Course Description: Career Connections has been published specifically for pre-apprenticeship

training program to enable students to develop their skills in the craft and trade of Carpentry. The

program presents not only skill-based project books for students in the 9th through 12th grades but

also a book that serves as a framework for deciding on a career.

The Carpenters International Training Fund (CITF), a division of the United Brotherhood of

Carpenters, has developed this program to provide young people with the knowledge and skills

needed to choose wisely and to prepare for advanced training in a registered apprenticeship

program. The subject matter experts who created this program are all practicing carpenters with

extensive field and teaching experience. There are four additional Project Books that give the

students hands-on shop projects.

Course Objectives:

To illustrate how personal beliefs and interests help identify career choices and how

planning for the future makes career choices attainable

To explain the differences in learning preferences, and to describe decision-making styles

and the steps in good decision-making

To explain the motivations for working and the skills and behaviors required to be

successful in the workplace

To explain the basic skills and thinking skills needed for success in the workplace and the

personal qualities that employers require

To evaluate career options and establish career goals

To introduce careers in construction and describe the jobs and skill requirements of

carpenters and mill-cabinetmakers

To identify additional careers in construction, including floor layer, lather, millwright,

pile driver, boilermaker, and sheet metal worker

To describe the workings of a construction site the stages of operation, the functions of

workers, and the rules of safety

To review construction as a career choice and narrow down a career within the industry

Grading Policy:

Classwork 60%

Test/Projects 30%

Homework 10%

Policy for Late or Missing Assignments:

Homework is assigned twice per quarter. The students are allotted seven or more days to

complete the assignment. Homework will NOT be accepted after the deadline, resulting in an

automatic zero.

Classroom Behavior and Participation:

All students are expected to participate and must behave in the way that is outlined in the

Jennings School District Handbook. ABSOLUTELY NO CELL PHONES ALLOWED IN

SHOP AREA. Parents this is for the safety of all participants. Please support this policy.

Absences:

If absent, students are expected to retrieve the missed assignments from the teacher and return

them within a week. Any tests that are missed will be administered following the students return

to school.
