught
against it.

I chuckle when I see/hear people pray "shoot the devil.boom boom boom" apart from the fact that the doctrine is
faulty, it leads people astray from their race. Instead on focusing on the power of God, they are too busy magnifying
the power of the enemy. The Bible says when praises go up (not shoot the devil) the Glory of God come down.

If we believe that the enemy cannot touch us, except when allowed or through our sin (even then we have the Grace
of God), then we will be at awe of the power and majesty of God, rather than spend a night binding the devil (the
end of the enemy is already determined at God's own timing Revelation 20: 7-10 - you have the right to rebuke him
in the name of Jesus when he comes into your business - it the name and the blood of Jesus that he fears not your -
boom boom or physical gymnastics). For God to allow the enemy access to a believer, then there might be a lesson
to be learned.
3. Never Quit - Hebrews 12: 1-3 "Therefore, since we are surrounded by great cloud of witnesses (saints of old), let
us throw off everything that hinders, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes
on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame,
and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so
that you will not grow weary and loose heart"

When you seem tired of going to school especially when things get really tough - please don't quit, when your
marriage seem hopeless and there is no more any human can do for you - I beg of you, don't quit, look up unto Jesus
the author and the perfecter of your faith. When the option you have in life seem to be taking your own life, repeat
what David said in that situation "though crying may last for a night, but joy comes in the morning"

The key with not quitting is fixing your eyes on Jesus - when you take your eyes off of Him, you'll see the problem,
remember, as a Christian you are fighting from victory (Christ won already) not for victory.

4. Continually renew your mind - your mind is a battle ground and you have to continually renew it with the word of
God, with good influences and a life that is pleasing to God. I once read the story of an eagle that grew up with
turkeys, and taught she could not fly; rather she walked and ate corn like the turkeys. One day, that eagle saw a band
of eagle flying above and realized that he is not a turkey but an eagle that soars above and not walks beneath. Are
you hanging out with turkeys that are weighing you down, its time to go hang with eagles!

Guide carefully who and what influences you, if you want to finish your race.

Parallel Commentaries
Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary

5:10-14 In conclusion, the apostle prays to God for them, as the God of all grace. Perfect implies
their progress towards perfection. Stablish imports the curing of our natural lightness and
inconstancy. Strengthen has respect to the growth of graces, especially where weakest and
lowest. Settle signifies to fix upon a sure foundation, and may refer to Him who is the
Foundation and Strength of believers. These expressions show that perseverance and progress in
grace are first to be sought after by every Christian. The power of these doctrines on the hearts,
and the fruits in the lives, showed who are partakers of the grace of God. The cherishing and
increase of Christian love, and of affection one to another, is no matter of empty compliment, but
the stamp and badge of Jesus Christ on his followers. Others may have a false peace for a time,
and wicked men may wish for it to themselves and to one another; but theirs is a vain hope, and
will come to nought. All solid peace is founded on Christ, and flows from him.

Pulpit Commentary

Verse 10. - But the God of all grace (comp. 2 Corinthians 1:3, "the God of all comfort"). St.
Peter has finished his exhortations; he has told his readers what they must do; he now bids them
look to God, and tells them where they will find strength. God will work within them both to will
and to do of his good pleasure; for he is the God of all grace. All that grace by which we are
saved, without which we can do nothing, comes from him as its Author and Source. Who hath
called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus; rather, who called you... in Christ Jesus. All the
best manuscripts read "you" instead of us. Two of the most ancient omit "Jesus" here. God called
us "in Christ;" that is, through spiritual union with Christ; the glory is promised to these who are
one with Christ; for the glory is Christ's, and his members will share it. The very end and
purpose of our calling was that we might inherit that glory. This is the apostle's great topic of
consolation. After that ye have suffered a while; literally, a little. The word may refer to the
degree, as well as to the duration, of the sufferings. They are transient; the glory is eternal. They
may seem very severe, but they are light in comparison with that "far more exceeding and eternal
weight of glory." Make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you. The manuscripts vary
between the future and the optative in these four verbs; the preponderance of evidence seems in
favor of the future. The emphatic pronoun must not be omitted. Translate therefore, "shall
himself make you perfect." He only can "perfect what is lacking in our faith" (1 Thessalonians
3:10, where the same verb is used); and he will do it. This is our hope and encouragement. The
verb means "to finish, to complete, to repair." It is the word used in the account of the
calling of Peter and Andrew, James and John, by the Sea of Galilee, when the two last were in
the ship with Zebedee their father, mending their nets. God will repair, bring to
completion, what is lacking in the character of his chosen, if they persevere in prayer, if they are
sober and vigilant (comp. 1 Corinthians 1:10; 2 Corinthians 13:11, etc.). Stablish . The
Lord had said to St. Peter, "When thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren" (Luke
22:32); Peter remembers his Master's words. Strengthen . The word occurs only here.
Settle ; literally, "shall ground you, shall give you a firm foundation." "Digna Petro
oratio, 'Confirmat fratres sues,'" says Bengel (comp. Ephesians 3:17; 2 Timothy 2:19; 1
Corinthians 3:11). The word is omitted in the Vatican and Alexandrine Manuscripts; but it is
found in the Sinaitic and other manuscripts and versions, and ought to be retained.

Gill's Exposition of the Entire Bible

But the God of all grace,.... Who has riches of grace, an immense plenty of it in himself, has
treasured up a fulness of grace in his Son; is the author of all the blessings of grace, of electing,
adopting, justifying, pardoning, and regenerating grace; and is the giver of the several graces of
the Spirit, as faith, hope, love, repentance, &c. and of all the supplies of grace; and by this
character is God the Father described as the object of prayer, to encourage souls to come to the
throne of his grace, and pray, and hope for, and expect a sufficiency of his grace in every time of
need; as well as to show that the sufferings of the saints here are but for a while; that they are in
love and kindness; and that they shall certainly enjoy the glory they are called unto by him; and
which is the next thing by which he stands described,

who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Jesus Christ. This "call" is not a mere external one
by the ministry of the word, which is not always effectual and unto salvation; but an internal,
special, and efficacious one, and which is high, holy, heavenly, and unchangeable. The persons
who are the subjects of it are us, whom God has chosen in Christ, and are preserved in him, and
redeemed by him; and who are a select people, and distinguished from others, and yet in
themselves no better than others; nay, often the vilest, meanest, and most contemptible. Some
ancient copies read "you", and so do the Arabic and Ethiopic versions: what they are called to is
"his eternal glory"; that which is glorious in itself, and is signified by what is the most glorious in
this world, as a kingdom, crown, throne, inheritance, &c. and lies in constant and uninterrupted
communion with Father, Son, and Spirit; in a complete vision of the glory of Christ, and in
perfect conformity to him; in a freedom from all evil, and in a full enjoyment of all happiness:
and this is "his", God the Father's; which he has prepared and provided for his people of his own
grace, and which he freely gives unto them, and makes them meet for: and it is "eternal"; it will
last for ever, and never pass away, as does the glory of this world; it is a continuing city, a never
fading inheritance, an eternal weight of glory: and to this the saints are called "by", or "in Jesus
Christ"; the glory they are called to is in his hands; and they themselves, by being called unto it,
appear to be in him, and as such to belong unto him, or are the called of Christ Jesus; and
besides, they are called by him, by his Spirit and grace, and into communion with him, and to the
obtaining of his glory.

After that ye have suffered awhile, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you; some
copies, and also the Vulgate Latin and Ethiopic versions, read these words in the future tense, not
as a prayer, but as a promise, "shall make you perfect", &c. the sense is the same; for if it is a
prayer, it is a prayer in faith, for what shall be done; for God will make his people "perfect": and
which respects not their justification; for in that sense they are perfect already in Christ, their
head, who has perfectly fulfilled the law for them, and fully expiated their sins; has completely
redeemed them, and procured for them the pardon of all their trespasses; and has justified them
from all their iniquities: but their sanctification; for though all grace is implanted in them at once,
yet it is gradually brought to perfection; there is a perfection of parts, of all the parts of the new
man, or creature, but not of degrees; and there is a comparative perfection with respect to
themselves, before conversion, or with respect to hypocrites; for perfection oftentimes means no
other than integrity and sincerity; or with respect to other Christians, who are weaker in
knowledge and experience: and there is a perfection of holiness in Christ, who is their
sanctification, but not in themselves; for every part of the work of grace is imperfect, as faith,
love, knowledge, &c. and sin dwells in them, and they stand in need of fresh supplies of grace;
and even the best of them disclaim perfection, though they greatly desire it, as here the apostle
prays for it; and which shows that, as yet, they had it not, though they will have it hereafter in
heaven, where there will be perfect knowledge, and perfect holiness, and perfect happiness. He
also prays that God would "stablish" them, or believes and promises that he would. The people
of God are in a safe and established state and condition already; they are in the arms of
everlasting love, and in the hands of Christ, and in a sure and inviolable covenant of grace, and
are built on the rock of ages; and are in a state of grace, of justifying, adopting, and sanctifying
grace, from whence they can never finally and totally fall; and yet they are very often unstable in
their hearts and frames, and in the exercise of grace, and discharge of duty, and in their
adherence to the doctrines of the Gospel; and need to be established, and to have a more firm
persuasion of their interest in the love of God, and a more steady view of their standing in Christ,
and the covenant of his grace, and a more lively and comfortable exercise grace on him, and a
more constant discharge of duty, and a more firm and closer adherence to the truths and
ordinances of the Gospel; and they will have a consummate stability in heaven, where are sure
dwelling places. Another petition, or promise, is, that God would "strengthen" them; which
supposes them to be weak and feeble, not as to their state and condition, for their place of
defence is the munition of rocks; nor in the same sense as natural men are, or as they themselves
were before conversion; nor are they all alike weak, some are weaker in faith and knowledge,
and of a more weak and scrupulous conscience than others, and are more easily drawn aside by
corruptions and temptations, and are in greater afflictions: and this is to be understood, not of
bodily, but spiritual strength; that God would strengthen their souls, and the work of his grace in
them, their faith, hope, and love; and strengthen them to perform their duties, to withstand
temptations, oppose their own corruptions, bear the cross, reproaches, and persecutions, and do
their generation work: and he further adds, and "settle" you, or "found" you; not that God would
now lay the foundation, Christ, for he had been laid by him ready in his counsels and decrees,
and in the covenant of his grace, in the mission of him into this world, and by his Spirit in their
hearts; nor that he would afresh lay them on Christ, the foundation, for they were there laid
already, and were safe; but that he would build them up, and settle their faith on this foundation,
that they might be rooted and grounded in the love of God, have a lively sense and firm
persuasion of their interest in it, and be grounded and settled in the faith of the Gospel; be settled
under a Gospel ministry, have a fixed abode in the house of God, enjoy the spiritual provisions
of it, and have fellowship with Christ, and his people here; and at last enter and dwell in the city
which has foundations, where they will be never more subject to wavering, instability, and
inconstancy, and from whence they will never be removed; this will be their last and eternal
settlement: and this will be "after" they have "suffered awhile"; in their bodies, characters, and
estates, through the malice and wickedness of men; and in their souls, from their own
corruptions, the temptations of Satan, and the hidings of God's face; which will be but for a very
little while, for a moment, as it were; these are only the sufferings of this present time, and in the
present evil world; nor are they inconsistent with God being the God of all grace unto them, or
with their being called to eternal glory, the way to which lies through them; and they are the
means of perfecting, establishing, strengthening, and settling them.

Jamieson-Fausset-Brown Bible Commentary

of all grace(Compare 1Pe 4:10). The God to whom as its source all grace is to be referred;
who in grace completes what in grace He began. He from the first "called (so the oldest
manuscripts read for "us") unto (with a view to) glory." He will not let His purpose fall short of
completion. If He does so in punishing, much more in grace. The three are fitly conjoined: the
call, the glory to which we are called, and the way (suffering); the fourth is the ground of the
calling, namely, the grace of God in Christ.

byGreek, "in." Christ is He in virtue of whom, and in union with whom, believers are called to

perfect, &c.The two oldest manuscripts, and Vulgate and Coptic versions, read, "shall perfect
(so that there shall be nothing defective in you), stablish, strengthen," and omit "settle," literally,
"ground," or "fix on a foundation." Alford reads it in spite of the oldest manuscripts The
authority of the latter I prefer; moreover the climax seems to require rather a verb of completing
the work of grace, than, as the Greek means, founding it. The Greek has, "shall HIMSELF
perfect you": though you are called on to watch and resist the foe, God Himself must really do all
in and through you. The same God who begins must Himself complete the work. The Greek for
"stablish" (so as to be "steadfast in the faith," 1Pe 5:9) is the same as "strengthen," Lu 22:32.
Peter has in mind Christ's charge, "When thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren." His
exhortation accords with his name Peter, "Thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build My
Church." "Stablish," so as not to waver. "Strengthen" with might in the inner man by His Spirit,
against the foe.

Five Reasons Christians Fail to Finish the

Course
Scripture Passage:
Luke 14:25-33
Attached audio files:

1. Five Reasons Christians Fail to Finish the Course by David F. Reagan

12.32 MB

Introduction: The Christian life is pictured in the Bible as a race to run; a course to finish. The
Apostle Paul was determined to finish his course with joy and the ministry which he had
received of the Lord (Acts 20:24
). Shortly before his death, he could give this testimony: I have fought a good fight, I have
finished my course, I have kept the faith (2 Timothy 4:7
). Notice, he had finished his course.

Each of you needs to consider two very important truths. 1) God has a course for you. 2) God
wants you to finish your course. How wonderful to realize that God has a specific plan for our
life and that He will help us find and complete that plan. Yet, most Christians do not finish their
course. They hardly even try.

Our passage in Luke 14:28-30

speaks of one who intends to build a tower. Building this tower is like running your race and
finishing your course. Yet, there are many pitfalls. The tower may never get built. By looking at
the necessary ingredients for building this tower, we can see why so many people fail. Here are
five reasons Christians fail to finish their course.

1. NO PURPOSE (Luke 14:28

); Nothing can begin until someone is at least intending to build a tower. Intent points
to a purpose; a desire to accomplish. First, you must have this purpose.
1. This Purpose Must Be For God Not For Self (Proverbs 23:4-5
; Jeremiah 45:5
; Luke 22:24-26
)
2. This Purpose Must Be From God (Acts 9:6
; Colossians 1:1
, 9)
1. Purpose follows salvation (Ephesians 2:8-10
)
2. Caleb wanted his mountain (Joshua 14:12
)
2. NO PLAN (Luke 14:28
); The man who intends to build must now be the one who counteth the cost. He
surveys the situation; calculates the requirements; makes his plans.
1. The Need For a Plan
1. To Find Gods Way (Proverbs 3:5-6
)
2. To Find Gods Timing (Ecclesiastes 3:11
; Isaiah 40:30-31
; Habakkuk 2:3
)
2. The Source of our Plans (Colossians 1:9
; Ephesians 5:17
)
1. Prayer
2. Meditation
3. Counsel
3. NO PREPARATION (Luke 14:29
); Next, the man who would build a tower must lay the foundation. This is the stage of
preparation where the stage is set for the completion of the goal. No foundation; no
tower. This stage may include training, experience, maturity or other forms of laying the
groundwork for the job to be done.
1. We Must Prepare for the Work (Proverbs 24:27
)
2. We Must Prepare for the Winter (Proverbs 30:24-25
)
4. NO PUSH (Luke 14:28
); Now, the builder must put forth the effort to build the tower. This stage is full of
labor and requires faithful and diligent work. Many fail because they just do not want to
work. He that desires the office of a bishop desires a good work (1 Timothy 3:1
).
1. Work with Focus of Mind (Nehemiah 4:6
)
2. Work with All your Might (Ecclesiastes 9:10
)
3. Press Toward the Mark (Philippians 3:13-14
)
5. NO PERSISTENCE (Luke 14:29
, 30); Yet, to finish the tower, one thing yet is needed. The builder must be able to
finish. Some men start many things but finish none. Paul finished his course. Will you
finish yours?
1. We Must Refuse to Faint (Proverbs 24:10
; Galatians 6:9
)
2. We Must Finish by Faith (Hebrews 12:1-3
; 1 Corinthians 15:58
)

Conclusion: We have been looking at the Christian life as one in which we build a tower or
finish a course. Another picture used in the Bible is that of sowing and reaping (Psalm 126:5-6
). In order to reap, we must work the land, sow the seed, care for the plants and refuse to quit.
God promises that those who refuse to faint will eventually, in due season, reap the harvest
(Galatians 6:9
). What would it take for you to fail? Why not just keep on going on for the sake of the Lord?

Better The End Of A Matter

. . . May I not Be A Mirage At The End!

"Better is the end of a thing than the beginning thereof; and the patient in spirit is better than the
proud in spirit. Eccl 7:8"

Beginnings are important, no matter how weak or small. We must never despise the day of small
beginnings. For anything to be, it must first begin. Whatever will become great and end in glory
must first have a beginning. In actual fact, everything has a beginning . . . . everyone . . . . all,
except God!

Beginnings are important and should be good, strong and thorough but the end of a thing
normally overshadows its beginning. The end of a thing by far outweighs its beginning because
the end is the final summation of the impact of a life, a thing or a matter. If the end of a matter is
bad, it is the only impression that men will carry away. If the end is glorious, no matter how
terrible the beginning was, it is also the final impression that men will go with! The end of a
thing is ever current, ever in focus . . . but the beginning is often obscured as history!

"Better is the end of a thing than the beginning thereof . . . !"

Lord, I raise a heart cry today! . . . that I may end my race well and in your very will

Several kings in Israel started well, laboured hard but their end was in backsliding and
compromise. Several preachers started out gloriously and moved their generations for God bur
their end was in shame and shambles. They spoilt their entire course of life with a bad ending.

They appeared on the horizon with great promise. Their rising brought hope of refreshing to men
and hope of profit to God and His purpose. Men and creation rejoiced at their beginning . . . .
beginning of ministry, of rulership, of marriage, of scholarship etc. but they turned out to be a
mirage!

Lord, I don't want to be a mirage . . . . a supposed pool of water that appears up ahead on the
road in an exceptionally hot afternoon. When men sight it, they rejoice in the hope of a splashing
cooling in the midst of the scorching heat. But it turns out to be a mere reflection of the sun on
the hot tarred surface of the road. The closer you move to it, the farther away it shifts . . . ever
drawing hope but never delivering its promises . . . . until it suddenly vanishes and ends in
nothingness! Lord!
May I not be a mirage!

There are men who have lived like that . . . . dashing the hopes of men who longed to meet God
through them and much more pathetic, . . . . disappointing God's hope of having yet another
friend and delegate in the earth. May my life not be such a disappointment.

Dear Lord, this is a passionate plea today! . . . that I may end my race well, fulfilling your will
and remaining in your very presence!
I want to end well! I want to end still in communion with Thee. I want to end in wisdom, I want
to end still humble and simple! I want to end at Thy feet.

The end is more crucial than my beginnings. How I end my race is far more important than all
the intervening years. It is the final legacy and the cap stone on all my labors that matters. Better
to end well, even if I didn't begin well!

Lord! Help me to end well, better than I've done so far, better than my best moments yet, for . . . .
.

"Better is the end of a thing than the beginning thereof . . . !"
