Grip: Flag, Magic Arm, C-stand, Butterfly, Silk, Mountain leg, Reflector

True or false (correct the false) 2 points each for a total of 20 points.

1. Directional light, coming from the side and back of the subject refers to as side light.
True False

This is a kicker light.

2. Adjusting the camera aperture from an f-stop of f./11 to f./8 means that less quantity of light is
passing through the lens into the camera.
True False

When we adjust the camera aperture from f./11 to f./8 we are letting more light through.

3. A 100mm lens is referred to as a wide lens .

True False

A 100mm lens is a telephoto lens.

COA 225 LIGHTING 1 FINAL EXAM Name:

4. The difference between f./56 and f./8 is two f-stops.

True False
It is only one f-stop.

5. One of the most common spotlights, named after the inventor of its lens, is the Fresnel.
True False

6. Fill light is used to increase the contrast and shadows created by the Key light.
True False

It is used to reduce and adjust the contrast created by the key light.

7. Usually in TV shows we use low-key lighting, specially in comedies.

True False
They are usually high-key.

8. Kino Flo is best known for its fluorescent tube-based systems that produce hard light
True False
They produce soft, diffuse light.

9. Specular light is highly unidirectional, scattering the light in many directions

True False

Specular light is highly directional, but the light scatters in mostly one direction.

10. Eyelight is a type of fill light

True False

Fill in the blank. 2 points each for a total of 20 points.

1. The arrangement of projectors in a triangular design is called __3 point lighting_____________

2. Which filter do we use to reduce the intensity of light without diffusing the beams? __ND _____

3. Lighting ratio of _____32:1____________ is a 5-stop difference.

4. How can I change the color temperature from Daylight to Tungsten ? _CTO_____________

COA 225 LIGHTING 1 FINAL EXAM Name:

5. A technical method to adapt digital camera and video equipment to the color temperature of

the dominant light sources in the scene is called ____white balance___________________

6. What is the range of wavelengths that compose the visible spectrum? _400 to 700nm_________

7. A lighting ratio of 8:1 is a __3 __________________________ stop difference.

8. Please write down the standard f-stop scale (at least 8 consecutive f-stops)

1, 14, 2, 28, 4, 56, 8, 11, 16, 22

9. The ratio between the width of an image and its height, referred to as 16:9 or 4:3 is known as

the ___aspect ratio_______________________________________________________

10. A kind of projector that produces daylight is called _____HMI_____________________

Short questions. 5 points each for a total of 15 points.

1. Explain what we mean by head room, nose room and the rule of thirds.

Head room is the space between a subject and the top of the frame. Nose room or look room
refers to the space between the subject and the side of the frame. The rule of thirds divides the
frame in vertical and horizontal thirds as an aid to composition.

2. Explain what are the steps for white balance.

1. Piece of white paper or a neutral grey.

2. Zoom into it until it covers the full frame or at least a minimum of 90%.
3. Press the white balance button on the camera.

3. Explain the differences between high-key lighting and low-key lighting.

In high key lighting we commonly find low contrast, high fill relative to key, backgrounds are usually
well lit, the overall image is bright. Its typical of comedy and TV. Low key commonly exhibits high
contrast ratios, low fill relative to key, dark backgrounds, an overall dark image and is common in
dramas, melodramas and horror.

COA 225 LIGHTING 1 FINAL EXAM Name:

4. Explain the difference between ISO and F-stop.

The ISO refers to how fast film or a sensor can respond to light and create an image. The f-stop
refers to how much light a lens lets through. Both are used to control exposure.

5. Explain the difference between a telephoto and a wide-angle lens.

A telephoto lens has a small angle of view, while a wide angle covers a wide area. Telephoto lenses
compress space and present reduced depth of field, while wide angle lenses exaggerate depth
perception and have wider depth of field.
