SERVICE PRECAUTIONS
DISARMING THE SYSTEM
ARMING THE SYSTEM

General Information
General Motors calls their air bag system a Supplemental Inflatable Print
Restraint (SIR). Most other manufacturers refer to it as a Supplemental
Restraint System (SRS). SRS is also widely accepted as the industry
standard nomenclature for the system. This manual may use SIR or SRS when referring
to the air bag system.

SERVICE PRECAUTIONS
The Sensing Diagnostic Module (SDM) maintains a reserve energy supply with sufficient
voltage to cause a deployment for up to ten minutes after the ignition switch is
turned OFF , the battery is disconnected or the fuse powering the SDM is removed.
Many of the service procedures require removal of the inflator module fuse and
disconnection of the deployment loops to avoid an accidental deployment .

CAUTION
Proper operation of the Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) sensing system requires
that any repairs to the vehicle structure return the vehicle structure to the original
production configuration. Not properly repairing the vehicle structure could cause non-
deployment of the air bag in a frontal collision or deployment of the air bag for conditions
less severe than intended.

CAUTION
During service procedures, be very careful when handling a Sensing and Diagnostic
Module (SDM). Never strike or jar the SDM. Never power up the SIR system when the
SDM is not rigidly attached to the vehicle. All SDM and mounting bracket fasteners must
be carefully tightened and the arrow must be pointed toward the front of the vehicle to
ensure proper operation of the SIR system. The SDM could be activated when powered
while not rigidly attached to the vehicle, which could cause deployment and result in
personal injury.

DISARMING THE SYSTEM

1. Turn the steering wheel to the straight ahead position.
2. Turn the ignition to LOCK and remove the key.
3. Remove the SIR fuse from the engine compartment fuse block.
4. Remove the left side I/P sound insulator.
5. Disconnect the connector position assurance (CPA) and the driver yellow 2-way
connector located at the base of the steering column.
6. Disconnect the Connector Position Assurance (CPA) and the passenger yellow 2-
way connector located near the base of the steering column.

NOTE
With the SIR fuse removed and the ignition switch in the RUN position, the AIR BAG
warning lamp illuminates. This is normal operation and does not indicate a SIR system
malfunction.

ARMING THE SYSTEM

1. Turn the ignition to the LOCK and remove the key.

2. Connect the Connector Position Assurance (CPA) and the passenger yellow 2-
way connector pigtail through the trap door in the I/P compartment.
3. Connect the connector position assurance (CPA) and the driver yellow 2-way
connector located at the base of the steering column.
4. Install the left side I/P sound insulator.
5. Install the SIR fuse to the engine compartment fuse block.
6. Staying well away from both air bags, turn the ignition switch to the RUNposition.
Verify that the AIR BAG warning lamp flashes seven times and then stays off. If
the AIR BAG warning lamp does not operate as described, the system will have to
be diagnosed.
