1. INTRODUCTION
This report represents the results of subsurface exploration and geotechnical study
conducted to develop geotechnical engineering recommendation for development of a new
communication tower in Sabratah city. All work was performed in accordance with Alia
technical proposal. Authorization to procced with the necessary work was given by
ALWADI COMMUNICATIONS Co. in Jul. 2017. The scope of the exploration included
subsurface drilling and sampling, ground electrical resistivity, laboratory testing,
engineering evaluation of the field and laboratory data, and the preparation of this report.
The purpose of these services is to provide information and geotechnical engineering
recommendations relative to:
It was understood that the project generally consists of the construction of a 45-meter tall,
self-supported, four-legged tower that will likely be supported on a shallow concrete
foundation. A summary of the project is presented below:
Item Description
Site ID 1178
3. GEOLOGY
The geological setting of the proposed project site is described in the explanatory
booklet on the Geological Map of Libya (sheet: Sheet No. NI 33-13) published by
Industrial Research Centre. This geology was generally confirmed in the site
investigation. The range of geological materials likely to be encountered across the
proposed development can be separated into:
4. FIELD ACTIVITIES
The soil samples were classified using Unified Soil Classification System (USCS) in
accordance with ASTM D 2487. Annex B shows the laboratory testing results including soil
classification group presented in grain size distribution sheet.
7. GEOTECHNICAL PARAMETERS
SPT values were corrected as N60 and N70 by using the formula given below;
N60 or N70 = CN x N x 1 x 2 x 3 x 4
Where
Geotechnical soil parameters were derived from corrected SPT values using the following
equations.
Internal friction angel for granular soils, = 0.45 N70 + 20 Shioi and Fukui (1982)
Coefficient of subgrade reaction, Ks Ks = Es / B (1-2) Das (2007).
Static modulus of elasticity, Es Es = N60 x Pa Kulhawy and Mayne (1990)
Shear wave velocity, Vs Vs = C1 (Po)0.14 (N60)0.25 Yoshida et al. (1988)

8. REGIONAL SEISMICITY
The hazard map in Figure 8.1 indicates that most of Libya is of rather low seismic hazard except
for zones along the coast, where the highest PGA values are in the range 0.08g to 0.16g. The
highest PGA value shown for Libya in the map is in a small area that corresponds approximately to
the epicenter of the 1935 earthquake, and is in the range 0.13g to 0.16g.
Uniform Building Code (UBC 1997) seismic parameters are provided in the following table below
Figure 8.1 GSHAP seismic hazard map showing 475-year PGA ) Grnthal et al., 1999)
where
Iz = strain influence factor
C1 = a correction factor for the depth of foundation
C2 = correction factor to account for creep in soil
q' = stress at the level of the foundation
Es = modulus of elasticity of soil
where
Sc , Sq , S = shape factor
dc , dq , d = depth factor
ic , iq , i = Inclination factors
gc , gq , g = ground factor base on slope
bc , bq , b = base factors
Classification of the severity of chemical attack was based on the soil sulphate content, pH
value, and type of exposure condition. Accordingly, the site has been classified in
accordance with BS 8500 as follows:
in-situ soil resistivity testing was completed by a Alias field engineer. Resistivity testing
was performed in general accordance with ASTM G57 by the Wenner Four Probe Method
using Pasi digital earth tester model 16 GL. One resistivity lines was completed with
electrodes spaced at approximately 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, 4.0 and 6.0 meter. The resistivity test
results are tabulated below:

At the time of this report, we understand that the preferred foundation is a shallow
concrete foundation that may consist of individual elements at each tower leg. We
believe this foundation system is appropriate to the site conditions. This foundation
system with width of 3.0 m or less may be designed for an allowable bearing
pressure of 400 KPa or less on the existing recompacted sandy soils at a minimum
embedment depth of 2.80 meter below grade level. However, it is recommended to
consider the foundation system designed based on bearing capacity of 200 KPa
(refer to tower design. Doc. E130980-0000-ED2).
Based on the allowable bearing value recommended above, total settlement of the
shallow footings is anticipated to be less than 50 mm.
For uplift resistance from the soil, an estimated dry unit weight of 17 KN/m3 for on-
borrow soil compacted to 99 percent of the maximum modified Proctor density
value (ASTM D 1557) should be used.
The excavated soil would not be suitable for use in compacted primary and
secondary structural fill, therefore, borrow soil (classified as SW, SP, SW-SM, SP-
SM, GW, GP, GW-GM or GP-GM according to USCS) should be sued as fill
material.
It is understood that the uplift capacity was estimated based on the assumption that
the uplift load will be resisted by the foundation weight plus the weight of inverted
frustum of pyramid of soil on the foundation pad with side (failure surface) inclined
at an angle equal to internal friction angle ( = 30) with the vertical. In our case the
failure surface will extend along the interface between the native ground and the
backfill, therefore, in order to meet the design requirements, the excavation wall
should be flattened to the angle equal to the internal friction angle, ( = 30).

Fills and backfills under and around the foundation should be placed in loose lifts
not exceeding 300 mm in thickness and compacted to at least 99 percent of the
maximum dry density as per ASTM D 1557. In general, it is our experience that
hand-operated compaction equipment is typically only effective in compacting the
uppermost 100 to 150 mm of a fill lift. Therefore, if hand-operated equipment is
used, the lift thickness should be reduced. All fills and backfills should be
compacted with uniform passes.
According to chemical test results performed on soil samples obtained from several
depths below the topsoil layer, the soils tested have sulfate and chloride contents
that are below the permissible limits according to British standard specification (BS
8500). Soil pH values range from 8.25 to 8.27 indicating lightly to moderately
alkaline soils. Therefore, ordinary Portland cement can be used for the concrete of
the foundation.
Liquefaction refers to the sudden, temporary loss of soil strength during strong
ground shaking. This phenomenon can occur where there are saturated, loose,
granular deposits subjected to seismic shaking. Therefore, the soil profile and
ground conditions at this site are considered not susceptible to liquefaction.
