1. Introduction
Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is a business approach that contributes to sustainable
development by delivering economic, social and environmental benefits for all stakeholders and
the environment.

CSR strategies encourage the company to make a positive impact on the environment
and stakeholders including consumers, employees, investors, communities, and others.

Business Dictionary defines CSR as "A companys sense of responsibility towards the
community and environment (both ecological and social) in which it operates. Companies
express this citizenship (1) through their waste and pollution reduction processes, (2) by
contributing educational and social programs and (3) by earning adequate returns on the
employed resources

2. BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The first stage of the CSR development happened thousand years BC where authorities
introduced different rules and regulations where the workers were severely punished for being
careless and injured someone during their work.

During the industrial revolution the concept grew to a whole new level and the significance of
business in society started to increase exponentially.

The ideology of corporate social responsibility (CSR) has emerged as a response to pressure
from the business side of growing leftist sentiment and the trade union movement in the last third
of the 19th century.

The effect of globalization cannot be under estimated as it played a significant role in CSR,
which forced companies to look for more creative ways of positioning information in a crowded
world.

7. Literature Review

The idea of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has passed through an evolutionary process.
Back from the start in 1950, Howard Bowen wrote a book in this regard as Social
Responsibility of Businessmen in 1953. In his book he d i s c u s s e d i n d e t a i l a b o u t
responsibilities of businessmen towards the society. For its early and seminal work Bowen is
considered as the Father of CSR and his work from 1950s is represented as the notable work
of its time. This era was characterized by a lot of talk about CSR but when it comes about actions
it was not a time because of people were changing and were learning and getting familiar with
the CSR concept.

The businesses are expected to do perform its role in the uplifting of society, understanding the
human needs because of its three roles as an institution, as an organization or corporation and
lastly as individuals (managers in the corporation). These three roles can also be expressed in
terms of three principles of CSR legitimacy, public responsibility, and managerial discretion. In
short, Basic idea of corporate social responsibility is that business and society are interwoven
rather than distinct entities.

The 20th century researchers and scholars came up with more compelling addition to the CSR
concept like stakeholders and environment. European Commission defined CSR as a concept
where companies integrate social and environmental concerns in their business operations and
also in their interaction with their stakeholders

By time changing 21st century is all about having diversified views and thoughts about CSR, in
order to stick solely with one concept is very tricky and challenging. Even the research is not
stopped yet, CSR is a still a developing and fast growing field of research (Neergaard, et al,
2012).

Branco and Rodrigues (2006) talked about the benefits from CSR activities, internal and external
both. The internal benefits include: improved employee motivation, morale, commitment and
loyalty to the company; reduced turnover, recruitment, and training costs; employees positive
attitudes regarding workplace quality; competitive advantages due to employees positive
attitudes; and improved general management and enhanced operational efficiency through the
CSR environmental component. Some of the external benefits are: good relations with external
factors; a positive image with stakeholders; and improved financial outcomes due to
stakeholders loyalty. (Rungsuk, 2013). For many years now, CSR practices are now been
successfully implemented in many companies and organizations all around the world..

According to the World Business Council for Sustainable Development CSR is the continuing
commitment by business to behave ethically and contribute to economic development while
improving the quality of life of the workforce and their families as well as the local community
and society at large. It is believed that, CSR plays a dominant role in job satisfaction of
employees and it is an emerging and increasingly important driver of employee engagement and
commitment. Employee tend to have more positive attitude towards organization if they see
organization more socially responsible.
At present, for companies it is important to realize the importance and need to take into action
the practices of CSR and sustainability. And that comes through in the kinds of jobs we provide,
the kinds of products we make and the ways in which we use our resources
