Present Simple Draughts
Here is a creative way to teach your students about present simple subject-verb agreement.

Before class, make one copy of the board and draughts for each pair of students and cut the
draughts as indicated.

Procedure

Divide the class into pairs and give each pair a draughts board. Give one of the students the
pronoun/noun draughts and the other student the verb draughts.

Each student will need 16 counters altogether. There will be a few counters left over and two
queens. The queens are used later in the game if a student manages to cross the board.

Tell the students to place their counters on the black squares on either side of the draughts
board.

Next, explain the rules for playing draughts.

Add these two rules:

A pronoun / noun counter may only take a verb counter or vice versa when there is
grammatical agreement between them. For example, the 'You' counter can take the 'ask'
counter, but cannot take the 'wants' counter.

When there is grammatical agreement, the student makes a sentence using the two words
before the counter is taken.

When the students understand the rules, let them start the activity.

If a student manages to get their counter across the board, it becomes a Queen. The queen
can move around the board freely and has grammatical agreement with all counters.

When the students have finished playing, let them swap counters and play again.
