Unit Overview
Unit Title
Smart Recycle Bin
Unit Summary
Nowadays, from what we can see now, recycle bin has been use wrongly. People are not categorising
the rubbish due to its categories. So do with the schools, every school in Malaysia have their own
recycle bin, blue for paper, brown for glass and orange for plastic and tin. However, student did not use
this recycle bin wisely because they are too lazy to throw the rubbish properly through the colour of the
dustbin.

This project will be fit with Construction and Design learning theory. Due to this theory, students are
needed to create and construct actual models or design plans to create solutions to authentic problems.
They have to construct and design based on real-life needs or can be created by make-believe scenario.
Thus, through this project, students have to create a new technology of a recycle bin in order to solve
the misuse of nowadays recycle bin.

For further information, this project is organized to expose schools children with smart invention in
order to solve problems on current issues. Thus, students are given the role as an inventor and they
are asked to create a recycle bin that can still categorizing the rubbish to its categories although people
are freely throwing their rubbish into the recycle bin. Instead of building the model, students are also
required to make a PowerPoint presentation of their gathered data based on theirs invention, post in on
their own blog and published it by brochure, newsletter or poster as it will presented to the judges
which they are the audience and also to attract their interest. Model will be evaluated on how far the
model is functioning and friendly to user. This project has to be accomplished by three months.

Habits of Learning Taxonomy
Bloom:
1. Recognizing Recognize rubbish that can be recycle.
2. Classifying - Group rubbish (which can be recycled) according to their types (glass, plastic, tin and
paper)
3. Checking - Review a project plan to see if all the necessary steps are included.
4. Planning Design a new recycle bin that can attract people to recycle.
5. Producing - Build a new and attractive recycle bin.

Marzanos:
1. Meaningful Use of Knowledge Students learn best when they need knowledge to accomplish a
goal that is meaningful to them.
2. Productive Habits of Mind - Mental habits that students develop that will enable them to learn on
their own.

Costa and Kalicks:

1. Persisting Ability to sustain a problem solving process over time.
2. Managing Impulsivity - Ability to think before acting, intentionally forming a plan before beginning
a
task.
3. Creating, Imagining, and Innovating - Trying to conceive problem solutions differently,
examining
alternative possibilities from many angles, using analogies,
starting with a vision and working backward, taking risks,
and pushing the boundaries of one's perceived limits
4. Taking Responsible Risks - Accepting confusion, uncertainty, and the higher risks of failure as part
of the normal process. Learning to view setbacks as interesting,
challenging, and growth producing
5. Learning Continuously - Constantly searching for new and better ways, always striving for
improvement, always growing, always learning, and always modifying and
improving themselves.

Assessment Summary
Discussion session strategy is conducted to access students prior knowledge and understanding of
natural resources on waste management. Questioning session on right after the discussion session will
allow student to ask on anything that they do not understand or what they have to do in order to
achieve clear task. Know-Wonder-Learn-How (K-W-L-H) chart are also provided to help students track
their learning related to trade. Frequent discussion allows monitoring and adjusting instruction in a
responsive way. In addition, those discussions also will provided space and chance for students to ask
questions and allow them to openly express their ideas and thoughts as well as enable them to reflect
on other students explanations. Students will be given with the multimedia presentation checklist and
research process checklist, so that students will have guidance in completion of their project. Students
are also provided with multimedia presentation and models project rubric to help and guide them
towards theirs project. Use the same multimedia presentation rubric and models project rubric to
assess students work. In order to assess students model, project testing session will be held for marks
giveaway. Students responses to the reflective question provide information about how students have
connected their work in the unit with broader issues.
