Configuration with CAP 531

There are several possibilities to design a configuration for a

terminal:

1) Start from scratch

2) Insert an example configuration and adapt it to users needs
(insert a template)
3) Upload the configuration from a terminal
(only for terminal versions >=2.3)

Set-up communication

Correct communication settings

must be entered in CAP 540
in order to be able to
communicate with the
terminal.
Communication settings must be
entered in CAP 540, from the
project tree:

Select the Station and then the

menu Communication
Settings

Set-up communication

Each terminal has a SPA address

(slave number). From the HMI it
is possible to know which slave
number has the terminal:
Configuration
TerminalCom
SpaCom
Front.

Default number is 30.

Such address can be entered by

right-clicking on the terminal
and choosing Properties /

Configuration from scratch

1) Open project EVA from CAP 540 and start the configuration tool
CAP 531 from REL 511 *2.3 in Line Bay.
2) Insert a worksheet called LOGIC1
3) Communicate with the terminal and run Upload Options
4) Run Function Selector / Uploaded Data
5) Insert the binary input card (BIM function block) in the work sheet
6) Insert the binary output card (BOM function block) in the work
sheet
7) Insert also the BIO card mounted on the power supply module.
8) Connect binary input 1 and binary input 2 of BIM to an OR gate
9) Connect the output of the OR gate to binary output 1 of BOM
10) Assign the correct slot position to the I/O cards (function block
SLOT POSITION is provided for this purpose)

Exercise 2a

11) Remember to assign a logic state to all function inputs not used
(function block FIXED SIGNALS, FIXD, is provided for this
purpose)
12) Compile your configuration
13) Download your configuration
14) Activate binary input N. 1 and check that binary output 1
operates
15) Activate binary input N.2 and check that binary output 1
operates
16) Check the proper functionality of your configuration by using
the On Line / Debug feature of CAP 531.

UPLOAD OPTIONS and FUNCTION SELECTOR

This function needs communication with the terminal. By running

Upload Options the function library in CAP 531 will be
updated to match the library installed in the terminal you are
communicating with.

During Upload Options also the information about the installed I/O
cards is uploaded, but the respective function blocks are not
added in the library until Function Selector / Uploaded Data is
performed.

After Upload Options and Function Selector are performed,

CAP library contains only the functions and the I/O cards
installed in your terminal.

FIXED SIGNALS

This function block provides generation for

logical signals TRUE and FALSE.
Variables TRUE can be connected to output
FIXED ON and variable FALSE can be
connected to output FIXED OFF.

Different names can be given to TRUE and

FALSE signals like 1 and 0 or ON
and OFF.

SLOT POSITION

The block I/OPosition permits to assign the slot

position to the I/O cards installed in the terminal.

It is very important to assign the correct slot to the

correct card, otherwise after the downloading of the
configuration the self supervision of the terminal will
detect an inconsistency and the terminal will be put
in BLOCKED STATUS.

(At that point a correct configuration should be

downloaded again in order to solve the problem)

QUESTION
THE TERMINAL IS NOT AVAILABLE,
HOW CAN I RUN
UPLOAD OPTIONS AND FUNCTION SELECTOR
IN ORDER TO MAKE MY ENGINEERING JOB IN THE
OFFICE?
UPLOAD OPTIONS:
ABB AUTOMATION PRODUCTS can provide you with a file
containing all the functions installed in your terminal. The
only data required from you is the serial number or the
ordering number of the terminal. Insert the disk and run
(EDIT / TERMINAL OPTIONS).
FUNCTION SELECTOR:
Instead of choosing Uploaded Data in function selector, the
I/O cards can be entered manually from the same page.
ABB Automation Technology

You have to know which cards will be installed in the

terminal (ordering sheet for instance).

Exercise 2b

Continue your configuration

1) Insert in your CAP project another worksheet called LOGIC2
2) Connect a variable called Switch_1 to binary input 1
3) Connect a variable called Switch_2 to binary input 2
4) In worksheet LOGIC2 make a function like this:
after 20 seconds from when both Switch_1 and Switch_2
are activated the binary output 2 will be activated (Hint: use
ON output from the timer: pick-up timer).
You will need another variable to activate binary output 2, in
worksheet Logic I/O from the worksheet LOGIC_1.
5) Make all variables CROSS-REFERENCED
6) Compile and download the configuration
7) Check the configuration with CAP ON LINE
8) Check that the variables are cross-referenced by choosing
File / Preview and choose to print cross references.

CROSS REFERENCES

If you want a variable to be

cross-referenced in CAP
print-out, just drag the
variable to cross the red
dashed line shown by
CAP 531 when you
choose the menu
Layout / Page
Borders.

TIMERS

There are different type

of timers. Some of them
are settable by
configuration only.

Some of them are settable

by the HMI or PST (from
version 2.3 of REL
terminals).

Exercise 2c
Better understanding of
UPLOAD OPTIONS and FUNCTION SELECTOR
1) From CAP 540 add another REL 511 *2.3 terminal under
Line_Bay.
2) Start the configuration tool CAP 531 for the new terminal.
3) Insert a worksheet called TEST
4) DO NOT run Upload Options
5) DO NOT Run Function Selector / Uploaded Data
6) Insert in the work sheet the following function blocks: DIFL
TR01, ZM1,IOP1
7) Delete the work sheet TEST
8) Communicate with the terminal and RUN Upload Options and
Function Selector / Uploaded Data
9) Insert the work sheet TEST again
10) Insert in the work sheet the following function blocks: DIFL
