Introduction

St Peter and Paul, Kaparu parish is located in the central province of

Zambia under the diocese of Kabwe. Kaparu parish is one hundred and four kilometres
from Lusaka town and one hundred and fourteen kilometres from Kabwe town.
Kaparu parish was started in the nineteen seventies by the Bethlehem missionaries
upon and the Society of African Mission fathers officially took over Kaparu mission
on the 25th of January 2015. We have currently two SMA priest working in Kaparu.
The parish is a rural parish scantly populated with the main activity being
small scale and subsistent farming presenting a vast square area of coverage for the
parish culminating to twenty-four out stations. These outstations are spread on long
distances with the nearest at eleven kilometres and the furthest at seventy-four
kilometres away. Communication is poor to the outstations with low or no phone
network coverage and bad roads. Many of the outstation are poor and still establishing
themselves with a low number in average of attendance and practicing Catholics. We
have active lay organisations at the parish that include, St Anna, St. Joachim,
Ludovico/Nazareth, Xaverians, Legion of Mary and Kalolo.

Problem identification
Many of the outstations are poorly constructed and some are praying in
thatched roofed chapel that are on the verge of collapse with the coming rains. An
example of one of this outstations is St Mary Mpampu outstations that I visited
recently. The Christians there are few and a poor. There are not able to raise the funds
for construction of a decent chapel. They are willing to provide the locally produced
clay burnt bricks and also collect sand that is locally available in the area. The main
challenge is acquisition of cement, timber and roofing sheets.
Solution
We have begun the construction of the new chapel. We have laid and built the
foundation of the 20 metres by 8 metres chapel. The members of the outstation also
have farmed some soya beans that will be sold to help raise the labour cost for the
brick layer. We look forward with hope to have well-wishers to assist in the buying on
the building material that makes approximately 54 percent of the total cost. The local
community will participate in the construction by providing the sand, bricks and
paying for the labour of the construction.

We here in a photo of the current chapel of St Marys Mpampu outstation and

just be sides it we have began the construction of the new chapel. We also include the
bill of quantity for the construction of the new chapel.
