Background
1. The papers citation was asked to find so the student learn how to use the Ryerson library website,
and know how to look up any sort of written documents for upcoming scientific paper writing.

2. The paper was posted through the Ryerson library website, and not through D2L due to Ryersons
legal agreement to post stuff to their library website but D2L does not have permission to do so.

3. Plagiarism is considered to be an act of copying, or stealing. Its usually occurs when someone
takes information that someone worked really hard to get the written results for their research, and
does not source or cite them.
The possible penalties for plagiarism are as follows;
1. May obtain 0% in the assessment
2. May be suspended
3. May be expelled from the program
4. May be expelled from COOP program

Abstract
1. The purpose of an abstract in a scientific article in general is to summarize the body, tell the reader
about the thesis, hypothesis, and explain the main focus.

2. The abstract conveys multiple point of information, the focus of the paper, the methods used in the
reading, the results, and a conclusion that states the abstract.

3. The basic experimental methods used by the authors in this paper were; predicting what the effects
will be of the elevated [CO2] and Tsoil on the photosynthetic responses of the Acer spicatum
seedlings to the light, understand it and examining it.

4. The most important result from this experiment, were the elevated carbon concentration [CO2]
success to increase the photosynthetic responses to light and in the other side the elevated Tsoil
failed to increase the photosynthetic responses to light.

5. It being normal or abnormal has to do with the reading itself. Some reading may require for citing
while others may not. Usually they are not cited.

6. The abstract should be around 150 to 250 words. Nice and simple.

Introduction
2
1. Literature reviews, do not state new findings, they summarize work, as they are secondary
sources, which is critical in an introduction as it. Their purpose is to state findings and researched
topics.

2. there are some gaps that the researchers wanted to fill in this research like the general lack of
understanding on how elevated carbon dioxide concentrations [CO2] and high-light interact
together to affect the physiological traits of shade-tolerant plants, and the elevated Tsoil as well.

3. The specific hypothesis induces changes in leaf physiolofy and morphology, they experimented
by investigating the effects of CO2 and Tsoil, with treating them in a different light levels.

4. The statements needs to have citations following them are when another authors idea was quoted
exactly in the new author research, and the statements thats dont need a citations following them
are the statements were paraphrased by the research author.

5. Regeneration is a term used to describe the process by which a living organism returns to its
original form following damage or loss. The ability of an organism to regenerate may be
limited by the organisms complexity#1. Freshwater planarians exhibit exceptional
developmental plasticity that permits these simple triploblastic metazoans to regenerate
completely from tiny fragments#2. The process of regeneration is based upon the proliferation
and differentiation of undifferentiated, totipotent stem-cells called neoblasts. Neoblasts
migrate to the site of injury where they differentiate into missing cell types#3.

6. Regeneration is a term used to describe the process by which a living organism to returns to its
original form following damage or loss. The ability of an organism regenerate may be limited by
the organism's complexity (Alvarado, 2003).

7. Freshwater planarians exhibit exceptional developmental plasticity that permits these simple
triploblastic metazoans to regenerate completely from tiny fragments (Baguna & Salo, 2002).

8. The process of regeneration is based upon the proliferation and differentiation of undifferentiated,
totipotent stem-cells called neoblasts. "Neoblasts migrate to the site of injury where they
differentiate into missing cell types".(Jensen et al, 1992).

9. Leaf-water deficit and the photoinhibition of A have also been observed under high-light
conditions (Bazzaz and Wayne, 1994; Krause et al., 2012; Osmond et al., 1999; Pearcy, 1990)
(Bazzaz, F.A., Wayne, P.M.,. Coping with environmental heterogeneity: the physiologicla ecology
of tree seedlings regeneration across the gap-understory contunuum. In: (Eds.), Exploitation of
Evironmental Heterogeneity by Plants. Ecophysiological Processes Above- and Belowground.

Materials and Methods

1. In a scientific paper, the Materials and Methods section is usually easily interpreted. It helps with
establishing what needs to be done and it clarifies the scientific paper.

2. The format is simple, it does not need to be formally structured although each headline talks
about itself, in a paragraph manner not like what there in the science lab manuals. Using the past
passive tense.

3. If I were familiar with the area of research I will be able to replicate the experiment under certain
conditions.

4. There was an experimental result table showing the Summary of ANOVA

given in the materials and methods section of this scientific paper.

5. No there is no literature review in the materials and methods section of this scientific paper.

6. The authors that wrote the article did not come up with the initial method and referenced Cheng,
who came up with the design.

7. To see detail description of Chengs research, go to the references section to further understand
original information mentioned in the research article.

Results Section

1. Explain the purpose of the Results section including what should be included in this section. Are
the results interpreted here? (3 marks)
2. The results section, includes all expirement finals, and you have to confirm that

3. In the Results section, how are data presented in a scientific paper?

4. Do you see the same data presented in both Tables and Figures or is the information different?

5. Is it sufficient to present all results in either Tables or Figures, or do you need descriptive text as
well in an accompanying paragraphs?

4
6. Are there any methodological statements (i.e. statements that explain how the experiment was
done) in the Results section of a scientific paper?

7. When looking at Table 1 of this paper, how did the authours indicate p values 0.05? (a statistical
term used to denote statistically-significant results). Is this useful to the reader? (2 marks)

8.
i) A
ii) AB
iii) B
iv) AB
v) AB

9. In the second paragraph of the Results section, the authours state No interactions among light,
Tsoil, and [CO2] or between Tsoil were significant. (Table1) As a reader looking at Table 1,
how do you know this is true?

Discussion

1. The discussion section must include the research findings which answers the research main
question. There are some parts should be included in the discussion section like engage the reader
in thinking critically about issues based upon an evidence-based interpretation of findings.

2. The methodological statements are not discussed in the discussion section of this scientific paper.

3. So that we will be able to compare the previous researches with the current research findings
available that we can reach.

4. That when carbon dioxide concentration is increased, this correlates an increase the stimulation
of soil temperature of A but A, J responsiveness decreased when exposed to triose phosphate
utilization to light.

5. What further work do the authours of this paper suggest needs to be carried out?change
Further long-term experiments with mature mountain maple trees are needed to determine future response
patterns because only short term was examined

References

1. The references section is to prevent plagiarism by noting authors that have contributed to the
scientific paper.

5
2.
B) authours
E) date
C) article title
A) journal title
D) volume number
F) page numbers

3. The scientific paper references the authors last name first in alphabetic order, with the authors
initial behind.

4. The references are arranged alphabetically.

Overall
1. I learned from the article that altering of the [CO2] will effect the photosynthetic responses of some
types of plants to to the light and changing the Tsoil will effect in changing the photosynthetic
responses of some plants too. and there is always something should be missing in any research if
it doesnt show today it shows another day.

2. I will be more confident if I picked up a different scientific paper and this assignment helped me
to understand the format of a scientific research paper and how to read the presented information.
