1. DIAGNOSTIC USE OF ACUIMAGE-01 DEVICE

1.1. The main blocks of AcuImage-01 device.

The device AcuImage-01 represents the high-voltage pulse generator with the
microprocessor management, intended for visualization of points with the least electric resistance
by means of their luminescence in high voltage corona discharge, and also, for realization of electro
puncture and air-ions therapy.
The device includes a power and control unit, positive and negative active electrodes and
two grounding electrodes: one for the patient and another for operator (fig. 1).

1.2. The Corona discharge the directed movement of aero-ions.

If between two electrodes which are taking place in air space, the voltage achieves the
certain level arises corona discharge, which represents the directed movement of the ionized
molecules of air.
Positive aero-ions fly towards a negative electrode, and negative aero-ions and electrons fly
towards a positive electrode (fig. 2).

Negative electrode Positive electrode

Figure 2. Ior-ions and their movement towards electrodes.

3
Dielectric medium located between electrodes, blocks movement of aero-ions. However if
there are sites of the decreased resistance, for example pores or defects the maximal concentration
of ions, is observed in the field of these highly conducting sites (fig 3).

has low resistance sites

Figure 3. Air-ions are moving via low resistance sites of dielectric medium.

1.3. AcuImage-01 - is a device for visualization of acupoints and skin zones, which
have the electrical resistance.

The earthed biological object covered with a thin dielectric medium (a paper, cotton fabric,
polyester film, etc), is located in an electrostatic field of the high-voltage corona discharge.
Power lines of the field are concentrated in the points of minimal electrical resistance on a surface
of bioobject. On border air dielectric occurs transformation of the corona discharge into the spark
discharge, thus there is a luminescence as a bluish light, and the patient feels weak pricking. The
greatest brightness of a luminescence is observed in the field of the maximal concentration of an
electrostatic field, i.e. above points of the minimal electric resistance. Diagnostic criteria are
brightness of a luminescence and time of a relaxation (fig. 4).

Figure 4. The AcuImage-01 device and physical principle of low resistance points

1.4. Structure and electrical characteristics of the skin.

4
The skin of the person and animals consists from epidermis and derma. Epidermis is
submitted by the stratified flat keratinized epithelium in which constantly there is cell updating and
specific cell differentiation - keratinization (fig 5).

Derma consists from papillary layer formed by a friable fibrous connecting tissue and the
reticular layer formed by a dense no formalized connecting tissue.
In the majority of sites of the skin sweat and sebaceous glands, roots of hair are settled
down in the reticular layer of the skin. Collagen fascicles of the reticular layer of derma proceed in
the fat hypodermic tissue layer [Histology, 2001].

Electric conductivity of living tissues is determined by concentration of ions and their

mobility. In an intercellular liquid with the maximal contents of ions specific electroconductivity is
high enough and makes 1 Sm m 1 (Simens on meter). Specific electroconductivity of the cell
membrane and endocellular membranes is about (1 3) 10-5 Sm m-1.

Figure 5. Structure of the skin (schema by E.Kotovsky).

Electroconductivity of the skin depends on its thickness, a condition of derivatives and

the contents of water. Thickness of epidermis in the majority of sites of a body makes 0,07 - 0,12

mm, and on palm and sole surfaces achieves 0,8 - 1,4 mm. The contents of water in a superficial

layer makes only 10 % of weight of cells, whereas in underlying layers up to 70 %. The area of

sweat glands and sebaceous glands, hair follicles on different sites of a body is non equal and

also makes 0,5 % of a surface of integuments. In view of these features specific

electroconductivity of separate sites of the skin essentially differs and achieves 103 2 102

Sm m1 [V.Bogolubov et al., 1999].

5
(a) (b)

Figure 6. Diffuse (a) and local (b) electroconductivity of the skin.

The researches which have been carried out in Russia and abroad, have shown, that
conductivity of the skin varies on a functional condition of various organs and an organism as a
whole. Changes of conductivity can be observed on any standard sites of the skin or on the sites of
skin known from traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) as acupoints and reflexogenic zones [R.Voll,
1960; J.Niboet, 1955; Y.Nakatany et al., 1977; F.Portnov, 1974, etc.] (fig. 6).

1.5. The main aspects of traditional Chinese medicine: acupoints, channels and Qi.

1.5.1. Acupoints.

The skin of the human and animal body is characterized by morphological and functional

heterogeneity (fig. 1.1). The same heterogeneity can be found in the bodies of plants and insects

[A.Zhirmunsky et al., 1981; D.Madoli, 1984].

Several days after death electrical heterogeneity of the skin can be detected yet

[A.Zhirmunsky et al., 1981; T.Croley, 1986; V.Goidenko et al., 1984]. Gradually the physic

parameters of the skin become equal, and electrical heterogeneity disappears, because of

autolisis process, which takes place in the cell after death.

In terms of TCM, the heterogeneity of skin is described as Skin regions, Acupoints,

Channels and Collaterals.

6
The basis of the acupoint is formed by the loose connective tissue with a large number of

nervous receptors, free nervous endings, a developed vascular system, cell elements containing

biologically active substances, and a lot of gap connections [N.Verzhbitskaya, 1980;

V.Mashansky, 1983] (fig. 6-7)

Electroconductivity of the skin varies from 1 to 2 MOm, but at the site of acupoints

entrance decreases till 20-60 KOm [A.Podshibiakin, 1960; F.Portnov, 1987; J.Niboyet, 1963;

J.Bossy, 1973].

1.5.2. System of the Channels or Meridians.

In accordance with the TOM theory Qi (energy) and Blood circulates in the human body
along the special pathways known as Channels and Collaterals.
What do terms channel or meridian mean?
The modern scientific methodology of study, supposes correlation between a specific
function and structure of any biologic object. Yet no specific structures have been revealed to
confirm channel up to now. That is why some authors consider, that the channel is an
imaginary line, which links points having similar functions. They consider, that the real connection
between these points is provided by the various structures of the nervous system. In this case one
may apply a term meridian [R.Durinian, 1981 et all].

But, sometimes, to the contrary, absence of the structure can support a new function. For
example, the door or window aperture, a gap etc. We could imagine the channels to be a
system of gaps, which are stretched out along the well know anatomical structures. The surface of
the muscles, bones, tendons, vessels and others form the external walls of the channels. These
gaps or channels are filled by fibrous connective tissue, electrolytes and structured molecules of
water [A.Umanskaya, 1984]. We suppose that it is enough to provide a function to conduct Qi.
This explanation is confirmed by the results obtained by a Korean doctor, Kim Bon Khan
[Kim Bon Khan, 1963] and correlated to the description given in the book of famous ancient
Chinese doctor Li Shi Zhen there are tunnels in the inside space of the body and a person who
looks inside mentally can light up them [Wu Jing, 2000].

It was revealed, on experiment, that informational interchange between cells is carried out
by the electromagnetic fields, at the range of 1011 1014 Hz [V.Kaznacheev et al., 1985; H.Frlich,

7
1988]. Yet it is known from physic that these high frequency waves can only be conducted by
wave-guide coreless dielectric wave-guide.
Impulses of relatively low frequency can be conducted by the nervous system, but high
frequency signals can be conducted by the gaps or wave-guides. Thus, the channel system is
solo candidate to transmit the high frequency impulses produced by cells.
Theoretical and experimental study have proved, that channels can be wave-guides, which
conduct electromagnetic waves of various ranges [V.Kaznacheev et al., 1985; E.Andreev et al.,
1985; T.Croley, 1986].
The independent and oldest regulatory system of the human and animal body is probably the
system of channels [A.Zhyrmunsky et al., 1979; L.Savina et al., 1983; Zhao Jianguo et al., 1986].
The morphological and functional simplicity of the channels is the reason, why they have
failed to verify them, because it is too primitive from the modern biology point of view
[E.Stiefvater, 1956]. Yet being a basic system, it unifies all other, more complex regulation systems
and provides the organisms interaction with the environment.

1.5.3. Energy or Qi.

It is very difficult to translate the term Qi and many different ones may have been
proposed, none of which approximates the essence of Qi exactly. It can assume different
manifestations and be different things in various situations. One and the same Qi can be named by a
different manner and has various functions.Usually it is impossible to understand the meaning
exactly, without the text where the word Qi is applied.
Sometimes Qi is translated as air, energy, and living force or functional activity is
described by means of Qi. At the same time it is both material and nonmaterial. It can be
associated with either energy or form,
In 1964 an English cybernetic S.Beer proposed an idea by which the complex system can be
managed by the sole managing parameter. He described its properties: the parameter must
function at any elements of the system, and change of a parameter at any place in a system, has to
be accompanied by changing the functional status of the whole system.
We may suppose then that when we speak about living systems, Qi is a solo managing
parameter and thinking it over further, we can suggest that the electrical potential of the cell
membranes can be accepted as a real or material realization of Qi [G.Ovchinnikova, 1985].

By means of Qi one may compare any non-compared signs and phenomenon, for
example, height, weight, heat, colour, time, conditions of health and disease and various
therapeutic methods. One may value and compare the body resistance, its function and kind of
disease and also prescribe necessary treatment. Comparison and value is done, not in the
figures, but in comparative categories: more, much more, less, much less or equal.

By means of the value of Qi one may recognise or define a problem. For example, if there is
a cough or dyspnoea it means that there is a Lung disorder. If the cough is aggravated by inspiration
it means that there is a Deficiency condition of Lung, if cough is aggravated by expiration; it means
that there is an Excess condition of the Lung. It does not matter, what nosologic diagnosis the
patient has or what the results of any modern examination (laboratory, x-ray, etc.) In the case of
Excess one should sedate points of the Lung channel and at the case of Deficiency one should
reinforce points of the Lung channel.

8
Thus, Qi is a sole managing parameter as well as a universal measuring unit, which is
used to describe and compare any phenomena or processes. The authors consider that it is difficult
to find a good modern equivalent word for the term Qi. There are various version of translation but
non of them can be accepted as universal, which could contain all sense of Qi. So, one cant
translate this term without knowing the context in which it was applied.

Application of Qi in every day practice.

Wei Qi (defensive Qi) circulates more superficially and prevents the penetration of any
diseases to the bodys depth. This Qi correlates to the body resistance, immunity and adaptive
capacity.
Ying Qi (nutrient Qi) circulates in Regular Channels mainly, making 50 cycles per day. In
modern terms it can be correlated to the body metabolic activity.
Yuan Qi (hereditary or congenital Qi) is stored in the kidney, and in modern terms can be
described as genetic information.

1.6. Electroconductivity of the channels.

According to the reflex theory, between skin and internal organs there are the interrelations
known as cutaneous-visceral and viscerocutaneous reflexes. The theory of functional systems
describes more complex mechanisms of interaction between various parts of reflex arches
[P.Anokhin, 1985]. Besides the interrelation between organs and tissues of a body is realized by
means of various biologically active substances, cellular elements, products of a metabolism,
electric signals, etc.

In the theory of TCM and modern pathophysiology they allocate cutaneous reflexogenic
zones on the legs, arms, chest, abdomen and a back. These zones become active in case of disease
of internal organs. They can be used in the diagnostic and therapeutic purposes (fig. 8 and 11/d).

Figure 8. Reflexogenic zones on the arms and legs as well as on the trunk.

In accordance with the TCM all mechanisms of interrelations between cells, tissues and
organs are described by the theory of channels and collaterals. The same theory allows to define
the disorders and prescribe therapeutic plan (fig. 9).

Channels and collaterals belong to the independent regulatory system: various components
of this system are differ by the pathways, depth of the way, function, pathology and therapy.

The channels have acupoints which provide estimation of the channel and organ condition as
well as therapeutic action on the sick organ (fig. 10).

1.7. Measuring and visualization of AURA or Wei Qi.

Taking into account TCM theory (chapter 1.5.3), it is possible to assume, that diffuse
conductivity of the skin caused by conducting properties of intercellular intervals of the skin
epithelium, reflects a condition defensive energy or Wei Qi. This kind of conductivity also should
depend on humidity of a skin and, accordingly, activity of the sveating glands (fig. 11/b).

10
In case of development of disease from outside to inside, the so-called syndrome of Excess
of the Tendino-muscular channel or reflexogenic zones in the beginning is formed.
This syndrome is characterized by the basic signs of an acute inflammation, i.e. superficial
pain, worsened by pressure, local high sensitivity of skin, hyperaemia (flushing of the skin), local
high temperature in the affected area, local swelling and dysfunction in an arm or leg (fig 11/a).

A deficiency state of the Tendino muscular channel or skin zone develop once an external
pathogen has penetrated inside the body, or because of the development of internal states.
The location of these damaged zones will be as before, but the clinical manifestations are
those characteristic of chronic inflammation or degenerative symptoms: superficial pain, reduced by
pressure, locally reduced skin sensitivity, paleness of the skin, local low temperature in the affected
area, local reduction in skin turgor, and dysfunction in arm or leg (fig 11/c).

The syndrome of Excess corresponds with hyperfunctional condition of reflexogenic zones

described by G.Zahar'in and G.Head, [G.Zakharin, 1894; G.Head, 1898], and the syndrome of
Deficiency corresponds with hypofunctional condition of reflexogenic zones described by
B.Williamovsky [B.Williamovsky, 1909]. Skin electroconductivity is increased in site of
hyperfunctional zone and is decreased at site of hypofunctional zones.

The mechanism of change of conductivity at increase or decrease of functional activity skin

reflexogenic zones is schematically submitted on the figure (fig. 11).

Resistance of a cellular membrane is great enough (especially in keratose cells) and many
times over exceeds conductivity in the microgaps available between cells. Therefore, it is possible
to assume, that the basic contribution to conductivity of the skin (outside of acupoints) is brought
with conductivity of intercellular gaps. The balanced interaction between structural and liquid
substance of derma provides an optimum level of electric conductivity (fig. 11/b).
At a syndrome of Excess (the inflammation in a phase of alteration and exudation) takes
place a hypostasis, allocation of inflammatory transmitters and amplification of microcirculation
that is accompanied by expansion of intercellular intervals and reduction of skin resistance (fig.
11/a).
At a syndrome of Deficiency processes of an atrophy, replacement of a normal tissue of
derma by connetive tissue components prevail, there is an infringement of microcirculation and
increase of skin resistance (fig. 11/c).

S.Kirlian and V.Kirlian (1961) were the first who realized measuring and visualization of
the AURA or diffuse electroconductivity.

1.8. Measuring and visualization of nutrient Qi or Ying Qi.

It is supposed, that at increase of amount of nutrient energy (Ying Qi) in the Regular channel
there is an increase of its conductivity. Activity of this deep part of the point is reflected on the
conductivity of the point channel, as well as conductivity of the point entrance/exit on the skin
surface (fig. 14).

correlation between channel and point conductivity and Qi amount.

Measuring the local (point) conductivity usually is carried out by contact methods.
Authors measure different group of the points and apply various voltage [Y.Nakatani, 1950; R.Voll,
1960; A.Nechushkin, 1974; M.Hyodo, 1975; C.Ionescu-Tirgoviste et al, 1984]. The main principle
of the methods is shown at the picture 15.

13
Attempts of visualization of the minimal electric resistance point were undertaken from the
middle of 80th years of the twentieth century [Lin Xianzhe et al., 1984; G.Abramyan, etc].

Device AcuImage-01 is a modern variant of the method which provide visualization of

low electric resistance points [R.Avagyan et al., 1997].

For visualization of the points with local decreased resistance it is necessary to use rather
thick dielectric medium (in comparison with the dielectric, used for visualization of diffuse
intercellular conductivity), which considerably increases the total resistance which consists of
resistance of the skin as well as dielectric medium.
Above a low electric resistance points of the skin on the dielectric arises disruption where
the highest intensity of the corona discharge is observed. In the same place on the dielectric the
phenomenon of a luminescence as a bright stain is formed (fig. 16).

1.9. Diagnostic application of AcuImage-01 device.

On the picture 1 there is a picture of AcuImage-01 device and there is a front panel of the
device on the picture 17.

Imaging points with the lowest electrical resistance are held in a

room with controlled lighting.

Figure 17. Front panel of the AcuImage-01 device.

Working terminal 8 with the quill electrodes 7 is provided with a

button 6 to activate the high voltage generator and a ground strap
9 of the operator.

14
At realization of diagnostic session of visualization of the low electric resistance points it is
necessary to make the following actions:

1. Both the patient and the operator must be grounded with the help special electrodes: the
grounding electrode of the patient is inserted in the special jack which is taking place on the front
panel of the device, and the grounding electrode of the operator is taking place on the handle of an
active electrode.

2. Cover the researched area with a thin dielectric medium, for example polythene, a cotton fabric
(it is better than white color) or a paper napkin (fig. 18/a).

3. The MODE switch set to the left position continuous mode.

4. Switch off illumination in a room where investigation will be done. Take an Positive active
electrode (diagostic terminal) to researched area of the patient on distance 100 + 50 mm, press the
button on the terminal and to achieve occurrence of luminous points.

5. Scan a researched site of the patients body, in regular intervals moving diagostic terminal on
identical distance from a researched surface. Acupoints taking place in a condition of Excess will
have the maximal brightness of a luminescence and largest diameter (fig. 16 and 18).

6. After end of research release the red button on diagostic terminal (deenergizing of the high-
voltage discharge) and switch off a power of the device.

Figure 18. Method of the point vizualization (a) and example of vizualization (b).

1.10. The diagnostic criteria used at visualization of points.

After realization of the acupoint visualization session it is necessary to estimate the received
results correctly. For a tentative estimation it is recommended to use the following criteria:
(1) localization of acupoints and their connection with the certain channels and organs,
(2) functional condition: brightness and duration of a luminescence.

1) Localization of the visualized points.

For the doctor who has some experience in acupuncture it is easy enough to define
visualised acupoints. Using the special atlas, one may specify the name of luminous points and their
conformity to any channel or organ (fig. 19).
In connection with that the device visualises any points having lowered resistance for
identification of these points it is necessary to use atlases of channel, extrachannel, new and

15
auricular points as well as the points described by doctors R.Voll, Park Jae Woo (Su Jok) and other
authors.

Figure 19. An example of the point visualization: lymphatic point (by R.Voll).

2) Brightness and duration of a luminescence.

As it was already marked above, diagnostic criterion at visualization of points are brightness
(and the size) a luminous point, and also time of its luminescence. These recommendations are
based on the experimental data showing, that the size of conducting site of the skin in acupoint area
depends on a Qi level: at a phenomenon of Excess the size conducting window is increased, and at
lack of energy (Deficiency) it decreases [A.Podshibiakin, 1960; Ionescu-Tirgoviste, 1984].
When a size of electroconducting stain increases conductivity of the point accordingly
brightness and duration of a luminescence raises simultaneously (fig. 16).

3) The additional criterion, allowing to estimate a functional condition of points (Excess or

Deficiency), is comparison of results of visualization at use of positive and negative electrodes.

Presumably, diagnostic terminal of red color (positive) allows visualization of the points
which are taking place in a condition of Excess, and diagnostic terminal of dark blue color
(negative) allows visualization of the points which are taking place in a condition of Deficiency
(fig. 20). This assumption is based on results of experiments in which it was shown, that in the field
of a acupoint the semi-conductor effect takes place [D.Parmenkov, 1970].

Active

Figure 20. Scheme of the point visualization by means of positive and negative electrodes.

The points which are in Excess condition conduct an electric current (electrons) from
outside to inside, that promotes reduction of their activity and effect of sedation.

The points which are in Deficiency condition conduct an electric current (electrons) from
inside to outside, that promotes increasing their activity and effect of stimulation.

This statement will be coordinated to results of the majority of the authors using
electrotherapy or electropuncture. It is established, that in a place of the negative electrode the
effect of increase of excitability of cells is marked, and in a place of the positive electrode the effect
of sedation of cells is marked [G.Portnov, 1987].

16
Thus, on a condition of points and channels, there is a change of an orientation of the
least electric resistance and the size of conducting site of a skin in the field of an exit of a point
on a surface of a body.
The quick version of an estimation assumes simple revealing the channel along which a lot
of points (Excess) or the least (Deficiency) amount of luminous points are observed.

The revealed points may be used both in diagnostic, and in the therapeutic purposes. Thus
on them it is possible to apply tonic method in case of Deficiency or sedation method in case of
Excess: they may use massage, needles, moxibustion as well as various apparatus methods such as
air-ion, electrotherapy, laser, EHF-therapy, etc.

2. THERAPEUTIC USE OF ACUIMAGE-01 DEVICE

The device AcuImage-01 represents the high-voltage pulse generator with the
microprocessor management, intended for realization of electro puncture and air-ions therapy as
well as for visualization of points with the least electric resistance.

2.1. Effects realized during air-ion and therapy and electropuncture.

In accordance with the modern and ancient theories effects of any therapeutic methods
depend on the following factors:
1) Initial condition of the patient (and his channels and organs);
2) Specificity of the applied acupoints or medicines;
3) The dose of the therapy.

2.1.1. Initial condition of patient body.

A theory of the functional systems (by P.Anokhin) and acupuncture theory of TCM
suggests that initial condition of patient body plays the most important role to provides response of
the body while any treatment method. But this non-specific mechanism can be realized if patients
body has enough reserves or adaptation possibilities. When these reserves have been exhausted
mechanism of initial condition looses its importance. So, general or non-specific treatment can
provide good therapeutic effects while patients suffering from not severe diseases having short
anamnesis.

Analysis of various studies concludes that in any case effects that basically are only
normalizing, accompany any effective treatment. So, if the patient initially has increased
parameters then we wait for a decrease, and if the patient initially has decreased parameters we
hope to achieve an increase. Usually treatment does not change parameters, which were at a relative
norm. The more the initial change, the more improvement after treatment may be observed. If the
patient has a small initial change of some parameters, improvement after treatment may not be
statistically proved (fig. 21).

2.1.2. Specific effects of air-ion therapy and electropuncture.

The second factor, which determines results of treatment is a functional specificity of the
applied acupoints and zones as well as specific effects of exact physical factor (positive and
negative air-ions and electrical current) and how this physical factor influences on exact tissues,
organs or system. These parameters play the main role while patients having lower adaptation
capacity and suffering from severe and long-time diseases are treated.

Effects of air-ion action:

Under action of an electric field of a high voltage there is an ionization of molecules of air
on which neutral gas molecules settle. Among the formed air-ions the greatest chemical activity
molecular ions have 3+, +, 2, NO2 [V.Bogolubov et al., 1999].
Being the charged particles, air-ions move in the air on power lines of an electric field. It
allows to create the directed stream of air-ions. At collision with a surface of a skin and mucous
membranes of respiratory tract air-ions lose the charge and turn to atoms and the molecules having
high reactionary ability. Molecules 3 and N2 are strong oxidizers, and atoms and N - strong
reducers [V.Bogolubov et al., 1999].
Among specific effects trophic improvement is described at use of air-ions of negative
polarity, and bactericidal effect in relation to pathogenic microflora at use of aero-ions of positive
polarity [. Tchijevsky, 1999].

Penetrating in the superficial layers of epidermis, they cause different effects. Chemically active
atoms and molecules cooperate with molecular complexes of biological membranes and
interstitial electrolytes. Various products of electrolysis are formed, biologically active
substances, and also the microenvironment of the free nervous endings of a skin that results in
change of tactile and pain sensitivity changes. Products of negative ions recombination
increase conductivity of nervous conductors of a skin, and positive - lower it [V.Bogolubov et
al., 1999]. Probably, the effect of air-ions acting is realized through high-conductive areas of a
skin, which are acupoints [F.Portnov, 1987].

Inhalation of air-ions activates movement of fibers vibrating of tracheas and bronchial tubes
epithelium and increase speed of sputum evacuation. Chemically active atoms and molecules
cooperate with molecular complexes of biological membranes and induce allocation from cells of
biologically active substances. Formed chemically active atoms and molecules stimulate metabolic
processes in respiratory truct epithelium, cause expansion of arterioule and strengthening blood
supply via in vessels of bronchial tubes and pulmonary alveoli, activate reparation processes in

19
respiratory tract. Products of air-ions recombination achieving a blood-air barrier activate capture of
oxygen by red cells [V.Bogolubov et al., 1999].

Effects of electro-puncture:

Electro-puncture is a therapeutic method which uses constants, pulse or alternating

currents on acupoints. Such currents may cause excitation of nervous conductors taking place here
and polarization of the tissue connected by acupoints with the subsequent change of their functional
properties [V.Bogolubov et al., 1999].
Electro-puncture causes activation mainly opioidergic neurotransmitter system of a
brain by means of which it is carried out central analgesia. The low frequencies current
increases the contents of meth-enkephalin in the brain liquor, and high frequencies current
increases the contents of -endorphin, causing more expressed analgesia accrues. Besides it is
experimentally proved activities effect of electropuncture on metabolism of nervous, muscular
and epithelium tissue [V.Bogolubov et al., 1999].

For air-ions as well as for an electric current that action of negative polarity renders
stimulation effect is general, and action of positive polarity gives sedation effect [F.Portnov,
1987; V.Bogolubov et al., 1999].
Besides polarity of an electric current and air-ions it is possible to increase stimulation and
sedation effect using an amplitude modulation
2.1.3. Specific effects depending on the applied acupoints and zones.
Both in orthodox western medicine, and in TCM, it is accepted that any internal pathological
process will be accompanied by changes at the skin surface.
The practitioner needs to find the relevant zones, access their condition, and select an
appropriate treatment method before starting to work (fig. 23).
Depending on activity (acuteness) of pathological process these reflexogenic skin zones
can be in active or passive condition.
Active reflexogenic zones were described by Zakharin and Head [G.Zakharin, 1894;
G.Head, 1898]. They are characterized by superficial pain, local increasing skin temperature
and sensitivity, hyperemia and swelling. Passive reflexogenic zones were described by
Williamovsky [B.Williamovsky, 1909]. These zones are characterized by superficial pain, local
decreasing skin temperature and sensitivity, paleness, etc.
Active reflexogenic zones are required to be sedated, and passive reflexogenic zones are
required to be stiumated. In both cases it is necessary to achieve normalization of skin sensitivity,
temperature and electroconductivity.

d) Indifferent or healthy regions of skin.

20
Reflexogenic zones of the skin are described as Tendino-Mucular channels, skin regions
(projections of internal organ on the skin) and segmental innervations skin zones. All mechanisms
underlying interaction between skin and internal organs and tissues are described by the theory of
Channels and Collaterals (fig. 8).
There are 12 regular channels and 12 main organs. Every channels has special acupoints
which can be applied for diagnostic and therapeutic purpose. These main points are as followings:
tonic, sedation, harmonization, alarm and back-shu points (chapter 5.3).
The theory of TCM provides definition of location and type of the problem and prescribing
therapeutic plan.

Thus, one needs to define location of the treatment 1 (acupoints or reflexogenic zone)
and method of therapy (stimulation or sedation).

2.1.4. Non-specific effects produced by the dose of air-ions and electrical current.

The last non-specific factor which provides a therapeutic effects is a dose. In case of air-
ions therapy and electro-puncture the dose depends on the current and duration of treatment.
Those patients who have an acute strong manifested disease require high power action (high
current) and duration treatment. Patients who have chronic and long-time diseases and weak clinical
manifestations require low power of action (low current) and short-time duration of treatment
[A.Ukhtomsky, 1966; N.Vvedensky, 1952].

Electrical Current:
Electrical current is regulated by the distance between electrode and skin surface. The more
distance the less current and visa verse.

The highest current which can be passed via patients body never exceeds 99 mkAAn
average therapeutic current via the whole patients body is about 30 40 mkA, but via points is less
then 5 - 10 mkA.

Duration of therapy:
It is possible to define stimulation (reinforcing), harmonizing and sedation action:
- Stimulation usually they apply negative electrode during 2-3 minutes;
- Harmonizing usually they apply negative electrode during 3-5 minutes;
- Sedation usually they apply positive electrode during 3-4 minutes.

It is recommended to individualize the maximal duration of influence on sensory reactions

which should not become discomfortable (pain, heaviness, etc.).

2.2. Air-ion therapy and electro-puncture.

2.2.1. Air-ion therapy and electro-puncture.

At use of AcuImage-01 device it is realized general and local air-ion therapy. Penetration of
air-ions occurs as through acupoints due to local conductivity, and through environmental sites of
the skin for the account of diffuse intercellular conductivity (fig. 24).

1
The stream of ionized air directed on different reflexogenic zones, may cause various response of an organism, and these reactions carry, as
a rule, segmentary character [F.Portnov, 1987]. Specificity of localization of action is described during air-ions therapy: for example, the
stream of air-ions directed on the patient's face mainly produces parasympathetic effects, but action on the back of the neck area renders
mainly raise excitability of a sympathetic part of autonomic nervous system [V.Bogolubov et al, 1999].

21
(b)
(b)
(a)

Figure 24. Local (a) and diffuse (b) penetration of air-ions in the skin.

For increase of specificity of acupoint effect it is necessary to block diffuse conductivity of the skin
surounding the point for what it is possible to use aperture, made of a thick dielectric material. The
unique variant of treatment which refers to as air-ion puncture in this case is realized (fig. 25).

Electrode Apertura

Figure 25. Local air-ion action via the site of acupoint.

Depending on above what area of a body there is an active electrode of AcuImage-01

device, the doctor may realize the effects connected to penetration of air-ions in respiratory tract
and alveoluses, through active points of a nose and nasal cavities, an auricle, a palm, stops, and also
through any others acupoints and zones of the skin (fig. 26).

As a rule, during session the patient has various sensory reactions, namely, sensation of a
weak breeze or creeping movement. These reactions may be in the area of acting or along legs and
hands. Rather seldom sensations are distributed along a trunk.
Simultaneously with sensations of movement some patients mark occurrence of sensation of
ease in a body or in finiteness, heat, a relaxation, general comfort, etc.

2.2.2. Electro-puncture and electro-therapy.

For realization of electro-therapy and electro-puncture the surface of the skin should be
covered by dielectric medium. In the field of transition of dielectric-air the corona discharge is
transformed in silent spark discharge, thus the electric current of the applied polarity becomes the
basic therapeutic factor (fig. 27).

Extensiveness of therapeutic effect is determined by dielectric thickness and level of the

voltage. The thicker dielectric and the less voltage used, the less amount of disruptions are arisen on
dielectric, and, hence, electro-puncture acting becomes local. At use thin dielectric and higher
voltage there arise disruptions in many sites of dielectric, and acting becomes more general.

As a rule, during therapeutic session patients feel faint pricking in the place of
electropuncture acting. The intensity of electric current sensation is more, when dielectric is thicker
and applied voltage is higher.

simultaneously (fig. 28).

Figure 28. Session of electro-puncture (a) and low resistance point visualization (b).

2.2.3. Electro-puncture and air-ion therapy.

Regime of the therapeutic session depends on both factors - disease which patient has and
applied method and can be as following:

1) General treatment and application of standard reflexogenic zones and acupoints.

2) Local treatment in case of local disease of the skin or muscles: consequences of a trauma,
trophic ulcers, bedsores, scars, burns etc.

3) Definition of syndrome diagnosis of TCM (definition of excess or deficiency in the

channel and organ), choice of the point and reflexogenic zones and application of sedation,
harmonization or stimulation method.

4) Definition of modern western diagnosis and application of recommended acupoints.

5) Definition of the diagnosis and application of reflexogenic zones from the atlas.

24
For treatment of acute diseases one should apply sedation method and positive electrical
current or air-ions.
For treatment of chronic diseases one should apply stimulation method and negative
electrical current or air-ions.
For general treatment one should apply harmonization method and negative electrical
current or air-ions.

Method: Electrodes Modulation Duration

Sedation Positive 0 - 60 120 Hz 3 4 min.
Harmonization Negative 0 - 30 60 Hz 2 3 min.
Stimulation Negative 0- 20 30 Hz 1 2 min.

At a choice of therapeutic methods between electro-puncture and air-ions therapy it is

possible to recommend the following:

- The general treatment on standard reflexogenic zones and acupoints will be carried out with
use air-ions therapy mainly;

- Local treatment, including, at presence wound surfaces will be carried out with use air-ions
therapy mainly;

- Treatment on the basis of the modern western diagnosis on standard reflexogenic zones
from the atlas will be carried out with use of both air-ions therapy and electro-puncture;

- Treatment on the basis of the modern western diagnosis on recommended acupoints will be
carried out with use of electro-puncture;

- Treatment on the basis of syndrome diagnosis of TCM in case of Deficiency stimulation

acting on the acupoints and zones should be carried out with use of air-ions therapy mainly;

- Treatment on the basis of syndrome diagnosis of TCM in case of Excess sedation acting on
the acupoints and zones should be carried out with use of air-ions therapy and electro-puncture.

Both an air-ion therapy and electro-puncture can be combined with the medicinal and
non-medicinal therapeutic methods.
The best effect can be achieved when air-ion therapy or electro-puncture is applied
together with EHF-puncture, acupuncture, moxibustion as well as with other therapeutic
methods based on the theory of TCM.

2.3. Therapeutic application of AcuImage-01 device.

.

Figure 29. Terminal and Front panel of AcuImage-01 device.

25
Both the patient and the operator must be grounded with the help of special electrodes: the
grounding electrode for the patient is inserted in the special jack which is taking place on the front
panel of the device, and the grounding electrode for the operator is taking place on the handle of an
active electrode.
For electro-puncture mode affected skin area must be covered by dielectric (fig. 30/a).
For air-ion therapy dielectric is not necessary.
For air-ion puncture special dielectric aperture is applied (fig. 25).

Figure 30. Electro-puncture (a) and air-ion therapy (b).

After preparation of the device for work (according to the instruction) the operator should take an
active electrode (diagnostic terminal) and to switch on the device.

The order of operation of electro:

1. To cover the patient's skin by a dielectric.
2. Switch 4 "MODE" to select the desired frequency (position right) modulation or continuous
operation (to the left).
3. From a distance of 5 10 cm guide needle electrodes 7 of the terminal to the impact zone and
press the 6 button. In the transition region from the skin - dielectric air arises a quiet spark
discharge . The effect of electro implemented simultaneously with the phenomenon of visualization
of the points of least electrical resistance .The thicker the used dielectric, the stronger the effects of
electroacupuncture.
During the procedure, patients feel a tingling sensation at the point of impact.

The order of operation Aero ionic therapy:

1. The impact is performed on the exposed areas of the body.
2. Switch 4 "MODE" to select the desired frequency (position right) modulation or continuous
operation (to the left).
3. From a distance of 5 10 cm guide needle electrodes 7 of the terminal to the impact zone

26
and press 8. Evenly to move the terminal above the impact zone.
When using the positive electrode is implemented the effect of "calming" or "braking".
It is recommended to use at a syndrome of "Completeness" - inflammation in the phase of alteration
and exudation, edema and secretion of inflammatory mediators.
Local treatment of local pathologies of the skin and muscles: burns, trauma, ulcers, etc. During the
procedure, the patient feels a slight cool air movement.
When using a negative electrode is implemented the effect of toning and harmonizing.

With the therapeutic purpose uniform moving active terminal above an affected site of
a skin of the patient should be carried out.

At use of a mode of electro-puncture, at the patient arise sensation weak picking in the
points with the low electric resistance (the highest brightness of a luminescence in a mode of
visualization).
Individual duration of therapy is defined by duration of a luminescence of the brightest
points, thus procedure is necessary for carrying out in a dark room.

At use of a mode of air-ion therapy the patient usually has a sensation of the breeze, blowing in
a skin surface.

In a mode of air-ion therapy the correct direction of movement of an electrode is desirable to

choose therapies. As from TCM it is known, that energy in the channel circulates in the certain
direction, therefore during medical session it is necessary to find out from the patient what from the
chosen directions of movement causes the most comfortable sensations. This direction is usual
corresponds to required effect: for stimulation it is necessary to move an electrode on a course of a
direction of movement of energy, and for sedation it is necessary to move an electrode on a course
of against a course.
If the patient does not mark preference to this or that direction of movement of an electrode
is reflects that fact, that he has a problem of the Tendino-muscular channel or disease of the
appropriate body.
General duration of procedure depends on the area of a processable site of a body of the
patient and usually does not exceed 10-15 minutes.

Occurrence of any negative sensations demands to reduce intensity of an electric field to

increase distance between a body of the patient and the medical terminal, to change a direction of
movement of the medical terminal or to change polarity of the medical terminal. If all these actions
do not eliminate available discomfort it is necessary to stop procedure.

Switch off the device after end of medical session.

3. STANDARD TREATMENT BY ACUIMAGE-01 DEVICE

Use standard reflexogenic zones and acupoints is carried out with the prophylaxis and
therapeutic purpose. In both cases there is a strengthening general health resistance due to
activization of the body adaptable opportunities. The preference is given to air-ions therapy on
the general (standard) points and reflexogenic zones. They apply reinforcing, harmonizing or
sedation modes.

27
Mode: Electrode Modulation Duration
Reinforcing Negative 20 Hz 2 3 min.
Harmoniza Negative 30 - 40 Hz 4 5 min.
tion
Sedation Positive 40 -120 Hz 4 5 min.

St36 (Zu San Li): The locate the point one should do the following steps: measure the
distance between the lower border of the patella (kneecap) and the tip of the lateral malleolus (ankle
bone on the outside of the leg). Divide this by 15 to get 1 cun, and multiply by 3 to get 3 cun. Make
a horizontal mark on the skin this far below the lower edge of the patella (kneecap).
At the level of this mark about 1 cun to the outside edge, in the middle of the tibialis
anterior (muscle which runs down the shin). If you feel gently, you will observe a light fossa
(hollow or depression) where the muscle feels a little looser. This area corresponds to the skin
projection of St 36. Mark it with a pen. (It is often sensitive to pressure).

LI 4 (He Gu) - The location of this point is described in TCM as on the dorsum (back) of
the hand, between the 1st and 2nd metacarpal bones, approximately in the middle of the 2nd
metacarpal bone of the radial side (fig. 32/c).
If you close your thumb to your hand, it is against the bone approximately opposite the 2nd
thumb joint down from the tip. In most people, the spot is tender when pressed. Mark it with a pen.

28
To reduce the size of exposure area apply special aperture, which can be made from
dielectric medium (fig. 25 and 32/b).
3.2. Air-ions therapy and electropuncture on the points and zones of the auricle.
The auricle is considered as one of the most active Microsystems (fig. 33). It is believed
that embryo of a human being is projected on the auricle in the inverted position. Thus, the
head is projected on the lobule of the auricle, the vertebral column is projected along the
antihelix, the internal organs are in the cup of the auricle, etc (fig 33).
Through the palpation of auricular points it is possible to reveal painful and insensitive
points.

One may apply both air-ions therapy or electro-puncture.
It is recommended to apply circular motion clockwise above left auricular during 3-5
minutes, then to apply circular motion counter clockwise above rught auricular during another 3-5
minutes.

3.3. Air-ions therapy and electropuncture on the palm of the hand.

Skin of the palms also is an active zone where projections of whole body can be found and
the organs can be treated there, as they are in systems of reflexology.
One may apply both air-ions therapy or electro-puncture. Electrode movement should be
clockwise on the right palm and anti-clockwise on the left (fig. 34).

3.4. Air-ions therapy on the reflexogenic zones of the sole.

Sole also is an active zone where projections of whole body can be found. Any diseases
are reflected on the sole surface and so, the problems of the internal organs can be treated here
(fig. 35).
Because of the fact the skin conductivity of the sole is very low usually it is necessary to
apply high level of energy (continuous mode, the frequency is 0 Hz). One may apply both air-
ions therapy or electro-puncture. It recommended to apply circular or longitudinal motion (fig.
34).
In case of circular motion it is necessary to move electrode alternatevely clockwise and
counter clockwise during 5-7 minutes on the one side then on another side (fig. 35/a).

30
In case of longitudinal motion it is necessary to move electrode alternatevely from the hill to
the toes and back during 5-7 minutes on the one side then on another side (fig. 35/b).

(a) (b

3.5. Air-ions therapy on the reflexogenic zones of the face.`
In accordance with the theory of TCM any organs can be projected on the face too. There
are several versions of this accordance (fig. 36).
It is preferable to apply air-ions therapy by the negative electrode. One recommends to
alternate clockwise and counter clockwise circular motion during 3-5 minutes.

3.6. Air-ions therapy and electropuncture on the Alarm points.
On the anterior surface of the chest and abdomen there are so-called Alarm points. They
connected with the internal organs. In case of acute diseases these points become painful and
increase in size (fig 37).

If palpation of the Alarm points reveals painfulness and tender it means that there is an
Excess at the point and correlated organ. One should sedate this point by applying air-ions therapy
or electropuncture with positive electrode. It recommends to alternate clockwise and counter
clockwise circular motion during 3-5 minutes (fig. 37).

3.7. Air-ions therapy and electropuncture on the Back Shu points.

On the back surface of the trunk, along the Channel of Bladder, there are so called Back-
Shu points corresponding to internal organs (fig. 38).
Chronic disease makes them become sensitive. The change in the functional state of these
points is accompanied by a local muscle strain. The changed muscle tone is, in turn, reflected in the
function of some segment of the vertebral column. A creation of local osteochondrosis with
atrophic and vascular disorders may take place.

All Back-Shu points belong to the internal branch of the Bladder Channel (B1). Every

point is positioned at the level of the lower border of the spinal process. Besides classic the

BackShu points there are additional points, which have similar functions. They belong to the

32
external branch of the Bladder Channel (B2) and are positioned at the same level as the classic

BackShu points. Both types of points correlate to the segment nerve and internal organ.

Usually these Back-Shu points, and segments of a skin connected with them, are used for
a reinforcing and warming action on the internal organs.

To achieve the general harmonizing effect the medical terminal of negative polarity is used
and alternation of movement from the top downward and from below upwards is carried out (fig.
38/a).
At realization of the general stimulation (reinforcing) effect - the direction of movement of
the medical terminal of negative polarity should be from the top downward, i.e. on a course of Qi
movement in the Bladder channel (fig. 38/c).
At realization of the general sedation effect - the direction of movement of the medical
terminal of positive polarity should be from below upwards, i.e. against a course of Qi movement in
the Bladder channel (fig. 38/b).

3.8. Practical recommendations on standard air-ions therapy and electropuncture.
In any case of standard therapy we suggest beginning from the point St36 (Zu San Li) and the
doctor should apply another zones and points.
We recommend the following sequence of the various methods of air-ions therapy and
electropuncture:

Acute Disease Chronic Disease

the Chest & Abdomen Reflexogenic zones

Microsystems Microsystems

3.9. The general remarks and recommendations:

Irrespective of character of a pathology, it is recommended to start with a tonic or
harmonizing mode. At occurrence of discomfortable sensations (a pain, heaviness, fullness) - it is
necessary to change polarity of an electrode and / or a direction of movement of the medical
terminal. If these sensations are kept, it is recommended to stop medical session.

4. LOCAL TREATMENT BY ACUIMAGE - 01 DEVICE

4.1. General remarks on local treatment.

Local treatment is used when there is a local problem of skin, subcutaneous fat tissue or
muscles, for example, local consequences of a trauma, atrophic ulcers, bedsores, skin itching,
kelloid, a burn, etc.

The preference is given to local air-ion therapy directly in the field of disease, surrounding
the damaged area in the field of healthy skin and along the channels which pathways crosse a
problem area.

The pathology of Tendino-Muscular channels is accompanied by symptoms of the local

disease, for example, pain, changed skin sensitivity, redness or paleness, increased or decreased
skin temperature, edema, etc. During treatment these local symptoms are releasing or disappearing.
After effective treatment skin has no scars or other consequences of the disease.

The pathology of Luo-channels (collateral) can have vessels disorders, changing the muscle
tone, kelloind scar, bald spots and other symptoms and syndromes, which are accompanied by
deeper atrophic disorders then Tendino-Muscular channels have.

4.2. Local treatment of Tendino-Muscular channel disorders.

Diseases of Tendino-Muscular channels can be acute or chronic and symptoms of

Excess and Deficiency can take place.
They recommend local air-ion treatment directly above and surrounding the problem
skin area.
One my apply circular motion clockwise and counter clockwise alternatively.
If a patient has sensory reactions during treatment and they are differ depending on the
movement direction doctor should choose direction which is accompanied comfortable
feelings.

I) Excess stage of Tendino-Muscular channel disease: if external factor (physical factor,

trauma, bites of animals or stings of insects, etc) affects the skin surface Excess syndrome is
formed. The clinical signs of an excess syndrome are the classical signs of acute
inflammatory conditions:

35
- Superficial pain, aggravated by pressure,
- Local high sensitivity of skin,
- Hyperaemia (flushing of the skin),
- Local high temperature in the affected area,
- Local swelling and dysfunction in an arm or leg (fig. 39).

Recommended parameters of AcuImage-01 device in case of Excess of Tendino-muscular

channel:

Electrode positive;
Modulation 20 - 65 (or 80) Hz;
Time 4 - 5 min.

(a) (b)

Figure 39. Excess of Tendino-Muscular channel.

a) Excess of Tendino-Muscular channel.
b) Changing in the skin while Excess of Tendino-Muscular channel.

During treatment a doctor should choose direction which is accompanied decreasing pain,
redness and edema, normalizing skin sensitivity and improvement of the extremity function.

Sometimes, in the beginning of treatment session patient can have aggravation of the initially
presented symptoms (increased pain, heaviness in the treated area, etc.). This phenomenon is
caused by the initial reinforcing effect of air-ions therapy. As therapy is continuing and
realization sedation effect uncomfortable sensory reactions are transformed into the comfortable
(lightness, creeping, waves, etc.).

II) Deficiency stage of Tendino-Muscular channel disease: if external factor (physical factor,
trauma, bites of animals or stings of insects, etc) affects the skin surface and without necessary
treatment penetrates into the deeper tissue Deficiency syndrome is forming. It has the
following symptoms.

36
- Superficial pain, reduced by pressure,
- Locally reduced skin sensitivity,
- Paleness of the skin,
- Local low temperature in the affected area,
- Local reduction in skin turgor, and dysfunction in arm or leg (fig. 40).
Recommended parameters of AcuImage-01 device in case of Deficiency of Tendino-muscular

channel:

Electrode negative;
Modulation 20 (or 0) Hz;
Time 2 - 3 min.

b) Changing in the skin while Deficiency of Tendino-Muscular channel.

During treatment a doctor should choose direction which is accompanied decreasing pain,

paleness, normalizing skin sensitivity and improvement of the extremity function.

III) Intermediate stage: if external factor (physical factor, trauma, bites of animals or
stings of insects, etc) affects the skin surface and without necessary treatment partly penetrates
into the deeper tissue Intermediate syndrome is forming. It has the symptoms of Excess and
Deficiency simultaneously:

Recommended parameters of AcuImage-01 device in case of Intermediate stage of Tendino-

muscular channel disease:

Electrode negative;
Modulation 20 Hz;
Time 4 - 5 min.

37
During treatment a doctor should choose direction which is accompanied decreasing pain,

normalizing skin color and sensitivity and improvement of the extremity function.

4.3. Treatment of the Luo-channel (collateral) disorders.

When there is a disease of the Luo-channels (collateral) hypertrophy or atrophy
symptoms of skin, muscles and joints appear, besides vessels problem can take place (fig. 41-
42).
Luo-channels (collateral) diseases can have symptoms of Excess or Deficiency, which
can be caused by external or internal factors.
They recommend local air-ion treatment directly above and surrounding the problem
skin area and also along the channels crossing the sick area.
For definition of a direction of the movement required for treatment, it is necessary to
estimate the sensations arising at movement from above - downwards and from below -
upwards, from the left to the right and from the right to the left. That direction at which
expressiveness of the symptoms decreases or comfortable sensations appear is used.

I) Syndrome of Excess is characterized by the following symptoms:

Pain, aggravated by the movement, which makes a channel to be shorter,
Hyperplastic and proliferative process in the skin (kelloid scar, hyperkerotosis, nevus),
Block of the joints (the problem to unbend the joint),
Vessels disorders on the extremities.

In case of Excess of the Luo-channels (collateral) one needs to sedate electrode should be
moved against Qi movement in the channel. Additionally it is recommended to sedate a Luo-point
of the channel crossing the problem area (fig. 41/b).

II) Syndrome of Deficiency is characterized by the following symptoms:

38
Pain, aggravated by the movement, which makes a channel to be longer,
Atrophic disorders:

Examples of atrophic disturbances are given below:

1) The Skin atrophic disorders can include the following symptoms: pruritus of the skin at a
certain region, neurodermatitis, eczema, glabrous or paper skin, bald spots, chronic atrophic ulcer,
bed-sores and so on. (Hyperplasia of the skin, including kelloid cicatrix, belongs to the syndrome of
Excess at the Collateral, crossing the affected region);

2) The Muscular atrophic disorders include weakness or paresis and paralysis with
muscular atrophy, muscular torticollis, etc.;

3) The atrophic disorders of Joints include weakness of the joint, flaccid joint, habitual
dislocation, crackle and crunch at the joint, vertebral body slipping, etc.;

(a) Atrophic ulcer (b)

a) Deficiency of the Luo-channels (collateral) is accompanied by atrophic ulcer.
b) Posttraumatic slow healing wound (or ulcer) along the Large Intestine channel.

In case of Deficiency of the Luo-channels (collateral) one needs to stimulate (reinforce)

electrode should be moved on a course of Qi movement in the channel. Additionally it is
recommended to stimulate a Luo-point of the channel crossing the problem area (fig. 42/b).

In case of purulent complications in the wound surface it is recommended to carry out

processing by a positive electrode, realizing bactericidal effect of positive aero-ions. In the
subsequent, for activization of processes of a reparation the negative electrode is used.

Thus, on the depth of the processes involved in development of disease (Tendino-Muscular

channels or Luo-channels), it is required to carry out treatment directly in the field of defeat or to
combine local treatment with acting on the channels which are taking place through a zone of
defeat.

5. TREATMENT ON THE BASE OF SYNDROME DIAGNOSIS

5.1. General remarks about syndrome approach of TCM.

In accordance with the TCM approach any conditions of the human body can be
described by the Qi or Energy.

Probably if we analize this term from the modern western medicine point of view we
could consider Qi to be a total value of the universal source of energy adenosin-trihosphate
molecule (ATP). These high-energy moleculars are synthesized in mitokhondria by means of
pyruvate and fatty acids oxidation. The process of ATP breaking up is realized by enzyme
ATPase. It can be imagine as [ATP + ATPase = E + ADP], where E is a released energy
which can be applied for various functions, for example for active ion transport via cell
memrane (K+, Na+ or Ca++).

Because of the fact that process of energy production and accumulation is universal and
does not depend on the cell specification, TCM describes it by means of one and the same
parameter - Qi.
In TCM they differentiate pathology when there is relative Excess of the Qi and
pathology when there is relative Deficiency of the Qi. The universal therapeutic principle is in
case of Excess one should sedate, but in case of Deficiency one should reinforce.
Depending on the depth of the problem they apply different diagnostic methods. In any
case of Excess, if something is added it results in aggravation of the symptoms and if
something is removed it results in releasing the symptoms. In any case of Deficiency, if
something is added it results in releasing the symptoms and if something is removed it results
in aggravation of the symptoms.

Diseases of the skin and subcutaneous fat tissue:

In case of local Excess (excess of Tendino-muscular channel) pressure on the damaged
area is accompanied by aggravation of the pain (fig. 43/). In case of local Deficiency
(deficiency of Tendino-muscular channel) pressure on the damaged area is accompanied by
release of the pain (fig. 43/).

Diseases of the muscules, faciis and tendons:

In case of relatively deeper and longer Excess of Qi (excess of the Luo-channel) any
movement, which makes the channel length longer is accompanied by releasing the pain, but
any movement, which makes the channel length shorter is accompanied by aggravation of the
pain (fig. 41, 43/b).
In case of relatively deeper and longer Deficiency of Qi (deficiency of the Luo-channel)
any movement, which makes the channel length longer is accompanied by aggravation of the
pain, but any movement, which makes the channel length shorter is accompanied by releasing
the pain (fig. 41, 43/b).

40
Diseases of the organs (cellular pathology and dysfunction of the organs):
In case of Excess in the Lung (organ), the cough is aggravated by breathing in, and
released by breathing out. In case of Deficiency in the Lung (organ), the cough is aggravated
by breathing out, and released by breathing in (fig. 43/c).

5.3. Main points and reflex zones, applied in Acupuncture

5.3.1. Any Regular Channel has 6 (5) Shu points:

Jing1YingShuYuanJing2He (Jing1 and Jing2 points have the same Chinese

pronunciation, but different characters).

Jing Points are close to the nail corner, but He points are at the region of knee or
elbow: other points are between Jing1 and He points (fig. 44).

42
Besides Shu points there are Luo, Xi, Front-Mu, Back-Shu, as well as extraordinary,
new, painful and other points.

Nomenclature of the acupoints and rules for their application depend on the type of
disease and damaged Qi.

5.3.2. Acupoints applied to treat acute diseases caused by exogenous factors.

Exogenous factors while progressive from outside to inside is blocked at the certain
points and zones, where it must be dispersed (fig. 44).

Ashi or painful points or zones, which belong to Tendino-Muscle channels: these

points are should be dispersed in case of Excess and reinforced in case of Deficiency.

Jing (Well) from this point Tendino-Muscle channel begins its pathway: it is
applied with bleeding in case of unilateral disease (Divergent channel disorders).

Ying (Spring) point is applied to warm Yin Channels and to cool Yang Channels and
to promote Wei Qi circulation.

Shu (Stream) point is applied to disperse exogenous factors from the Yin Channels
and organs.

Luo (Connecting) point is dispersed in case of the Luo-Channel Excess, caused by

exogenous factors.

Yuan (Primary) point is dispersed in case of the Luo-Channel Deficiency, caused by

exogenous factors (at the Yin Channels Yuan point coincides with Shu point).

Xi (Cleft) point is dispersed in case of the pain, propagated along the channel.

43
Jing (River) point is dispersed eliminating exogenous factor from bones and muscles.

He (Sea) point is applied to disperse exogenous factors from the Yang Channels and
organs.

Front-Mu (Alarm) point is applied to disperse exogenous factors from the Zang and
Fu organs (fig. 47).

The principle rule of the treatment:

In case of acute disease, caused by exogenous factors, this exogenous factor must be dispersed
at the points of its block; then one should reinforce the channel, which points have been
dispersed.

5.3.3. Acupoints applied for treatment of chronic and specific diseases caused by
endogenous factors.

Endogenous factors cause general or local Excess or Deficiency at the certain

Channels or Qi imbalance between pairs of channels: YangYin, TopBottom and Left
Right as well as imbalance between 5 elements.

Every Shu points correlates to one of the 5 elements: there is a difference between
Yang and Yin channels (fig. 4546).

Tonification point is a mother point for the element-point (son) of the channels. For
example, Stomach channel (Earth element) has a tonification point St41, which belongs to
the Fire element.

Sedation point is a son point for the element-point (mother) of the channels. For
example, Stomach channel (Earth element) has a sedation point St45, which belongs to the
Metal element.

Yuan (Primary) at this point Luo-transversal channel finishes its pathway

beginning from the Luo point (at the Yin Channels Yuan point coincides with Shu point):
in case of imbalance between Yang-Yin pair of channels Yuan point is reinforced at the
channel with Deficiency condition.

Luo (Connecting) at this point Luo-transversal channel begins and goes to the
Yuan point of the channel, which belongs to the same Yang-Yin pair: in case of imbalance
between Yang-Yin pair Luo point is sedated at the channel with Excess condition.

Xi (Cleft) point is reinforced or sedated in case of the pain, propagated along the
channel.

5.3.4. Alarm and Back-Shu points.

On the anterior surface of the chest and abdomen there are so-called Alarm points. They
connected with the internal organs (fig. 47/a).
In case of Excess syndrome of the organ these points become painful and increase in size.
So, they can be applied to disperse Excess, including one caused exogenous factors (fig. 47/b).

45
In case of Deficiency syndrome of the organ these points applied to reinforce Yin Qi
or structure of the organ.

On the back surface of the body, along the Bladder Channel there are so-called Back-Shu
points, which are connected with certain vertebra, segmental skin nerve zone and internal organ.
These points become sensitive in case of chronic disease (fig. 47/b).
Back-Shu points and segmental reflexogenic zones are applied for reinforcing and
warming the correlated organ.

Recommended modes of the device may be changed by the doctors who have enough
clinical experience.

6. TREATMENT OF DIFFERENT DISEASES

(on the base of modern western diagnosis)

6.1. Choice of acupoints on the base of modern western diagnosis.

There are many difference between modern western and traditional oriental medical
systems. Modern classic (or western) diagnostic methods and criteria provide definition of the
nosologic diagnosis and support prescription of modern medications, as well as physiotherapy or
surgical treatments.

46
The syndrome diagnosis of traditional Oriental medicine provides a choice of acupoints for
acupuncture, moxibustion or their modern equivalents (EHF-therapy, electro-therapy etc.), as well
as a selection of special herbs and diet based on traditional Oriental medicine principles

The modern western diagnosis approach to a choice of acupoints or reflexogenic zones does
not correspond to the principles of TCM. Nevertheless, long-term experience of treatment of
various diseases allows some authors to offer the most effective compounding for treatment of
certain diseases.

Sometimes one combines oriental and modern approach, i.e. the acupoints are recommended
for concrete diseases or the syndrome, but at the same time another acupoints are added in
accordance with the basic and accompanying symptoms of current of disease, .

There are some examples of the treatment of the most frequently meeting for diseases and
syndromes:

Hypertension:

I) the main acupoint for current disease:

Pc6 (Neiguan);
II) additional acupoints in accordance with the basic and accompanying symptoms:
6 (Neiguan), 7 (Daling), 7 (Shenmen), S6 (Sanyinjiao), L10 (Yuji), L5 (Chize), 1
(Yongquan), 2 (Rangu), Du20 (Baihui), etc.

Influence:

I) the main acupoint for current disease:

L7 (Lieque);
II) additional acupoints in accordance with the basic and accompanying symptoms:
L7 (Lieque), L11 (Shaoshang), 11 (Dazhu), 12 (Fengmen), 13 (Feishu).

Gastritis:

I) the main acupoint for current disease:

Sp4 (Gongsun) and Ren12 (Zhongwan);
II) additional acupoints in accordance with the basic and accompanying symptoms:
Sp4 (Gongsun), Ren12 (Zhongwan), St21 (Liangmen), Ren13 (Shanwan), Ren8 (Shenque),
20 (Pishu), 21 (Weishu), St45 (Lidui), Ren15 (Jiuwei), St44 (Neiting), St36 (Zusanli).

Peptic Ulcer:

I) the main acupoint for current disease:

Sp4 (Gongsun);
II) additional acupoints in accordance with the basic and accompanying symptoms:
Sp4 (Gongsun), Ren13 (Shanwan), Ren15 (Jiuwei), St22 (Guanmen), St23 (Taiyi), St45
(Lidui), Du20 (Baihui) [V.Vogralik et al., 1978].

6.2. Choice of reflexogenic zones on the base of modern western diagnosis.

47
According to the reflex theory, between skin and internal organs there are interrelations
known as skin-visceral and viscero-cutaneous reflexes (fig. 9).
Besides the interrelation between organs and tissues is realized by means of various
biologically active substances, cellular elements, products of a metabolism, electric signals etc.

Practitioners lacking the knowledge and experience to apply TCM assessment methods and
chosen specific skin zones and acupoints can instead use the Atlas to make a standardised form of
treatment based on the concepts of orthodox medicine. The Atlas indicates a selection of reflex
zones to treat on the front and the back, which are applied for the treatment of acute or chronic
conditions.

There are skin reflexogenic zones on extremities which, basically, coincide with Tendino-
muscular channels and the skin regions described in TCM. These zones become active at various
diseases and can be used in the diagnostic and medical purposes.
On the anterior surface of the chest and abdomen there are so-called Alarm points. They
are connected with the internal organs (fig. 47/a). In case of Excess syndrome of the organ these
points become painful, increase in size or even can be transformed into wide zones of skin, which
are functionally connected to the diseased internal organs (fig. 47/b). So, they can be treated to
disperse Excess (caused by External energy), which takes place in case of any acute disease. In
case of Deficiency syndrome of the organ these points are treated to reinforce Yin Qi or
structure of the organ.

On the back surface of the body, along the Bladder Channel there are so-called Back-Shu
points, which are connected with certain vertebra, segmental skin nerve zone and internal organ.
These points become sensitive in case of chronic disease (fig. 47/c). Back-Shu points and
segmental reflexogenic zones are treated for reinforcing and warming the correlated organ.

All these reflexogenic zones can be effective for therapy, in cases when specific
pathological signs are diagnosed: Massage the skin and observe any change in the skins color:
redness of the skin reflects Excess, but paleness of the skin reflects Deficiency. Take a saucer (30-
40 mm in diameter) and move it on the skin: if the plate sticks to the skin of the reflexogenic zones
this indicates an Excess condition. Take a needle and test sensitivity of the skin: high sensitivity of
the skin reflects Excess, but lower sensitivity of the skin reflects Deficiency. Apply an Infrared
imaging system to reveal hot and cold spots.

Any zones with a high sensitivity, hyperthermia and redness are in an Excess condition and
they should be sedated, but zones with low sensitivity, hypothermia and paleness have a Deficiency
condition, and should be reinforced.
An experienced doctor may find reflexogenic zones, and determine their condition, by
using only his hand. Naturally, they can have original aspects, which are not the same as in the
figures of this manual, because they depend on the individual features of patient and types of
disease.

It is recommend the following parameters of AcuImage-01 device to realize sedation

and stimulation effects:

Mode: Electrode Modulation Duration

Sedation Positive 40 - 80 (120) Hz 4 5 min.
Harmonization Negative 40 -60 (120) Hz 4 5 min.
Reinforcing Negative 20 (0) Hz 2 3 min.

48
As a rule, the sedation mode is used at work on a front surface of the chest and abdomen in
case of acute disease, but reinforcing mode is used at work on the back surface of the trunk in case
of chronic disease.
It is recommended to carry out circular movement of an electrode above an exposure
skin area though use of a horizontal or longitudinal direction of movement of an electrode is
possible. In all cases it is desirable to be guided by character of sensory reactions of the
patient.

55
CONCLUSION

Thus, device AcuImage-01 combines in itself diagnostic and therapeutic opportunities.

Diagnostic functions of the device are based on the phenomenon of a luminescence
arising on dielectric above points of the low resistance in an electrostatic field of the high-voltage
corona discharge. Then the following diagnostic criteria are used: localization of points, brightness
and duration of a luminescence, and also polarity of the electrode providing the greatest brightness
of a luminescence.
Therapeutic functions of the device are based on the various biological effects arising
in a body of the patient at acting of air-ions and an electro-current of negative and positive polarity.
Feature of therapy with the help of device AcuImage-01 is that during treatment is realized
dosed out air-ion and electro-puncture methods.
