Introduction

SI Space Invader 01/2017

1
1.Introduction
EMPACT requests Space Invader Company to designed a prototype Mars
Rover for international space exploration consortium. According to Curtin Univers ity
(2017, p.2), the purpose of this project is to design and build a small size prototype
which is capable of deployment and withstanding a vertical drop. In this project, the
prototype is tested by rolling down a 2 meters slope with 30-45 degrees and a vertical
drop of 1 metre without manual control. Moreover, an egg which represent a human
astronaut and a 600ml water bottle represent a cargo. The cargo is required to be carried
as a weight for the prototype (Curtin University 2017, p.2). During the testing session,
the prototype must fall on the floor by standing on wheels in contact with the ground
without causing any damage to the cargo and the egg. This project comprised of 4 stages.
The first stage is the design package which demonstrate the entire process of designing
the car. This report contains the design drawings, design specifications, tender
evaluation criteria, risk management plan and the Gantt Chart.

3.3 Safety guide for constructor

The safety guide section in design specification is to give constructors the knowledge
and notice on using tools during construction stage.

The power drill can cause damages if uses wrongly that is why we have come
up with some safety precautions to prevent the contractors working in the
workshop from getting damaged.
For the tools that use electricity as a power, to prevent the contractors from
getting electrocuted they should inspect the electrical tools, and to prevent cuts
and getting pierced by the jigsaw, Utility Knife and the power drill, the
contractors working these tools must have a good knowledge of the tools and
should wear gloves and google as a safety precaution.
To avoid been injured by the screw drivers, the contractors must avoid
carrying them in their pockets and use the tool box. The contractors should
also avoid using the screw driver for any electrical work unless the
screwdriver is properly insulated.
To maintain accurate and proper readings from the callipers the constructor
must ensure that they were previously store properly and well maintained.

SI Space Invader 01/2017 21

5.1 Risk Management in Design Stage
Design stage is the fundamental of the entire project. In this stage, the awareness of
team members on hazards and risks that may occur are very crucial in the beginning of
the project. Some of the hazards listed are:

The important data loss due to the computer issues

Uncooperative team members
Miscommunication within the team members

During this stage, most of the progress for the project are highly reliable to
computer and software. Early precaution should be taken to avoid any circumsta nces
such as computer automatically shut down which causes data loss. As a precaution,
team members are encouraged to save the updated data frequently. Furthermore, saving
the updated data in an uncorrupted USB flash drive is highly recommended.

Next, the issue of uncooperative team members is common in any group. This issue
usually arises when there are differences in the personality or behaviour of the team
members. This will affect the cooperation during the designing stage and can lead to a
huge pile of workloads that need to be completed before the deadline. In order to avoid
this issue, every task have to be divided equally among the team members to increase
the efficiency and quality of work.

Miscommunication among the team members could arise when the team members
have contradicting ideas. This issue may occur during the meeting session due to
different ideas and expectations within the team members. This will lead to low quality
of the designs and documentations of the project. Therefore, every member must focus
on their task that have been distributed by the leader and complete it before the deadline .

5.2 Risk Management in Construction stage.
In the construction stage, most of the hazards cause physical injuries that are either
minor or major, to anybody handling the tools and in the workshop.
Among these hazards are:

Sharp tools
Electrical tools
Splinters
During construction, the contractors will come across dangerous tools, like jig saw,
to cut the wood and the drill, to drill holes for the axle and the screws. If these tools are
not used properly they might cause minor injuries, like scratches and small cuts. In
serious cases, the contractors may experience deep cuts, while handling the jigsaw.
Therefore, it is advised that contractors working with such tools wear protective gloves,
and have read the instruction manual before operating the machine.
In addition, tools like the drill, that require an electrical power. Source to the
function, can also be dangerous as they may cause electrocution, when the electrical
tools contact with water or they are not properly maintained. Therefor before operating
an electrical tool make sure you dry your hands and inspect the tool thoroughly for any
defaults.
Another hazard, is, while drilling and sawing splitters might hit the eye of the people
around, that is why it is advise that all the contractors working in the workshop should
wear protective googles.

5.3 Risk Management in Testing stage
In the testing stage, the hazards may include the safety of the egg and the performance
of the prototype.
Hazards that may occur during testing:

The safety of the egg.

Prototype gets destroyed.
Prototype failure

During the testing stage, securing the egg is the most important task, as the egg
represents the astronaut. Therefore, to prevent the egg from falling off the egg holder
when the car drops, the contractors should add more sponge to ensure the egg is fixed
tightly, and if that does not help the designers should come up with a backup plan for
the egg holder.
In addition, the prototype might yet get destroyed, before the final testing, as the
body parts of the prototype might fall off when it comes into contact with the ground
after the one-meter drop. To prevent this from happening the contractors should consult
with the designers for backup plans and make sure the body parts are fully secured.

Finally, the prototype might fail to work during the testing stage, this might be
caused by the poor workmanship of the contractors, that is why it is advised that the
designers must make sure the prototype is built according to the specification given in
the design package before the testing.
*Inspect the prototype a few hours before the final test
