Inline joints for MI/MIND paper
insulated cables up to 1 kV

Raychem heat-shrinkable materials

have been widely used to insulate,
seal and mechanically protect power
cables since the 1960s. The reliability
and simplicity of the heat-shrinkable
technique led our engineers, in close
collaboration with electrical utilities,
to develop a series of cable joints
based on these materials.
The Tyco Electronics Energy Divisions
system eliminates the heavy equip-
ment, compound pouring and delays
of traditional methods, and has pro-
ven to be a dependable, time-saving
and easy-to-install answer to cable
jointing problems.

Ease of installation
By shrinking clear insulating tubing
over the cores, the fitter is able to
protect the cable from moisture and
dirt right from the start of the jointing
procedure.
To insulate the connectors, heavy-wall
heat-shrinkable tubing is used. This
automatically ensures the necessary
wall thickness and allows the use of
various conductor jointing techniques.

Sealing
To keep cable impregnation in place
and water out, the functions of the
lead sheath are restored with an
adhesive-lined heat-shrinkable sleeve.
The heat and the shrinking action
cause the adhesive to melt and flow, Performance As the leader of heat-shrinkable

Heat-shrinkable joints for transitions

from MI/MIND paper insulated cables
to plastic and rubber insulated cables
up to 1 kV

The problem of connecting plastic

insulated power cables to existing
paper insulated ones has led to the
requirement for an insulating and
sealing system with proven service
records of reliability for jointing each
of the two cable types.

Universal applicability
Raychem transition joints for 1 kV
meet this requirement because they
rely on a technique designed and
used from the outset for both paper
and plastic insulated cables. This is
the technology of Raychem heat-
shrinkable materials.
Following extensive application over
the last decades, our system is now
widely acknowledged as an unusually
dependable and easy-to-install
jointing method for traditional
and modern cable types alike.

Fast and efficient

Mixing, pouring, lopping-up and
curing delays are all eliminated since
Raychem joints require no jointing
compound or resin. This feature also
enables the joint to be buried imme-
diately. As the components are of
heat-shrinkable material, they can
be held in stock in varying climatic
conditions without risk of long-term
deterioration.

GUROFLEX
Environmentally friendly casting material
for 1 kV cable joints

The function of a casting material is

to insulate electrical connections in
underground cables and prevent
water ingress from outside the joint
or from within the cable.

GUROFLEX is an environmentally
friendly, easy to handle, two-compo-
nent, cold casting material based on
hydrocarbons.
Due to its elasticity, it is well-suited to
accommodate thermal expansion of
insulated cables, thereby preventing
tears, breaks and cracks that could
permit water ingress.
It is an excellent insulating material
with water-repellent properties.
It covers and adheres to metal
components and protects them
from corrosion.

What is GUROFLEX made of? How is GUROFLEX used?

GUROFLEX is a hydrocarbon resin. Preparation of GUROFLEX takes place
One of the outstanding advantages immediately before casting. The two
of this kind of resin is that it does components are mixed either in a

RAPID 3010 & 4100

Casting materials for 1 kV cable joints

The function of a casting material is

to insulate electrical connections in
underground cables and prevent
water ingress from outside the joint
or from within the cable.

RAPID 3010 & 4100 are two-comp-

onent, polyurethane-type casting
materials type. RAPID 3010 is a
hydrophobic, soft-elastic polyurethane
resin, meeting the requirements
of E DIN VDE 0291-2 06.97 and
CENELEC HD 623.
RAPID 4100 is also a hydrophobic,
soft-elastic polyurethane resin, which
meets most of the requirements of
E DIN VDE 0291-2 06.97, except that
tear strengths are lower than speci-
fied in the standard. Nevertheless,
RAPID 4100 meets the requirements
of the joint performance standard
CENELEC HD 623. Both systems have
excellent insulation properties and
are well suited for all cable jointing
systems.

What are the RAPID 3010 & 4100 How are RAPID 3010 & 4100

stability under service conditions.
Furthermore the RAPID systems have
an excellent curing profile at various
temperatures, which allows easy
handling and curing, summer and
winter alike.

Permanent elasticity ensures long-

term stability of the inherent move-
ments of the cable. As a result of the
cross-linking reactions, the resin
bonds strongly to functional parts,
thus avoiding the creation of voids
between hardened resin and cable
insulation.
