2. SITE AND PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The telecommunication site is located in city of Sabratah. The site is almost even and
horizontal and the ground surface is generally covered with uncontrolled backfill made of
soil and stone mixture.

It was understood that the project generally consists of the construction of a 45-meter tall,
self-supported, four-legged tower that will likely be supported on a shallow concrete
foundation. A summary of the project is presented below:

3. GEOLOGY
The geological setting of the proposed project site is described in the explanatory
booklet on the Geological Map of Libya (sheet: Sheet No. NI 33-13) published by
Industrial Research Centre. This geology was generally confirmed in the site
investigation. The range of geological materials likely to be encountered across the
proposed development can be separated into:

Aeolian deposits (fine silty sand to sandy silt)

Calcareous sand with occasional silt lenses and slightly cemented caliche
bands

4. FIELD ACTIVITIES

4.1. FIELD EXPLORATION

Subsurface conditions at the project site was explored by drilling 2 boreholes named BH1
and BH2. Both of them were taken to a depth of 10.5 m below the existing ground level.
the boreholes were distributed on the site as shown in exploration points locations plan
presented in annex D. The drilling was carried out on Jul 17, 2017 using rotary drilling rig.
Details and sampling methods used, field data obtained, and soil and groundwater
conditions encountered are presented in the boring log provided in annex A. The
boreholes were progressed using drag bit (10 cm in diameter) using compressed air as
flushing medium. Soil samples were obtained where possible at 0.5 and 1.0 meter
intervals using Standard Penetration Test (SPT) in accordance with ASTM D 1586. During
SPT sampling, the sampler is driven 45.0 cm and the hammer blows for each 15.0 cm
interval of penetration are recorded. The standard penetration resistance, N-value, is the
sum of the blows for the second and third intervals. The drill rig used is equipped with an
automatic hammer to drive the split spoon.

4.2. LABORATORY TESTING

In the laboratory, each of the samples recovered from the borings was examined and
visually classified by a geotechnical engineer. In addition, Laboratory tests were performed
on selected samples to assess the engineering properties and physical characteristics of
soils at the site. The following tests were performed:

Test Sample type Standard

Moisture content Disturbed ASTM D 2216
Grain size distribution Disturbed ASTM D 422
Atterberg limits Disturbed ASTM D 4318
Specific gravity Disturbed ASTM D 854

Site: 1187 Sheet 5 / 12

The soil samples were classified using Unified Soil Classification System (USCS) in
accordance with ASTM D 2487. Annex B shows the laboratory testing results including soil
classification group presented in grain size distribution sheet.

5. SUBSURFACE CONDITION AND SOIL CLASSIFICATION

The main geotechnical features of subsurface condition in respect of the proposed
development are as follows (refer also to borehole logs in the annex A for the distribution
of the layers)

Stratum 1: Made Ground

Uncontrolled fill material consists of sand, gravel and crushed building material. The
thickness is about 0.75 m.

Stratum 2: Jeffara Formation

This layer consists of fine to medium grained, compacted non-plastic, Silt-Sand mixture
overlaid with thin layers of weathered rock (caliche bands). This layer was encountered at
depth of about 0.85 m. The thickness of this unit ranges mostly from about 3.0 m to about
3.5 m.

Stratum 3: Brown Silty Sand

This layer consists mainly medium dense brown, fine to medium grained, non-plastic, Silty
Sand (MS). The thickness of this layer is more than 6.0 m and extended to the end of the
boreholes.

6. GROUND WATER CONDITION

During the site investigation, the groundwater table was not encountered within the
exploration depth.

7. GEOTECHNICAL PARAMETERS

SPT values were corrected as N60 and N70 by using the formula given below;
N60 or N70 = CN x N x 1 x 2 x 3 x 4

Where

N: Actual SPT values measured during the drilling works

1: Hammer efficiency. In our case, it is 60/60 for N60 or 60/70 for N70
2: Rod length correction.
3: Sampler correction. In this investigation, a sampler without liner was used, therefore a
factor 1 was considered.
4: Correction of borehole diameters. In our case this factor is 1 due to actual drilling
diameter is 120 mm diameter in size
CN: adjustment for effective overburden pressure po (kpa) computed using Skemptons
relationship (1986).

Geotechnical soil parameters were derived from corrected SPT values using the following
equations.

8. REGIONAL SEISMICITY
The hazard map in Figure 8.1 indicates that most of Libya is of rather low seismic hazard except
for zones along the coast, where the highest PGA values are in the range 0.08g to 0.16g. The
highest PGA value shown for Libya in the map is in a small area that corresponds approximately to
the epicenter of the 1935 earthquake, and is in the range 0.13g to 0.16g.

Uniform Building Code (UBC 1997) seismic parameters are provided in the following table below

9. SOIL ALLOWABLE BEARING CAPACITY

Allowable bearing capacity and settlement of granular soils was evaluated in this report by
use of Vesic method and a semi-empirical strain influence factor method proposed by
Schmertmann and Hartman (1978). The calculated allowable bearing capacity at each
borehole location is presented graphically in annex C.

Settlement calculation using semi-empirical strain influence factor

According to this method, the settlement is

where
Iz = strain influence factor
C1 = a correction factor for the depth of foundation
C2 = correction factor to account for creep in soil
q' = stress at the level of the foundation
Es = modulus of elasticity of soil

Ultimate bearing capacity using Vesic method

The ultimate bearing capacity can be calculated as following:

qult = cNcscdcicgcbc + qNqsqdqiqgqbq + 0.5B'Nsdigb

10. CHEMICAL ANALYSIS AND CORROSION CONTROL

The results of chemical analysis of soil in the site are given in the table below. The
methodology of assessment of exposure conditions and specification of concrete to resist
chemical attack has been based on the BS 8500.

Borehole Sample Chloride T.D.S. Total Soluble

BH1 2.0 2.45 8.25 0.0085 0.0326 0.0316

BH2 3.0 3.45 8.27 0.0135 0.0300 0.0439

Classification of the severity of chemical attack was based on the soil sulphate content, pH
value, and type of exposure condition. Accordingly, the site has been classified in
accordance with BS 8500 as follows:

Sulphate limits, % Aggressive

Design

in-situ soil resistivity testing was completed by a Alias field engineer. Resistivity testing
was performed in general accordance with ASTM G57 by the Wenner Four Probe Method
using Pasi digital earth tester model 16 GL. One resistivity lines was completed with
electrodes spaced at approximately 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, 4.0 and 6.0 meter. The resistivity test
results are tabulated below:

11. CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS

From geotechnical engineering standpoint, it is our opinion that the site is suitable for the
proposed developments. Provided the recommendations presented herein are
implemented in design and construction of the project.

Based on the site investigation it appears that there is at least 6 m of medium to

dense silty Sand overlaid by Jeffara formation in the area of the proposed
improvements. It is our opinion that these materials, below about 1.0 m, will provide
adequate support for the proposed tower.

At the time of this report, we understand that the preferred foundation is a shallow
concrete foundation that may consist of individual elements at each tower leg. We
believe this foundation system is appropriate to the site conditions. This foundation
system with width of 3.0 m or less may be designed for an allowable bearing
pressure of 400 KPa or less on the existing recompacted sandy soils at a minimum
embedment depth of 2.80 meter below grade level. However, it is recommended to
consider the foundation system designed based on bearing capacity of 200 KPa
(refer to tower design. Doc. E130980-0000-ED2).

Based on the allowable bearing value recommended above, total settlement of the
shallow footings is anticipated to be less than 50 mm.

For uplift resistance from the soil, an estimated dry unit weight of 17 KN/m3 for on-
borrow soil compacted to 99 percent of the maximum modified Proctor density
value (ASTM D 1557) should be used.

In general, for the purpose of foundation design, the following geotechnical

parameters can be used.

Parameter Symbol Unit Design values

Compacted dry soil density d KN/m 3
17
Internal friction angle 32

The excavated soil would not be suitable for use in compacted primary and
secondary structural fill, therefore, borrow soil (classified as SW, SP, SW-SM, SP-
SM, GW, GP, GW-GM or GP-GM according to USCS) should be sued as fill
material.

It is understood that the uplift capacity was estimated based on the assumption that
the uplift load will be resisted by the foundation weight plus the weight of inverted
frustum of pyramid of soil on the foundation pad with side (failure surface) inclined
at an angle equal to internal friction angle ( = 30) with the vertical. In our case the
failure surface will extend along the interface between the native ground and the
backfill, therefore, in order to meet the design requirements, the excavation wall
should be flattened to the angle equal to the internal friction angle, ( = 30).
Geotechnical Investigation Report ENC LIBYA NATIONWIDE
TETRA NETWORK
Document No. GGIR - 290717-1
Site: 1187 Sheet 10 / 12

Fills and backfills under and around the foundation should be placed in loose lifts
not exceeding 300 mm in thickness and compacted to at least 99 percent of the
maximum dry density as per ASTM D 1557. In general, it is our experience that
hand-operated compaction equipment is typically only effective in compacting the
uppermost 100 to 150 mm of a fill lift. Therefore, if hand-operated equipment is
used, the lift thickness should be reduced. All fills and backfills should be
compacted with uniform passes.

According to chemical test results performed on soil samples obtained from several
depths below the topsoil layer, the soils tested have sulfate and chloride contents
that are below the permissible limits according to British standard specification (BS
8500). Soil pH values range from 8.25 to 8.27 indicating lightly to moderately
alkaline soils. Therefore, ordinary Portland cement can be used for the concrete of
the foundation.

Liquefaction refers to the sudden, temporary loss of soil strength during strong
ground shaking. This phenomenon can occur where there are saturated, loose,
granular deposits subjected to seismic shaking. Therefore, the soil profile and
ground conditions at this site are considered not susceptible to liquefaction.
