Chart caller script


1. Before beginning, chart caller (CC) signs Pay attention now please.
Teacher watches for appropriate response
If needed, she cues the CC to ask for appropriate
behavior with one of these phrases:
CC please tell ____ to get a good listening body.
CC please tell ____ to pay attention.

2. CC moves the squares as the children say, Down, over, over, over, up.

3. CC reads the squares on the chart.


(from left to right, touching each square)

4. CC excuses teaching and work table with the phrase:


___ group stand up. (Wait for all to respond) Go to the teaching table now
please.
___ group stand up. (Wait for all to respond) Go to the work table now
please.

5. CC addresses center group by saying:


___ group, think of where you want to go. Raise your hand
when youre ready.

6. CC stays next to the chart, calls a child who is ready by name and
asks:
___, where do you want to go? The child gives a full sentence response
and the chart caller says, Get your clothespin and go now please.

7. CC moves onto the next child, calling on those who are ready. If
a child is not ready, the CC skips them and comes back when all
the other children in that group have been called.

8. CC excuses the last center group with the same script as the previous
center group.

Helpful reminders
o always put the square taken off first on the floor or somewhere away from the chart so the
squares dont get mixed up as the chart caller is rotating them
o the teacher scaffolds the chart caller as needed
o a self start activity (i.e. manipulatives, books, etc) is put at the teaching table for the
children to do until the teacher gets there
o teacher goes to the teaching table to maximize teaching time
We Can! Chart Calling Steps
1. MOVE the squares.
Down, over, over, over, up 4th 3rd 2nd

Purpose: to orderly rotate the groups 1st

2. READ the squares.
From left to right, while pointing to them

Purpose: children can plan ahead and identify where


their group is going

1. Green group goes to teaching table.


2. Red group goes to centers.
3. Blue group goes to work table. 1st 2nd 3rd 4th
4. Yellow group goes to centers.

3. EXCUSE the groups.


Excuse the groups in this order: teaching table, work table, first
center group, last center group

Purpose: orderly moves groups to small group instruction, maximizes teaching


table instructional time

1. Green group stand up. Go to the teaching table now please.


2. Blue group stand up. Go to the work table now please.
3. Red group, think of where you want to go. (Raise your hand,
stand up) when you are ready. (Childs name), where do you
want to go? Child responds in a full sentence. Get your
clothespin and go now please.
4. Yellow group, think of where you want to go. (Raise your
hand, stand up) when you are ready. (Childs name), where do
you want to go? Child responds in a full sentence. Get
your clothespin and go now please.
