Choose the correct answer a, b, c or d.

A new hearing device is now available for some hearing-impaired people. This device uses a
magnet to hold the detachable sound-processing portion in place. Like other aids, it converts sound
into vibration. But it is unique in that it can transmit the vibrations directly to the magnet and then
to the inner ear. This produces a clearer sound. The new device will not help all hearing-impaired
people - only those with a hearing loss caused by infection or some other problem in the inner ear. It
will probably help no more than 20 percent of all people with hearing problems. Those people who
have persistent ear infections, however, should find relief and restored hearing with the new device.

1. The article informs us about a new device that… :

a is the best hearing device ever invented.
b will help all hearing-impaired people in the world.
c is efficient due to its detachable magnet.
d will help only some people with hearing problems

2. The new hearing device will … :

a be efficient with people suffering from ear infections.
b be available at a 20 percent lower price than others.
c be accessible to 20 people with hearing problems.
d be efficient because ear infections are not persistent.

Choose the correct answer a, b, c or d.

Stress is with us all the time. It comes from mental or emotional activity as well as physical
activity. It is unique and personal to each of us. So personal, in fact, that what may be relaxing to
one person may be stressful to another. For example, if you're a busy executive who likes to keep
occupied all of the time, "taking it easy" at the beach on a beautiful day may feel extremely
frustrating, nonproductive, and upsetting. You may be emotionally distressed from "doing nothing."
Too much emotional stress can cause physical illnesses such as high blood pressure, ulcers, or even
heart disease. Physical stress from work or exercise is not likely to cause such ailments. The truth is
that physical exercise can help you to relax and to better handle your mental or emotional stress.

1. The article informs us that stress…:
a caused by mental activities is only responsible for business people.
b may have various reasons and causes a series of diseases different from person to person.
c caused by high blood pressure and heart diseases is upsetting.
d may cause relaxation to some individuals while others feel frustrated and tired.

2. Emotional stress is responsible for…:

a the mental alienation of some people.
b the physical deterioration of some individuals.
c unproductive businesses.
d relaxing days at the beach.

3. Business people may feel stressed because …:

a they do not have the time for going to the beach on beautiful days.
b their businesses keep them from doing any physical exercises.
c their high blood pressure or heart diseases are related to money.
d they consider that doing nothing affects their businesses negatively.

In the US, the 16th birthday is called sweet sixteen. It is the age at which a person can get a US
driver’s licence and some parents give their children a car as a present. At 18, in Britain and in the
US, young people become adults and many have a big party. In most parts of the US, 21 is the age
at which people can drink alcohol legally.
Many adults don’t like getting older and a few lie about their age. At about 65 people retire, and
those who have reached this age are called “senior citizens”. Few people live to be 100, so a 100th
birthday is very special. In Britain people reaching this age may receive a card with a printed
message from the Queen.

c 16

c get employed

The anti-smoking campaign in Britain has been fairly effective: we have cut our tobacco
consumption by 25 per cent since 1976 and now have more ex-smokers than any other country in
Europe.
In parts of Africa, however, cigarettes are an icreasingly commonplace commodity.
Cigarette consumption rose by 77 per cent in the 1970s and, in countries where there are a few anti-
smoking campaigners and little legal restriction on the sale of tobacco products, this trend seems
likely to accelerate.
The economic reasons are both simple and familiar: faced with static sales at home, UK and
American-based multinationals are exploiting the Third World market in a cynical campaign. And
we actively subsidize tobacco sales to this vulnerable area.
Currently the EU spends more than £1 million a year on anti-smoking campaigns, but its
subsidies this year to tobacco growers in countries like Greece and Italy amount to round £940
million. Much of the European tobacco mountain is high-tar content, low-quality stuff destined for
sales in the developing world.

b 1970
c 1977

There has been much speculation about the origin of baseball. In 1907 a special commission
decided that the modern game was invented by Abner Doubleday, a West Point cadet, at
Cooperstown, N.Y., in 1839.
It is a matter of record that in the 1700s English boys played a game they called baseball.
Americans have played a kind of baseball since about 1800. At first the American game had
different rules and different names in various parts of the country—town ball, rounders, or one old
cat.
Baseball did not receive a standard set of rules until 1845, when Alexander Cartwright
organized the Knickerbocker Baseball Club of New York City. The rules Cartwright set up for his
nine-player team were widely adopted by other clubs and formed the basis of modern baseball. The
game was played on a "diamond" infield with the bases 90 feet apart. The first team to score 21 runs
was declared the winner. By 1858 the National Association of Base Ball

Players was formed with 25 amateur teams. The Cincinnati Red Stockings began to pay
players in 1869.
