Transformer Inrush Curves

Description: Equations used to plot the different types of transformer inrush curves in ETAP
Category: STAR
Type: Calculation, Information
Keywords: STAR, Transformer, Inrush curve, Point, Curve-Piecewise, Curve-Equation

ETAP provides three types of inrush curves to plot for the 2-winding and 3-winding
transformers:
Point
Curve Piecewise
Curve Equation

1. Point
When Point is selected as the inrush curve type, an inrush point marker is displayed on the
STAR View as a single point with coordinates (Multiplier*FLA, Duration)

2. Point
When Curve-Piecewise is selected as the inrush curve type, a piecewise inrush curve is
displayed on the STAR View with the following points

t (cyc) x FLA

1000*Duration M/6

100*Duration M/4

10*Duration M/2

1*Duration M

0.1*Duration 2.083*M

3. Curve - Equation
When Curve-Equation is selected as the inrush curve type, an equation-based inrush curve
is displayed on the STAR View according to the following equation

K I e
I
2
where,
K = Multiplier (ratio between maximum peak inrush current value and the rated current of the
transformer)
I1r = Rated current of the transformer (FLA)
= Time constant in cycles
