Mentoring meeting:

1. The Board is your boss. It's our job to give you feedback so that you can be successful. You
are doing many things right, but we see you headed down a path that needs to be corrected.

2. You must stop referring to tapping into the Legacy Fund for NexusND or any other project.
Even the Governor has given you this guidance. You must listen. While we agree NexusND
may be a worthwhile project, it is not our priority, and it should not be yours. It will not get
Legacy funding. We are certain of that.

3. The University System, its institutions, and students should be your priorities. We feel you are
expending most of your time and energy on Nexus and not enough on learning all there is to
learn about the system that you are responsible for overseeing. For example, why aren't you in
attendance at the Board subcommittee meetings? That is your job. That is where you learn what
is going on. Why aren't you communicating more with the Board? We need to know what is
going on, and it's up to you to keep us in the loop.

4. The next Legislative session is crucial, and it's critical that you develop and maintain a good
relationship with legislators. We are hearing that they are starting to avoid you because all you
do is talk about Nexus. You should be listening to them about their ideas and concerns, not
trying to convince them to support your pet projects.

5. As we discussed last time, you must treat your staff with respect. That includes listening to
them and their professional advice, as well as practicing basic leadership skills, such as not
referring to their age, gender, marital status, health, weight, political affiliation or personal life in
your conversations with them.
6. As part of your professional development, we are recommending that you participate in an
executive coaching program as soon as possible. Here is the one we're recommending:

7. The MOU discussion.
