India, New Zealand ink air services agreement Source.
India and New Zealand have signed an air services agreement in a bid to boost
connectivity, tourism and trade between both countries.
The signing ceremony of the bilateral air services agreement was witnessed by
visiting President Pranab Mukherjee and New Zealand Prime Minister John Key.
The agreement was signed by India Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers
Welfare Dr. Sanjeev Kumar Balyan and Simon Bridges, Minister of Transport and
Minister of Energy and Resources of New Zealand in Auckland.
The agreement is set to improve better connectivity between the two countries
especially for about 23,000 Indian students studying in New Zealand.

First World Humanitarian Summit.
UN to hold first World Humanitarian Summit on 23-24 May in Istanbul, Turkey, is a
global call to action by United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.
The gathering will seek to chart a course with new strategies to address
humanitarian crises and the rising cost of aid efforts.
The Summit will be held at the highest political level possible, including Heads of
States or Government. The Summit will include approximately 5,000 participants
representing global leaders from government, business, aid organizations, civil
society, affected communities and youth, among others.

The eight nations composing the South Asia Initiative to End Violence against
Children (SAIEVAC) are assembling in New Delhi from 9th - 11th May for their 4th
Ministerial Meeting.
To set strategies and agree on commitments to ensure the protection and security
of the children of the region.
SAIEVAC is the Apex Body of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation
(SAARC) created to bring governments of the region into active engagement for child
protection against violence.
SAARC made history in 1986 by installing children as a 'summit-level concern and
commitment'. The forthcoming 4th Ministerial Meeting marks 30 years since that
SAARC summit commitment.

India, U.S. hold first maritime security dialogue.
India and the US launched their first maritime security dialogue with discussions
centering on strategic maritime security issues and maritime challenges in the Asia-
Pacific region.
The issues discussed were Asia-Pacific maritime challenges, naval cooperation, and
multilateral engagement.
The dialogue was one of the several new initiatives agreed between Defence
Minister Manohar Parrikar and his U.S. counterpart Ashton Carter during the visit to
India last month as part of the maritime security objectives under the India-US Joint
Strategic Vision for the Asia-Pacific and Indian Ocean Region.
The other initiatives agreed include the conclusion of a ''white shipping'' technical
arrangement to improve data sharing on commercial shipping traffic and Navy-to-
Navy discussions on submarine safety and anti-submarine warfare.

A new fund ''Education Cannot Wait'' will be launched at UN World Humanitarian
Summit in Istanbul, Turkey. It aims at assisting millions of children whose education
has been disrupted by conflicts and natural disasters.
More than 100 of the world's leading countries, companies and philanthropists will
join forces to create a "major breakthrough" in the effort to assist millions of children
whose education has been disrupted by conflicts and natural disasters.
The fund is the global first and seeks to raise 3.85 billion dollars in next five years
from governments and business.
It is designed to cater the needs of 30 million displaced girls and boys, of which 20
million have no choice at the moment and are unable to go to school.

A two-day International Buddhist conference to remember the 2,560th birth

the conference from May 19-20.
Theme: ''Lumbini, Nepal: the birth place of Lord Buddha and the fountain of

The main objective of organizing the event is to highlight Lumbini as birth place of
Lord Buddha and the fountain of Buddhism, in the international arena, to establish
Lumbini as the centre for interfaith and peace dialogue as well as developing Nepal as
the fountain for world peace.
During the event, the Nepal president Bidya Devi Bhandari will announce the winner
of 'Lord Buddha Peace Prize' worth USD 50,000.

G7 finance summit held in Japan.
The G7 finance summit started in Japan's Sendai city with a focus on boosting and
balancing the growth of the global economy amid the slowing down of the Chinese
economy and those of other emerging countries.
The finance ministers and governors of the central banks of the world's seven most
developed countries met informally in the forum titled 'Future of the Global Economy'
to start the two-day event.
This is the first such meeting where macroeconomic challenges urged and seek
ways to inspire growth and check instability in markets by pooling together
macroeconomic agendas.
Japan, which is currently holding the G7 presidency, has chosen Sendai as the
venue for the summit to showcase its efforts to rebuild the region and its experience
in preparing for natural disasters.

The three-nation transport and transit corridor pact was signed in the presence of

Iran, India Ink 12 MoUs to Boost Bilateral Ties.
India and Iran signed 12 memorandum of understandings (MoUs) and agreements in
various areas including building and operating the Chabahar port by India.
Agreements include cooperation in science and technology, culture, library
sciences, and cooperation between the EXIM banks of both the countries.
Bilateral contract on Chabahar Port for port development and operations was
signed between IPGPL (India Ports Global Private Limited) and Arya Banader of Iran.
MoU between EXIM Bank and Irans Ports and Maritime Organization is intended for
the purpose of credit of USD 150 million for Chabahar port.

NALCO signs MoU with Iran govt to set up smelter plant in Chabahar.
National Aluminium Company Limited (NALCO) signed a MoU with Iranian Mines &
Mining Industries Development & Renovation Organization (IMIDRO) to explore the
possibility of setting up a smelter on joint venture in Iran.
For the proposed smelter plant in Chabahar Free Trade Zone, Nalco would supply
alumina from its refinery in India.
The MoU was signed between chairman-cum-managing director of Nalco and vice
chairman of Iran's planning board in presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and
President of Iran Hassan Rouhani in Tehran.
Sirisena to attend G-7 summit in Japan.
Sri Lankas President Maithripala Sirisena, will be the first leader of his country to
take part in the G-7 summit to be held in Ise-Shima, Japan.

Apart from Mr. Sirisena, Prime Ministers of Bangladesh, Laos, Papua New Guinea

MoU between Indian Space Research Organisation and the United Arab
Emirates Space Agency.
The Union Cabinet, chaired by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi was apprised
of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between Indian Space Research
Organisation (ISRO) and the United Arab Emirates Space Agency (UAESA) for

G7 nations pledge to end fossil fuel subsidies by 2025.
The G7 nations have for the first time set a deadline for the ending most fossil fuel
subsidies, saying government support for coal, oil and gas should end by 2025.
All countries to join them in eliminating ''inefficient fossil fuel subsidies'' within a
decade.
Across the G7, subsidies are already falling, assisted by falling commodity prices.
The G7 joins the leaders of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and
Development (OECD) and the World Bank, who have previously called for an end to
assistance for fossil fuel projects.

The focus of the call is to undertake horticultural research in order to develop and
deploy modern tools of plant biotechnology to improve crop productivity.
The funding commitment from BIRAC and Hort Innovation is up to 6 million
Australian dollars over a period of three years.
Through the signing of this MoU, Hort Innovation aim to create a supportive
innovation ecosystem for researchers to undertake high-level research and promote
horticulture techniques.

A three day '100 Smart Cities India' Conference got underway in Berlin, Germany.
Inaugurated by the Minister of Urban Development Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu and
Germanys Minister of Nature Conservation, Forests, Building and Nuclear Safety Dr.
Barbara Hendrics.
Leading global companies, policy makers and experts are attending the conference
being organized to highlight investment opportunities in smart city development set in
motion in India.
Germany has earlier agreed to associate itself with the development of
Bhubaneswar, Kochi and Coimbatore as smart city through technical and financial
assistance.
Seminar on International Day of UN Peacekeepers.
On 'International Day of UN Peacekeeper's', a joint seminar on ''United Nations
Peacekeeping: Role and Relevance in Conflict Resolution'' was organized at New Delhi.
Organized by the Centre for Land Warfare Studies (CLAWS) and Centre for United
Nations Peacekeeping (CUNPK) along with United Nations Resident Coordinators
Office.
The event was attended by COAS, members of the diplomatic community, veteran
peacekeepers, UN Country Teams, students from prominent universities and Indian
Army contingents earmarked for UN deployment.
Gen Dalbir Singh, Chief of Army Staff delivered the inaugural address wherein he
applauded the role of UN Peacekeeping Contingents in maintaining peace across the
world.
