Restriction of motorcycles on main roads in Jakarta
Have you ever heard about motorcycles restriction issue in Jakarta? Nowadays, many people and media
talk about that issue. The government planned to reduce road congestion by restricting motorcycles on
some of Jakartas main road. Statistical data in 2016 showed that the growth of motorcycles ownership in
Jakarta is increased by approximately 3.000 per day.

This issue becomes interesting because there are pro and contra. Some people argued that the regulation
discriminates the motorcycles and only favors the car owners. On the other hand, the government said that
the regulation will be followed by other regulations to be applied to the car owners, such as the electronic
road pricing, the parking rate increment, and others. In my point of view, there are several things to be
considered about the health and safety of motorcycle drivers and passengers.

First of all, motorcycle is the most unsafe type of road transportation. It is supported by the statistical data
of Ministry of Health that the numbers of road accident involving motorcycle in Jakarta is no less than 5.000
per day. It was reported that more than half of the accidents result in death. Statistical data of WHO also
has similar result worldwide, that the largest cause of death in road accidents involve motorcycles. It is
clearly shown by the fact that motorcycling is unsafe type of road transportation, with risk of death is at
the brink.

Secondly, travelling by motorcycle reduces quality of life and productivity. It was based on my experience
that most of my patients who use motorcycle for daily transportation suffer from chronic low back pain
and carpal tunnel syndrome. Both of the medical conditions are caused by maintaining the same body
posture for a long period of time, which is the motorcycle driving posture. The posture puts heavy burden
on low back and forearm muscles, resulting in chronic inflammation of the affected muscles, added to the
involvement of nerves in the forearms. The conditions reduce overall quality of life of the patients, as also
hinder daily activities, especially in the workplace. Due to the chronic pain, most motorcycle-using workers
tend to complain more and has lower work productivity compared to the non-motorcycle-using workers.

Thirdly, the largest unsafe act of driving involves motorcycle. It is because of two reasons. The first reason
is the nature of the motorcycle allows the driver to perform maneuver on road, and sometimes at
pedestrian sidewalk to compensate the delay caused by road congestion. The second reason is the
perception of the motorcycle drivers, and sometime also the passengers, that travelling by motorcycle is
simple and at a short distance thus not needing the safety precaution equipment, such as helmets. The
unsafe acts of driving put other road users at risk of accident.

However, it cannot be denied that motorcycle is the most effective, and cheap, type of transportation when
it comes to passing through the congested road. As long as other type of transportation, especially public
transportation, yet to offer shorter travelling time nor cheaper cost.

As summary, there are a few reasons to be considered about the restriction of motorcycles on main roads
in Jakarta. In conclusion, I am convinced that restricting the motorcycles on main roads in Jakarta is good
to be supported. Nevertheless, the government should provide other option of transportation which offers
the same or shorter travelling time and is affordable to most of the road users.
