Time:3 hours Max marks:60
Answer any two full questions from each part
PART-A(Module I and II)

1 a. Explain the characteristics of a smart grid. With the help of a schematic diagram, (5)
describe the various building blocks of smart grid based on applications and
systems.

b. What are the energy policies that support smart grid implementation in India? (4)
Discuss the opportunities and barriers with smart grid implementation in India.

2 a. Compare the principle and features of a net meter and a smart meter. Draw and (5)
explain the basic block diagram of a smart meter.

b. Explain the operation of Plug-in hybrid vehicle in vehicle to grid mode. (4)

3 a. Draw and explain the utility communication architecture in Smart grid. (5)

b. How we can achieve home automation in smart grid environment. Explain the (4)
features of smart appliances.

(a) PART-B(Module III and IV)

4 a. What are the factors to be considered while choosing a right protocol? Discuss the (5)
implementation issues with IEC 61850.

b. Explain the factors to be considered for planning substation automation? Describe (4)
the role of geographic information system (GIS) in smart substation?

5 a. Explain the demand side management (DSM) initiatives in India. (5)

b. The maximum demand of a consumer is 4.4 kW and his total energy consumption (4)
is 8760 kWh. If the tariff is Rs.100/kW of maximum demand plus 10 paise/ kWh.
Calculate annual savings of the consumer after adopting load control operations,
which reduces the peak demand from 4.4 Kw to 3.5kW.

6 a. Explain the various load shaping objectives, the methodologies and the technical (5)
challenges in smart grid environment.

b. Formulate an optimisation problem with suitable constraints to achieve load (4)

shifting operations in the domestic sector?

PART-C(Module V and VI)

7 a. What are the considerations to be taken when load frequency control is to be used (6)
in Microgrids which may work either in grid connected mode or islanded mode?

b. Explain a method for load frequency control in Microgrid. (6)

8 a. How reactive power control and management is realised in smart grid (6)
environment?

b. Describe a method for reactive power compensation in smart distribution system. (6)

9 Consider the smart metering network shown in figure. It is proposed to use (12)
ZigBee for the communication network. Considering the distances given, propose
a suitable ZigBee communication network for this scheme.
