Welcome to ShelbyKY and the 27th Annual Shelbyville Horse Show!

Thank you for choosing to spend your time with us as we usher in 2017s colorful and lively
Horse Show. As the officially designated American Saddlebred Capital of the World, you
might suspect that we love our horses here in Shelby County and youd be right! We also love
to show them off and the Shelbyville Horse Show is the perfect way to see these high-stepping
beauties in action.

During your stay, we hope you pencil in a few other activities on your itinerary. You may want
to visit Shelbyvilles gorgeous new Jeptha Creed Distillery and learn about the heirloom Bloody
Butcher Corn used in its moonshine, vodka and bourbon. Love to shop? We have Kentuckys
only designer outlet mall here in Simpsonville at the Outlet Shoppes of the Bluegrass. We also
have lots of independently owned shops and boutiques in Shelbyvilles charming downtown, as
well as shops for the horsey set: Metzgers Country Store, Shelby Horse Supply and An
Equestrians Touch.

Shelby County is not a place where youll go hungry. We have delis, cafs, neighborhood
bakeries and coffeehouses and restaurants known for comfort food and classic Kentucky fare
like the delectable Hot Brown such as Bell House, Science Hill Inn Dining Room, Claudia
Sanders Dinner House and the newly reopened historic Old Stone Inn. Theres also Mexican,
Chinese and Japanese cuisine and lots and lots of barbecue.

Shelby County has beautiful parks for hiking, golfing and horseback riding and the pristine Lake
Shelby and beautiful Guist Creek Lake for boating and fishing. When youre all tuckered out,
Shelby County has the bed and breakfast, loft or brand name hotel for you for a restful nights
sleep.

We wish you a wonderful visit in our community and we hope to see you again next year.

Cheers!

PERPETUAL TROPHY
FIVE GAITED AMATEUR

Leilani Weiss Reynolds

JANUARY 6, 1946 - OCTOBER 20, 1998
Leilani Weiss Reynolds was born and
raised in Carbondale, Illinois where she
attended Southern Illinois University.
She met her future husband Edward W.
Reynolds in 1976. Edward Reynolds was
then the President of Chicago Horsemans
Benevolent and Protection Association.
Leilani served as the Executive Secretary
and to quote Ed She ran the whole thing!

They were married in a ceremony outside

Carbondale in 1979 and she came to
Ivy Gate Farm on Highway 60 West in
Shelbyville as a new bride in that same year.
She remained there working with horses
they boarded and trained until 1997. She
was often heard to say how very much she
had come to love the farm and Shelby
County.

Leilani was one of the original volunteers of

the Shelbyville Horse Show and a 1997 served as Chairperson of the horse show. At the same time, she
was an Executive with the Shelby Development Corporation and took great pride in her work with the
communitys growth and development. She received the Wakefield Scearce Friend of the Horse Show
Perpetual Trophy and 1998 and in 1999 the Shelbyville Horse Show was dedicated in her honor.

Leilani loved horses and everything that had anything to do with them. She worked tirelessly at any job
she attempted and achieved incredible results. She was someone that others always found easy to work
with. Her patience, attitude, and optimism made her a very special person.

She was a joy to her family, friends, and all that knew her. She is truly missed.

It is with great pride that we dedicate the five gated amateur class in loving memory of Leilani Weiss
Reynolds.

PERPETUAL TROPHY
LADIES FIVE GAITED

Kathryn B. Hornback
APRIL 12, 1927 - JANUARY 14, 2007
Kathryn was a native of Shelbyville, the
daughter of Wallace and Rosalee Kuhn
Bodkin. She was married to Bob Hornback
for almost 53 years. Together they raised
three children, Steve, Paul, and Mary Ann.
She had four grandchildren and three
great-grandchildren.

Kathryn was a retired cashier and

teller from the old Bank of Shelbyville,
working there for over 27 years. She
was a dedicated homemaker and
actively assisted Bob in the daily farming
operation.

Kathryn was a strong community supporter.

She was a member of the Catholic Church
of the Annunciation and a member of
Saint Annes Alter Society. She was actively
involved in the Shelby County Extension
and 4-H program, volunteering in many
areas. She enjoyed her involvement with the Shelby County fair and Horse Show. She was secretary for
Floral Hall for over 40 years.

Kathryn greatly enjoyed the Shelbyville Horse Show. She and Bob looked forward to attending each
year, visiting with old friends and making new ones.
She was a great ambassador for Shelbyville, always welcoming new people to the community with her
warm and caring smile. She would always go out of her way to help anyone. She was known for her
hospitality and caring, and her willingness to give to, and serve others.

Kathryn died January 14, 2007. The loss of her smiling face and laughter will be greatly missed.

23
PERPETUAL TROPHY
LADIES THREE GAITED

Chris Field
DECEMBER 9, 1949 - APRIL 6, 2009
Chris Fields love of horses was apparent
at a very young age. At the age of two
she was already climbing her father
fences and jumping on the back of any
horse that happened to pass by. Later,
as a child, she caught the bug to ride
jumpers. She taught all of her fathers
prized cutting horses to go over fences
until he finally went and bought her an
actual jumper so she would leave his
horses alone.

That love of jumpers eventually lead

to owning one of the loves of her life,
Bingo the Intruder quote. Together
they won many Championships and
beat the great Fleet Apple many
times.

in 1974 she married a long time

childhood friend and love of her life, Bill Fields, where her love of horses grew to the American
Saddlebred. She showed such horses as RWC Warrick Warrior, CH Kiwi, WC Callaways Magic
Dawn and eventually her next love RWGC CH Rejoice. She and Rejoice won Championships at Shelby
County Fair, Lawrenceburg, Lexington, Shelbyville, and Kentucky State Fair.

Chris love of her horses was only eclipsed by her love of her husband of almost 35 years, Bill, their son
John, his wife Tara, and of course her grandsons. If you knew Chris at all you were well aware of her
love of Aidan and Brock. Although Chris never met her last grandson, Connal, his willingness to crawl
into the horses pasture shows that they have the same spirit.

Chris unfortunately lost her battle with cancer in 2009. The Field Family loves and misses her every day
and donate the trophy for this class in her memory.

24
PERPETUAL TROPHY
AMATEUR FINE HARNESS STAKE

Suscan Olcott - Big Brown Bess

NOVEMBER 9, 1936 - MARCH 13, 1998
Susan Olcott passed
away in 1998, but for
those who knew and
loved her, her memory
will last a lifetime!

Susan loved her friends

and when she became
your friend, it was
forever. But above all
else, Susan loved her
horse passionately.
A lifelong amateur
exhibitor, she was
also one of the most
successful breeders in
a very short time. Her
most beloved Show
horse was BIG BROWN
BESS who was a four-
time World Champion
Harness Horse and later
produced two World
Champion Weanlings, a feat never before achieved.

Susans dry since of humor, her affection and loyalty for her friends, and her love for all horses will never
be forgotten by all who knew her. She always told the truth whether you wanted to hear it or not but
the truth about her is that Susan Olcott was one great lady.

25
PERPETUAL TROPHY
AMATEUR ROADSTER
TO BIKE STAKE STAKE

Cordy Armstrong
JULY 25, 1932 - JULY 25, 2011
Cordys first chance
to see a Road Horse
class was in the
1930s, when his dad
took Cordy and his
older brother, Murray,
to the Shelby County
Fair in Shelbyville,
Kentucky. He sat both
of them on his knee
and tried to keep
them preoccupied by
telling them the most
exciting class of the
evening, the Road
Horse class, would be
in soon. When Cordy
saw the class, he fell
in love with the Road
Horse.

It would be 1961
when Cordy would own and show his first Road Horse at the age of 29. J.R. Jennings of Shelbyville,
Kentucky sold two sisters, Bay Patty and Valvola, to Cordy and his brother and Murray. They showed
these two great mares for many years and won just about every County Fair Championship in Kentucky
and part of Ohio. Other horses along the way Cordy showed with success were; Country Boy, Importer,
Midnight Express, Hias Mahogany Lad, Hia Time, and Mr. Glory B. Cordys love and enthusiasm for
showing Road Horses lasted nearly 50 years

BERTS TROPHY
SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD

The Roberta Bert Eddington

SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD
For almost 40 years during her time with
Citizen Union Bank, Berts impact on the
Saddlebred community of Shelby County
was tremendous.

Much more than just their banker, she

was a friend to the horseman, amateur
and professional alike. She understood
their unique needs and the quirks of this
peculiar business. Countless times she
came through for those who needed a
little help, a little more time. There are any
number of horseman today who could not
have made it without Berts backing and
support. From the amateurs to the trainers,
the farriers, vets, and caretakers, Bert was,
and is, the Horsemans friend. In honor of
her, the Shelbyville Horse Show is proud
to present the Roberta Bert Eddington
sportsmanship award. Berts trophy will
be presented annually to an individual
amateur or professional whose attitude reflects that of the trophys namesake. Each year, Berts trophy
will go to a good sport!

OPEN HACKNEY PONY

Edward L. Frickey
DIED NOVEMBER 24, 2006

Edward L., Frickey owned and showed Hackney Ponies and American Saddlebred Horses, moving to
Shelbyville because of this love.

Showing for over 35 years was only part of Eds life. He absolutely enjoyed all of the people in the horse
industry to the fullest. Moving to the Saddlebred Capital of the World was as exciting to him as all
the Worlds Championships he had won.

Roy Barlow
NOVEMBER 12, 1912 - FEBRUARY 8, 2005
Roy Barlow was born in Hancock County,
Kentucky on November 12, 1912. After
graduating from Western Kentucky State
Teachers College in 1941, he came
to Shelbyville with his wife Fletcher to
get a teaching job in the Shelbyville
school system. For 40 years he taught
mathematics and industrial arts in the
Shelbyville and Jefferson County school
systems. Mr. Barlows greenhouse
hobby morphed into a business upon his
retirement from teaching, and he carried
on the operation until the age of 89. Many
of the flowers decorating the show ring
have come from his greenhouses.

Mr. Barlow died on February 8, 2005,

and is survived by two children, three
grandchildren and one great grandchild.
He always had a houseful of company
when Horse Show time rolled around, and
his two granddaughters actively participate
in the show.

For being a great friend of the Shelbyville Horse Show, it is our pleasure to dedicate the Roadster Pony
Championship to Mr. Barlow.

Helen and Charles Crabtree

Helen and Charles Crabtree established Crabtree Farms in Simpsonville, Shelby County in 1957. At that
time Charles Heddens Twin Springs Farm was actively producing and showing American Saddlebred
Horses. Jane Meyers Undulata farm was
winding down after a long successful time
in the sport and the show ring. By choosing
Shelby County for its first public stable,
the Crabtrees pioneered the Saddle Horse
Capitol of the World.

Crabtree Farm represented Simpsonville,

Shelby County in horse shows and
exhibitions in Canada, France, New York,
California, Florida and virtually all the
places that held show horse competitions
in the continental United States. Many
times, with two divisions of Crabtree farms,
they and their customers exhibited as many
as 60 horses.

Their reputation became riders and horses

that won world and national championships
in all phases of the show horse industry.

Their legacy of breeding Yorktown, New

Yorker, Harlem Globetrotter, Supreme Heir
and Denmarks Bourbon Genius will last to
infinity.

Helen and Charles Crabtree loved

Simpsonville, Shelby county so much
they chose to be and are interned in
Simpsonville.

It is fitting that they were honored with this memorial in their 50th year in Shelby county.

PERPETUAL TROPHY
ADULT COUNTRY PLEASURE
CHAMPIONSHIP

Louis B. Payne
Talk about agriculture in Shelby County for very long
and eventually the name Louis Payne will come up.
Payne, a farmer ahead of his time, fellow farmers
would say. Payne was the producer of some of the
1914-2006 highest quality Burley in the state. Payne, breeder of
state fair champion Duroc hogs. Payne, the man who
cooked beans in the iron pot at Fall Cities Pork Producers Association gatherings. Payne, the farmer
with dozens of plaques and awards on this wall
and in drawers at his home on Zaring Mill Road.
"Im told Louis Payne was one of the best
farmers in the country, said horse breeder and
neighbor Edward R. Hoppy Bennett. Bennett
has a chair with Mr. Payne's name on it in his
barn where the old farmer came at least once a
week to watch the Saddlebred's train.
Mr. Payne grew up on a farm on Mount Eden
Road. He had a chance to go to college, he
said, but "I knew what I wanted to do".
Payne married Eloise Wakefield and the couple
rented a small farm on the McMakin-McMullin
Road. In 1938, Mr. Payne moved his wife and
two daughters (now Sarah Igleheart and Deanie
Logan) to the farm on Zaring Mill Road.
Though Mr. Payne never went to college,
he tapped the brains of the experts at the
University of Kentucky College of Agriculture
in beef cattle, hogs and tobacco to learn the latest agricultural techniques. I camped out on the back
step, Mr. Payne said.
Payne also raised prize-winning Duroc hogs on his farm. One year, he raised the champion Duroc and
the largest hog at the state fair. He won several contests for grain growing on his farm, including the
Shelby County Corn Derby and Pearce Motor Trophy for his corn. He was the first farmer in the county
to raise 100 bushels of corn per acre. He also raised as much as 189 per acre during the period when
farmers in the state where averaging just over half of that. Some of the corn went to fatten 100 steers
Payne and his son-and-law would raise and sell.
But Payne kept up with the changes in Shelby Countys agriculture. The growth of horse farming, he
said, is good for the county. Tobacco is fading out. We cant compete with farms in the Midwest for
grain. Horses are good for Shelby county. Horse people take good care of the land, their farms and
fences.
Family and friends remember Mr. Payne for his love of people, old rocks fences, holly trees, growing
and giving away dahlias, and most of all farming the good earth.

PERPETUAL TROPHY
JUNIOR THREE GAITED STAKE

Robert Samples
March 2004, the Shelbyville Horse Show lost a good
friend with the death of Robert Samples at the age of
51. Robert was a breeder of prize Hereford for cattle
and, with his wife Kathy, owner of KMR farm. He was
DIED MARCH 2004 a businessman and a long time magistrate on Shelby
County Fiscal Court.
We do not know if Robert ever owned a horse. We do not know if Robert ever rode a horse. We
do not know if Robert even liked horses.
But we do know that Robert, as a farmer,
businessman, and politician, was a forward
thinker who knew the importance of horses
and the Shelbyville Horse Show to this
community. He saw the potential for the
horse industry in the community and was
a strong supporter of our show. Robert
helped the Horse Show every year in ways
big and small. He was a behind-the-scenes
man who helped wherever and whenever
asked without making a big to-do.
"Robert was the kind of guy who
came and found you in the ditch and rolled
up the sleeves and got down in the ditch
with you" said Horse Show organizer RH
Bennett. Bennett added that Robert always
insisted that the work be done well the first
time. "Fix it one time and be done with
it, is the way Bennett described Roberts
approach to a task.
But Robert was more than a
supporter of the show and the horse industry. Robert was also an advocate for youth. He was a fixture at
Youth Livestock shows every year, where he worked with his own children as well as dozens of children
in the community on their steer projects. The Shelbyville public schools named Robert Samples their
Volunteer of the Year in 2003. He believed in the importance of the youth of our community and backed
up his beliefs with hard work. "Robert Samples loves doing things for the kids, said Bagdad Roller Mills
General Manager, Bill Tucker. For Samples commitment to the youth of our community, we are making a
permanent dedication of the Three-Gaited Junior Horse class to the memory of Robert Samples.
As this years Shelbyville Horse Show gets underway, we can only hope that our riders, trainers,
grooms, judges, show organizers and guests exhibit the same quiet, hard-working enthusiasm for our
sport Robert Samples showed for the many facets of his life.

Edwin W. Hall
A love of community is what made
Edwin W. Hall special. Native Shelby
Countian, Mr. Hall was one of those unique
individuals that made it clear to everyone
where he stood on any issue. It was an
attribute that led him to be a significant
leader in the community.

Having served in World War II, he became

noted in this community while operating
his own business for 52 years. Halls name
lives on in the business at North 7th St. as
Hall and Davis Lumber Company is still in
operation. During those business years, he
served as president of the Kentucky Retail
Lumber Dealers Association and president
of the local Chamber of Commerce.
Mr. Hall was also a former president of
the Shelbyville Rotary club and president
of Shelby County Savings and Loan today
known as Fifth Third Bank. Probably one
of his favorite community service activities
was serving as vice-president of the Shelby
County Industrial Foundation.

Much can be said for Edwin Halls

commitment to his community. He took
great pride in his hometown and the
events that make it unique. One of those
events is the Shelbyville Horse Show.
Having been a staunch supporter of the Horse Show since its beginning, it is with great pride that we
dedicate this class to Edwin Wilkinson Hall.

TWO-YEAR-OLD
THREE-GAITED STAKE

Martha Neel Riester

DIED APRIL 2006
Martha Neal Riester was born in Carlisle County,
Kentucky and her childhood was spent in Fancy Farm,
Kentucky. She had cousins who lived in Shelbyville that
she loved dearly and said she often thought if only I
could get to Shelby County, I would be in heaven.
In 1931 she went to work at Saint Josephs
infirmary in Louisville, met a declared bachelor, Paul
Riester, won his heart, married, and moved to Finchville
in 1936. She embraced Finchville and Finchville
embraced her. She lived there the remainder of her years
and entered into eternal life April of 2006.
Martha and Paul have five children. Martha
Gene (Jim Downs), Nancy (Redd Crabtree), Judy (Ralph
McCurdy), Bob and Vance (Janice). Her extended family
included 11 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, a
host of other family members, neighbors and friends, all
of whom she cherished.
Martha was a skilled homemaker, faithful member
of the Catholic Church of the Annunciation, an active
supporter of the Shelby County Community Theater, and
a cheerleader of all causes she deemed good.
Martha said she loved "sewing and going".
She also loved her God, anything family, Kentucky
basketball, a day at Churchhill downs, canasta, and friends. She kept her spirit young by actively and
enthusiastically supporting all of the above.
Martha Riester caught the spirit of the Shelbyville Horse Show from the very beginning. It
was a community spirit from the start. Not a horse person, she was excited to know that there was
something she could do to help out. Martha loved the time she spent with family and friends making
table coverings and creating centerpieces for the Horsemans club. She loved watching the horse show,
especially her family members, as well as riders from the community and across the county that she
had come to know. However, if Redd or Casey had a horse in the ring, she saw no other. She loved the
excitement of them the row and visited Shelby Horse Supply (Vance and Janice) nightly. And she loved
the corn dogs!

James Thomas Horn

AUGUST 11, 1929 - JUNE 5, 2012
James Thomas Horns was born in
Louisville, Kentucky on August 11,
1929. He was the oldest of nine
children. His family moved to a farm
in Finchville in 1945 and he graduated
from Finchville High School in 1947. While working in the Louisville, he met Suzanna Roederer and they
married on July 22, 1949. They were married by a young Wayne Ward (who in later years would say
when I tied that knot, I really tied it!)
Jimmy and Susie along with their two
children, Thomas and Mary Lou, moved back to
Finchville in 1968. Jimmy worked as a barber and
an automotive salesman for Sears until he retired.
He then worked for Dr. Allen Honaker doing
handyman jobs and yardwork.
Jimmy and family loved to go camping with
neighbors Bud, Frances and Peggy Henry and
Gussie and Lynn Rhodes. Many wonderful trips
and memories we shared by all. He also enjoyed
fishing whenever he had the chance. Jimmy was
an avid reader. There are very few books in the
library that he had not read or listened to on tape.
While on a trip to the Smokies, Jimmy discovered
the Dulcimer. He purchased a kit to make his first
one and learned how to play it. He then decided
he could make a better one. He did and went on
to make over 100 of them. He also made quite
a few tiny tables after meeting and becoming
friends with Con West, who showed him how to
make them.
After about becoming acquainted with the Bennett family and American Saddlebred horses
through Mary Lous care of Tate, Jimmy would help RH, Hoppy and Leslie do whatever was needed
to get the fairgrounds show ready from putting up flags and name plates, to hanging flower pots
around the arena, to putting up underpinning around the show office before it was a permanent
structure, to anything else that was asked of him. He even made a few tiny tables that were given as
trophies.
Until ill health the last couple years kept him from coming, Jimmy and Family could be found
in their box cheering on Tate, Jane, Hoppy, Leslie, Chris and all other riders and trainers that they
met through the years. Jimmy was 82 1/2 years old when he died on June 5, 2012. He is survived
by Susie, his wife of 62 1/2 years; son Thomas (Barbara) and daughter Mary Lou. He is also survived
by his adopted granddaughter, Tate Bennett and his grandson, David Henderson (Angie) and two
great granddaughters, Kirsten and Taylor. He is also survived by four sisters and numerous nieces and
nephews.

Lee "Sug" Conn Schusterman

SEPTEMBER 23, 1940 - MAY 2, 2012 Sug Schusterman loved the
Shelbyville Horse Show. She and
husband Dan have been major supporters of the show for over 20 years. She loved horses, she loved
Shelbyville, she loved the show. The show was fortunate to have her on the team for all those years.
Sug will always be remembered for her generosity from the heart. She was a loyal friend, and always
willing to give of herself and to serve. She was gentle
and kind to everyone she met. Her touch, her smile, her
laughter endeared her to all. She accomplished much in
her life but nothing was greater than her joy in living and
caring. Her beautiful smile and gracious charm will be
missed by all of us.
A native of Kentucky, she graduated Phi Beta
Kappa from Eastern New Mexico University. Representing
New Mexico, she was a finalist in the Miss America
Pageant. While living in New York she had a long career in
the fashion industry representing such notable designers
as Carl Lagerfeld, Ungaro and Luis Feruad. After years
of extended international and domestic business travel,
she returned to her beloved Kentucky in the mid-1980s
and worked in corporate development for the Louisville
Theatrical Association and was director of Community/
Public Relations for the Camberly Brown Hotel.
She was best known for her philanthropic service to
many Greater Louisville and Shelby County arts and health
agencies. At various times she served on the boards of the
Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts, Kentucky Opera,
Louisville Ballet, Louisville Theatrical Association, the Derby Museum and the American Red Cross. She
was a member of the Fincastle chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
With her husband Dan, they chaired the Kentucky Operas Hard Scuffle Steeplechase for two
years and have been involved and supported the Shelbyville Horse Show since it began. She also
chaired the Louisville Antique, the Louisville Theatrical Associations Phantom of the Opera Ball, raised
record-breaking funds for the 2005 Kentucky Derby Museum Gala and as co-chair for the capital
campaign for the Louisville Deaf Oral school, raised over $8 million to build a new school and create
the Heuser Hearing Institute. She also served as a member of the board of the Institute and as chairman
several years.
She was recipients of the Deep Roots Award for community service in 2004 and she and Dan received

Jimmy Jack Hardin Bennett

Jimmy Jack Hardin became part of the Bennett family in the early 1950s. Jimmy Harden arrived around
the time that Edward Hoppy Bennett
was born and quickly became a brother to
Hoppy and the other five minute children
at the time; Mr. and Mrs. Bennett would
have three more children to complete their
family of 10.

In later years, Jimmy Hardin Bennett would

marry and have 2 children of his own,
Diane and DeWayne. He was a valued
employee at General Electric for many
years and also served in the Armed Forces.

Jimmy would return to the Bennetts to

help care for Mr. J. Edward Bennett prior
to his death and would stay to help care
for Mrs. Bennett while she remained
living in the family home. More recently
Jimmy was living at Undulata Farm near
his brother Hoppy and also Mrs. Bennett.
He assisted Hoppy by handling many of
the responsibilities at Undulata; he would
often be seen giving tours of the farms to
visitors, hauling horses to horse shows and
running errands. He was also an integral
part of the Shelbyville Horse Show. He
would deliver tickets, run the water truck
and made many, many trips to town for
needed supplies.

Jimmy was very proud of the Bennett

family and would sign his name J.H.
Bennett #10.

Jimmy will be missed in many ways during this and all the future Shelbyville Horse Shows.

PERPETUAL TROPHY
THREE GAITED OPEN STAKE

Mr. & Nrs. J. Edward Bennett

NOVEMBER 12, 1912 - FEBRUARY 8, 2005
Two of the greatest supporters of the Shelbyville Horse Show were one of its originators, Mr. J. Edward
Bennett and his wife, Tate Edelen Bennett, one of the shows biggest fans. They were both horse
enthusiasts who enjoyed with their family a variety of horse
sports that included not only American Saddlebred's but also
Thoroughbreds and various draft breeds. The continuous
impact of Mr. and Mrs. Bennett on the Shelbyville Horse
Show can be witnessed each year through the tireless efforts
of their sons, RH and Edward Hoppy" Bennett. As the
younger Bennetts work on the Horse Show, the admonition
handed down from their father concerning the "right way
to do things" still rings through their heads and affects their
every action.
Mr. J. Edward Bennett was a native of Spencer County
and was born October 21, 1915. Throughout his life, Mr.
Bennett had a deep involvement in agriculture. He was
president of the Nelson County Tobacco Cooperative Board
and president of the Falls City Milk Producers and KYANA
Milk Producers Associations. Mr. Bennett was President of
the Bluegrass Horse Pullers Association, the founder of the
Worlds Largest Horse Pull.
Mrs. Tate Bennett was a native of Nelson County. Mrs.
Bennett was active in a variety of civic and political activities
that spanned several decades. She was a staunch supporter
and organizer in President John Kennedy's election in 1960.
Her efforts culminated in the special invitation to the Kennedy Inauguration and Ball. In recent years,
Mrs. Bennett served on the Boards of Directors of Saint Catherine's College and the Stephen Foster
Drama. She was one of the original supporters of the home health organization, Caritas.
Mr. Bennett received his formal education from Saint Joseph Preparatory School in Bardstown
and Saint Xavier in Cincinnati. For many years, he was Vice President of J. A. Bennett Inc. of Taylorsville.
Mrs. Bennett graduated from Bethlehem High school and Nazareth College. The Bennetts were active
members of the Church of the Annunciation.
The Bennetts had 10 children. Two children, an adopted son, Jimmy Harden, and natural son
J.A. are deceased. The eight surviving natural children are: James Junior of Los Angeles California;
Edward Hoppy, RH, Anne Tate Puljanowski, and Noni all of Shelbyville; Barbara Bennett and Susan
Reagan both of Lexington, and Hallie Reiling of Seattle, Washington.

Leukemia in February 2002, Wayne Shuck decided
that he would not only defeat this disease, but
through his strength and courage, inspire everyone
around him.

After enduring three rounds of
chemotherapy in 2002, his leukemia returned in
February 2003. The day that he found out that the
AML had returned, Wayne still attended the tractor
pull at the Farm and Machinery show because he
did not want anyone to worry. When Wayne told his
kids about the return of the disease, he told them
not to cry and that he would kick cancers ass.

Wayne had his first bone marrow transplant
on June 6, 2003. Still recovering from the bone
marrow transplant that had just been completed at
5:00 PM, Wayne still tried to convince his doctors
to let him attend his eldest daughters high school
graduation at 8:00 PM that night. When he was in
the hospital, Wayne went on daily walks to maintain
his strength and determination. One of the most
inspiring things about Waynes determinations
to exercise is that he encouraged fellow cancer patients to walk as well. Every day Wayne would walk
door-to-door in the cancer unit, asking patients if they wished to join him on his walk. By the time that
he left the University of Louisville Hospital, there were four patients who went on walks every day.
During this time, Wayne also asked his daughters to help him write a book after he became well "telling
people with cancer to fight it and not give up".

Wayne was determined to make his hospital stay as normal as possible for his family members
and friends. He kept his cell phone with him (against hospital orders), and spent much of his day
coordinating business and real estate transactions. He also kept cards in his hospital room, and many
afternoons Waynes family played Uno and Rook. When Wanye lost a game, he would jokingly say he
57
could not believe his family would take advantage of him when he was medicated.

Although Wayne endured seven rounds of chemotherapy, two bone marrow transplants, and
two staph infections, his greatest obstacle came when he moved Seattle to attend the prestigious Fred
Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. When his kids came to visit, he would say "this is just another
challenge", and repeatedly assure them that he would not give up his fight. He made his children
promise him that if he was lying in bed, to not let him lay there, but instead make him get up and walk.

After being told that there was nothing that could be done for him in Seattle, Wayne returned to
Kentucky. He returned to Norton Hospital for some time, before returning to spend the rest of his time
at home. Even when Wayne was at his weakest, he told everyone that "I'm not going to die until it's my
time to die, and I might not go then."

Although Wayne passed away on August 19, 2004, he was not defeated by leukemia. By
maintaining a positive attitude and his faith in God, he was a role model for family, friends, fellow
cancer patients, and members of this community. The bravery and determination that Wayne exhibited
throughout his life have made Wayne an enduring legacy of strength. The struggle to fight AML
showed his unflagging desire to embrace life and live it to its utmost capacity, even in times of great
struggle. Though Wayne is no longer with us, he will not be forgotten.

Frances Henry
Frances Henry loved the Shelby County
community. She was always involved in
the community working at Reister & Co in
Finchville and at Roses Inc. in Shelbyville.
She was a band parent and supporter of
the "Life Singers", an interdenominational
interracial youth choir, and the Shelby
County High School Rocket Booster for
more than 25 years. She was also a true
blue University of Kentucky fan. Frances
was also a member of the Finchville
Homemakers for more than 50 years and
Finchville Bunco club for more than 40
years.

When the Bennetts got a group of

people together to ask for help to start
the Shelbyville Horse Show, she and her
husband Bud jumped in with both feet.
The first few years they were both very
involved with set up, clean up, and making
and serving food in the hospitality tent. As
years passed the show grew up. After Bud
passed away, Frances stayed very involved
by coming every day to help with the
preparations for the hospitality tent. She loved to watch the horse show and was pretty good at picking
the winners of each class. She enjoyed watching the Horse Show grow and especially enjoyed watching
young ride like Tate Bennett and Casey Crabtree grow and mature. She was very proud of the fact that
she could say she was a part of the Shelbyville Horse Show.

Robert and Rannie Doyle

Robert and Rannie Doyle were
delighted in the summer of 1990 when
the first annual Shelbyville Horse Show
became a reality. Each evening at the
Horse Show, ever year until their deaths,
they could be found supporting what they
recognized to be an important event in
Shelbyville.
Supporting important events in
Shelby County and the people involved
in those events was a characteristic of
Robert and Rannie. Although they had no
children, they were active members of the
Shelby County Booster Club. The Rannie
Doyle Memorial Scholarship which awards
college funds each year to a deserving
senior athlete from Shelby County High
School was created after her death. As
loyal fans of the Rockets and Lady Rockets,
they were usually attending when Shelby
County played any sport. They were also
fans of the American Legion Baseball
program and the Shelby County Theater.
Robert, a native of Shelby County,
and Rannie of Henry County, were married
May 22, 1940 and made their home on the Doyle Family Farm in Finchville. They were members of
the Finchville Baptist Church. Rannie enjoyed working at the LaFayette Galleries during their years in
Lexington and at Wakefield Scearce Galleries upon their return home. Robert used his training as a
civil engineer in many projects. He worked at one time for the Kentucky Highway Department and later
for the U.S. Soil Conservation Service in Lexington. He built the Finchville Water System and actively
participated during the planned and construction of the Shelby County High School athletic complex
and fieldhouse, as well as the golf course at Clear Creek Park.
Rannie died November 25, 1992 at the age of 77, and Robert on February 28, 1997 at the age
of 89. They are survived by a newphew. John Doyle Wilson of Finchville, and nieces Jo Ann Mathis of
Shelbyville and Nancy Jo Payne of New Liberty and 9 great-nieces and nephews.
They will long be missed by their family and their many friends of all ages in Shelby County.

Nancy & Redd Crabtree

In 2016 the Shelbyville
Horse Show presented the
inaugural Nancy and Redd
Crabtree Perpetual Memorial
Trophy in the Five-Gaited
Stake.

A fitting tribute to a pair

that exemplified the spirit
of the community effort that
goes into producing the
horse show each year. Nancy
Crabtree was instrumental
in many of the behind
the scenes work in the
Horsemans Club. Since the
beginning of the show her
wonderful touches could be
found in the decorations-
always incorporating the
American Saddlebred and
Kentucky traditions in her
creations.

Redd Crabtree won the first

Five-Gaited Championship
at the Shelbyville Horse
Show in 1990 with the grand
mare Santana Lass. Horses either ridden or trained by Redd won the Five -Gaited Championship at
the Shelbyville Horse Show 4 times and in 1999 Redd won the Three-Gaited Two-Year-Old class with
Crabtree Farms bred-Swish.

Nancy and Redd were synonymous with the American Saddlebred in Shelbyville and Shelby County-
always here to support and help out in any way that they could to continue to produce the Shelbyville
Horse Show. Their love and support for the Shelbyville Horse Show inspired many friends and family
to attend and Catch The Excitement. We are pleased to present the Nancy and Redd Perpetual
