Today Id like to discuss about How To Write a FORMAL LETTER to ask for
PERMISSION.
Before that, for FORMAL LETTER, what you/your students need to know:
1. There is a FORMAT.
2. Use PRESENT TENSE. (in some cases, past tense form will
be required, however, if you are dealing with weak
students, you want to avoid it. Thus, the present tense
approach)
4. Useful sentences:
Underlining the keywords(kata kunci) will help you. Make sure you understand
everything the question asks for. Now you can go ahead to write your letter.
Just take it form the question and move on to the real writing.
You can always start the first sentence of a formal letter like this. Again, you can get
ideas from the question.
On behalf of> bagi pihak.
I am writing this letter to/for > Saya menulis surat ini untuk
Step 5: Give details: Date, Time, Number of
People.
Whether or not the question ask for these details, it is always good to provide some
information to prove that you know what youre doing.
Thank you for your cooperation. I hope to receive your reply soon.
1. You have to tell them you hope they can think about your request,
2. ask them to reply you as soon as possible,
3. leave your contact number,
4. and say thank you to them.
Step 8: Check your work
You SHOULD always check your work after you finish writing. Check your format,
check you tenses, check your spelling, anything. A simple read through will also
help!
*Know that you should go ahead to write longer if you are able to. However, if you
think you are weak , this is a good writing to start with.
I hope this helps you.
Happy Learning, Happy Teaching.

1. There is a FORMAT.
2. Use PRESENT TENSE. (in some cases, past tense form will
be required, however, if you are dealing with weak
students, you want to avoid it. Thus, the present tense
approach)
3. UNDERSTAND step 4.
Underlining the keywords(kata kunci) will help you. Make sure you understand
everything the question asks for. Now you can go ahead to write your article.
Always take your title from the question. Dont go wasting your time to think of a new
title.
And then : Tell your reader what are the main points that you are going to discuss.
Take what you can from the questions.
You can pick only one of the above to write your introduction:
(define)
1. The Internet is a global network that connects millions of computer around the
world. There are many advantages that we can get from the Internet. Among all,
the three most important advantages are to provide information, connect with
other people, and act as a form of entertainment.
(Opinion)
2. The Internet has changed the world rapidly in the past ten to twenty years. We
use Internet very often in life because it is very convenient. We can get all the
information we want in just a few clicks. There are many advantages that we
can get from the Internet. Among all, the three most important advantages are

access to the Internet now while about 80% of the Malaysians have access to
the Internet. There are many advantages that we can get from the Internet.

or
Mix them up :
The Internet is a global network that connects millions of computer around the world.
It has changed the world rapidly in the past ten to twenty years. We use the Internet
very often in life because it is very convenient. We can get all the information we want
in a blink of an eye. According to the New Straight Times, more than 190 countries in
the world have access to the Internet now while about 80% of the Malaysians have
access to the Internet. There are many advantages that we can get from the Internet.
Among all, the three most important advantages are to provide information, connect
with other people, and as a form of entertainment.
Step 8: Conclusion
CONCLUSION is a summary of what you have written.
For weak students, conclusion is simply repeating what they write in the
INTRODUCTION with a little bit of changes.
The Internet is useful for all of us. We can get many benefits if we use it. As
discussed above, the Internet can provide us more information. It also helps
us to connect with many people like friends and family. Not only that, we can
use it as a form of entertainment. We should appreciate and make full use of
the Internet.

This is something Ive been doing with my learners and I have seen tremendous
results in the past two years! It works extremely well with low-intermediate level. If
you remember the chunking techniques back in the ELT school days, this is
definitely it!
Its as simple as drag and drop.
I normally introduce them a cycle when answering this part of the question. (which i
might discuss in another entry). There are two important elements here: OPENING &
ENDING.
I want to give our learners some ready-packed openings and endings so that they
could simply drag and drop or make slight adjustments later on. However, I also
dont want to kill their creativity so I always provides several options and difficulties to
them, depending on how much they can take in.
To this date, my learners have used these useful phrases/sentences in their writing
and its helped them to see that they too can produce something. (Extremely
important realisation for them in my opinion!) And more importantly, they have shown
great progress.

OPENING ENDING
the translations may not be precise, I tried my best to keep the meaning as close
as possible.
After I introduce these words to them. I normally show them how to arrange them in
their answers:
OPENING
OPTION A:
Hi, how are you? I hope you are in the pink. I am over the moon because you are
coming.
OPTION B:
Hi, hows it going? I hope you are fit as fiddle. I am over the moon to know that you
are coming to Sarawak.
OPTION C:
Hello, how are you? I hope you are fit as fiddle. Holiday is around the corner. I am
over the moon as I can spend my time watching The Walking Dead.
OPTION D:
(I think youve got the hang of it. yea?) Mix and match. Simple or complex. However
you like.
ENDING
OPTION A:
Okay. I think I need to pen off now. Drop me a line when you have time. Bye.
OPTION B:
Okay, I think i need to pen off now. I have bigger fish to fry. See you soon my friend!
Goodbye!
OPTION C:
Okay, I need to pen off now. My mother is calling. Dont forget to drop me a line as I
will be waiting around the clock for your reply. Take care. Bye!
*Just remember to help learners work from the basic ones, and gradually move to
the more complex ones. They will be able to come out with something later on.
Once they can write this confidently, they will only have to focus on the content after
this.
stay tune for more
Happy Teaching, Happy learning!
