113 Color M/W 10:30-1:15 -WAPAHA

Project Overview
Introduce the basic physics of Color as it relates to light. Physicists explain color as a function of
light. However, our understanding of color as artists can be complicated by scientific facts of
physics of light differs in fundamental ways from the physics of pigments. Today you will work
in collaboration (groups of 3) to complete your sculpture.
Goal

To gain an understanding of how Additive Color works

To understand the difference between Additive Color RGB and Subtractive Color RYB
To become familiar with Additive Color System

Reading
Color Workbook, Fourth Edition, Becky Koenig, Pearson Education, Inc., 2013
Ch 1: pages 1-9 (from Intro to Additive Color Media)

Vocabulary
Refraction, color physics, RGB, trichromatic theory, visible spectrum, wavelength, spectral hues,
additive system, transparency, RGB color wheel
Materials
Provided: sticks, cellophane (Red, Green, Blue) glue sticks
Other Supplies: plastic cups, cellophane (additive primaries & secondary colors), plastic color
bottles, craft sticks, cardboard, wood, black paper, Ivory/Mars Black, Glue sticks, hot glue gun,
scissors, box cutters, x-acto knife with blades.

Research_____________________________________________________________________
1. Documentation: Record process and group ideas- Think about the basic physics of color
as it relates to light. Think of some of the new techniques available to artists in
photography, video, and computing. Use these ideas to build on for the design of your
sculpture. Focus on the transfer of light to various parts of your sculpture.

2. Collection of material: supplies can come from home, recycling bins, near trash cans and
scrap bins, and store. Colors must be transparent. Everyone in the group will contribute
to the collection of materials. Once idea and collection of materials are made your
group can start.
