CIVIL ENGINEERING STATISTICS BFC 34303 SECTION 5

Individual Assignment 1: Date: 14/9/2017

58 students have been asked to build an aeroplane from a piece of paper and throw the
aeroplane using:
(a) One hand only (set 1 data);
(b) Both hands (set 2 data).
Then, they have to measure the distance and record the data which consists of 2 sets of
separate data as shown in TABLE 1. Note that the distance in TABLE 1 has been converted from
unit feet to meters.
Using set 1 (One hand only) and Set 2 (Both hands) datasets:
(1) Calculate the mean, median, mode, first and third quartiles, interquartile range and 75 th
percentile.
(2) Compute the sample variance and sample standard deviation.
(3) Compare the mean to the median and then comment on the shape of the distribution.
(4) Construct a stem-and-leaf diagram and state the shortest and longest distance. Then
interpret the distribution.
(5) From the stem-and-leaf diagram constructed in Q(4), construct a Box and Whiskers plot.
Is there any outliers in the data?
Remark: Each dataset need to be analysed separately. Please submit the assignment by
21/09/2017 (Thursday) via email (send to hazlin@uthm.edu.my). Fail to submit on time will
affect your final marks.
