Material Science and Engineering Assignment

Chapter 1 - 4

Chapter 1

1.1 Select one or more of the following modern items or devices and conduct an Internet search
in order to determine what specific material(s) is (are) used and what specific properties this
(these) material(s) possess(es) in order for the device/item to function properly. Finally, write a
short essay in which you report your findings.
Cell phone/digital camera batteries
Cell phone displays
Solar cells
Wind turbine blades
Fuel cells
Automobile engine blocks (other than cast
iron)
Automobile bodies (other than steel alloys)
Space telescope mirrors
Military body armor
Sports equipment
Soccer balls
Basketballs
Ski poles
Ski boots
Snowboards
Surfboards
Golf clubs
Golf balls
Kayaks
Lightweight bicycle frames

Answer :

Kayak

We have a lot of choices when it comes to the material that kayaks can be made from. One of the
material that kayak can be made of is rotomolded polyethylene. Rotomolded polyethylene is
chosen because it is least expensive (low cost). It is probably the best choice for recreational
kayaks since people dont usually want to spend a lot for a recreational kayak. Polyethylene also
floating on the water so the kayak can be used. Polyethylene also the most flexible material so it
helps the worker forming the material into the kayak (curve) without using so many force or
techniques and polyethylene also easier to repair. Polyethylene is the most impact resistant
material than the other materials such as fiberglass. Lastly, Polyethylene is more durable,
polyethylene will hold up better if the hull contact with the rocks, better than another material
like fiberglass.

Chapter 2

2.1 Cite the difference between atomic mass and atomic weight.

Answer : The difference between atomic mass and atomic weight is atomic mass is the mass of
an individual atom, on the other hand, atomic weight is the average (weighted) of the atomic
masses of an atom's naturally occurring isotopes.

Chapter 3

3.1 What is the difference between atomic structure and crystal structure?

Answer : The difference between atomic structure and crustal structure is atomic structure relates
to the number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus of an atom, as well as the number and
probability distributions of the constituent electrons. On the other hand, crystal structure pertains
to the arrangement of atoms in the crystalline solid material.

Chapter 4

4.1 Calculate the fraction of atom sites that are vacant for lead at its melting temperature of
327C (600 K). Assume an energy for vacancy formation of 0.55 eV/atom.

Answer :

T = 600 K

Qv = 0.55 eV/atom

Nv / N = exp (Qv /kT) = - 0.55 eV/atom / (8.62 105 eV/atom-K)(600 K)

= 2.41 10-5
