There are quite a few ophiolite complexes * in Hellas which host among other minerals ,
chromites. Collectors when collecting chromite specimens should keep their eyes open to see if
there are green minerals on their chromite specimens . Apart from uvarovite [Ca3Cr2(SiO4)3] ,
Knorringite Mg3Cr2(SiO4)3 , Mariposite [K(Al,Cr)2(Al,Si)4O10(OH)2], you may locate a rare

theophrastite have been collected in the Vermion region of Nomos Emathias in Kentriki
Makedonia. (See arrow in map below for Vermion Mountain area).

*Ophiolites are sections of the oceanic crust and the subjacent upper mantle that have been overthrusted on
to Continental crust or emplaced to be exposed within continental crustal rocks. The scientific terms comes
from the is Greek Ophio for "snake" and lite which means "stone".
The stratigraphic sequence observed in ophiolites corresponds to the lithosphere-forming processes at mid-
oceanic ridges:
Sediments: Muds (black shale) and cherts deposited since the crust formed.
Extrusive sequence: Basaltic pillow lavas show magma/seawater contact.
Sheeted dikes : Vertical, parallel dikes which fed the pillow lavas above.
High level intrusives: Isotropic Gabbro, indicative of fractionated magma chamber.
Layered Gabbro : resulting from settling out of minerals from a magma chamber.
Cumulate peridotite: Dunite-rich layers of minerals that settled out from a magma chamber.
Tectonized peridotite: Harzburgite/lherzolite-rich mantle rock.

GeMin , Your Mineral ,Gem , Jewellery and Fossil Exhibition in

Southeastern Europe.
www.gemin.eu
- Most of major European Mineral, Gem and Fossil shows take place in Western Europe . GeMin
show in Athens ,Hellas , is the unique event of its kind which covers the Mineral, Gem , Jewellery
and Fossil activities , Industry and Earth Sciences and fills the gap in Southeastern Europe.
ORYKTOLOGIKA NEA-NEWS ON MINERALS is widely known that sponsors the GeMin show
since 1987 , but our publication has and will continue to support within its possibilities any effort on
Earth Sciences and especially on Minerals, Gems and Fossils. We always believe that this is the only
way to enhance the Sciences of Mineralogy , Paleontology in the form of hobby as well as enhance
the Gem Industry. It is the least acknowledgement to all those people who look for minerals ,gems
and fossils in the remote areas of the Earth and bring them in front of Collectors at various Shows. It
is the least acknowledgement to all those suppliers of Gem Rough and superb Mineral and Fossil
Specimens from around the World.
One of the most striking features of Athens GeMin show is its substantial sales potential as Hellas
is one of major tourist destinations in the World and apart from collectors in Hellas ,thousands of
collectors come as tourists and buy minerals, gems and fossils. Companies have realized this and so
there is an inflow of material every year in the Market here.
- GeMin show is the most comfortable show in Europe as the organizing Committee takes care for
the comfortness both the Exhibitors and the visitors. A great deal of superb specimens ,gems and
fossils are expected to be on display during 21th GeMin 2007 to be held in Athens on 23-24-25
November 2007 and we invite all to be present in this big event in Athens either as Exhibitors or as
Visitors.
-Another parameter which is seriously taken into consideration by the Organizing Committee of
GeMin is the junior section : The future are the pupils ,the students and in general the younger
generation of collectors ,so schools are urged and invited to visit GeMin ,so young people have the
chance to come across with mineral specimens, gems and fossils but also with educational products
on Earth Sciences.

Trilobites: Extinct Marine Arthropods

The name trilobite is derived from Greek trilobos, three-lobed : tri-, tri- + lobos, lobe.] The name also
arthropods comes from the Greek Words .Specifically Arthropods (Phylum Arthropoda) takes the name from
the Greek , meaning joint and , meaning foot)
Trilobites are often placed in the class Trilobita within the phylum Arthropoda. They flourished during the
Cambrian period about 500 million years ago. The last of the trilobites disappeared in the mass extinction at
the end of the Permian, about 250 million years ago. They are fossils sought most for by collectors. Trilobites
are subdivided into nine orders with thousands of species. The body is composed of three major parts, the
head (cephali ), thorax, and tail (pygidium) and hence the name tri (three , in Greek ) + lobites or lobos
or in Greek) . Most trilobites were apparently bottom-dwellers that filtered mud to obtain food. Their
typical size was two to eight centimeters , although large trilobites up to 70 cm (27 inches) have been found.

Lemon Quartz 173, 60 carats

Lemon quartz is the lemon yellow variety of quartz. It is more lemon in color than a citrine, which has tones
of orange in it. Most of the world supply of lemon quartz comes from Brazil. Sometimes it is considered as
Prasiolite or vermarine which is a green-colored form of quartz, usually produced by artificially heat-treating
amethyst. Sometimes confused with green beryl, peridot (olivine) and yellow tourmaline

wanted to safeguard and share the memories of the place now inextricably wound up with the bauxite
mining process.
