Lesson Title: Problems that Involves Variation Class Schedule:

LEARNING TARGET/OBJECTIVES: At the end of the lesson the students CAN:

Solve problems involving variation by:
a. Identifying what is asked and the given in the problem
b. Determining the type of variation (direct or inverse) involved in the given
problem
c. Deriving an equation to solve the problem
d. Make a conclusion based on the given problem

CONCEPT NOTES:

Illustrative Example 1:

The amount of money raised at a school fundraiser is directly proportional to the

number of people who attend. Last year, the amount of money raised for 100
attendees was Php2500. How much money will be raised if 1000 people
attend this year?

What is asked? How much money will be raised if 1000 people attend this year?
What are the given? The amount of money raised is directly proportional to the number of
people who attend. Mathematically, we have:
Let y be the amount of money raised x be the number of attendees
Type of Variation Since the problem states that the amount of money is directly
proportional to the number of attendees therefore, it is DIRECT
Formula VARIATION
y=kx
Substituting the values to the formula we have:
2500=(k )(100)
Solve 2500 ( k )( 100 )
Then solve for k = So we have,
100 100
k =25
Thus, plugging the new x and the value of k we have to the
original formula we have the following
y=25 x y=( 25 )( 1000 ) y=25,000
Make a conclusion (based Therefore, if 1000 people will attend then Php25, 000 will be raised!
on what is asked in the
problem)

Illustrative Example 2:

For the Choir fundraiser, the number of tickets Allie can buy is inversely
What is asked? How many tickets can Allie buy if each cost Php3?
proportional to the price of the tickets. She can afford 15 tickets that cost Php5
What are the given? The number of tickets is inversely proportional to the price of tickets.
each. How many tickets can Allie buy we
Mathematically, if each
have:cost Php3?
Let y be the number of tickets Allie can buy x be the price of tickets

Type of Variation Since the problem states that the number of tickets Allie can buy is
inversely proportional to the price of tickets therefore, it is INVERSE
VARIATION.
To solve for the value of the k (constant);
k
Formula y x =k y=
x
Substituting the values to the formula we have:
(15)(5)=k
Solve Then solve for k ( 15 ) ( 5 )=k 75=k So we have,
k =7 5
Thus, plugging the new x and the value of k we have to the
original formula we have the following
75 75
y= y= y=25
x 3

Make a conclusion (based on Therefore, if the price of the tickets is Php3 then Allie can buy 25 tickets.

PROCESSING QUESTIONS:
Q1: How did you find the activity?
Q2: What operation did you use to answer the problem?
Q3: What are the mathematical concept did you apply to solve the problems?
Q4: How did you determine the type of variation involved in the given?

SYNTHESIS:
GLASS, BUGS, Mud. In each object write one thing that describes your understanding with the
lesson using the windshield metaphor of clear vision. Glass: totally clear; Bugs: a little fuzzy;
Mud: I can barely see.

LIFE-LONG LEARNING ACTIVITY:

Today you have learned how to solve problems that involves variation by following
the problem solving process presented. Also, you are able to identify the type of
variation involved by looking at the key phrases that determines each variation. Just
like in decision making, you sometimes look for various signs that will somehow
help assess certain problem or situation you are in. In the same manner, cite an
experience wherein signs helped you in making decision or the other way around
and what have you realized after.
