Basic Cylinder Configuration

Cylinder Right Click Menu

Once a cylinder has been selected (by double or right clicking on the blank cylinder box), you can then right click on the
cylinder for more options.

Right Click Menu

Configure Cylinder - please see the "Advanced Cylinder Configuration" section for information.

Cylinder Options - please see the "Cylinder Options" section for information.

Select Cylinder - please see the "Cylinder Selection" section for information.

Customize Cylinder - please see the "Customize Cylinder" section for information.

Assign Stage - this menu is used to assign the cylinders on a frame to a specific stage and service of compression. After
right clicking on a cylinder and selecting the assign stage option, you will see a menu with the available stages. Click on
the stage to which you wish to assign this specific cylinder.

Cylinder Manipulation (Copy Throw, Copy All, Exchange Throws, Drag and Drop, etc)

Cylinders that are already assigned to a throw can be moved or copied to other throws by using one of two methods. The
first method is to point the cursor at a cylinder and right click. From the right click menu choose either copy throw or
copy to all throws. If copying to a single throw, you must then point the cursor at the other throw, right click again and
choose paste. If you choose to copy to all throws, you must confirm the action (yes/no box), then the chosen cylinder
will be copied to all of the throws on the compressor.

The other method of cylinder manipulation is "drag and drop". Left click on a cylinder and while holding the left mouse
button down, drag the cylinder outline to the desired throw location, and release the button; a menu will appear that
allows the user to copy the cylinder to the target throw or to exchange the two cylinders.

Compare Throws - Allows comparison between two throws. Particularly useful when looking for changes that occurred
in the Customize Cylinder dialog box.

Blank Throw - select this option to remove the selected cylinder and re-balance the frame. The auto-balance program
will use balancing x-heads and/or balance nuts and stubs (where needed) to balance a blank throw. Note, when working
with tandem cylinders, the blank throw option must be selected if a new group of tandems (HE and CE cylinders) is
desired.

View Data Sheet - select this option to view the cylinder data sheet from the Ariel DataBook. The data sheet contains
technical information on the cylinder such as pressures, clearances, valve data, clearance pocket info, materials of
construction, etc.

Drawings - please see the "Drawing" section for information.

Gas Passage Data - select this option to view the cylinder gas passage data from the Ariel DataBook. This sheet contains
dimensional information for the cylinder's suction and discharge gas passages (nozzle, muff, cage opening, etc.).

Adjacent Restrictions - lists those cylinder that are not allowed next to the cylinder chosen.

Guide Deflection - allows calculation of the guide deflection for shimming the guide foot, includes the cylinder weight,
pocket weight and "other" weight. "Other" weight is used for portions of pulsation vessel weight.

Rod Load Chart - Prints a rod load chart for the cylinder. This is based upon the cylinder RDP and the specific gas mole
weight used in the performance program.

Hydrotest Charts - Provides a link to existing hydrotest charts. The cylinder must have a serial number defined.

Clearance Pockets

To add a clearance pocket to a cylinder, double click on the clearance pocket box located on the end of the cylinder. Note
that clearance pockets are not available on all cylinders. Next, click on the "Type" drop down box and select either
Variable or Fixed. Note that both types of pockets are not available on all cylinders. See below for information on
configuring the chosen pocket. Please see the "Customize Cylinder" section for information on custom volume pockets.

Variable Volume Clearance Pockets

After selecting the "Variable" type of pocket, you should next select which pocket, if more than one is available, you
wish to model. The "Variable" drop down box shows all of the available pockets in the form of 0.40 - 44.59 where the
first number is the fixed clearance and the second number is the amount of variable clearance. After the pocket is chosen,
you can adjust it by entering a number in the "% Open", "Number of Turns", "Stroke, in" (inches of travel), or "Pocket
Position" box. The clearance pocket information can be displayed on the run in % open, Number of Turns, inches of
travel, or Position. You can select how this is displayed by clicking on the appropriate radio button under "Display on
Reports". The "Show Clr in Volume" button allows the above clearances to be listed in volume units rather than percent
units. Please see "Customized Devices" in the Customize Cylinder section for information on customizing the variable
volume pockets.

Note the slider on the VVCP for convenient and quick adjustment without leaving the Frame / Cylinder Data tab.

The Pocket Position reference measurement is noted on this nameplate on the VVCP.

Fixed Volume Clearance Pockets

After selecting the "Fixed" type of pocket, you should next select which pocket, if more than one is available, you wish to
model. The "Select" drop down box shows all of the available pockets in the form of 3.51 - 34.29 where the first number
is the pocket closed added clearance and the second number is the pocket open added clearance. After the pocket is
chosen, you can open, close, or plug it by clicking on the appropriate radio button. Note that some cylinders have

multiple pocket heads, each pocket is controlled individually per the above. The "Show Clr in Volume" button allows the
above clearances to be listed in volume units rather than percent units. Please see "Customized Devices" in the
Customize Cylinder section for information on customizing the fixed volume pockets.

Drawings

This box lists the outline drawing numbers for the cylinder and any necessary special flanges. This information is taken
directly from the Ariel DataBook. Double clicking on the drawing number will open that drawing if a program has been
associated with the drawing file extension (.dwg or .pdf). The default drawing location,
http://12.2.241.6:9980/ariel/ext_data/cad/outline_drawings/, can be changed by using the "Drawing" box in the "File
Location" window. The Download Button allows the drawing file to be downloaded directly from this window. The
most recent version of all of Ariel's outline drawings are available on the web at this default address.

Drawings can be found within the performance software in this manner, or on the Ariel website (www.arielcorp.com)
under Support, then Product Drawings. 3D Outline Drawings are not yet available on the Ariel website.

3D drawings can be downloaded in different formats and have specific instructions to help reassemble the cylinders and
frames. Details on downloading and using 3D drawings can be found in the 3D Outline Drawings topic.

Guide Deflection

Estimated Guide Foot Deflection is used to determine necessary shimming for each guide based upon the overhung
weight of the cylinder, pocket and vessels if applied prior to shimming.
